A bursa can become inflamed from injury, or due to an underlying rheumatic condition. It is an inflamed bursal sac. A bursal sac is a sac filled with fluid that acts to lubricate and reduce the friction between two surfaces in the body, usually muscles and tendons as they glide over bony prominences, however their purpose in not limited to just muscles and tendons. The symptoms of bursitis are directly related to the degree of inflammation present in the bursa. The inflamed bursa can cause localized pain and tenderness. If the bursa is so inflamed that swelling occurs, it can cause local swelling and stiffness, sometimes associated with local redness and warmth. The inflammation can make it painful to support body pressure. For example hip bursitis can make it difficult to lay on the affected side of the hip. Bursitis of the knee, can make it painful to lay with the knees touching each other. Bursitis of the hip: There are two major bursae of the hip, the trochanteric (front of the hip) bursa and the ischial (side of the hip) bursa. Inflammation of either can be associated with stiffness and pain around the hip joint. It is separated significantly from the actual hip joint by tissue and bone. Most commonly, bursitis is caused by inflammation resulting from local soft tissue trauma or a strain injury. Bursitis of the knee: The knee joint is surrounded by major bursae at the tip of the knee and over the kneecap bone, is the prepatellar bursa. This bursa can become inflamed (prepatellar bursitis) from direct trauma to the front of the knee. It can lead to varying degrees of swelling, warmth, tenderness, and redness in the overlying area of the knee. As compared with knee joint inflammation, it is usually only mildly painful. It is usually associated with significant pain when kneeling and can cause stiffness and pain with walking. Prepatellar bursitis can occur when the bursa fills with blood from an injury. It can also be seen in rheumatoid arthritis and can occur from deposits of crystals. Laser treatment: Here at the Benijofar Chiropractic clinic we are able to apply the use of highly specialised lasers. The laser lights are applied to the affected area, leading to reduced inflammation, decreased pain, an increased range of movement and increased blood flow to the damaged area. Laser light also increases blood flow to the injured area promoting faster healing.
