E

verything suggests that the global climate will continue to change throughout the 21st century.

The extent of this change, particularly over the next few decades, would, however, depend mainly on the quantities of greenhouse gases emitted in the world, but also on the capacity of our planet Earth to resist and cope with this phenomenon which constitutes today the greatest threat to the ecosystem and global health.

This change will undoubtedly lead to an increase in temperatures since human-caused global warming is now imposing itself on the natural and varied climate that characterizes the blue planet. This is not without causing an uneven increase in temperatures across all countries. Frost-free seasons will be extended as well as germination seasons. As we will experience a shrinking of the great glaciers

Global warming will have an impact on the whole environment. The evolution of flora and fauna will also experience a change, we will not fail to see trees blooming quickly and prematurely.

Glamour Fashion and Beauty faithful to its editorial line, advocates the preservation of the environment, wishes all the population of the earth more stability and more peace of mind in a most favorable climatic atmosphere. The magazine, through the publication of this issue, hopes to all a peaceful life free from harmful effects of this global warming.

All these effects on nature, which scientists predicted a few years ago, are occurring today through the melting of large glaciers causing sea levels to rise at a frantic pace. These same effects are also reflected in all these prolonged periods of heat waves hitting large areas of our planet Earth.

Nevertheless, it challenges all consciences on the dangers of a disproportionate use of a technology inducing all these greenhouse gas emissions which today lead to rising temperatures threaten life on earth in the near future. All to preserve our blue planet!

T

he Pantheon was built by order of King Louis XV between 1758 and 1790 to be the church of «Sainte Geneviève». It was designed by Jacques Germain as a church that combines classical and Gothic cathedral.

Some of the originally existing windows were blocked with masonry to give the interior a darker, more funereal color, which somewhat limited Soufflot’s initial attempt to combine the lighting and brightness of a Gothic cathedral with classical principles. In 1851 the physicist Léon Foucault presented an exhibition of the movement at the Panthéon by hanging a clock from the ceiling, a copy of which is still visible today.

In 2018, the Panthéon housed the remains of 78 great French personalities, including those of 73 men and five women. Among these personalities: Marie Curie, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Jean Moulin, Émile Zola, Victor Hugo and recently Joséphine Baker.

A rich history The Pantheon site has had great importance in the history of Paris, which makes it one of the most visited monuments by foreign tourists and even by the French, hence the beautiful view of Mount Lucotitius and its imposing height on the left bank where the forum of the Roman city of Lutèce is located. The original burial place of Saint Genevieve, who led the resistance against the Huns when they threatened Paris in 451.

Magnificent architecture The building is 110 meters long, 84 meters wide and 83 meters high, with a crypt of the same size.

The dome actually consists of three domes, proportional to each other, the first lower dome, has a roof covered with roses, it is open in the middle.

Looking through this dome, one sees the second dome decorated with frescoes of the Apotheosis of Saint Genevieve by Antoine Gros. The third dome, visible from the outside, is constructed of stone and iron, covered with a layer of lead to provide additional supports hidden within the walls.

J

osephine Baker became an international celebrity in the 1930s after moving to France to pursue a career in show business, she is a black American dancer, singer and actress, born June 3, 1906 in St. Louis, a city in Missouri in the United States, she settled in France, to escape the policy of racial discrimination against blacks in the United States, in addition to her fame as a dancer and singer, she participated in the French resistance against the occupation Nazi and played and important role in the civil rights movement in the United States during World War II, In addition to her artistic and heroic career, she had other humanitarian tournaments, where she adopted 12 children of different races, describing them as the «Rainbow Tribe».

The right decision of the French government The French government has decided to honor the American-born French dancer and actress, Joséphine Backer, by including her in the Grands Cemetery (Pantheon) in Paris, where French dignitaries are buried, becoming the first black woman to receive this honor. The Pantheon is the burial place of famous French icons, such as the «scientist» Marie Curie and the writer Victor Hugo».

