From the Editor I love being able to chat with you in every issue! Editing this magazine (for about five years!) has been one of the many wonderful blessings I’ve experienced this past year.

Do you use the winter season as a time to reflect? I do. In 2015, I had the opportunity to backpack in seven countries and two continents across the Mediterranean. (Thanks Lily, for covering for me in the Fall issue so I could make this dream a reality!) You can read more about that on page 32. While this threemonth journey is a big memory, sometimes the best memories to reflect on are the little ones.

Some of my favorite 2015 memories were associated with Girlz 4 Christ. Brainstorming with the writers, interviewing the role models featured‌ especially interacting with our readers! Could you help me make a memory by sending me a message on what YOU have been reflecting on?

What’s the greatest gift anyone has ever given you? Clothes? Chocolate? The newest iPhone?

Although the chocolate flavored beef jerky a friend gave me a few years back was pretty spectacular (it’s a long story), the greatest gift I’ve ever received came from God. Ask most Christians what they think the greatest gift God ever gave mankind was and most will say “Jesus!” And that’s a great answer, but Jesus coming to earth wasn’t all there was to God’s gift. It wouldn’t have done us much good if Jesus had just stopped by, chilled for a while, healed a few people, and then left.

Some people say that salvation is the greatest gift God’s ever given the human race, and

that’s true, but what did God have to offer us in order to make salvation and a relationship with Him possible?

The answer that comes to my mind is grace.

Most Bible scholars define grace as unmerited favor; an undeserved gift. We didn’t deserve for God to sacrifice His Son for us. We didn’t deserve for Jesus to take our place on the cross.

God’s grace and mercy made way for the greatest gift ever extended to the human race: a relationship with God, and eternity with Him in heaven. By God’s mercy He forgave our sins, and paid for them with Jesus’ own blood.

Twelve Days of Verses Because of God’s grace we can experience all the other gifts that come with it: joy, hope, forgiveness, companionship, peace, security, courage, confidence, and so much more! God’s grace is not only a gift for us to relish and enjoy, but one He implores us to give to others.

How can you show mercy and grace to someone in your life? It could be a friend who’s backstabbed you, a sibling who’s angered you, or a parent or mentor who’s failed to live up to your expectations. The more you pass on God’s grace to others, the more you comprehend His grace toward you, and the more you begin to comprehend His grace, the more joy and peace and confidence you’ll receive. It’s a win-win. So take a moment and ask God who He wants you to show grace to today.

It’s pretty unavoidable to hear Christmas songs everywhere you go in December. Some may be enjoyable, but others can get tiresome, especially after hearing twelve different renditions of the “Twelve Days of Christmas”. Here’s a Christmas season challenge: if you have to listen to a carol you don’t like, tune it out by saying a verse you’ve memorized instead. Here are twelve of my suggestions, one for every day of Christmas.

I’ll take Jesus over six geese-a-layin’ or eleven drummers drumming any day! (Although to be honest, I wouldn’t complain if somebody gave me five gold rings!)

Do you have any childhood Christmas memories you’d like to forget?

account in Luke’s gospel? Why was the gift of Jesus so remarkable?

One that stubbornly sticks with me after all these years happened at my aunt and uncle’s house. When we children opened our gifts, I pouted because I liked my brothers’ better.

To answer that question, we need to go back to the Old Testament.

Still Timely Today

Clearly, I missed the point.

Whoa, stop right there. Isn’t the Old Testament outdated?

Even as young adults, we can still miss the point. We get so wrapped up in shopping, programs, parties and gift exchanges that Christmas passes without us pausing to remember the reason we celebrate: God’s gift of His Son.

Just because something is old doesn’t make it outdated. I visited an antique mall a few weeks back and learned that quite the opposite is true. Instead of depreciating, antique items actually increase in value.

Perhaps you’re thinking: I’ve heard the story a hundred times. Manger. Shepherds. Angels.

Wise men. Glory to God. After all, A Charlie Brown Christmas airs at least five times a season.

