Dear Parents and Guardians, Why send my daughter to camp? Is that the question you are asking yourself? Camping gives your daughter the experience of living outdoors, making new friends, the freedom to explore the world around her, sing at the top of her lungs, create art, and discover more about who she is. It also gives her the opportunity to be more independent as she takes care of her belongings and herself with the encouragement of our compassionate, dedicated camp staff. Girls develop their leadership skills as they make decisions that affect the entire group. Camp is an active/doing place. The emphasis is on “doing” and “learning.” For some girls, success is discovering that they can be away from home without mom or dad. For others, it’s hitting the target at the archery range. Are you ready to let your daughter “spread her wings”? Your help in preparing your daughter for camp will ensure she has a summer she’ll remember forever.

No need to be in a troop to participate.
Spend some time flipping the pages of this guide to check out all we offer. We have half-day programs, overnights, week-long programs and multiple-week programs. So many choices! You might need to sign up for several sessions if you can’t make up your mind. & bring a friend Interested in attending camp, but no one from your troop wants to go with you? Introduce a friend who is not a Girl Scout to the fun girls have at camp! Together you can explore the outdoors, learn new skills and meet lots of new people. Sign up as buddies (must be same age and in same program) and have a great summer adventure. Additional $15 registration fee for non-Girl Scout friends will be automatically charged when registering. Remember that camp is a great place to come by yourself, too. You’ll make lots of new friends while you’re there!

one-stop guide
for parents/guardians Please read carefully, information changes from year to year.
general information General Information Girl Scout summer camp is open to ALL girls entering 1st - 12th grade regardless of race, color, nationality or socioeconomic factors. Grades listed for each program refer to the grade the camper will be entering in the fall. Membership Girl Scout membership is required to participate. Non-members must add the $15 membership fee to the registration fee to cover membership through Sept. 30, 2014. Girl Scouts of the USA provides basic accident insurance coverage for all registered Girl Scouts as a supplement to the family’s existing insurance coverage. Friends/Buddies Girls attend camp individually, not as a troop, though they may choose to attend with one friend/buddy. Every attempt is made to place them in the same unit, but is not guaranteed. Units are generally made up of girls who are in the same level of Girl Scouting, so friends who vary greatly in age are not likely to be placed together. Girls with Special Needs We are committed to accommodating girls with special needs. Our goal is to provide a positive camp experience for all girls. Parents/guardians of girls with special needs should contact Peggy Brothers (pbrothers@girlscoutsgcnwi.org) so the best placement can be made.

