CINEMA 3 IS COMING SOON...

The building of your new sixty-seat screen is almost complete!

Cinema 3 is currently being built on the former site of Café Cosmo. The stylish sixty-seat screen will offer a comfortable and high-quality viewing experience. The building of a new box office, kiosk, reconfigured toilets by the entrance to Cinema 2 and 3, and a new canopy and entrance area is also underway.

Due to the construction of Cinema 3, our normal access has been affected temporarily resulting in wheelchair user access being possible with staff accompaniment. Our adapted toilet will reopen by the end of September. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this essential improvement to our facilities.

Drinks and light snacks are available to take into the cinema. The Balcony Bar is open before screenings with a selection of beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks. Both of our screens are licensed so you can enjoy a drink while watching a film.

Cate Blanchett stars as Jasmine, a self-medicating socialite on the brink of a breakdown in Woody Allen’s study of class relations in contemporary America. When her morally-bankrupt financier husband swindles away their wealth, Jasmine is forced to stay with her working class sister, Ginger (Sally Hawkins), in San Francisco.

With her nerves in tatters, Jasmine fights to preserve her elegant façade and upper class upbringing, whilst stifling her embarrassment at her fall from grace. Alternating present day scenes with Jasmine’s previous life of luxury, Blue Jasmine is a refreshing, modern take on Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire.

In the award-winning Hannah Arendt, actor Barbara Sukowa reteams with director Margarethe von Trotta (Vision, Rosa Luxemburg) for a brilliant new biopic of the influential German-Jewish philosopher and political theorist. Arendt’s reporting on the 1961 trial of ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann in The New Yorker, controversial both for her portrayal of Eichmann and the Jewish councils, introduced her now-famous concept of the ‘Banality of Evil’. Using footage from the actual Eichmann trial and weaving a narrative that spans three countries, von Trotta beautifully turns the often invisible passion for thought into immersive, dramatic cinema.

Blanchett is beyond brilliant. This is jaw-dropping work, what we go to the movies hoping to see.

Winter of Discontent El sheita elli fat Friday 27 (15.45) & Saturday 28 September (18.10) Set against the momentous backdrop of the whirlwind protests of Cairo’s Tahrir Square that began on 25 January 2011, this film by independent director Ibrahim El-Batout takes us on a compellingly raw, starkly moving journey into the lives of activist Amr (Amr Waked), journalist Farah (Farah Youssef) and state security officer Adel (Salah Hanafy). As the stories of the characters unfold, we are propelled headlong into the heady, often surreal atmosphere of terror and uncertainty that characterized the last days of Mubarak’s rule and changed the face of Egypt.

This vibrant adaptation of the acclaimed stage musical, inspired by The Proclaimers’ chart-topping album, features a fantastic cast and rousing songs.

When best friends Davy (George MacKay) and Ally (Kevin Guthrie) return from military service in Afghanistan, their brush with death intensifies a desire to live life to the fullest: Davy falls in love with Yvonne (Antonia Thomas), while Ally plans to propose to Davy's sister Liz (Freya Mavor).

Meanwhile, Davy's folks, Rab (Peter Mullan) and Jean (Jane Horrocks), are set to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. It should be a happy occasion, if only Rab weren't keeping a troubling secret…

The latest collaboration between director Roger Michell and writer Hanif Kureishi, following The Buddha of Suburbia and The Mother, Le Week-End is a beautifully observed, funny and poignant story about the nature of love and commitment. Lindsay Duncan and Jim Broadbent star as a long-married British couple who return to Paris for the first time since their honeymoon to revitalise their marriage.

While there, they run into an old friend (Jeff Goldblum) who transforms their thoughts on life and their love for one another.

Like Father, Like Son Soshite chichi ni naru Friday 18 – Thursday 24 October From director Hirokazu Koreeda (Still Walking, I Wish), Like Father, Like Son follows workaholic father, Ryota, who enforces a strict regime of order upon his household. However, when Ryota and his wife discover that their six-yearold son was switched at birth due to a clerical error, Ryota’s life is thrown into disarray. With their biological son being raised by a working-class couple, Ryota finds himself torn between raising his biological son or the son he has fathered since birth. A bittersweet drama which examines the nature-versus-nurture debate, as well as the complexity of emotions that comes from being a parent.

A warm and perceptive meditation on friendship, human connection and getting a second chance at life. Fiftysomething Martin Bonner (Paul Eenhoorn) relocates to Reno, where he finds work helping released prisoners transition to life on the outside, while trying his hand at speed dating and passing time as a soccer referee on weekends. Meanwhile, Travis Holloway (Richmond Arquette) has just been released from prison after serving twelve years. Surprising both of them, Travis and Martin form an unlikely friendship that offers them reciprocal support and understanding.

Based on the true story of Alvin Straight’s journey across Iowa and Wisconsin on a lawnmower in 1994, David Lynch’s The Straight Story is an enjoyable meditation upon family, community and growing old.