I enjoy Snoopy like the next girl, but I want us to look deeper. What built up to the familiar

II Timothy 3:16 makes clear that all Scripture has merit: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness …

(NKJV, emphasis added) The New Testament doesn’t replace the Old. It underscores its authenticity.

There is an inseparable connection between the two. What is prophesied in the Old Testament we find accurately fulfilled in the New Testament.

The Christmas story is a perfect example.

The Prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 In Isaiah chapter seven, God sent the prophet Isaiah to King Ahaz of Judah, a wicked king facing a big problem.

At this time, Israel was divided into two kingdoms, the north (Israel) and the south (Judah). Simply put, neither liked the other very much.

One of my favorite verses in all of Scripture is part of Gabriel’s response: For with God nothing shall be impossible.

(Luke 1:37, KJV) What an amazing thought! Nothing was impossible with God then. Nothing is impossible with God now. An Old Testament sign that contradicted the very laws of nature came to pass in the New Testament.

The northern king was teaming up with Syria against Judah, and the outlook looked grim; but God had other plans, and they didn’t include Judah being taken captive just now.

In fact, they involved using a mutual enemy, the Assyrians, to attack Israel to prevent them from coming against Judah.

Since Ahaz wasn’t one to trust God, Isaiah challenged him to ask God for a sign that Judah would be spared at present; but stubborn, self-righteous Ahaz refused to ask.

God’s response? He promised a sign, not for unbelieving Ahaz, but for the whole house of Davidi.

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

(Isaiah 7:14, NKJV) Jump forward hundreds of years to the familiar passage in Luke chapter one. The angel Gabriel appeared to a virgin named Mary and explained that she would be God’s chosen vessel to bear “the Son of the Highest” (Luke 1:26-33).

Mary asked the same question King Ahaz probably wondered: How will this be, since I am a virgin? (Luke 1:34b, ESV)

A Name Speaks Hope The name Immanuel literally means “God with us.”

Wicked King Ahaz would not see the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy in his day; however, if he listened to God’s prophet, he would have heard this message: in my immediate crisis, God is with me.

Another Prophecy Fulfilled King Herod’s evil edict to destroy male babies two years old and younger was also predicted by the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah.

“A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted for her children, Because they are no more.” (Jeremiah 31:15, NKJV) GIRLZ4CHRISTMAGAZINE.ORG

The Prophecy of Micah 5:2 Another Old Testament prophecy pinpoints the exact location of this miraculous birth.

You see, the Old Testament not only predicted that it would happen, but also specified where it would happen…seven hundred years in advance.ii Micah was a contemporary of Isaiah; while Isaiah was sent to Judah, Micah primarily prophesied to Israel. At this time, both kingdoms were under attack by the dreaded Assyrians.

However, as we saw earlier in Isaiah’s prophecy, Judah would not fall (but later be taken captive by the Babylonians); while Samaria, the capital of Israel, would soon be destroyed by the Assyrians (Micah 1:6).iii The impending judgments of destruction and captivity seemed to spell the end of the Davidic line, but God had long ago promised that a king would not fail of the line of David (2 Samuel 7:13, Jeremiah 33:17). The One – The Messiah – from the line of David would come.

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting. (Micah 5:2, NKJV) Flash forward those seven hundred years. The wise men of King Herod’s day studied the Old Testament scrolls and were keenly aware of what Micah had said. (Clearly, these wise men found studying the Old Testament worth their time!)

They also knew the prophecy which predicted “a Star shall come out of Jacob” (Numbers 24:17, NKJV).

Thus, when the wise men saw a brilliant star above Bethlehem, they were confident the King of the Jews had been born (Matthew 2:2).

Even more interesting is that King Herod didn’t dismiss them as crazy old men. Instead, his reaction gave validity to their assessment.

Herod ordered the mass murder of all male babies in Bethlehem two years old and younger to eradicate any possible threat by another king to his throne (Matthew 2:16-18).

