Free school holiday fun at our local libraries

Families are encouraged to take advantage of the free fun-filled activities to entertain children throughout the Easter holidays at Beerwah and Maleny libraries. The activities cater for all ages with a great range of programs. Children can let their creativity go wild by making pixel art characters, superhero characters and master builders in the LEGO challenges. Children can even get techie with Robotic workshops using Ozobots and film making iPads, amazing apps and their Library as a backdrop.

Tuesday, March 29, (Beerwah) Join in for pixel art and crafts inspired by the world of pixelated games! From 10.00am (suitable for ages five+).

Just turn up for this activity, no bookings are required.

Wednesday, March 30 (Maleny) Join the ‘Activate’ team to create your own Heroes vs.

Holiday activities at Mary Cairncross

Bush Detectives with Geckoes Wildlife Tuesday, March 29 from 10.30am - 12.00noon.

Often we find evidence of animals but not the actual ‘live’ animal.

This presentation and activity provides an introduction to children on how to identify animals from tracks, scats, skulls and other animal evidence. You may be surprised at what could be living in your neighbourhood that you haven’t seen yet!

Constructing habitats (i.e. bird nests and possum shelters) made from recycled materials. Take these lovely natural shelters home to install in your own garden to create new habitat.

Children will explore the amazing flying foxes and their habitat with Raeleen. Cheryl will then guide children in drawing the animals using techniques of proportion, and textures to create their own unique composition which tell a story of their animal.

Their masterpiece will be mixed media combo of graphite pencils, watercolour paints and soft pastels.

Holiday fun at Vacation Care If you would like something fun to do over the Easter school holidays then some of our local vacation care programs are worth checking out. Many families are entitled to CCB (child care benefit) and CCR (child care rebate) subsidies which can be applied to your daily fees to reduce your cost of attending.

Mooloolah Outside School Hours and Vacation Care are doing lots of activities around the theme of environment and growing things. They have new gardens with herbs started and during the first week kids will be looking at activities around the theme ‘How does your Garden Grow?’ which includes making a little scarecrow.

Also planned for the week is stained glass leaf craft as well as the opportunity to learn how to sprout seeds. At the end of week one will be an excursion to see ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ at the movies.

In the second week, kids will be making paper plate scarecrows and ‘dirt slice’ to eat. Activities also include going to the local dam for a sausage sizzle, a puppet show ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, and making sock puppets.

The week will finish with making paper flowers and activities for Environment Day. Any school age child in the area can be enrolled and families are entitled to CCB and CCR for the holiday fun.

Glenview School is running their Kidz Bizz vacation care program with each day of the holidays split into a morning and afternoon activity - kids can come for a full day or half day care. Most of the activities planned over the two weeks will incur no additional costs. Some of the activities included during the first week are; birthday party games and a handball competition, creating an ‘inertia’ zoom ball and making ‘grasshead’ activities and paper-mache crafts. On Friday of the first week is ‘Jumping castle day’ (an additional $12.00) for a day filled with bouncy fun.

The second week of the holidays will feature a ‘how to make icecream in a bag’ workshop, Zumba dance off and construction afternoon with ‘Amazing Maize’. There will also be the great scooter and bike games and challenges on wheels, so don’t forget your wheels and helmet. Later in the week there is cupcake decorating and a soccer skills workshop (additional $10.00).

Finally the week’s activities will end with playdough creations and the ever popular ‘stop motion’ movie making workshop using iPads.

Week two will see a BBB day (biscuits, bed and board games) and a ‘painting madness’ day. there will a science adventure day where kids can get innovative with science experiments followed by an AFL excursion day.

The holiday activities will conclude with a no additional cost ‘slip n slide’ day.

Ready, steady, grow!

Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre director, Ange Hardy is excited to announce the opening of four more rooms at the centre.

Receiving all their licensing on March 15 for the new area has meant their capacity has risen from 75 children to 151. This also means more places for before and after school care, as well as expanding their popular vacation care programs.

Ange and the team have worked hard to build a consistently improving standard of quality childcare over the whole centre, which has resulted in the need for more places. Ange builds

on this passion for striving to achieve the best, by using her skills to provide a service that positively supports all aspects of children’s early interactions, learning and lives.

Believing that everyone has the right to good quality affordable childcare, Ange feels that the business is unique in the way it offers a number of additional services and activities at very competitive fees.

Vaccination levels too low

Shadow Health Minister Mark McArdle has expressed his disappointment and dismay that Sunshine Coast immunisation rates reportedly fall behind the national target of 95% by 6.8%.

“According to the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register just 88.2% of Coast children are immunised. This equates to a disturbing 11.8% of Sunshine Coast children under the age of five, and 13% of two-year-olds, at risk of contracting or spreading diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, meningococcal, and chicken pox, among others.

“We have all seen those horrific images on television of children with whooping cough gasping for air.

To know that by vaccinating children under five, to not have to go through the excruciating experience of watching an infant cough so uncontrollably and so violently that they die, is a tremendous relief for any parent.

“So why isn’t the message getting through?

The decision not to vaccinate one child actually threatens the health of an entire community.

“While some diseases are less common than others, they still exist and without immunisation, we will face disease outbreaks, serious illness and worse still, preventable deaths.

“I urge parents to discuss any concerns they may have with their doctor and avoid delaying the decision. It is extremely important immunisation starts as early as possible in a child’s life if we are to prevent the spread of disease,” Mr McArdle said.
