day trips Expats enjoy life but cannot predict future needs
Continued from front page “But, understandably, they cannot fork out for long term care, they can only step in to offer emergency care or a bit of respite care,” she added. Carole Saunders, an English councillor at Calpe Town Hall, said “people are beside themselves with worry” over the growing numbers of people unable to cope with living on their own – often unable to cook, to wash themselves or their clothes and descending into “squalor”. “I know in one case there was a couple in their eighties who were incapable of looking after themselves anymore – they refused point blank any offer of help from social services although they were unable to feed or wash themselves any longer,” she told RTN. “They were surrounded by piles of dirty clothing yet unable to make a cup of tea. They were often wandering the streets while their home became a hovel.
PENSION “In another case, a couple lived on a pension of 900€ a month and were able to get by – until they needed care. You can get by on 900€ a month but not when you suddenly face a weekly care bill of 750€.” Carole said the situation was becoming “a very real and very depressing problem” and it was hoped to build up a network between hard working charities, various agencies and the British Consulate in Alicante in a bid to start solving the health emergency. She added: “One of the problems is when people get to the stage they need help they are too proud to admit to it. “People have to swallow their pride and admit their health is deteriorating and get help – there is help available through social services. “And you must not simply put your head in the sand and think it will never happen to you.”
Creative t-shirts in San Vicente del Raspeig IN SAN VICENTE del Raspeig this week a design workshop successfully completed a course involving twenty youngsters who were shown how to design and print t-shirts. Mayor Mariela Torregrosa explained that the students were taught to print their own t-shirt designs using two techniques utilising tracing templates to produce original images.
School canteens empty in favour of packed lunches STUDENTS ACROSS Spain are taking a packed lunch to school to save cash in the crisis but experts at the Spanish Nutrition Foundation say that school dinners provide more nourishment for growing kids. The average cost of a school meal is around 8% - 10% more than the lunchbox version leading to 1,926,887 school goers that used the school canteen in 2010 abandoning the dining room for a sandwich lunch. Nutrition experts agree that the packed lunch alternative makes it difficult to assess and regulate a healthy, balanced diet for students. Possible solutions to the problem are being debated, including reducing the cost of school meals and possible school board regulation on standards for packed meals.