However, in His providence, God warned Jesus’ earthly father Joseph to take Mary and baby Jesus to Egypt to protect Him from Herod (Matthew 2:13).

Once again, the New Testament perfectly fulfilled the prediction of the Old Testament.

The Greatest Gift Possible The Christmas miracle is God’s “indescribable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15) of His most precious Son Jesus Christ who came to earth to redeem mankind – just as the Old Testament foreshadowed.

True satisfaction doesn’t come from getting a gift you won’t even remember this time next year; it comes from accepting the gift of God’s Son (John 3:16).

The Right Place at the Right Time

Have you ever had a dream? Of course you have. It may not have necessarily occurred during your REM sleep, but we’ve all had hopes for the future, near and far. We hope to succeed in life. We hope to win that award.

We hope to make the team. We hope for minute to swing by the coffee shop.

What is your vision for your future? If you could do anything with your life and your future, what would you do? Travel the world?

Do missionary work overseas? Get married and live happily ever after, the end? Everyone has dreams—some bigger than others. Many times, these ambitions and passions are Godgiven aspirations for our lives deposited within us.

It can fun to dream about the future. There’s mystery and excitement about the sunshine around the corner—what will tomorrow hold?

It’s a totally natural, healthy part of moving forward with life.

But what about right now? God has us exactly where He needs us to be right now. We’ve got to learn to trust Him, trust His plans, and trust His Word. Psalm 139:16 makes it clear that God

planned out every single day of our lives before we even existed. And, if that isn’t encouraging enough, God tells us in Jeremiah 29:11 that He’s got good plans for us!

Often times, it seems like there’s a rush to get to the climax of the story God’s written for us.

Well, if He’s got great plans for me, then how come my life is so boring and dry? So hard? So ____? Do ever feel that way, like life lacks the flavor and purpose you desire? Join the club, I think we all do sometimes. We go through seasons of waiting, sometimes even seasons of trial and loneliness.

As trying as these times may be, they are often the times when we grow the most—we either grow closer or further from God, depending on our response. We can (a) grow bitter and angry at God and try out the world’s way to see if it makes us feel any better, or (b) put full trust and confidence in God and know that He’s working things out for us and we don’t need to worry.

Hint: (B) is definitely the right choice. This is what we would call contentment: no matter where you are in life—whether it be on the GIRLZ4CHRISTMAGAZINE.ORG

mountaintop of extreme bliss and incandescent happiness, in the “depths of despair” (as Anne Shirley of Green Gables would put it), in an uneventful, boring season of life, or even in a time of intense struggle— God is there, He is good, He is faithful—and we choose to rejoice and make the best of where we are, just because of that. We choose to trust God in keeping us put. We have confidence in the Almighty Maker that He knows what He’s doing and where He’s taking us.

Of course, I can’t say it better than Paul does in Philippians 4:11-13 (NASB): “Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

Hear that? It’s not us on our own strength. We can thrive in life with perfect contentment only on Christ’s strength! It’s Jesus who makes us strong. By trusting and delighting in the Lord, we are doing what we as humans were created to do—to worship God. And, as Christians, this is the ultimate calling: trusting, loving, abiding, knowing, seeking—drawing closer to God. Don’t lose your ambitions, your hopes, your dreams. They have a place even in the now.

Don’t be idle, either—get busy being content!

Prepare for the future. Strengthen your relationship with God. See what you can do about your passions and interests now. Maybe your church needs another singer on the worship team—there’s an outlet for your passion for music right now. Find a volunteer opportunity to do missions in your own town.

Have you considered starting a business?

Organizing an event? Creating a project?

Writing a book?

You know, if we take a good hard look at our lives right now—no matter what they look like— we can still find things to be thankful, joyful, and content about. We’re alive. We’re breathing. There’s a God pursuing us and intimately involved in our everyday lives. He’s at work all around us.

Let’s be Proverbs 31 women, content and busy at work to advance the Kingdom of God, anytime and anyplace.