Baker will be the sixth woman to join nearly 80 important personalities. Her admission to the Pantheon is a recognition of her contribution to the perfor

ming arts, her bravery in resisting Nazi Germany during the war, while her body will be buried in Monaco, to be commemorated on November 30, with a plaque in the Pantheon. French Emmanuel Macron pays tribute to Baker after a campaign led by her family who submitted a petition with nearly 38,000 signatures, claiming her inscription in the Panthéon since 2013, the inscription of a personality in the Panthéon requires the exclusive approval of the President of the Republic. Baker was hugely successful on stage in the 1920s and 1930s, astonishing audiences with her erotic dancing in Paris, but her work in the resistance during World War II was more prominent in France, where she became a French citizen. after marrying industrialist Jean Léon in 1937.

Baker used her

celebrity connections to gather information about German troop movements, which she passed on secretly. In addition, she was an anti-racist and very open activist.

In 1963, she participated in the March on Washington alongside civil rights leader Martin Luther King, when he delivered his historic «I Have a Dream» speech. Baker died in 1975 and was honored with a military funeral.

Climate change is now the most intractable problem facing humanity. The situation of our planet caused by this phenomenon is all more serious as there is today danger on the life of humanity for the future generations in particular. We are therefore all challenged since today we are at a decisive moment in our history, even in our existence, especially since the consequences of this climate change will be according to researchers’ forecasts, disastrous for life on earth.

In fact, in recent years, the acceleration of this phenomenon has been on an unprecedented scale, ranging from the evolution of weather conditions which threaten food production to the rise in sea level which increases the risk of floods. Adapting to this adverse situation is likely to be a daunting task and will result in costly expenses in the future, if urgent and drastic measures are not taken now.

The situation is therefore serious, especially since climatological studies indicate that the world will probably reach the global temperature limit set by climatologists during the next five years.

The researchers also predicted that by 2025, the annual global temperature will be 1.5°C warmer than the pre-industrial revolution global temperature. An increase that exceeds the set by Paris 20

Agreement on climate change (2015) scientists recommend at all costs not to exceed in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change. It should be noted that this conclusion is drawn from the report recently published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It is based on a study carried out by the meteorological office in Great Britain with the collaboration of a panel of

climatologists from ten countries, including the United States and China.

Another report published, this time by United Nations scientists, confirmed that the negative impact of man on climate change is an «undeniable fact». This report with unprecedented results indicates that persistent greenhouse gas emissions could also lead to

a change in temperatures in less than a decade. It also mentions the rise in sea level which would be nearly two meters by the end of our century.

But contrary to all these alarming forecasts, other researchers are still cultivating the hope of seeing a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, which will make it possible to stabilize the rise in tem-

peratures. This was mentioned in a 42-page report on climate change recently written by an intergovernmental body and sent to various governments under the title «A summary for policymakers».

It should be noted, however, that the various reports and other research done on the subject consider that «Climate change is a scientific reality and is hardly an occasional

event in human life, because no continent is today sheltered from disasters induced by global warming».

Indeed, violent heat waves, devastating fires and repeated hurricanes are now hitting all over the world, causing thousands of victims in many countries.This means that global warming has now crossed the Rubicon.

It is therefore necessary to combine efforts and undertake concerted international action to mitigate its harmful and dangerous effects on our environment.

To do so , it is important to endorse the objectives of the Paris Agreement which consists, it should be emphasized, in keeping global warming for this century below 2°C. Our responsibility is therefore as committed as it is collective since, according to many researchers, «the challenge of climate change knows no national borders, it threatens life throughout the planet.

Achieving sustainable development requires a global approach; countries must urgently step up with their actions to adapt to the new climate reality and work for a real global alliance for zero gas emission project. Ahead of the climate meeting to be held in Glasgow, next November, it is also recommended to expand the use of environmentally friendly renewable energies, such as solar energy, wind energy and the production of green hydrogen…etc”

Finally, it should be noted that the United Nations report has been since 2015, the first major document on global warming to have aroused so much concern and fear in the world. António Guterres, the secretary general of the UN, called it «a red alert on humanity».