Proper Behavior Required Camp life is an excellent opportunity for girls to live, work and play together. It is a community of many people, and we expect everyone to behave appropriately. The camp director and staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, GSGCNWI reserves the right to send any girl home from camp who constantly misbehaves, who willfully disobeys camp rules, or whose behaviors towards others (campers or staff) is unacceptable. There is no refund in these cases. 6
Camp Staff and Leadership Members of our camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, fun-loving and caring individuals. They are selected based on their experience, ability to serve as role models and their genuine desire to work with children. Our staff is committed to creating a caring and supportive environment that respects each girl as an individual. Staff candidates are recruited from colleges and universities, local community agencies and referrals. At our day camps, volunteers and seasonal staff provide the leadership. Individuals must be at least 18 years old and complete a thorough application process which includes a background check. The health and safety of our campers is always the first priority of the staff. Staff training prior to camp includes supervising and caring for campers, activity programming, first aid and CPR, team building, and much more. Staff members who supervise high-adventure activities are required to have additional training and qualifications. Staff are all registered members of Girl Scouts. Positions Available Each summer we seek highly motivated and talented people to join our staff. Those interested in a job at camp should visit our website, www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org, for more information. Positions are perfect for students earning degrees in recreation, education, early childhood development, sports management, psychology, social work, nursing, and environmental studies. Positions in food service and health management are also available. Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
costs and financial assistance Fees Fees are deposited when the registration is processed. Please do not postdate checks. There will be a $25 service charge for checks returned due to insufficient funds. Financial Assistance Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is committed to ensuring that all girls have the opportunity to participate in Girl Scouts. Financial assistance is offered to help meet the needs of those members whose family would financially be unable to participate in approved Girl Scout activities. • A person must be a registered member to receive financial assistance. • All Girl Scout funds must be used for the greatest good of the largest number of members. • Funds are limited; aid is based on financial need. • Financial assistance is determined on the basis of need, not merit. • Financial assistance is not designed to underwrite event costs. • All requests and allocations are confidential. Eligible Expenses • Summer camp program fees Requirements for Requests • Applicant is a registered member of Girl Scouts. • Applicant is unable to participate without financial assistance. • Applicant would benefit from the requested experience. • Funds will be used for the purposes requested. • Each camper may request financial assistance for one session of day camp or one session of resident camp.
How to Apply A Girl Scout Financial Assistance Application is available online at www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org and on page 59 of this guide. 1. Each applicant must apply individually. 2. Forms must be completed and submitted to the Lisle Gathering Place before processing can take place. Incomplete paperwork will cause a delay in processing the request. 3. Approved financial assistance will be sent to the program on behalf of the applicant. Mail completed form to: Girl Scouts Attn: Summer Camp Financial Assistance 2400 Ogden Avenue, Suite 400, Lisle, IL 60532 or fax the form to 630-544-5999. Cancellations/Refunds • A full refund is given if a camper cannot be placed in a program or if it is necessary for the council to cancel the program. • A full refund, minus a processing fee ($20 for day camp, $40 for one-week resident camp programs or $100 for two-week resident camp programs) will be given if the request is made in writing at least three weeks prior to the start of the selected session, or if the cancellation was due to illness or injury and a physician’s note is provided. • No refunds will be made for campers who arrive late, leave early, attend only part of a program, fail to show up or for those who are asked to leave because of behavior issues. • Girl and adult membership registration is non-refundable. • Refund requests must be submitted in writing to Girl Scouts, Attn: Summer Camp Refund, 2400 Ogden Ave., Suite 400, Lisle, IL 605323933. Requests must be made no later than Aug. 30, 2014.

Our Girl Scout Cookie® program is an amazing way for girls to support their Girl Scout year with a plan, fund those personalized plans with their proceeds and learn new financial literacy and customer service skills. Troops can use cookie proceeds to help pay for camp. The Girl Scout Cookie program is a fantastic way to fund a camp experience! get to know our camps Once you have decided whether day camp, resident or both are the best fit, it’s time to take a look at the locations of our camps. Have you ever visited one or more of our beautiful camp properties? The following pages include overviews of each of our properties that support the summer camp experiences. Whether you’re thinking about sending your daughter to camp, wondering which camp to take your troop to or just want to see what our properties have to offer our OPEN HOUSES are something you don’t want to miss. Take a tour of the camp, talk to the summer camp director and visit with the property manager to see what improvements we’ve made! Experience some of the recreation offerings at each camp, opportunities may include a hayride, volleyball, games, and a round of mini golf or take aim trying archery. (Based on individual camp offerings) No need to register. We’ll be waiting to see you! Grab the family, pack a picnic and enjoy your day in the outdoors!

Camp Crew Weekends
Have fun and make a difference at our camps. Do you love camp? So do our property managers and they need YOU! Our camp crew weekends offer the opportunity to volunteer getting our camps ready for changing seasons. It’s also a time to make new friends. Based on seasonal needs, projects may include campsite maintenance, putting up or taking down platform tents, and trail improvements. No experience required; hands-on instruction is provided as needed. Girls 5th grade and older, parents, and adult individuals are welcome. If you have a specific skill to share (electrical, plumbing, carpentry), please e-mail us at camper@girlscoutsgcnwi.org. Your contributions are visible and valued!