From Model to Christian Leader

In our last issue we published an interview with Nicole Weider. This is part two, but instead of an interview, Nicole is going to share more about her life story and modeling as a career (as told to Lily Garay).

As a little girl, you don’t see all the dark parts of modeling. It all seems glamorous at first. Beautiful pictures, invitations to exclusive parties, and a paycheck. There were so many events that led to my depression. While many circumstances led to becoming depressed, the largest contributing factor was that I was working as a model. I was always placed in such scrutiny by my agents and they would always pick me apart by telling me I was not thin enough and my skin wasn’t clear enough. I would work hard to be what they wanted. I lost weight and I got hair extensions, but when you go to the auditions there are twenty other women that look exactly like you and it’s so much pressure. I didn’t like making money based on my looks and would more likely than not end up feeling so embarrassed modeling lingerie, bras, and bikinis. I started feeling so bad about myself and being uncomfortable.

My whole identity was based in being a successful model so when I didn’t want that anymore I was left with, “Well what do I do now?” I wasn’t a Christian and I had no sense of safety or security.

I had this one friend, Christie, who always stood by my side. She would always talk to me about Jesus and she seemed so happy.

She really helped me through the process of learning what Christianity was about and why it was so amazing. I saw how much my life needed changing. While I was giving my life to God, He showed Himself in huge ways to me. He basically showed me, “Nicole, I’m listening to you and I’m here.” Every once in GIRLZ4CHRISTMAGAZINE.ORG

“While I was giving my life to God, He showed Himself in huge ways to me.” a while I get distracted in my walk, but I always remind myself of the radical change I had. God is always watching out for me. It’s pretty much my second nature now. I always think in the back of my mind, “Will this make God proud?” Most importantly becoming a Christian changed my heart and perspective!

I do modeling now to be creative along with my friends who are photographers and on my own terms. It’s wonderful only having to do it if and when I want to. My life isn’t dependent on getting “this next job”. Once you become a Christian a lot of your desires don’t go away, they just change. Dressing up and getting glam is still something that I find fun, but I can use it to glorify God versus my agent now.

Girls, don’t fall into the trap of “I’m not pretty enough”. The sexualization of teen girls is everywhere. No matter where you turn it’s in magazine ads or beauty products.

Basically, the entertainment world says that the only appeal of teen girls is in how sexy they are or what they look like. Your worth comes from character and heart, not looks.

This is a story about a few girls and a great God who, in one night, had their lives collide in a unique way!

Mikaela is a 16-year-old in Southern Oregon.

One evening at youth group, she heard about an event called Silver Ring Thing. “I had already known prior that I wanted to save myself for marriage…it sounded really beneficial and interesting to hear from people who made the same decision I did, or were at least advocating for it.”

Several other girls (and guys!) were headed to Mikaela’s hometown. They were part of Silver Ring Thing’s National Touring Team, which leads programs across the United States and internationally. They are all very passionate about their mission as they spend nine months a year on the road! Before they led the conference that Mikaela would attend, G4C’s editor Jessica Lippe sat down with a couple of the female leaders to find out why they are doing what they do.

“There’s definitely a fire in my heart to minister to teenagers; to tell people the gospel, the hope, and the amazing lifestyle that comes with surrendering your life to Christ,” team member Kristen described her passion for this ministry, and for being on the touring team. “When you’re surrounded a community of believers 24/7, it’s impossible not to grow! It’s such a blessing to be a part of something like this. We encourage each other and hold each other accountable.”

Kristen excitedly explained how purity can be a constant choice for everyone. “Yesterday

ended last night, and this morning is a new day! It says in Lamentations how every morning, God’s grace is new. Every day is a new day, every hour is a new hour, every minute is a new minute!”

That evening, Kristen performed among the rest of the touring team, while Mikaela sat among the crowd. All were thankful for the end result as many of the students in attendance took a purity pledge. “I learned how many people actually made this decision and it really helped me to feel more confident than I was prior,” Mikaela told us. “I also found it beneficial to hear from those who hadn’t saved themselves for marriage and regretted it because that made my choice seem even clearer. It was also really cool to see how many guys participated in buying rings afterwards… knowing that I wasn’t condemning myself to ‘slim pickings’.”

