Sheffield Volunteering has projects right across Sheffield. From activities right on your doorstep to exploring the wild and wonderful Peak District, you can experience amazing things by volunteering. Our Give it a Go volunteering days are the best way to give volunteering a try. Each activity is designed as a taster day, enabling you to try something new and gain new skills. They are perfect with friends and a great way to meet like-minded people. All activities including transport are free. For all our volunteering, no experience is required. You do not need to buy a ticket from the Box Office, instead book your place in the Sheffield Volunteering office in your Sheffield Students' Union. (Mon to Fri, 10am - 5pm)

Spring Clear Out at a Homeless Shelter WEDNESDAY 18TH APRIL 9AM - 2PM Do you love having a good old tidy? Do you want to help the homeless? This activity at the Cathedral Archer Project is for you! Sort through and organise the stores, where all the donated food, clothes, and sleeping bags are kept. Donations are vital because they allow the charity to provide hot breakfasts, lunches and food parcels five days a week. Volunteers are also welcome to stay for lunch.

Help Tackle Food Poverty FRIDAY 20TH APRIL, SATURDAY 21ST APRIL 10.30AM - 3.30PM Food Banks are vital sources of food for many families. Be part of the team collecting food for a Food Bank in the Burngreave area of Sheffield at a supermarket. You will hand out shopping lists to shoppers as they enter the store and collect donations as they leave. Your time is invaluable to enable the project to provide food parcels to people facing crisis in the community.


Tea Dance SATURDAY 21ST APRIL 10.15AM - 3PM Hosted by the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind, this is a wonderful day to remember! Volunteers will help the Tea Dance to go with a swing by serving tea and cake, chatting to the guests, and joining in with the dancing. No dance skills are required as the dancing will be led by the Ballroom Dancing Society, but be prepared to socialise.

Whinfell Quarry Gardens SATURDAY 21ST APRIL SATURDAY 19TH MAY 9AM - 12.45PM Step back in time and into spring at this beautiful, hidden Victorian garden. There will be a variety of gardening tasks for your green fingers, including path clearing, pruning and general tidying, to get the gardens ready for spring and accessible to all visitors. Get out into the fresh air for a healthy and invigorating morning!

Support Mission to on a Sunday Revision Help secondary school pupils shine in their exams this summer! Support teachers to deliver classroom revision sessions in Science, English and Maths. You need to be confident in the subject, but don’t need to be studying it or have specific experience. Choose from:

Zest Up a Community Garden WEDNESDAY 25TH APRIL 1PM - 5PM Zest community centre in Upperthorpe has a former landscaped garden and basketball court in need of a facelift! Tidy the garden and plant new seeds so the wildflowers, fruit trees and birds come to life. Help make the space accessible for the local dog walkers, children, families and older people.

Get creative with fruit and make a selection of smoothies for the guests at Ben’s Centre. This friendly day centre and outreach service in Sheffield city centre supports vulnerable adults who have a range of issues from homelessness and addiction, to social isolation. Chat and interact with guests whilst boosting everybody’s health! Join them for lunch too.

Volunteering

Manor Lodge Secret Gardens WEDNESDAY 2ND MAY 12.30PM - 3.15PM At the beautiful historical Sheffield Manor Lodge and Manor Oaks Farm, there are a variety of tasks to do whilst listening to robins and other birds sing in the hedges. Tidy the gardens and collect wildflower seeds around the 1940s cottage. You’ll meet our lovely pygmy goats, donkeys, guinea pigs, rabbits and more on the day too!

Take Action in your Green City FRIDAY 4TH MAY 10AM - 3PM Boost your physical and emotional health, and do some worthwhile outdoor work on this community allotment digging, clearing, planting and weeding. Green City Action are an award-winning charity raising awareness of environmental issues and improving Sheffield’s green spaces.

