06 The Life of Corpses: Exploring the Ethical Issues of Exhibiting Human Remains A one-day symposium presented in response to the artwork of Mexican artist Teresa Margolles, exploring the ethical issues around the display of human remains. A number of artistic and scientific professionals will discuss the complex interference existing between the artistic possibilities of human remains and the ethical responsibilities. Teresa Margolles currently has work on display at Glasgow Sculpture Studios.

12 The Ben Nevis Observatory and the Wilson Cloud Chamber The meteorological observatory on the summit of Ben Nevis was manned continuously from 1883 to 1904. CTR Wilson's scientific path, culminating in the Nobelwinning invention of the cloud chamber, began there in 1894.

We recall these two linked stories from Scottish scientific history.

13 Lord Kelvin’s Legacy William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) was Professor of Natural Philosophy in Glasgow all through the second half of the 19th century. He was a brilliant mathematical physicist, a pioneer of transatlantic telegraphy, and all in all one of the major scientific figures of his time. During this talk we will look at his life and legacy.

The Alliance Française de Glasgow is hosting a bilingual exhibition focused on energy and sustainable development.

43 Ask an Astronaut: GLOW Meet Making use of live questions and a Live Rover Challenge, the Scottish Space School is going all out to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. 44 The Beavers are Back Scottish Beaver Trail staff present this interactive cross-curricular workshop for P7 pupils learning about biodiversity, beavers and their reintroduction into the wild in Britain.

Pupils get to grips identifying beaver skulls, pelts, feeding signs and tracks. They then test their dam-building abilities against each other by taking part in a dam-building challenge.

45 Using and Losing Bugs There are more types of microorganisms (or bugs) than you can imagine, and they turn up in every place you can think of. In this workshop session we’ll find out how easy it is to use bugs to make something useful for humans by using an extract from their cells to produce fruit juice. We will then see how easy it is to lose them by trying to get rid of a simulated germ from our own skins. How much do we really need to wash to get “clean”?

48 Be a Microbiologist at University of Glasgow A hands-on diagnostics lab looking at infectious diseases caused by bacteria, parasites and viruses.

Pupils will explore several microbial diseases before trying to diagnose a ‘patient’ by analysing their recent medical history and by performing simple microscopic and biochemical tests on blood or stool samples taken from the patient.

University of Glasgow staff in the School of Maths and Stats brings you an afternoon of activities designed to challenge your pupils.

The ‘Funmaths show’ focuses on mathematical enjoyment, with interactive puzzles to help develop pupils’ mathematical skills (logic, numeracy and decision making). In the stats lab ‘Getting into Shape: How to Tell the Boys from the Girls’, size measurement data is used to distinguish the sexes in species that aren’t visually distinct.

Explore what it is that makes human faces different between the sexes.

This event offers teachers and STEM Ambassadors the opportunity to meet informally and discuss how STEM Ambassadors can work effectively within a school, with the aim of inspiring and enthusing pupils in the STEM subjects.
