Letter from Rolinda
Throughout this edition you will see the fun, educational events offered to Girl Scouts and learn how you may be involved in Girl Scouting.

Our Council Centennial kicked off with Festival of Giving where 145 acts of service were completed during November by 1,565 Girl Scout individual, troop and service unit participants. We continued with local proclamations by the cities of Augusta, Emporia, Garden City, Salina and Wichita; Sedgwick County; then wrapped up with the State of Kansas proclamation on January 31 marking our official 100th year. During our centennial year, we will open the doors of the newly constructed Heartland Activity Center at Starwoods Girl Scout Center. This building will provide program and troop activity space and will serve as our product distribution site for the Wichita-area.
Throughout the year, we aspire to welcome 100 Daisy Circle members. Daisy Circle is a group of dedicated monthly donors to Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. The on-going financial donations are critical to support our girls through membership financial assistance, programming, customer support, technology and needed updates to our aging camps, little houses and office properties.
For the girls,

Rolinda Sample, CEO

Gold Award Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good.
Gold Award Girl Scouts
2024 Class

Lillian McLaughlin
The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change.
As an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, Lillian wanted her Gold Award project to focus on helping her peers that identify as LGBTQ+. This knowledge led Lillian to create the mural “You are Not Alone” on the side of Hao Auto Repair near Wichita East High School in Wichita. Lillian’s mural was created with the help of more than 80 volunteers, ages 5-85 years old. In the mural, there is a QR Code that viewers can scan which leads them to a webpage housed by Reverie Roasters that has resources for LGBTQ+ teens including mental health crisis information, local organizations, medical information and more.
Alyssa Church
Knowing how important grade school education is for the development of youth, Alyssa focused her Gold Award project on helping this generation of students. Understanding that not everyone has equal access to educational materials and school supplies, Alyssa created Homework Buddy Bags. She collected used backpacks, canvas totes and school supplies and purchased new supplies and received donations from multiple places. Alyssa then created 100 bags filled with supplies. Alyssa also created a donation program at the schools so supplies can continue to be gathered for future bags and her project and legacy can continue.

Trinadee Fetters
Trinadee’s Gold Award project addressed food insecurity and equal access to quality food, especially meat. In Council Grove, the Morris County Care & Share allows patrons access to quality ingredients they normally would not be able to get, but Trinadee noticed there was no meat at the food bank. Trinadee purchased a large freezer to donate to the Care & Share so they could stock it with meat. She worked with local farmers and butchers to find donors who would help sustain the freezer with meat including beef, pork, chicken, sheep and goat. Trinadee educated families about the nutrients provided in meat, gave recipes on how to cook the meat and held tutorials where viewers could watch her cook the food and learn for themselves.

Keeley Ropp
Mallory Miller
Keeley's passion for helping others culminated in teaching sewing skills in a way that also raised awareness of the issue of hunger in the Wichita community. Keeley created a YouTube tutorial and hosted sewing classes to teach the community to create bowl cozies which can be used at local food banks and shelters. Keeley's curriculum will be used annually in North High School's sewing class.
Savannah Athy-Sedbrook
Addressing the stigma around mental health disorders and helping to connect others with the resources they need was the focus of Mallory’s Gold Award project. Over the years, Mallory noticed that many people struggled with mental health issues, but didn’t have the resources they needed to get help. Mallory created a presentation and binders with information on how to identify mental health issues, actions to take to help those in crisis, training on harm reduction and resources on facilities and organizations that can help. She hosted two workshops and numerous presentations where she taught attendees how to help those going through a mental health crisis.
Anastasia Corl
Savannah's Gold Award focused on her passion for the environment and educating others about greenhouse gases. By creating a mini-series on YouTube, she shared the information with community members as well as third grade students at Robinson Middle School. Savannah also created tree sculptures from recycled materials that has a QR Code on them linking to the educational videos. She then distributed the trees to her friends and family, and they even went overseas so the education can continue worldwide.
Myria Connet
As a member of the Wichita East High School Lion Dance team, Myria wanted her Gold Award to revolve around education about the history and culture of the Lion Dance. Myria created a website which houses information on the history behind the Chinese Lion Dance, educational lessons, and videos of the teams performances. She also held multiple practices, lessons, and performances so she could not only educate about the dance, but show how it is done as well.
Anastasia knew she wanted to help her community through her Gold Award project. She saw how invasive plants were taking over the park near her home and extreme overgrowth was keeping pollinators away from the area. Anastasia started by gutting the garden and removing all of the invasive, dead and overgrown plants. She then planted over 200 different kinds of native, perennial Kansas plants. By choosing native plants that are also perennials, she was able to ensure that the garden would be hearty and self-sustaining. Anastasia built a bee habitat box and added honeybees to the box so they could begin pollinating the area and furthering the ecosystem. Along with the honeybees, the garden started to attract other pollinators as well, furthering her to the goal of continued pollination.
Savannah Thompkins
Savannah’s Gold Award project focused on educating children and young campers on the dangers and prevention of melanoma. After seeing a close family member be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer, Savannah wanted to alert others about the dangers of it and how to prevent melanoma. Savannah’s project was two-fold; creating a sustainable resource where children and campers could easily obtain sunscreen and educating them on the dangers of melanoma and why it’s important to wear sunscreen. She installed a box at Starwoods Girl Scout Center which is stocked with bottles of sunscreen for campers to take if needed. She also reached out to six other facilities including other local camps to share information she had created to educate children about the risks of skin cancer and the importance of applying sunscreen.