This is why he has repeatedly called on rich countries and development banks to contribute financially to adapt to climate change in poor regions of the world. «Neither procrastination nor excuses, he recalls, are allowed today, leaders of the planet are required, more than ever, to provide clear answers to this phenomenon on the occasion of the next world summit on climate change to be held in Scotland».

n an atmosphere of artistic creativity and material extravagance, the opening of Expo 2020 Dubai kicked off with awe-inspiring celebrations featuring fireworks, music and messages on the power of international cooperation and its importance on the future of economy.

The opening ceremony featured huge light effects in a large dome covering a platform surrounded by guests and the Emirati royal family. The opening ceremony stage was marked by a 360-degree dome called Al-Wasl, which carried various light effects over a large area with a height of 67.5 meters Constructed from 13.6 kilometers of ‘steel.

The opening was kicked off with poems, followed by a young girl holding a depiction of a 3,000-year-old gold necklace discovered at Saruq Al Hadid, whose logo was used by Expo, and flags from different countries were transported to the stage with a map projected onto the ground on the roof of the dome, where

The doors of Expo Dubai have been fully opened to attendees and exhibitors from around 200 countries, after being postponed for an entire year following the outbreak of the Corona virus COVID-19 pandemic. The government of Dubai said the total cost of the 2020 Expo budget was estimated at $6.8 billion, as it wanted «Expo» to be an exhibition of cultures, technology, architecture , because it carries the slogan «creating the future by connecting minds», so it included an innovation presentation, a

place to discuss and tackle global challenges, such as climate change, conflict and economic growth .

Officially, the international expo expects to attract more visitors than Milan has expected, with approximately 25 million business and tourist visits to an area that has Been built of 4.3 square kilometers in the desert. . Many countries and companies are also looking forward to the expo, to promote trade and invest, Dubai hopes the expo will give a big boost to its economy, especially after the UAE eased the most restrictions to fight Covid-19, but entry to «Expo», and Dubai is looking forward to billions of dollars in an economic stimulus where its management forecasts growth of 3.1% in 2021 and 3.4% in 2022.

It is reported that Dubai government has required participants and visitors to use a mask. Visitors over 18 must have received the vaccine or tested negative.

SANA ABDEL-QADER AL-SUKHUN Cancer and the coronavirus are two monsters with many tentacles The world has been living, for some years with a deadly monster. Faced with this filthy beast, man has become a vulnerable and powerless being. He is unable to fight against which easily infiltrates the body by spreading quickly to destroy cells, tissues and organs. This cruel monster called «cancer» will not stop until death ensues.

This is why this disease is considered today the most dangerous and feared pathology that man has ever known as it wreaks havoc every day in the four corners of the planet.

With the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic these days, which has caused a real damage in the world, it was necessary to look into the impact of this devastating virus on patients already suffering from cancer. on those who work in the field of treatment and monitoring this disease.

This interest is all more important since cancer patients are the most vulnerable patients, they undergo all kinds of treatments: chemotherapy, immunotherapy and the consumption of quite powerful drugs. Some even go so far as to submit to unbearable sessions of radiotherapy or bone marrow transplants. All these treatments mean that the cancer patient at risk of contracting this infectious virus. This is mainly due to the weakness of the immune system.

But does this mean that cancer patients with this virus are all irreversibly doomed?

What would be the condition of patients who underwent chemotherapy or radiotherapy and who ended up catching the nasty virus? Will they suffer serious health consequences? Are patients recovering from cancer more likely to have health complications if infected with the coronavirus?

These are all questions we are asking ourselves today and which require urgent answers from doctors, specialists and other health practitioners around the world.

