Don’t forget to be ready for the weather! Studded boots are recommended, but trainers are fine too.

GRINDLEFORD CIRCULAR WALK

STUDIO, SU

SUNDAY 23 FEBRUARY 09:40-16:00

MEET IN THE SHEFFIELD RAILWAY STATION, UNDER THE DEPARTURE BOARDS Welcome back! Join us for a walk through the Peak District. We’ll head along Froggatt and Curbar Edges, and end back in Grindleford cafe, to sample the infamously large chip portions! (Total length 12.1km/8.4 miles). Tickets MUST be purchased in advance, the price of the ticket does not include train or bus fair. Wear sensible footwear (something comfortable, hardy and water-resistant). You’ll also need a waterproof coat, warm clothing, lunch, snacks and enough water for the day. Please, for your own safety, don’t wear jeans. In adverse weather they get wet and stay wet, which could make you very cold. At the walking club we try and make walks fun and enjoyable, all while keeping everyone safe. By coming on a walk, you recognise that hiking outdoors is an activity that carries a danger of personal injury or death. Individuals should be responsible for their own actions and involvement. Therefore, if we tell you not to do something and you get hurt we cannot be held responsible.

£4

This course will give a solid introduction to the concepts of self-defence including: psychology, situational awareness, avoiding confrontation, diffusing confrontation and the actual physical act of defending yourself. Over the five weeks you will learn basic blocking techniques, defences to common grabs and strangles, how to effectively strike your opponents as well as vulnerable points to attack when in trouble. To supplement this, some basic combat anatomy will be discussed, enabling you to learn locks and pins to overpower people much stronger than yourself. This will culminate in a practical exam that will test and prove your knowledge. Should you pass, you will be issued with an award certificate and HEAR (if applicable).

As a member of the SU, you can engage in all areas of democratic decision making. Whether that is electing diverse leaders who represent your interests, or participation in decision-making through referenda, petitions, debates, surveys and discussions. Every year current students campaign for one of the 8 elected Officer positions. The Officers are the key decision makers within the Students Union and form the leadership team which will take our SU forward next year. Any student can run, this might be your chance!
