Contact us for departures

Leaving the busy Skaftafell National Park visitor center and its surroundings for an amazing, “off the beaten track” bike ride should be one of your easier choices while travelling around Iceland. We will bike over sands and bridged glacier rivers, past a glacier tongue and through one of Iceland’s tallest birch forests. This ride will take you from one extreme landscape to another while stopping at some of the locals best kept secrets. Biking through the Morsárdalur valley we will witness first hand the destructive path left by the quickly receding Morsárjökull glacier and the river it feeds. We will aim for a forest, yes - a forest in Iceland, formerly guarded by trolls and outlaws but open for those that join us on this ride. We will then leave our bikes behind for a short hike up Réttargil where we can soak our weary

feet while making our way along the smooth and beautifully carved out rocks. For the braver of the bunch there is the option to dive into true Icelandic spring water- it is as clear and cold as they say! Due to the National Parks restrictions on biking this is a unique opportunity to explore the park in a short amount of time, learning about the natural history of the area with our experienced guides. Rent a bike or bring your own and join us through this wonderland of fire and ice.

This incredible adventure will take you into the Vatnajökull National Park in South-East Iceland and onto the biggest glacier in Europe. We will take a 4-hour drive along the South Coast on the Skaftafell Express Coach and have lunch at the Skaftafell Visitor Center Cafe before starting our adventure. From there we will go for an exploratory hike on the glacier and feel the ancient ice under our feet and all around. High above us on the outlet glacier looms the massive Vatnajökull glacier in all its grandeur, a sight not soon forgotten. Geared up on crampons (metal spikes for the soles of our shoes) we walk on the ice and along the way we witness spectacular ice formations, winding sinkholes and deep ice crevasses. Our highly qualified glacier guides will tell you all about Vatnajökull glacier and the rough outlet glaciers that descend from the main hub, towards

the ocean. From here we continue onwards to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon on Breiðamerkursandur. This place is one of the absolute “must-sees” and there is no better way to explore it than on a boat. We will find ourselves gliding between huge icebergs, which constantly break away from the glacier tongue of Breiðamerkurjökull, producing a wonder world of ice, a sight hard to describe with words.

Stand on top of Iceland’s highest peak and cast your eyes over the biggest glacier mass in Europe with an unforgettable breathtaking panoramic view. To the north you can see mountains rising above the glacier plateau and to the south there are endless black sands being washed away by the Atlantic Ocean. This is certainly a unique experience that no adventurer should miss out on. The day before our estimated departure the guides will meet up with the group to discuss the details of the trip and go over logistics. At this time you will also be provided with the necessary equipment so that you can be ready for an early morning departure. Although there is no technical climbing involved in the ascent to the summit, it is both physically and mentally challenging and takes 10-14 hours. The Au départ de Skaftafell, au pied du Vatnajökull, nous partons de bon matin pour grimper les 2.119 m du sommet le plus haut d’Islande, le Hvannadalshnukur. total elevation gain is more than 2000m (6,500 ft) and the total walking distance is 23 km (14 miles). We will be moving over challenging terrain and crossing crevasses so an expert mountain guide and specialized glacier equipment such as ropes and crampons are essential. Glacier Hike Moutaineering

Trip difficulty: Hard 1 2 3 4 5

The southern coast offers some of the most majestic peaks in Iceland. These are scattered along the edge of the Vatnajökull icecap, Europe’s largest glacial mass. Perhaps the most known and sought after of these is Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland’s highest peak. This trip however focuses on its surrounding peaks, the often forgotten slightly smaller brothers and sisters of the highest peak. These ascents offer a true Icelandic mountaineering experience of solitude and serenity, away from the crowds and off the beaten path. Scaling peaks seldom climbed by others, aside from the few locals that make their way to these summits, is a unique opportunity. It offers the essence of what mountaineering is all about, good company, amazing views and no crowds. There are many peaks to choose from and they vary in difficulty. But they all share these two things; they are almost

impossible to pronounce and they offer magnificent views over the surrounding landscape in all directions. To the north is the expansive Vatnajökull icecap and to the south lies the North Atlantic Ocean, curving on the horizon as far as the eye can see. It is a truly magnificent sight, inspiring appreciation for the saying “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey”. Upon request we arrange guided hikes to Hrútfjallstindar, Þverártindsegg, Sveinstindur and all the other classics in the area.