To find out more about the subject, we contacted Pr. Sana Abdel-Qader AlSukhun, chair of the global affairs committee at the American Association of Oncology. This great specialist in this pathology who agreed to respond to our requests is also a consultant on issues related to hematological and cancerous tumours.

G.F.B : Given that you are a doctor who has treated different cases of people with leukemia and cancer during this unprecedented Covid-19 crisis, how do you assess the immune system of your patients in the context of this global pandemic?

Pr. S. A : It must be said that the state of a patient’s immune system varies from one person to another, regardless of the disease from which he/ she is suffering. For cancer, it must first be specified that this serious pathology attacks the most vulnerable point of the human immune system.

It is obvious that the global Covid-19 pandemic will have complications on the state of health of cancer patients, It should also be remembered that this type of patient has an organic failure through which this malignant disease infiltrates to attack the human body by forming cancerous cells which spread or stabilize in a very specific organ, this leads to a worsening of the failure of the immune system especially in patients with blood cancer known as (leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma).

One would then ask the nagging question: «Why do we continue, in this pandemic context, to prescribe this kind of treatment when it is harmful to the immune system? «. It must be said that chemotherapy is a treatment that has proven effective in many cases. It can even cure many people or if necessary, reduce the spread of cancer, its effects on the immune system for a limited period.

Additionally, we have the ability to protect these patients by urging them to wear a mask and observe social distancing. We have reached a scientific conviction: these two simple procedures have shown their effectiveness in preventing infection with this virus.

However, I would like to emphasize that, contrary to popular belief, the biological or immunological treatments followed by cancer patients are not without consequences for the immune system. The exception is hormone therapy, a treatment given to patients with prostate and breast cancer which does not weaken the immune system.

Therefore, the complications of infection with the virus will be more accentuated on people with cancer. This is why the medical care of this type of patient, in the context of this viral pandemic, is a challenge, especially since the figures show the death of around four million people with cancer worldwide during the year 2020, according to the WHO report published on the occasion of World Cancer Day.

G.F.B : Does the response to treatment given to cancer patients vary from person to person?

This figure is staggering compared to half a million people who have disappeared following their infection with the coronavirus. This is why we say that the main pandemic that threatens humanity today is indeed «cancer».

Still, biological and hormonal treatments are the subject of studies carried out on patients of average weight, but doctors of course take into account deviations from normal weight. This is why reactions to treatment differ from one patient to another, even if it is the same diagnosis and the same stage of evolution of the pathology.

In addition, genes play a role in the patient’s resistance to infection, since they are formed and differentiated according to environmental factors and lifestyles.

G.F.B : Cancer, which is nicknamed «malignant tumor», is different from Covid-19, when we know that the human body can develop an immune shield to protect itself against the risk of infection by this virus, can we then say that cancer patients are more exposed to coronavirus than other patients?

Pr. S. A : Unfortunately, Covid-19 accentuates complications in cancer patients. This virus constitutes a risk or even a danger more than the other risks to which the cancer patient is exposed. This is why it is established that those who have had to undergo chemotherapy often end up with a weak immune system.

Pr. S. A : The patient’s response to treatment and diagnosis are based on the type of genes their body has as these play an important role throughout treatment. The weight of the patient must also be taken into account when prescribing the chemical or immune dose.

When we look at our Arab societies in the Mediterranean basin, we see that breast cancer is the most common, followed by lung cancer and the digestive system, more specifically the colon. This health situation differs from that of populations in Southeast Asia or the Western world because it is bladder cancer that is the most common there. It must also equal in statistics the lung cancer recorded in our region.

But let’s say that the health situation in our Arab countries is not so alarming. The number of people affected here by cancer does not exceed half or even one third compared to the figures recorded elsewhere.

However, we have recently noticed that the scourge of smoking is becoming more and more widespread in our region. Which can probably change the statistics since cigarette smoking is known to be the main cause of cancer.