Step 2: Select a Location
Camp Greene Wood is a 136-acre wooded property in Woodridge, IL. There are hiking trails, cabins, fields for games, an archery range and platform tents. Day camp programs at Camp Greene Wood allow girls to explore the outdoors and develop skills in a safe and fun environment. A wide variety of programs provide opportunities for girls to choose activities best suited for their age and interests. The camper day at Greene Wood is from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Campers going into grade 4 and up may choose to participate in an overnight experience on Thursday. Campers bring a sack lunch to camp, except when there is a cookout. Meals during the overnight are provided.

Camp Palos is located near Palos Park, IL. There are 80 acres of wooded areas and open fields with a stream running through the camp. Campers will find lots to do when hiking the trails, overnighting in one of four cabin sites or sleeping in the platform tents. The program at Camp Palos includes lots of opportunities to build outdoor skills, explore the camp and make new friends. Girl planning ensures that no two weeks are exactly the same. The camper day at Palos is from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Campers going into grade 4 and up may choose to participate in an overnight experience on Thursday. Campers bring a sack lunch to camp, except when there is a cookout. Meals during the overnight are provided.

resident camp Camp Butternut Springs is located just outside of Valparaiso, Indiana. It’s close enough to lots of highways to make it easy to get to from just about anywhere in the Chicago region. The camp has an archery range, swimming pool, and shower house, a pond for boating, athletic fields and hiking trails. You’ll eat most meals in the dining hall but will have the chance to cook over a campfire at least once. If you’re in grades 1 – 11 right now, we’ve got a spot just for you! Live in a platform tent with other girls your age. Your counselors will be nearby in their own tent. Your living area will include a building that has toilets and sinks in it. There are showers at the pool. Arrivals: Dismissals:
Sunday, 1:30 – 3 p.m. Half-week: Wednesday, 1:30 - 3 p.m. Friday evening closing ceremony, 7 p.m. (families invited to attend)

resident camp Camp Juniper Knoll is located just north of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Swim at our private beach on Pleasant Lake, hike the trails, learn archery and play games in the meadow. Work on craft projects and make lots of new friends. If you’re in grades 1 – 11 right now, Camp Juniper Knoll has just the adventure for you! Learn beginning horseback riding, canoe the Wisconsin River, head to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness or put on a play. Whatever your interest, Juniper Knoll has a program for you! Live in a platform tent or yurt with girls your age; your counselors will be nearby in their own yurt or tent. Modern restroom facilities are in each unit, and a shower house is available for everyone. Meals will be provided in the dining hall, and you will have the opportunity to cook over a campfire. Arrivals: Sunday, 1:30 – 3 p.m. Half-week: Wednesday, 1:30 - 3 p.m. Dismissals: Half-week: Tuesday closing ceremony 7 p.m. Friday evening closing ceremony 7 p.m. (families invited to attend)

Step 2: Select a Location
resident camp Camp Pokanoka is located outside of Ottawa, Illinois, on the banks of the Illinois River. There are trails to hike, a creek to walk along, a pool, shower house and a gazebo for stargazing. Spend time doing archery or playing games on the fields. If you’re in grades 1 – 11 right now, Camp Pokanoka is the perfect place for your summer adventure! Live in a platform tent or an open-air cabin (we call them tabins) if you’re in grades 6 – 12; whether you stay in a platform tent or tabin depends on what week you’re at camp. If you’re in grades 2 – 5, you’ll live in a tabin. You’ll stay with other girls your age; your counselors will be nearby in their own tent or tabin. Swim, play games, cook out, work on craft projects and make lots of new friends! Arrivals: Sunday 1:30 – 3 p.m. Mid-week half week programs, Wednesday 1:30 – 3 p.m. Dismissals: Friday evening closing ceremony 7 p.m., depart by 7:30 p.m. Half-week closing ceremony: Tuesday, 7 p.m. (families invited to attend)

Whether you have gone to day camp for years or are coming for the first time, we can’t wait to see you. We are counting down the days until summer! We offer day camp at several sites throughout the council. Look for one that is close to you, or try something new. Day camp runs from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Monday – Friday at the following sites: Camp Greene Wood, Woodridge, IL Camp Palos, Palos Park, IL Everyone at camp gets to play games outdoors, work on craft projects, sing songs, and make lots of new friends! Girls who are in 4th grade, or older, will have the option of having an overnight at camp. How do you know if you are ready to overnight? Check out our quiz on page 4. Then have a chat with your family to select the program that fits you best. Like more than one session? That’s great. You can sign up for as many sessions as you like, with the okay from your parents, of course.