When elderly Second World War veteran Alvin (Richard Farnsworth) hears that his estranged brother has suffered a stroke, he decides to set off on the 300-mile journey to make amends before he dies. This classic road movie features an extraordinary performance by the then seventy-nine-yearold Richard Farnsworth which earned him an Academy Award nomination as Best Actor.

The Lebanese Rocket Society Friday 18 – Monday 21 October This stranger-than-fiction documentary tells the fascinating story of a Lebanese university professor and his students, who launched a space programme into the skies of Lebanon. The rocket, called Cedar, was developed during the 1960s, until the government-funded programme was scrapped due to Western pressure.

Featuring testimonies from men who worked on the rocket in their youth, alongside amazing archival footage of the rocket’s manufacture, this internationally acclaimed documentary unearths a forgotten moment in history, revisiting the utopian possibilities that ultimately lost out to civil and regional conflict.

The Selfish Giant Preview: Monday 21 October (18.10) From Friday 25 October

Oscar Wilde’s classic fairy tale is relocated to modern day player Bradford in this contemporary fable about growing up and lost childhood. When fourteen-year-old Arbor and his best friend Swifty are excluded from school, they start collecting scrap metal for shady local scrapman Kitten. However, finding themselves embroiled in the world of copper theft, Arbor becomes greedy and the boys’ relationship starts to falter, with tragic consequences. This social-realist drama from director Clio Barnard (The Arbor) is a study of friendship, exploitation and two children who are failed by the society supposed to care for them.

Following the preview on Monday 21 October (18.10) director Clio Barnard will take part in a Q&A live via satellite from the National Media Museum in Bradford.

The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology Monday 28 – Thursday 31 October The makers of The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema return with another quickfire journey along the intersection of cinema and philosophy. Cultural theorist Slavoj Zizek and filmmaker Sophie Fiennes explore how movies not only reflect, but actually shape ideologies. Through dissecting film, they expose how association can be used to permeate our thoughts and ideas, and how art can be misused to further political agenda. With examples drawn from music, art, current events and history, this is a fascinating examination of society and how little we understand it.

In this one-off live broadcast from Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema, the incomparable and irreverent John Cooper Clarke performs poetry, answers questions in interview and presents Evidently… John Cooper Clarke, a film about his life which includes contributions from Bill Bailey, Steve Coogan and the Arctic Monkeys.

Alan Berliner makes a deeply personal statement with his latest documentary First Cousin Once Removed, a portrait of his friend and mentor poet Edwin Honig.

Using archive footage and freshly shot material, Berliner conjures a picture of a magnetic figure who, even in the face of Alzheimer’s, shows intermittent flashes of the great intelligence the filmmaker once knew. Berliner’s own studious probing of Honig’s fading consciousness makes for a fascinating examination of what makes us human, drawing universal conclusions that make this a truly rewarding experience for anyone interested in how the mind works.

At thirty-four, shortly after the birth of his son, Neil Platt found himself with only months to live as a result of debilitating Motor Neurone disease. As he maintains his blog, Neil captures for posterity the intense and sometimes irreverent thoughts that keep him going as his body fails. His loving wife Louise provides him with invaluable support, and the film derives considerable power from their desire to record a loving family relationship onscreen.

Running from Crazy details how Mariel has struggled with the mental health issues in her family and come to an understanding about their well-known history of suicide and mental illness. The expedition, the third attempt to climb Everest, culminated in the deaths of respected climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, and sparked an ongoing debate over whether or not they reached the summit. Filming in brutal conditions with a specially adapted camera, Noel captured images of breathtaking beauty and considerable historic significance. Don’t miss this epic and moving portrait of people persevering in one of the world’s harshest landscapes.

When railroad labourer Duff (Ivan Dixon) meets teacher Josie (Abbey Lincoln), he decides it’s time to settle down to marriage and a factory job. Trouble is, he’s expected to tolerate white bosses who, wittingly or not, are unfailingly racist, and Duff has his pride. Moreover, the couple have to deal not only with the disapproval of Josie’s preacher father, but with Duff’s son by a previous relationship and his own alcoholic father.

Small wonder this was reputedly Malcolm X’s favourite film; terrific performances by the mostly African American cast, eloquent camerawork, and a matchless soundtrack of Motown tunes make for understated but powerful drama. BFI

Based on Sakuraba Kazuki’s award-winning novel The Fake ‘Fuse’: Satomi Hakkenden, Fuse – Memoirs of the Hunter Girl follows the story of Hamaji, a young huntress who lives alone on a mountainside. Following the death of her grandfather, she receives a letter summoning her to the city of Edo, where her brother lives. Upon arriving, she becomes involved in hunting deadly creatures terrorising the city – half-human, half-dogs called Fuse, who consume human souls. However, crossing paths with Shino, a mysterious member of a travelling performing troupe, Hamaji finds herself embroiled in something much more serious, and realises she must decide where her loyalties lie.