G.F.B : Why has breast cancer become the most common and deadliest today?

Pr. S. A : There is no scientific or rational explanation for this finding. But I think that in our societies - this is of course a personal opinion - the dissemination of awareness programs and the increase in requests for screening have revealed the increase in the number of women affected by this type of cancer. . But we cannot say that this type of cancer is more (or less) frequent compared to previous years in the absence of these two factors in the past.

It should be noted here that science has not yet managed to explain the real causes of this disease which mainly affects women. The important thing is that it is now possible to guard against this cancer thanks to examinations for early detection of the disease and certain practices such as breastfeeding, pregnancy at a reasonable age, following a healthy diet , make sure to maintain an ideal weight, practice sports…

G.F.B : There is a controversy today about the negative impact of the coronavirus on the treatment of cancerous diseases. How does the spread of this virus affect the medical care of patients with this kind of pathology?

Pr. S. A : The studies revealed two important points: firstly, there was a delay in detecting the cancerous tumor, and this was due to apprehensions related to the fear of catching the virus if one went to the hospitals or medical laboratories to perform such tests.

As for the second point, it is the inability of hospitals and other health structures to take care of cancer GF&B MAGAZINE | Issue 9

patients, given that these places are overwhelmed

by the growing number of victims of Covid-19.

It is now difficult to make an appointment or find a bed given the scale of this pandemic.

G.F.B : There is a feeling of apprehension among people with cancer today about getting vaccinated against Civid-19. What is your comment on that?

Pr. S. A : far, there is no study indicating that cancer patients are advised against getting vaccinated to protect themselves against the risk of infection with the Covid-19 virus. According to the report of the American Association of Oncology, the anti-Covid vaccine does not pose any risk to the health of cancer patients.

G.F.B : What do you think of telemedicine and can you really get treatment remotely through the virtual world?

Pr. S. A : I think telemedicine is a qualitative step in the world of medicine today. This system will certainly develop more and more and spread to all the countries of the planet. But in our Arab societies, it seems quite difficult to apply this kind of system in the absence of any legislation and laws to explain the functioning of this modern device. Although we have sometimes dealt with our patients via the web and social networks, communication is still quite difficult.

Telemedicine requires, in addition to a societal culture, laws to control it before resorting to it, particularly in our societies.

G.F.B : Do you have any indications of deaths among cancer patients due to the Covid-19 vaccine?

Pr. S. A : It has not been proven so far that there have been deaths of patients with cancer or other diseases as a result of vaccination against the coronavirus, nor complications on their health . The human immune system is like an army comprising different forces (air, land and sea). The degree of complication of each type of treatment on these defense forces varies from patient to patient. We have found, for example, that the complications due to chemotherapy are simple and very limited in time. But for biological treatment, there are types of complications whose effect extends over a period of six months because they act on the strongest defense force of the immune system.

G.F.B : Are cancer patients considered contagious?

Pr. S. A : There is no possibility of transmitting the infection from the affected person to the unaffected person, since cancer is, so to speak, a cell that has deserted from a patient’s immune system. It is therefore not a foreign body transmitted from an infected person to a healthy person. On the contrary, it is rather feared that cancer patients receive viruses and bacteria from those around them.

G.F.B : Has the Covid-19 pandemic affected studies and research devoted to treatments for cancer patients?

Pr. S. A : Unfortunately yes! There has been, for example, a delay in the publication of the results of studies on the effectiveness of new drugs intended for cancer patients, given that all efforts have been focused at this time on the coronavirus pandemic.

G.F.B : Pr. Sana Al-Sukhun, despite the alarming situation induced by Covid-19, you still managed to publish many studies and research on the net.

Pr. S. A : The virtual world remains a wonderful space, although of course it cannot compensate for the direct contact and the warmth of being together.

My research published on the web was conducted in partnership with doctors from five continents. Each participant describes their own experience and presents their research in order to get to a consensual results.