The full-day program at Camp Greene Wood provides campers the opportunity to explore nature, work on crafts, play games, and sing lots of songs. An optional overnight is included for girls in grades 4-12.
Camp Palos
The full-day program at Camp Palos will allow you to experience all that camp has to offer: songs, games, crafts, nature activities, cooking in the outdoors and an optional overnight experience for girls entering 4th grade and above.

Girl Scout Brownies
These programs are designed for the first-time Girl Scout Brownie camper. All groups may choose to participate in songs, games, crafts, nature activities and a cookout during their camp week. Campers and staff work together to make the camp week a fun and positive experience for everyone. The June 23-27 camp session is an extended camp day with an additional fee of $20.

New teen mentoring awards reflect changes by Girl Scouts of the USA in the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Option 1: Girls who have successfully completed Program Aide Training in a previous year may choose to take an overnight training in the spring. This training will include everything they need to know that was not previously included in the PAT unit. Option 2: Girls who have not completed Program Aide Training or are unable to attend a CIT I Training Weekend will need to register for one of the CIT I Training weeks during regular day camp sessions. NEW: Teen Mentoring Leadership Opportunities The new teen mentoring awards from Girl Scouts of the USA reflect the changes in the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Dates: June 23 – 26, 2014 Location: Gebhard Woods State Park, Morris, IL Times have changed from the cave to the modern place of today. Girls will have great opportunities to try things from the past in the woodsy Gebhard State Park. Spend a day at the Morris Pool. Come join the fun!
Volunteer- led Day Camp Overview Volunteer-led day camps are community-based summer camp endeavors undertaken by talented and enthusiastic volunteers who have organized a camping experience for Girl Scouts. Each day camp has a unique theme and specialized activities; many volunteer-led day camps feature teen mentoring opportunities for older girls and an overnight for interested campers. These camps utilize a variety of sites for their programming, including state and county parks, forest preserves and Girl Scout camps. All volunteer-led day camps are supported by council staff to ensure they meet numerous standards regarding program, budgeting, risk management, and health and safety. Registration is handled by each day camp or you may register online. Volunteer-led day camps rely on adult volunteers to participate in all aspects of the camp program. Without you, these camps are unable to serve the girls in the community. Please contact the volunteer team leading the camp in your community about options and opportunities. A safari is a journey or trip. At Camp Safari we will be traveling around Butternut Springs to learn about different areas of the world and camp. One day we will be in Australia and the next tramping through deepest Africa. Along the way we will be meeting animals native to these areas, tasting foods, playing games, and learning to speak some words from these countries. There will also be the usual camp activities like cooking your own lunch, crafts, and swimming. Juniors and up will be doing archery. We will also be doing a campwide lashing project. campresident butternut springs camp Camp Butternut Springs is located just outside of Valparaiso, Indiana. It’s close enough to lots of highways to make it easy to get to from just about anywhere in the Chicago region, and is especially convenient for our members in Indiana. The camp has an archery range, swimming pool, and shower house, a pond for boating, athletic fields and hiking trails. The challenge course is a low-element teambuilding experience where girls learn to work together solving problems and making decisions. You’ll eat most meals in the dining hall, but you’ll also have the chance to cook over a campfire at least once.

