CENTRO DI GRAVITÀ PERMANENTE

San Donà di Piave, Venice. Italy 2021-2022

Professor: Alberto Ferlenga

Student: Giulio Dalle Vedove

The thesis project focuses on the regeneration of a materials storge area intending to value an unfnished project by the Portuguse architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. During the months of my master’s thesis development, I had the honor of discussing my project with the architect Álvaro Siza during four meetings in his office in Oporto. The chosen area is located in a strategic position, as it would allow clearing the street, currently closed, that passes in front of Siza’s building. In this way, it would quickly approach the athletics, tennis, football, and rugby fields, therefore creating a direct connection between what is the city’s sports center and what could be a potential cultural center. Everything is regulated by a square of 30*30 meters that allows dialogue between the two buidigs and can be used for various events at the same time. On the one hand, the project functions are intended to provide support to activities already hosted by the Dimensione Fuoco project. In this wise, the functions conceived are the following: a library that works independently from the rest of the building;an atrium that distributes accesses; an exhibition area, which can be placed in contact with the existing one inside the unfinished building; two coworking spaces, one more open with several workstations and one divided into 8 rooms in order to allow working in a more isolated way, alone or in a group. In addition to these elements, there is also a bar that faces a courtyard designed around an existing tree.

The main focus of the project for “Quinta das Lamas” is not to modify or demolish the main historic buildings. In this sense, only small volumes that were in the surroundings were removed - in order to create an organization in the space surrounding the building. This order is later dictated by the extension of the highest point of the property, thus creating a landscaped platform that takes as reference the directions of the pre-existing wall that delimits the area of the project. All the generating lines of the project are dictated by the existing buildings, thus creating an organic nature of the area.

This platform host the swimming pool’s space, which is in strong relation to the private garden of the Quinta and the space of the gym, through a patio that creates an external space of transition between the two spaces, also favoring natural light. Thus extending the upper level of the project, the two main buildings are thus joined by a volume that creates a new entrance of natural light to the semi buried floor and a second entrance to the study rooms that are all located at the upper level, thus creating a net division between the two functions of the project.

This project focuses on the completion of an urban block in Milan, near the “Porta Nuova” entrance. A careful study was given to the conformation of the volumes, which with a cantilevered elevation on the pre-existing porch wall intends to close the facade of the block on the main street, while on the secondary street it intends to break through the elevation, favoring the entrance to a street that cuts through the block in two, which is still held together by a “U ribbon” that ties the whole project.

After a look at the solids and voids of the block, we decided to give a very free layout to the ground floor, making both courtyards accessible, but giving them a precise hierarchy. The largest courtyard houses an exhibition area below, at ground level there is a restaurant, a showroom, a gym and small craft shops, on the upper floors we find student accommodation, duplex accommodation and penthouses of different sizes; while the second smaller courtyard aims to give a more peaceful atmosphere to that area of the project which will house a library, an asylum, a co-working space, housing for the elderly, temporary housing and lofts on the top floor. Everything will be supported by two undergorund floors that will host parking lots.

The project focuses on the reuse of the high school “Leonardo da Vinci” in Treviso, which was in a state of decay. During the inspection, we noticed how the classrooms in the basement were dark and most of the rooms were empty due to the lack of students, so much so that the other two adjacent schools occasionally use some spaces inside the school.

Therefore, we first concentrated on uniting the three high schools as a large campus, designing a very flexible space along the west road, which, by means of a continuous canopy, could create seats and access portals to the area and contain areas of parking for cars and buses and at the same time marking the limit of the campus.

A a new straight building was added supporting the schools, to host other classrooms and a library on the top floor as a place to study, thus making the whole area continuously usable for students and citizens. The corridor spaces have also been redesigned with seats in front of each classroom and the spaces have been emptied to make the corridor no longer a place of passage, but a place of conviviality during breaks. Finally, the classrooms have been redesigned to be joined in groups of two to be able to host multiple events and conferences at the same time even more redesigning the desks. The classrooms in the basement have been made more comfortable by digging the ground fill in order to have a larger glass surface.

This project focuses on the design of a small part of the city in the municipality of Massanzago (PD).

The project is developed in an area in which a supermarket, a civic center and two types of housing will be inserted, one of value and the other of lower cost. The first part of the course focuses on the organization of common areas and the location of buildings within the project area. On the left side of the intervention area there is the “landing” area with parking lots that run the entire length of the lot.

Considering that the area overlooks the main road in two points, we thought it appropriate to place the civic center divided into two parts according to the two functions (library + bar and exhibition area), both connected by a shelter that delimits the space of the public square together with the supermarket; and it is the supermarket that divides the residential area from the public one.

The student residence, 12m wide and 100m long, located on the island of Poveglia (VE). The main themes of the workshop were the relationship with the pre-existence, the regulatory layout and the architectural detail.

The project develops from cells of 6m by 6m. The single cells (3m high and located on the first floor) have a bedroom with wardrobes and desk, a private bathroom and a terrace. The double cells (6m high and located on the second floor), are characterized by the double height mezzanine on which the beds are placed separated by two walls that house the central stairs; in addition, each bedroom has an independent exit on the roof level. While below the sleeping area we find the living area with a bathroom, a movable wall where you can draw and two desks for the study. Each cell can be reached via a walkway connected to the central gallery. In the central area we find the common areas with bathrooms, kitchenette, stairwell and at the ends the two study rooms.

This project is located in the middle of the lagoon, close to the island of Mazzorbo (VE). The house, which stands on stilts, had to fit a perimeter of 6m by 21m and not exceed two floors. In the plan we note the longitudinal subdivision of the served and serving spaces (bathrooms, staircase, corridor) of 4m and 2m respectively. On the ground floor there is the presence of a patio that divides and arranges the kitchen and living room spaces, to the west a 12m long window opens the entire façade onto the lagoon, as well as the terrace on the south front. The last floor mainly develops the bedrooms area, with a master bedroom with a private bathroom, and a double bedroom with equipped wall from which the beds come down. The peculiarity of the double room is the movable wall positioned in the center that allows you to divide the room into two individual spaces or to join them.