After engaging in an illicit affair with one of his pupils, English teacher Parker Sithole spirals into an abyss of obsession that eventually leads to murder. The result is a hypnotically engaging journey into the soul of a mentally troubled man. Jahmil Qubeka's second feature is a consummate tribute to classic film noir, albeit an irreverent and thoroughly South African rendition of the genre.

Atang Mokoenya reluctantly leaves Johannesburg to travel to his remote ancestral land, the Kingdom of Lesotho, to bury his estranged father. Stirred by memories of his youth, he falls in love with his childhood friend Dineo, now a radiant young school teacher.

Through her, Atang is drawn to the mystical beauty and hardships of the people and land he had forgotten. The Forgotten Kingdom takes us on a mesmerising road trip through the stunning rural hills of Lesotho and depicts a story of romance and passion both for a country and a woman.

Told across the course of a decade, Nabil Ayouch’s feature is adapted from Mahi Binebine’s novel about the 2003 Casablanca suicide bombings. This visually sumptuous and often breathless coming-of-age story is reminiscent of Fernando Meirelles’ City of God. A major achievement by one of North Africa’s most important filmmakers.

Hidden Beauties is the poignant tale of two young Tunisian women striving to achieve the same level of emancipation enjoyed by the male population of their country – even as their fellow citizens fight for freedom.

Surrounded by the turmoil of revolution, Zaineb and Aisha are inspired to change the course of their own lives. As one woman resists putting on the veil and the other resists taking it off, the two friends stand together unrelenting in their fight. A unique documentary about how Divine, aka Harris Glenn Milstead, became John Waters’ cinematic muse and an international drag icon.

Featuring home movie footage and television appearances, alongside interviews with many of Divine's family and friends, such as John Waters, Ricki Lake and his mother, I Am Divine charts Divine’s career from his childhood as a bullied schoolboy in Baltimore through to his rise and infamy as a cult superstar. Blurring the line between performer and personality, Divine revolutionized pop culture and this documentary seeks to celebrate the larger-than-life performer.

Directors James Franco and Travis Mathews' attempt to recreate forty minutes of missing footage from William Friedkin’s controversial 1980 thriller Cruising.

Initially cut in order to secure an R rating, Friedkin later sought to restore the footage (largely set in a gay leather bar), only to discover that United Artists no longer had it. Interior. Leather Bar. uses a docufiction format to explore the creative and ethical issues arising from the process of trying to film such a project, interspersing sex scenes with cast interviews and private conversations between Franco and Mathews.

Lipstikka is a psychological drama which depicts the emotional and sexual bond between Lara and Inam, two Palestinian teenage girls from the West Bank. In the midst of the political turmoil of the 1st Intifada, they decide to break the curfew imposed by the Israel military, and sneak into the Jewish part of Jerusalem to see a movie. What begins as a youthful prank, soon evolves into a twisted set of events. Fifteen years later, they meet in London as adult women, and realise that what they remember from their past may not necessarily reflect what indeed happened.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Blue is the Warmest Colour follows the story of seventeen-year-old Adèle, who dreams of falling in love. However, love takes a surprising turn in the form of blue-haired older art student, Emma. Adèle’s life is turned upside down as the two fall head over heels, conducting a passionate and intense relationship.

Spanning a decade, we see the highs and lows of first love and the implications of growing up and growing apart. Devastating and tender, this coming-of-age tale explores themes of love and loss familiar to us all.

When Rosie gets lost in the desert, she is rescued from a gang of desperados by Abel (Tab Hunter), a silent cowboy with no name. Reaching the miserable little town of Chili Verde, the two encounter saloon owner Marguerita (Lainie Kazan) and learn of the town’s hidden stash of buried treasure. With an absurd bedroom farce and treasure maps tattooed on backsides, this is a hilarious, surreal take on the Western genre.

Exploited by a dishonest record company, Ivan finds himself descending further into the seamier side of life. After killing several police officers in a bloody raid, his record company release his single ‘The Harder They Come’, elevating the fugitive to the status of folk hero. The Harder They Come resulted in an incredible upsurge in the popularity of reggae in America, including hits such as ‘You Can Get it if You Really Want’, ‘Sitting in Limbo’ and ‘Johnny Too Bad’.

Crossing the Line

Piercing Brightness Sunday 6 October (20.00) Two youths land in a spaceship outside Preston. Their mission: to re-establish contact and affect the retrieval of the 'Glorious 100' sent to earth millennia ago in human form to observe the development of another race. Inspired by Lancashire having the highest rate of UFO sightings in the UK, Piercing Brightness uses Preston and its inhabitants as a springboard to investigate religious, racial and classbased social hierarchies. This eerily beautiful debut feature by acclaimed visual artist Shezad Dawood, with a script by cult novelist Kirk Lake and original score by Makoto Kawabata of Acid Mothers Temple, is as experimental as it is entertaining.