Are you passionate about organic crops and sustainability? Join the friendly Hillside Harvest team to develop the land in a wildlife friendly way. Gain an insight into growing your own food and maintaining an allotment whilst out in the fresh air.

Awesome Allotment WEDNESDAY 9TH MAY 10AM - 3PM Create a positive, healthy environment for the St Wilfrid’s homeless community. Work alongside clients to give the allotments a makeover and prepare them ready for planting. You will see the garden come alive! Lunch will be provided at the centre.

Get out in the fresh air, give your body a light workout and get your hands into the soil! Help nature to flourish and give practical support to a project which offers adults and children the chance to engage with the land and animals. Your work will be admired by our alpacas and chickens who will expect you to feed them before you go.

Refugee Conversation Club FRIDAY 11TH MAY 1 PM - 4.30PM Spend an afternoon meeting new people at this friendly conversation club. Chat to refugees and asylum seekers who are looking to improve their English and learn a bit more about British culture. This is an amazing opportunity to get to know people from across the world.


Get on your bike with Sustrans SATURDAY 12TH MAY 10AM - 3PM Help Sustrans create happier, healthier communities and a better environment for us all. Volunteers will cycle along the National Cycle Network and gain an insight into developing new routes, maintenance and biodiversity and being a wildlife champion. Having your own bike is preferred but not essential.

Get muddy at Manor Fields Park! WEDNESDAY 16TH MAY 12.30PM - 3.15PM How much wildlife will you spot? The perfect alternative to the library, you will get involved in a whole variety of tasks, from clearing brambles to planting trees. All this will improve the quality of the park for local people and wildlife.

Brilliant Biodiversity THURSDAY 17TH MAY 9.30AM - 1.15PM Get your wellies on and lend a hand on this practical conservation day at Wardsend Cemetery. Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust to promote the biodiversity of the river corridor and improve access to this unique site on the banks of the River Don. Tasks will include invasive weed management, footpath maintenance and litter/debris removal. Refreshments provided.

Boccia Time Keepers SATURDAY 19TH MAY, SUNDAY 20TH MAY 9AM - 5PM Take a break from revision and gain new skills whilst learning about a unique and growing Paralympic sport. Keep time and score of matches at the Boccia National Championships. Full training will be provided.

Sheffield Students’ Union’s Give it a Go Course programme is packed full of activities, events and experiences. Every year thousands of students take part in Give it a Go, and you should too!

BUYING TICKETS

Tickets for all activities are on sale at the Students’ Union Box Office (tel: 0114 222 8777) and are available to buy onlinesheffieldsu.com/ events Tickets MUST be purchased in ADVANCE and your Student, SIC or Gold Life Membership uCard must be shown at the Box Office in order to buy your tickets. Demand for Give it a Go is massive and events can sell out very quickly, so please buy your ticket early to avoid disappointment and please note that you cannot turn up and pay on the door! Unfortunately, all tickets purchased are nonrefundable and cannot be exchanged or transferred. If the event organiser cancels the activity, a full refund will be given from the Students’ Union Box Office. Participants will be informed of cancellations via facebook and twitter, and email where possible.

Unsure of where to go? Go to the map on page 3 of the programme. If the location reads ‘The Edge’ in Endcliffe, ‘The Ridge’ in Ranmoor or ‘The SU’ (Students’ Union), just meet outside the Reception. Goodwin Sports centre is located on Northumberland Road (on your way up to Crookes)

WOMEN’S MINIBUS

For evening activities in the Students’ Union, the Women’s Minibus will take you home to your door anywhere within a 2-mile radius of the Union. The service runs at half past every hour and tickets cost just £1.50 from the Students’ Union Box Office.

WOMEN'S COMMITTEE

The Women's Campaign at the University of Sheffield Students' Union consists of the Women's Officer and the Women's Committee. Together they work to make your student experience free from discrimination and sexism, alongside the other Liberation Campaigns. Look out for the Women’s Committee logo to see events for self-defining women.
