Fencing Waterways

It is a requirement to fence watercourses on farms that are identified by a continuous blue line on the OSI map scale 1:5000 on www.osi.ie. Any farmer that has a stocking rate that exceeds 170kg organic nitrogen per hectare and/ or is exporting slurry to lower stocking rate farms is now required to erect a fence at least 1.5m from the top of the watercourse or water’s edge. Also, all farms which have roadways that run alongside a watercourse will have to fence the roadway unless there is a stock proof barrier between the watercourse and roadway, such as a hedgerow. Water troughs must also be a minimum of 20m from the watercourse and crossing is now permissible in necessary circumstances only - such as reaching an isolated parcel of land. These new requirements are part of the revised nitrates regulations aimed at improving the water quality.
