Monday 16 October – Monday 11 December An ideal beginner’s course for those wishing to broaden their critical understanding of contemporary cinema. Current releases are complemented by engaging discussion around a range of topics.

The course takes place over eight consecutive Monday evenings, and is comprised of four film screenings and four seminars. Films will be in early evenings but exact times may vary, seminars will take place at 18.30 in GFT project room.

This course is led by Alistair Harkness, Chief Film Critic and Feature Writer with The Scotsman, and regular contributor to BBC Radio Scotland’s The Culture Studio with Janice Forsyth. £65/£55 conc Films likely to be studied include The Party, Call Me By Your Name and Loveless.* *all titles subject to release changes.

Kedi U - infrequent very mild bad language | Turkish with English subtitles Saturday 16 September 11.30 (1h19m) Charming cat documentary Kedi is a truly original and charming documentary, profiling the city as seen through the eyes of seven of the loveable cats that live and thrive in Instanbul, Turkey.

Birds of Passage N/C 8+ | French with English subtitles Saturday 23 September 11.30 (1h24m) When Chloe received an unhatched egg from her father, it was not the birthday present she had hoped for. It gets more complicated when the egg hatches into a duckling and forms an attachment to Chloe’s friend Margaux instead of Chloe. The two girls must work together and attempt to raise the young bird despite the hurdles along the way. A heart-warming tale of friendship and adventure.

Sun 27 (16.00) & Wed 30 Aug (18.10) Charting the Evacuation of Dunkirk from three points of view - land, air and sea - director Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight) has created a tense and emotional account of one of the Second World War’s most remarkable battles. Over 300,000 soldiers find themselves trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk with little hope of survival.

Time is running out for the Allied forces trying to survive the incoming German advance and make it home.

Rachel Getting Married

Sun 27 (16.30) & Tue 29 Aug (18.00) Kym Buchman has been in and out of rehab clinics for the better part of ten years, and is given special leave from her most recent stint in order to attend her sister’s wedding. Staying at the family home, Kym is surrounded by her entire extended family, all of whom have their own thoughts on her situation. Jonathan Demme’s gift for representing character and community shines through in this moving film, which is also notable for its breakthrough Oscar-nominated performance by Anne Hathaway.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (3D)

Friday 25 – Thursday 31 August An ominous dream convinces 77-year-old Daya Kumar that his end could be near. He tells his son Rajiv, who feels compelled to take leave from his demanding job, drop everything and make the journey with his stubborn father to Mukti Bhawan, a guesthouse devoted to people about to die, in the holy city of Varanasi. As the days go by, Rajiv finds himself caught between his responsibilities to his father and to his boss, while Dayan starts to bloom in the hotel. Preceded by Panorama of Calcutta from the River Ganges (1899, 1m30s), the earliest surviving film of India from the BFI National Archive.

Tuesday 29 August (19.15) 10 years after the events of Terminator and Sarah Connor’s ordeal is only just beginning.

Sarah must protect her son John, the future leader of the human resistance, from a new Terminator, sent back in time to eliminate John while he’s still a child. The duo don’t have to face this terrifying threat alone - the human resistance have managed to send them an ally… a warrior from the future ordered to protect the Connors at any cost. David Gilmour Live at Pompeii

Wednesday 13 September (20.15) 45 years after Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour filmed ‘Live At Pompeii’ in the legendary Roman Amphitheatre there, he returned for two spectacular shows. The performances were the first-ever rock concerts for an audience in the stone Roman amphitheatre, and, for two nights only, the 2,600 strong crowd stood exactly where gladiators would have fought in the first century AD. An audio-visual spectacle featuring lasers, pyrotechnics and a huge circular screen on which specially-created films screened, the show features stellar performances from an all-star band performing Pink Floyd classics as well as songs from David Gilmour’s solo career.

Sunday 10 September (20.00) Luke Fowler’s latest film is an intimate portrait of Martin Bartlett, a Canadian experimental musician who pioneered the use of the ‘microcomputer’ during the 1970s and 80s. His contribution as a composer, educator and founding member of the artist-run centre Western Front is undoubtedly extensive, but his legacy risks fading from cultural memory since his death from AIDS in 1993. Created largely from archival material as well as new 16mm film footage, this film is a journey through Bartlett’s musical time and space, creating an experimental portrait that defies one dimensionality.

Les Enfants Terribles

Sunday 10 September (14.50) After seeing Melville’s debut feature, Jean Cocteau enlisted the young visionary to create a film adaptation of his popular novel of the same name. The twisted relationship of siblings Elisabeth and Paul stems from their close childhood, when Elisabeth cared for an injured Paul. As the pair grow older, romance and jealousy enter their lives with wicked and surprising consequences.

Sunday 17 September (14.15) Towards the end of his career, Melville worked with leading man Alain Delon multiple times, but the two were arguably never better than in Le Samouraï. Adding Japanese lone-warrior mythology to Melville’s unique blend of American and French gangster drama, this film follows a meticulous hit man who finds himself backed into a corner after he is witnessed carrying out a job one night. Many see Le Samouraï as Melville’s crime masterpiece, and the director mixes noir tropes (the killer, the cops, the underworld) with new wave flairs to blend a heady cocktail of cool. Everything is planned out meticulously, and Bob assembles a crack team for his perfectly envisioned crime, but fortune has different plans in this underworld comedy of manners. Monday 28 August (18.15) For some people, a housing crisis means not getting planning permission for a loft conversion. For others it means, quite simply, losing their home. In this new documentary, narrated by Maxine Peake, we see the catastrophic failures that have led to a chronic shortage of social housing in Britain. Focusing on the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in Glasgow, London and across the UK, the film investigates how the state works with the private sector to demolish council estates to build unaffordable properties on the land.

Friday 15 – Sunday 17 September In 1977, fresh from the success of Jaws, Steven Spielberg could do no wrong. This follow-up cemented his reputation as a master entertainer. When Roy Neary (Dreyfuss) encounters a UFO on a dark country road, he becomes fascinated with all things paranormal, much to the dismay of his wife and children. Roy’s obsession eventually leads him across the USA to witness the first arrival of extraterrestrials on Earth. As well as being one of the great spectacular cinema experiences, this film offered the relatively groundbreaking perspective that aliens could be peaceful beings rather than war-mongering monsters.

Neurosurgeon Frederick (Wilder) inherits the castle of his grandfather, the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. Aided by lab assistant Inga, hunchback Igor (Feldman) and housekeeper Frau Blucher, Frederick embarks upon a reanimation experiment in the castle lab. A key film in Wilder’s cinematic legacy, Brooks and Wilder are at their comedy best on this collaboration.

Sunday 1 October (17.00) Bruce LaBruce’s Hustler White stars the legendary Canadian filmmaker himself as lovelorn academic Jürgen Anger, whose quest to document the LA hustling scene leads him into an increasingly tangled relationship with the reckless Monti Ward. A satirical black comedy riffing on Sunset Boulevard amongst other Hollywood classics, this early work from LaBruce also stars queer canonical figures such as Vaginal Davis and Ron Athey.