(Losing your virginity isn’t the same as losing your purity!) The exact meaning and reasons vary for each person, but Kristen says the reasoning for her ring is because “it’s been a reminder to me when I’m tempted or forget why I’m doing what I’m doing.” Mikaela also got a ring that she’s chosen to wear until it is replaced by a wedding ring. She says the ring “really helps me to stay mindful of my decisions in my day-to-day life.”

aby itter Whether you're the first person all the parents in your neighborhood call for their babysitting needs, or you've never watched a kid before, we can all learn something about being a babysitter. This is a great time of year to baby-sit as adults encounter more get-togethers and shopping excursions leading up to Christmas, New Year’s, and other various occasions. Did you know that babysitters are also missionaries? You make a huge (hopefully positive) impact on the lives of the children you watch, and it's a great opportunity to reflect Christ. Grab a pen a paper and take some notes on The Babysitters' Handbook, as a helpful reminder of how you can best serve the Lord when you're responsible for younger kids. We'll start off with a pop quiz!

Quiz! What Would You Do? 1. A family asks you to babysit on Tuesday at 3pm. Your school doesn't release until 3:15.

What should you do?

A. Leave your last class early so you can make it to your job on time B. Tell the parents you can't C. Explain to the parents your school hours

B. Call your mom or dad and tell them your secret word.

C. Call an adult with a driver's license and explain that Mrs. Johnson is drunk and you need a ride home. While waiting for them to pick you up, offer coffee, a place to lie down, and other tricks you've heard for sobering up.

2. The mom you babysit for is responsible for driving you home after her date night. But when she arrives back, you can tell she is drunk. How do you handle this?

A. Be polite by getting in the car and going home with her.

3. The parents you babysit for know that you're a Christian, but they tell you that they are not and will not allow you to "force feed your religion" with their children. What should be your response?

A. Quit sitting for them.

B. Respect their wishes.

C. Secretly read Bible stories to the kids 4. You're babysitting an infant who has not stopped crying since you arrived. What can you do?

A. Set the baby in a crib, leave the room, and focus on calming yourself down first.

B. Shake the baby until he stops.

C. Yell and cry so that you're louder than the baby.

5. You were only away from the three-year-old you babysit for two minutes to take a bathroom break,

but now you can't find her anywhere. What’s your plan of action?

A. Lure her out of her hiding place by turning on the TV and getting out snacks.

She'll come is she wants to join the fun.

B. Call her name while quickly searching all the places in and around the house where she might be.

C. Call her parents and the police.

Quiz Answers 1. C. Your studies should take priority over babysitting. To avoid a similar situation from happening in the future, notify the family of hours you are not available. It's possible that they may be able to rearrange their plans to accommodate your schedule.

2. B. Alcohol affects different people in different ways. But because it affects someone's judgement first, it is never a good idea to get in a car with a drunk person. Announcing to others that someone's drunk or trying to care for them can make them angry, and ultimately embarrassed. Just say that you want to call your parents to let them know you're coming home. Before you begin babysitting, you should establish a secret word with your family to let them know if you're in potential danger but are unable to tell them so. If you need to use it, slip it into a phone conversation. For example, if your secret word is "earrings", say "Hey Mom, do you know where my purple earrings are?" When she hears the word, she'll ask if she needs to come get you. Usually all you'll need is your parent to take you home in this situation, but it may also help to have your mom or dad present to assess whether the drunken parent poses a danger.