I can cite here as an example the recommendations that we have made for the treatment of breast cancer in the Middle East region, taking into account this new context characterized by the pandemic.

G.F.B : To what extent is the origin of drugs a priority in the care of cancer patients?

Pr. S. A : This is a long topic to discuss, but I will say briefly that most anti-cancer drugs, especially newer ones, have not expired. But I believe it is more correct that they are made by the company that owns the patent.

It’s not because the drug is of American, Swiss or British origin, it’s mainly because there are drugs whose patent period has expired but are still authorized to be manufactured by companies in several countries of the world.

We all know that there are countries where control is as high as it is strict in the pharmaceutical industry, which is able to reassure us 42

about the reliability and effectiveness of the product.

G.F.B : In view of what is happening today to fight against Covid-19, don’t you think that a certain societal culture is an obstacle to our lifestyle and our behavior in dealing with epidemics and other serious diseases ?

Pr. S. A : I always say that we are fine, but we lack that awakening and deep reflection to overcome this epidemic. We must realize that there is no magic cure for Covid-19. Our salvation then lies in the cooperation of all humans with health institutions to make medicine and vaccines available to all in an equitable manner.

At the level of society, we very much regret these scenes where we see people walking around in closed places without wearing protective masks. This is a recklessness to stay upright since we do not yet realize that the coronavirus is, like cancer, a multi-tentacled monster that can grab you,reach you at any time and in any place.

Also, is it time for us to give up these annoying habits which unfortunately inform about a culture where much remains to be done to overcome this health crisis and regain health and well-being.

Teshima After a double degree in cooking and sommellerie in Japan, Ryuji Teshima followed a first course in French cuisine restaurants in Tokyo before continuing his training in France, in Epernay.

Perfectionist, he wishes to go further in the knowledge of the products. KHAWLA AL-SHEIKH The challenge of an exceptional woman

If all women who succeed in their work are not all lucky, it is clear that they belong for the most part to this category of women known for their perseverance, their combativeness above all their tenacity to force destiny and to succeed in everything they do.

«We are not born a woman: we become one», Simone de Beauvoir once said. The quote from this great French feminist undoubtedly refers to the kind of tenacious women who never back down in the face of adversity and who continue, throughout their lives, to impose themselves not only to succeed in their lives, but especially to be recognized in a society dominated until then by the male presence.

However, all these qualities necessary to success, are much more acute in a particular category of the fairer sex: self-taught women. Indeed, this kind of women are often inhabited by a great energy which makes them able to face all difficulties to take challenges. You can detect and feel it as soon as you meet a self-taught woman since she immediately shows determination, perseverance, even the passion to always want to transcend herself.

Another quality, the self-taught woman is never caught off guard, she is always ready for anything because she knows her abilities and her limits better than anyone. This is why she stands out for being that individual who knows herself the most. It must be said that the autodidact always learns from her own experiences which will help shape her vision of the world and thus enable her to achieve all her ambitions.

Al-Nashmia Khawla Al-Sheikh belongs to this category of woman who have succeeded in one of the fields of activity (plumbing).This courageous and persevering Jordanian woman commands respect today.

Glamour Fashion and Beauty went to meet her to tell us about her professional experience, her beautiful story crowned with success

G.F.B : Let’s start first with the idea that germinated in you and that prompted you to intrude into the arena of this difficult profession of plumbing, a profession reserved for men, particularly in Arab countries.

A. K : To be honest, I hardly expected this fate. So it was by pure chance that I found myself in this profession. Everything changed when I asked for a copy of my baccalaureate in Kuwait to be able to continue my university studies. At the time, I had a lot of free time since my children had grown up and become less dependent. So I wanted to have an occupation thinking of carrying out an activity outside home. I got married very early and that I was not able to finish my university studies.