Camp Juniper Knoll is located just north of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Swim at our private beach on Pleasant Lake, hike the trails, learn archery and play games in the meadow. Work on craft projects and make lots of new friends. If you’re in grades 1 – 11 right now, Camp Juniper Knoll has just the adventure you’re looking for this summer. Experience off-site beginner horseback riding, canoe the Wisconsin River, head to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness or put on a play. Whatever your interests are, Juniper Knoll has a program for you! Live in a platform tent or yurt with girls your age; your counselors will be nearby in their own yurt or tent. Modern restroom facilities are in each unit, and a shower house is available for everyone. Camp Pokanoka is located outside of Ottawa, Illinois, on the banks of the Illinois River. There are trails to hike, a creek to walk along, a pool, shower house and a gazebo for stargazing. Our trip wouldn’t be complete without stopping at Journey World to film and edit highlights of your experience by creating, directing, and producing your own music video. Paddle and Swim
Enjoy the pool on Friday evening as we complete the swim test. Then on Saturday head out to Silver Springs Lake to learn and practice canoe skills. Day Camp: A Time for Adventure Summer day camp includes fun-filled days with activities that open up new worlds, provide new opportunities to build confidence and just be a girl. Girls discover they can do things for themselves like cook something over a fire with their newly found cooking skills … connect with the outdoors when they hike a trail or see a deer along the way ... and make memories that they will have the rest of their lives. Girls will find a variety of program options that will pique their interests during their time at day camp. Each program has a special focus where girls can explore an area a bit more in depth. They still have a chance to do all the regular camp favorites like arts & crafts, hiking, and tie dying. Girls in each unit have a chance to offer their own ideas to customize the unit’s program for the week. This means that a program’s content may change from week to week. Some requirements for Girl Scout journeys or badges may be met during the week. Girl Scout day camp programs are the best value in the area. Her camp fee covers: • Five days of programming that will keep her busy, challenged, and meeting new friends. • Staffing by a comprehensive camp staff that includes a health supervisor, program staff and camp counselors. • Food for her group’s cook out. • NOTE: Transportation to camp via chartered bus is EXTRA.
Health and Safety Safety is a part of everything we do from always walking with a buddy to practicing emergency procedures. We follow Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. standards and that of the American Camp Association. Our camps are also licensed by the state and follow all state and federal codes for site, food service, health and safety, staffing, program design and management. Every girl must have a HEALTH HISTORY to participate in day camp. It is REQUIRED. A girl’s registration will not be considered complete until her health history is submitted.

List any severe allergies or other important health information. The health supervisor will contact parents of campers with serious or life-threatening allergies to complete an Allergy Action Plan. Buildings or shelters are available in the event of severe weather. All safety procedures are reviewed with campers on the first day of camp.
Unit Size Programs are divided into groups called units. Average unit size is based on the program level. At least two adults supervise each unit’s program. Units have their own outdoor unit site to call home for the week. Activities throughout the day or week will take them all over camp. 50

Half-Week, Full-Week and Longer Sessions Available!
Half-week programs are available for all ages, even Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. These programs are scheduled early in the season to allow girls the chance to try camp and attend again later in the summer. The theme of the week covers a majority of the activities. Other activities include swimming, playing games, cookouts and crafts. Girl Scout resident camp programs are for all girls and are a terrific value. Her camp fee covers: • Lodging for six days and five nights at camp; • A wide variety of camp programming, supervised by our trained staff; • Staffing that includes camp counselors, a health supervisor, waterfront staff, program staff, and our camp director; • Meals prepared by our food service staff, featuring fresh fruits and vegetables; accommodations can be made for girls with special diets, with advance notice!
Resident camp program includes activites from the program’s theme, swimming, playing games, outdoor skills, nature and crafts. Together with other girls, they will choose from a variety of camp favorites to add to their camp experience
Arrivals and Departure
Check in is from 1:30 – 3 p.m. Sunday (Wednesday for some half-week sessions). Please do not arrive before 1:15 p.m. as camp staff members will be doing final preparation for camper arrivals. Check out is on Friday evening (Tuesday for some half-week sessions). A closing ceremony that parents are welcome to attend begins at 7 p.m., with camper dismissal about 7:30 p.m. Please do not plan on arriving earlier than 6:45 p.m. We recognize that you are excited about seeing your daughter, and that she will be looking forward to seeing you. However, girls are expected to remain with their units until dismissal so we ask that you do not approach them until that time. There are designated areas for parents to wait for the closing ceremony to begin. Upon dismissal a photo ID will be required to ensure that we are releasing girls safely into the care of their parents/ guardians.