3. ? We can't tell you any certain right answer for this, because it is something you'll need to pray about, and perhaps seek the advice of a mentor. Consider that all of these options can still spread the Gospel. Quitting demonstrates that your convictions will not waver. Secretly telling the kids about Jesus may make you lose your job, but will definitely plant seeds. Even following orders can make you a great witness for Christ; it just challenges you to find non-verbal ways to point others to God. 4. A. A nonstop screaming baby may make you want to scream, too. Instead of letting your emotions get the best of you, make sure the baby is in a safe place, and then find a way to settle down. Once you are calm enough to make rational decisions, you can try things like feeding, changing the diaper, or putting the baby to bed. You can try gently rocking, but never shake a baby. This is considered child abuse and can cause long-term physical and mental damage.

5. B, then C. In most situations like these, a child simply decided to play a game of hide-and-seek without telling you. But that does not change the seriousness of the situation for you. Once you find the kid, explain that you were concerned about them and to not play that game when you babysit. If you can't find them after a few minutes of searching, loudly announce "I'm calling your parents!" (as one last chance to prompt them out of their hiding spot), and then follow through. If the parents aren't sure what to do, call the police. Hopefully the child didn't get kidnapped, or fall down a well, or run away, but it's best not to take chances.

That being said, here are our top ten tips.

1. Watch what you say around children. You are a role model for them and they will likely repeat the things you say. Even if you don't say "bad words", remember that saying anything that's mean, suggestive, derogatory, or otherwise inappropriate will make you a poor example.

2. You're there for the family, not to take care of your own personal desires. While it's okay to answer a phone call from Mom, don't spend the evening Snapchatting your friends.

If you watch TV, let the kids pick the show instead of you catching up on your favorite series. But most of all, play with the kids. This alone will make you stand out as a star sitter.

3. Opt for the healthiest choices in the pantry when it comes to meals and snacks. But a small sweet won't hurt.

4. Keep track of interests and hobbies of each child you babysit. Take special care to know their allergies, medical conditions, birthdays, and special parent instructions.

5. Each time you babysit, bring a special game, toy, or book that you think the child will like.

Here are some ways to get your foot in the door of the babysitting world.

-Check to see if any local community resources, such as Red Cross or the YMCA, offer babysitter training classes.

-Volunteer as a program assistant with a younger Girl Scout troop.

-Ask your parents if they can leave younger siblings with you while they run errands. (You may have to prove yourself trustworthy ahead of time by being responsible with household chores and not picking fights with family members.)

-Sign up to be a junior counselor at summer camp.

-See if you can job shadow a current babysitter. They might appreciate the extra help with large families!

Make plans in case of fire, natural disaster, choking, or power outage. Be extra prepared by taking a course on emergency response or first aid.

7. Wear appropriate clothing. This means more than just being modestly dressed, although that's also important. Wear clothes that you can move around and play in, or possibly get dirty or spit up on! Don't wear loose or dangly jewelry around babies. Think about what you wear.

8. Know the parents' rules for you and follow them. Are you allowed to take the kids outside? Can you eat anything in the fridge?

Are certain rooms off-limits? Questions like these don't make you sound like an incompetent babysitter, but rather a thorough and respectful one!

Love/Hate

Relationship Christmas. Do you have a love/hate relationship with this holiday?

Many do, especially those of us from divorced and blended families. I used to have to go to three different places every holiday. Not only was that physically draining, but often emotionally draining, too.

Unfortunately, as the kid, we rarely get much say in how all this goes down. Court visitation schedules, long distances, close distances, and sometimes parental discord can override our desires and hopes for a Merry Christmas.

We may feel that speaking up about the frustrations associated with divorced or blended families and the holidays isn't going to change anything either. But, acknowledging our feelings and addressing them head-on will have a better outcome than stuffing them, especially in situations that are out of our control.

Here's a few ideas that may help your love/hate relationship with Christmas this year: 1.

Communicate. As hard as this may seem, speaking up about how you are feeling is important. Your parents may assume your thoughts or feelings, and getting issues out on

the table can help. Write it out in a letter if you're concerned about how it will sound or how it will be received. Offer ideas that you see. If you really like Christmas dinner with dad at Aunt Betty's, because your cousins are there, maybe your mom would celebrate on Christmas Eve. 2. Have realistic expectations and be flexible.