As chance does many things, one day in 2002, I read an advertisement in a newspaper mentioning a seminar to be organized by a forum of Jordanian business and professional women, the title of which focuses on the rationalization of water Grave portal of Poulnabrone in Burren at sunrise, Ireland 2

consumption. I was quickly attracted to the subject since its theme seemed important at the time as it consisted of finding solutions to save water, especially since Jordan was one of the last ten poor countries in this precious material. I decided then to take part in this meeting and I became a female volunteer who could access private homes to make housewives aware of the importance of installing parts and other devices to save water.

One day, I found myself in one of these places, a housewife asked me if I could fix one of the taps in her house because there was a water leak.

I told her that I didn’t know and that I was only responsible for installing water-saving parts.

When I advised her to call a plumber, she replied that she could not do it, since she lived alone and their traditions and customs forbade bringing foreign men into the home. I then decided to transmit this problem to the Forum, which immediately decided to organize courses for the benefit of women wishing to learn about the maintenance of plumbing parts and other sanitary equipment. These courses lasted three months and sixteen (16) women benefited from them.

You should know that there were no women working in this field at the time. The weight of traditions made this profession the prerogative of men. But I decided to go there thanks to the encouragement of my husband who at the time was managing a housing construction company and who had at his disposal a whole team of plumbers.

After graduating, I worked with this team for two years. I then took an exam in 2006 to obtain a certificate of practice issued by a vocational training center.

G.F.B : How did your family members and community react to this news of your new profession? What was their reaction when they saw you in this area of ​​sewer maintenance and plumbing work?

A. K : My family members are a small community. Some of them were very supportive and others reluctant. My husband was the one who supported me the most. Without him, I would never have done this job and become an active woman inside and outside the home. As for my three children, one of them was initially reluctant to see his mother in this profession. But over time, he backed down and supported me after seeing the success I was achieving every day.

As for my mother, my father and my brothers, they all supported me. For the environment in which I live, what mattered most to me was to take up the challenge, especially at the start of my career. And it was natural since it was a new idea, the activity had until then been reserved for men. It was normal that we would not trust women exercising this kind of profession. But thanks to God and my determination, I managed to prove my professional knowledge. I also took this opportunity to help and train women to become real housewives capable of managing all aspects of their family home.

G.F.B : Does your decision to pursue this profession have any specific justifications?

Or was there a rather particular fact or event that prompted you to go into this profession?

A. K : There is a saying that goes, «Necessity is the mother of invention». From there, I decided to do a training in the maintenance of plumbing and sanitary equipment.

Faced with the problems of household management, the woman must have an additional role.

She is the main person responsible for water management in homes, especially when we know that our country, Jordan, has a pressing need for this precious material. So I decided to practice this profession, after meeting - as I already mentioned - this famous woman who lived alone and who had trouble fixing her tap. In addition, it is easier for a housewife to deal with a woman plumber than a man in this field.

G.F.B : The exercise of this activity requires qualification and experience. How have you been able to do in a field where it seems very difficult to win against men who still hold the keys to this profession?

A. K : When I finished my professional training in water main and sanitary maintenance in 2004, I immediately went into the field working with my husband and his team of plumbers for two years. I was then able to join a vocational training school where I obtained a certificate in 2006, not without success, a diploma attesting to a practical and theoretical mastery of this profession. With this certificate, I was able to practice this profession with confidence. I was able to respond to all the requests required by the activity of a plumber. So I went to various houses to work. My will and especially my self-confidence, I drew them from the encouragement of all those who believed in me and who supported me in the exercise of this profession.

G.F.B : Your profession evolved later. It has expanded to carry out development projects inside and outside the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Are there any government or international organizations that have helped spread your ideas?

A. K : To tell the truth, by persevering in this profession, I was able to have many fans who supported our project because it was unique in the region. This has prompted some local and foreign organizations to take an interest in our projects. I will cite as examples the German Agency for International Cooperation, the United States Agency for International Development and the European Union. At the local level, high-level Jordanian government agencies have started recruiting women from unconventional professions to work in maintenance departments within their institutions. This approach is considered the first of its kind in Arab countries that employ women in fairly specific professions.