Health Screening at Camp:
Upon arrival at camp, all girls will receive a health screening by trained staff. Health screening includes having her temperature taken, feet checked, scalp checked for lice and an overall scan for apparent illness or injury.
Health and Safety Information Each camp has established emergency procedures in consultation with local law enforcement and emergency services. As part of camper orientation on the first day of camp, campers learn about these procedures and have drills that are used during the camp session for practice. Our camps all follow standards set forth by Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camp Association. Our Girl Scout camps offering summer camp programming are licensed by the state, and uphold state and federal codes for health, safety, site food service, management, human resources, program design, and activities. Prior to attending camp, campers must turn in a completed health history form that includes a physical examination. • This physical examination by a physician must be completed within 24 months of attending camp. • The form will be included in the camp information packet. This packet will be accessible via a link on your payment receipt, if you register online, otherwise it will be mailed to you. • The completed and signed health examination must be returned by May 1, 2014.

We do not keep health forms from year to year. We recommend that you keep a copy for your records for future use.

If head lice are found, your camper will not be allowed to stay at camp. You may treat your camper and all of her belongings and return to camp to be re-checked. Our camps have a “no nit” policy. This is for the health and safety of all campers and staff. NOTE: Campers with lice will not be admitted to camp until treated and there is no sign of nits. During camp, you will be contacted if the health supervisor determines that your camper requires health care services outside of what is available at camp.
We Love to Celebrate! Girls celebrating a 5- or 10-year resident camp milestone will be recognized during the closing ceremony of their session. Join us as we celebrate these young women who have contributed to our camp communities over the years. We count only years at Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana and legacy council resident camps. All of our resident camp programs give families the option of paying a deposit to hold your camper’s space or paying the fee in full. Deposit rates are as follows: Three- to six-day sessions: $40 per camper More than six days: $100 Deposits are non-refundable and must be made when you register your daughter for camp.
Fee Payment Encourage Girls to Spread the Word About How Much They Love Camp! Does your daughter love Girl Scout resident camp? If she tells her friends, your camper will receive a special patch! Girls who have attended resident camp for at least one year, and recruit two friends who sign up and attend resident camp, will be recognized at the closing ceremony of their session. Friends do not need to attend camp together and do not need to be in the same grade level. Friends who are recruited must be girls that have not attended Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana resident camps previously. Girls must recruit two new campers to receive the patch. Send an e-mail with your daughter’s name and the names of the 2 new campers that she has recruited for her recruiter patch by June 1, 2014, to camper@girlscoutsgcnwi.org.

Get Registered! Day Camp: Go to www.register.girlscoutsgcnwi.org and use the program code for each session for which you wish to register. Resident Camp: Go to www.girlscoutco-op.org/. Codes are not necessary for registering for resident camp. Volunteer-led: Registration for volunteer-led day camps are handled by the volunteers directing the camps. Deadline for applications moved to May 1, 2014 Make a special visit to Sangam, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) World Centre in India, where you’ll spend over a week participating in Girl Scout and Girl Guide programs. Sangam, which means “coming together” in Sanskrit, will provide community service opportunities and the chance to learn more about the Indian culture. If the group decides to spend additional time in Mumbai, girls will get the chance to visit the beautiful and historic sites the city has to offer. Before the trip, girls will get the chance to decide what sites interest them most – is it the Elephanta Caves? Or maybe a sunset trip to the beach complete with the delicious street food that India is famous for? Take a ferry, visit various neighborhoods or see the Gateway to India – it’s your choice!