Maybe you will only get to have Christmas Day at Aunty Betty's every other year, but if you understand why you feel like you do and you're expressing your feelings appropriately, you will be less stressed about it.

3. Don't take it personally. Court-mandated schedules, school schedules and family schedules all make it more complicated. Some of it we just can't control. It's not your fault that your family is divorced or blended; you can only do so much.

4. Talk to a trusted adult, youth pastor, teacher, or school counselor. Stuffing isn't a great idea.

Sharing your feelings will help. Ask them to pray with and for you.

5. Journal. Writing down how you feel and what you're thinking will help you sort out what is really important to you and help you with the emotions of your situation.

6. Finally, and most importantly, remember Jesus goes with you in every situation. Praying and reading the Bible will grow you spiritually and make you wiser to deal with these hard things in life. Teaming up with Jesus can make difficulties like holidays easier. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in hearts, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:29-20 Christmas doesn't have to be the holiday you hate because of divorce or family issues. It may not look like it used to, but by being proactive, it can be special just the same.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Is your friend of a divorced or blended family struggling with holiday emotions?

-Be yourself and be there for her. You’re friends for a reason. Listen, and if she isn’t ready to talk, let her know that when she is ready, you will be there.

-Be positive, and don’t minimize the situation. Keep it real, but remember how everyone’s situation is different, only your friend knows how the situation makes her feel.

-Keep advice to a minimum, unless she asks for it.

-If she is going away over Christmas break and wants someone to talk to, work out the best way you can communicate with each other… phone calls, text messages, or social media.

Depending on the situation, she may not have the same communication resources she usually has.

-Encourage her to journal about her emotions.

-Assure her that you will be here when she returns and remind your friend of the fun the two of you will have. Pray for your friend and ask if you can pray with her.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: if either of them falls down, one can help the other up. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)

Scarves, sweaters, jeans, and neutral colors are what most people retaliate to in the cold winter season. This winter, however, is transforming the typical winter uniform from dull, predictable layers into colorful, yet seasonally appropriate alternatives.

The most wearable fashion trends for this winter have the same principles of the warm, cozy layers, but with a fashion-forward twist of bright colors and patterns.

So what are the staple items to stock up on this winter season? White, black, brown, burgundy, calico floral prints on a black background, and plaid everything are the essentials to survive the winter. It’s the

accessories, however, that can make all the difference in a fashion-forward ensemble.

The accessories to add to your closet this season include: neon bracelets, statement earrings, structured and color-blocked bags, pattern tights, and felt fedoras that can easily be added to any outfit. So let’s put these tips into action. A perfect winter 2015 outfit, which is chic, and on trend would be a flared jean and a colorful chunkyknit sweater, paired with a fur vest. Accessorize your look with some statement earrings, a structured bag, and an oxford shoe to compliment the flared jean. Dare to Care About the Hair No outfit is complete without hair, makeup, and manicured nails. If you are wearing a

felt fedora or a beanie the best way to rock it is by curling your hair. The volume of the hair will help hold the fedora or beanie in place while seamlessly completing your whole look. The best way to rock a ponytail or side braid is if your outfit has a full collar, like a cowlneck or ruffles, or if you really want to show off your statement necklace. If you are considering taking your winter hair one step farther, consider dyeing your hair for the chilly season with an ombre or a red tint to warm up your look.

For instance, start off with a black pair of jeans that have patches, zippers, stitching, or quilting that makes it stand out. Then, cuff up the legs twice to add some interest. Add any black sweater, preferably with a cowlneck, and layer a long black blazer or a black leather jacket. When it comes to accessories, you have one of two options.

Either add a dash of red in the bag or earrings, or keep it all black with bold statement earrings and a long silver or gold necklace.

Want to still incorporate your fall items for the winter? No problem! A common staple item that almost everyone owns is a jean button-up shirt. Button the shirt all the way up to the neck and add a short statement necklace.