Heartland Activity Center

The Starwoods Girl Scout Center is home to the newly constructed, Heartland Activity Center. This new utilitarian building represents the largest construction investment in recent years for the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Council, for which it’s named.
Beginning this summer, the multipurpose Heartland Activity Center will welcome campers from across the council’s 80- county area and will host multiple program events throughout the year. It will serve as a Product Program distribution hub and inventory cupboard.
The 4,800 square foot building features an 800 square foot covered entrance and 4,000 square feet enclosed area which will serve as program space and is equipped with large overhead doors that allow for drive-thru service to pick up product inventory. It also includes an office and a restroom. A RV hookup has been added near the adjacent picnic pavilion.
The construction of the Heartland Activity Center was made possible by generous donors coupled with the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Council’s investment. The design by Greyten Architecture & Interior Design, and lead gift by Dee Rolph, along with generous support by The Fidelity Bank Foundation, INTRUST Bank, and numerous foundations brought the vision of the Heartland Activity Center to fruition. A full donor list is on the following page. The addition of this building enhances the appeal and productivity of member activities and will serve as a wonderful compliment to the Starwoods Girl Scout Center property for years to come.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be hosted upon the completion of the building late this spring. Details will be provided as they are confirmed.

Thank you, donors!

Registration & Program Credits

Early registration for council-hosted summer programs opens February 24 and closes April 14 with a $25 deposit per session, with some exciting news and big changes to the registration process. We are launching a new event registration platform that combines two current platforms into one.

While Ultracamp has been our go-to resource for event registration since 2007, we will retire this platform in May as we transition to our new event registration platform: Campwise. Our current camper health record platform, CampDoc, will also be retired with these features moving to Campwise.
Campwise benefits for parents include:
⏵ Intuitive platform that works seamlessly on computer and mobile.
⏵ Reduce frequency of authorization and health forms (answer once per year per participant)
⏵ Choose if and when to utilize Program Credits as payment for events.
⏵ Visibility to your camper's Camp Store purchases and ongoing balance.
Find the link to the Campwise registration system on the Camp FAQ website (scan the QR code at the top of this page) and log in. In most cases, your user name to Campwise is the same email you use for other Girl Scout systems.
Events that are currently open for registration in Ultracamp will remain there until the event takes place. Program Credits are available to use for spring program registration in Ultracamp until April 1, when they will be temporarily unavailable for the transition to Campwise. Both existing and newly earned Program Credits will be in Campwise beginning April 15.

Campers who register for multiple council-hosted camp sessions will receive a $10 discount on each additional session.
Be one of the first 200 girls (youth only) to register for camp and receive a fun bonus bag filled with all kinds of fun goodies!
Program Types
Youth members only: Just like it sounds, these events are for registered Girl Scouts only.
Volunteers only: These training events are designed for Troop Leaders and other volunteers.
Youth Members with chaperones: Each Girl Scout must have a chaperone in attendance— this can be a volunteer, parent, or guardian.
Girl Scout family event: Event is open to family and friends of the Girl Scout member. All youth must be chaperoned.
Public event:
Open to everyone!
Refund Policy
You may cancel your reservation for an event or summer camp and receive a full refund, minus any deposit, if the request is received more than 14 days prior to the start of the session. Limited refunds will be given within 14 days of the program; see full refund policy on our website and attached to your Campwise confirmation email for specific refund scenarios. No refund is given if the camper is a no show or leaves a session early. Additionally, t-shirt or other optional purchases will not be refunded and travel may have an earlier refund date.

T-shirts
All youth who register for any of the 22 council-hosted Girl Scout camps by May 1st will receive a camp t-shirt included in the price of camp; one per camper per summer! An additional color t-shirt with camp design

Streamline the check-in process by adding funds to your Camp Store balance during registration! Cash will also be accepted at check-in for sleepaway sessions and at Sunday’s check-in for day camp. Refunds of unspent trading post money will be applied to Campwise as Program Credits in August.

Financial Assistance
We never want finances to get in the way of having an amazing Girl Scout summer!
Camperships are available! Scan the QR code to access the application. If you will travel more than 125 miles to attend a camp session, you may request funds through the campership program to assist with fuel costs.
