This year we’re part of the national Festival of Architecture for the Year of Innovation, Architecture & Design 2016 and our programme offers countless opportunities to explore Glasgow’s architecture and learn about the city’s innovations.

Garnethill Synagogue 129 Hill Street, G3 6UB 1879, John McLeod & NS Joseph Building Category A Scotland’s first, purpose-built synagogue is also the home of the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre, which contains displays on the history of Jews in Scotland. This beautiful building features extensive high quality stained glass windows. Photography inside the building is permitted under supervision.

Mitchell Library 201 North Street , G3 7DN 1911, 1939 , 1963, William B Whitie Building Category A The iconic Mitchell Library is one of Europe’s largest public libraries with more than a million items in stock. Visit the Jeffrey and Burns Rooms for a unique display of some collection highlights and maybe a peek behind the scenes.

20. Provand’s Lordship 3 Castle Street, G4 0RH 1471, Bishop Muirhead Building Category A Step back in time and discover Glasgow’s unique history with a visit to the oldest house, built in 1471.

Originally part of a hospital, it is one of only four medieval buildings to survive in Glasgow.

Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow 12 Nelson Mandela Place, G2 1BT 1857, Charles Wilson Building Category A Italianate, ‘palazzo’ style building; interior and exterior designed by Charles Wilson. Finely sculpted masks of historical legal figures forming keystones to the window arches outside and richly decorated interior.

Saint Andrew’s Cathedral Clyde Street, G1 4JY 1816, 2011 James Gillespie Graham (1816), Page\ Park (renovated in 2011) Building Category A Early example of Gothic revivalism, Glasgow’s first post-Reformation Catholic church has stunning decor, contemporary artwork including Peter Howson’s St John Ogilvie, and the Cloister Garden with memorial to the Arandora Star tragedy.

Wilma Mackenzie: Glass Engraver NEW The Glasgow Guild Workshop 265 Renfrew Street, G3 6TT The process of engraving involves using copper wheels with a mix of carborundum and oil to grind into the glass. Every stage of the process is done by hand and is very labour intensive. Wilma MacKenzie is one of the few remaining qualified practitioners of copper wheel engraving, mainly working on commissions, (clients include Museums of Scotland, National Library of Scotland, Outlander TV series).