Cuff up the sleeves and add a plaid duster, which is essentially a long coat or cardigan. Finish it off with your favorite black jeans and boots, and you have officially updated last season’s wardrobe.

Wind it Down for Winter Bronzer, blush, eyeliner, foundation, all are made to enhance your natural features, not cover it up!

a shade lighter since your summer tan is mostly faded at this point. Bronzer should be lightly applied under your cheekbones and the sides of your nose. Add a dab of blush on your cheekbones to achieve that slight windblown rosy effect. Finally, apply very thin eyeliner and mascara and you are ready to face the world!

Nails that Never Fail “Nails are the period at the end of the sentence. They complete the look.” Prabal Gurung knew what every girl should be aware of, polished nails equals a polished look. For this winter season try a few different options for Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or to glam up your everyday. If you are a low-maintenance gal, apply a coat of burgundy, black, silver, or white nail polish with a clear top-coat and you are ready to go out the door polished and perfect. If you are more of an artist, however, the most common winter design you can try to master is a snowflake. Start by painting

your nail completely blue, black, or even red. Take a toothpick or any slender nail tool and paint a snowflake using white or silver on top. Before you know it, you’ll have ready to go winter nails to ring in the New Year. Not an artist, but still want to have perfectly manicured nails? Try stick-on nail designs available at any drug store. Just make sure you look at the size of the nail stick-ons AND PLEASE DON’T USE GLUE on your beautiful nails! Take your time to center to the sticky on your nail and then you’ll have a complete polished look that will last for weeks!

Fun Fashion Tips From Comfy to Classic

By Jennifer M. Smith Can you imagine being the owner of a successful online company—before you’ve even graduated from high school?

Over six years ago, when Dainty Jewell’s CEO and designer Charity Jewell Walter was only sixteen, she had the idea to upcycle and embellish clothing items to sell to friends and family. Determined to reflect Christ in her lifestyle, Charity eventually began creating original designs that were both modest and fashionable, and Dainty Jewell’s was born.

Dainty Jewell’s has since expanded as both a modest clothing company and a ministry for women. We recently even had the pleasure of working with Michael Bates (now Michael Keilen!) of “Bringing up Bates” to provide bridesmaid dresses for her wedding. It was exciting for Charity—and the whole Dainty Jewell’s team—to see photos on popular news websites of Michael’s wedding with her bridesmaids wearing our dresses!

While having an untucked shirt can look slouchy, tucking it in on one side gives off a relaxed vibe without looking too undone. It defines your waist and is still very comfortable.”

In this outfit, I wore cheetah-print heels with a plaid blanket scarf. Cheetah is like a neutral: you can wear so many different patterns with it and still look great!

Remember, a fashion upgrade to a “blah” kind of outfit can upgrade a “blah” kind of mood. When it comes to fashion, you are the designer, and you make the rules!”

5. Add 1T coconut oil or butter.

6. Add ½t baking powder.

7. Mix all ingredients well then add either ¼c berries or 1T of water.

8. If using only water, microwave for only 40 seconds. The muffin should still be gooey in the center when you take it out. If using berries, you’ll need about a minute.

Oven versions should take between 8-12 minutes. Take out of oven before top of muffin is completely set.

Yes, Marjorie Jackson, fifteen years old at the time of publication, leads readers through the action, crime, and romance found in the Bible.

She shares creative retellings of scripture done as interviews, letters, and diaries. Many people miss the excitement of the Bible among the old-fashioned language and long lists of genealogy. But after reading the passages from this book, I’m excited to read more of the Bible with this new perspective!

Fun Facts from This Issue Behind the Scenes

Jessica’s 92-Day Mediterranean Trek included seven countries and nearly twenty cities, one of which was Pisa, Italy. Did you know the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa is a church bell tower? The church’s baptistery building leans too!

We met up with the Silver Ring Thing team as they were preparing for an evening event. These two took a break to be interviewed by us. Our recording devices kept malfunctioning, so we ended up filming on three different cameras!