G.F.B : This type of project seems to require a certain societal culture that prepares the ground for women to get involved. What are your main actions to make society aware of the importance of this kind of project?

A. K : Indeed, this kind of project must first have the consent of the company. This is all the more important as we live in an Eastern society governed by customs and traditions that often oppose this kind of activity. But over time and given the growing need to meet the financial demands of the family, our society is now beginning to adapt and accept that women invade virtually all areas of professional life.

This is how interest in this type of profession was born, thanks in particular to the actions of women’s charities, public and private schools, which have largely contributed to attracting female labor in jobs reserved until now to men.

G.F.B : Any collective or individual project and any ambition often come up against obstacles that could discourage its initiator and dampen their enthusiasm. Have you encountered such difficulties?

A. K : Yes, I encountered many pitfalls. I would probably surprise you if I told you that most of the difficulties I encountered throughout the exercise of my profession came from the woman herself.

This is explained by the unconsciousness and lack of culture that characterize women in our Eastern societies. Factors that make the woman lose confidence in herself and remain under the influence of people who influence her decisions. I felt frustrated several times because of these vagaries. But my greatest strength, I drew it from the encouragement and the unfailing support shown to me by Her Majesty Queen Rania Abdullah - God bless her - whom I had the honor to meet in 2015. She wanted to support me morally by posting her photo with me on her Facebook page. That was enough to motivate me even more to keep going.

G.F.B : The media is often a double-edged sword. They can enhance an initiative or a project as they can demolish them. What has been the press reaction to your activities?

A. K : The media is an essential and important factor in making any idea known. It is indeed a double-edged sword. But if they are used in a professional and constructive way, especially in the way of reporting information on sites and social networks or in newspapers and magazines, they can be very beneficial for the success of any project.

Personally, my first appearance in the media was in 2007 in a foreign media, precisely in the famous program «Kalam Nawaem» broadcast by the MBC channel in Lebanon. Then I participated in another program «Yessâd Sabahak» broadcast this time by the Jordanian television channel. These two appearances caused newspapers, magazines and other local channels Arab and foreign - to start taking an interest in me and reporting my activities. This has largely contributed to making me known in society and valuing the profession of plumber exercised by women.

G.F.B : Are there other professional activities that women can exercise without shame or complex in our masculine societies?

A. K : I confess that I do not hide my pride in being the pioneer in this unconventional work for women in Jordan. I was, the catalyst for women in my country to take up other projects such as air conditioning, refrigeration, car mechanics, work in gas stations, carpentry and even bodywork. I hope that women invade all the fields of activity previously reserved for men.

In 2016, I embarked in a project to create a vocational training center for unconventional trades for women. In 2019, the official inauguration of the «Sawaed Al-Nashmiya» maintenance center took place, which was carried out

by Ralph Koehing, deputy director of the United States Agency for International Development.

The same year, the film (Water Proof) was screened at the Documentary Film Festival in Germany, which retraced my life and highlighted the success of my projects. In 2021, we launched training for mobile phone maintenance for the benefit of the hearing impaired category.

G.F.B : What is the secret of your success in this difficult profession?Do you have a last word to tell us?

A. K : The secret to my success is my faith. I have always worked hard to achieve my goals , to try to change, even a little society’s view of women’s work in male professions.

I am not a lesson giver but if I can give any advice it is to always keep in mind the words of Napoleon Bonaparte: «Whoever says: ‘I can’t’, I will say to him: ‘Make an attempt «. who ever says, «It’s impossible», I will say to him, «Try». It is from there that I advise the woman to believe in herself and to do everything possible to realize her ideas, whatever the challenges and the difficulties she would face, because one day she will end up proving her capacity, no matter how long it takes.
