WE HAVE all seen this popular phenomenon at golf clubs all over the World. Many golfers have been in their company. Many more have spent a considerable amount of money to have the pleasure of their company for the odd hour or two. Many have left their company wondering why they spent money with them and wasted so much time trying to do what they have told them. By now I hope you will realise I am talking about the teaching professional who takes the hardearned cash from your pocket to train you how to play golf. Instead you get someone who leans on a club for an hour and shows little or no interest in you or your golf swing until it is time to book another lesson and take your money for a service that really has not been rendered. I myself have spent a lot of time and money with these people and thought little of it as that’s what most of them have done for many years. In between I have managed to learn one or two things from them but it is now surely time for these people to offer the golfing public the level of service they deserve. Sadly over the years due to the lack of competition in the main the standard of golf coaching has not reached the heights it should have done in many instances. Please let me make myself clear at this point: there are indeed very many teaching professionals who offer great service and are incredibly knowledgeable and also offer good service to their clients. The sad thing is that there are also many offering little or no service and even less interest in the client. As I have said many times in RTN, value for money is very important in the golf industry and this must include the teaching side of golf as well as all others. Working and visiting many golf clubs over the years, I have often wondered just what coaches who lean on their clubs staring into space behind dark

glasses get out of the game… Surely there can be no enjoyment in working this way for client or coach/ professional or whatever other name you want to give these people? It’s a good time to compare coaches - there are not so many now and the good ones will be keen to get your business. Ask around and get recommendations from friends - just make sure they are not ‘club leaners’.
