NOUREDDINE MELIKECHI Optical spectroscopy and imaging for cancer diagnostics Professor Noureddine MELIKECHI Noureddine Melikechi is professor of physics and dean of the Kennedy College of Science at the University of Massachusetts in the United States. Professor Melikechi has developed a new laser analysis technique called Atomic Emission Spectrometry which can detect cancer antigen 125 (CA 125), one of the biomarkers of ovarian cancer. This spectroscopic technique is also used to study the composition of the planet’s surface. Professor Melikechi was also a member of the NASA scientific team which analyzes data sent by the “ChemCam” instrument on board of the Curiosity rover. It is in recognition of his scientific contribution that in 2011, the governor of Delaware named Professor Melikechi “Mars Ambassador.”

This is an interdisciplinary book that presents the applications of novel laser spectroscopy and imaging techniques for the detection of cancers recently developed by some of the world’s most renown researchers. The book consists of three parts and a total of 16 chapters. Each chapter is written by leading experts who are actively seeking to develop novel spectroscopic and analytical methods for cancer detection and diagnosis.

In Part I, the authors present 8

fundamentals on optics, atoms and molecules, biophysics, cancer and machine learning. These chapters are intended for those who are not experts in the field but wish to learn about fundamentals’ aspects of some of the key topics that are addressed in this book. Particular attention has been given to providing key references for those who

wish to go further into the fundamental aspects of atoms and molecules, light-matter interaction, optical instrumentation, machine learning and cancer.

In Part II, the authors present key applications of various laser spectroscopic methods in cancer diagnosis. They have provided

recent progress in cancer diagnostics obtained by combining laser spectroscopy and machine learning for the analysis of the spectra acquired from biomedical tissues and biofluids.

In Part III, the authors present chapters that discuss key developments in the applications of various laser imaging techniques for cancer detection.

This is one of the few books that addresses cancer detection and diagnosis using laser spectroscopic and imaging tools with an eye on providing the reader the scientific tools, including machine learning ones.

he (CES) Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is the world’s largest technology trade show. This year it saw significant participation with more than 4,300 exhibitors, and a record number of more than 1,400 startups in Eureka Park, and international participation from 150 foreign countries which represented more than 40%. This year the show welcomed more than 135,000 visitors from January 9 to 12. Companies like Panasonic, Google, Samsung and LG presented their latest products.

Tech Global presented a Keynote at the opening of the show, which showed a future vision of the integration of artificial intelligence into daily life.

n January 7, 2024, the Golden Globe ceremony took place at “The Beverly Hilton” in Beverly Hills where the best cinematographic films of the year 2023 were crowned. The most nominated films are: Succession and Barbie.

The most awarded film was Oppenheimer.

Regarding the film Anatomy of a Fall,

by French director Justine Triet, it was selected for best foreign film and best screenplay.

Cillian Murphy was recognized as Best Actor for playing scientist Robert Oppenheimer in director Christopher Nolan who received eight nominations.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was nominated ten times, including three for Best Original Song by Billie Eilish, «What Was I Made For,» and received the award for Best Box Office Hit. Taylor Swift was nominated with her film The Eras Tour in the “best box office hit” category, however she did not win an award.

International Women’s Day

nternational Women’s Day, celebrated every March 8, reminds us that inequalities between men and women remain relevant and that the gap is still deep despite progress. For many years, women have campaigned for others to have rights.

Some heroines are still fighting for their belief in living more effectively as a woman. We must respect the achievements of our ancestors even if many things still need to be improved.

Each year, Glamour Fashion & Beauty honors women from different countries and in different fields.

From Billie Jean King, a renowned player who made tennis history, to Camille Claudel, a talented painter who used curves and meanders to create realistic and expressionist paintings, including the fourth woman to win a Nobel Prize in physics for her work studying the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy Andrea Ghezdirige, who leads the Galactic Center Group at UCLA and studies how gravity is used in black holes.

All these women have at least one thing in common: making their messages heard, and asserting themselves through different activities they carry out. The journey of these women is astonishing and full of surprises.

Despite the evolution of mentalities in certain countries, the international community agrees that the situation of most women in the world is changing very slowly. imgad, located north of the Aurès massif, 418 km from Algiers and 36 km from the town of Batna, was, in Roman times, a military colony. In the year 100 AD, it was created by the last Roman emperor Trajan, who named it after his sister «Marciana Traiana Thamugadi».

The Berbers gave it the name “Thamugadi” which means “source of prosperity and happiness”.

Extending over 90 hectares instead of the 12 hectares initially planned, Timgad has resisted the marks of time and was able to be classified as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982, thanks to its Hippodamian architectural style (the streets are rectilinear and intersect at a right angle) which reflects the constructive genius of the military engineers of Roman civilization.
