The last protest attracted hundreds of teachers, students, parents

School pupils go on strike

by Keith Nicol PROTESTS BY secondary students were peaceful and uneventful around the province in what the organizers described as a ‘success’ on the first day of the students strike.

Organised by the Student Union, about 90 percent of schoolchildren in Valencia and Alicante, as in Castellón protested by not showing up for school. The protest was organised against the educational policy of the MP Jose Ignacio Wert and the Organic Law for the Improvement of Educational Quality (Lomce), which calls for major cuts by the Ministry of Education.

The two days passed without incident with only low key

and informal picketing taking place at various points to encourage young people to endorse the protest. In Valencia there was “a small incident, without consequences” when a picket was informing drivers of the protest and although traffic was not blocked traffic, they were warned by police that they could be reported because their action is prohibited. For its part, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports did not provide any comment on the protests. The Students’ Union organized two demonstrations in Orihuela and Alicante on Wednesday and another two in Valencia and Alicante, at noon. Another reason that drove the students to the street was the increase in university fees and the implications of Lomce because, as reported pre-

viously in RTN, the rules affect intermediate education, promote social exclusion, segregation, privatization and commoditisation of education “and be detrimental to students working families.

The protest in the streets of Orihuela had little impact, as only a dozen students came to the concentration in Plaza Gabriel Miró. The student spokesman said it is unacceptable that the fees at universities are increasingly expensive and scholarships are declining, plus teachers cuts in higher education and institutes only affect the quality of education that students receive. With an appalling repeat rate of over 30% in the Valencian community alone, cuts in teacher numbers is Seeand page 34 of major concern to parents, teachers students alike.

by Keith Nicol NEXT FRIDAY, April 4th, professional boxing makes a long overdue return to Torrevieja, when the City of Salt’s first ever professional boxer and now Spanish Champion Emiliano Casal, defends his lightweight belt.

There is a lot of local anticipation for this fight because the Spanish Lightweight champion has not boxed in his home town since 2007. Although Emiliano is the last fight of the night and top of the bill, there is a full card of fighters on the bill. Friday’s fight night location is the Cecilio Gallego Sports Pavilion, the one with the blue roof, with the first of the eight bouts starting at 8.30pm. The card mixes professional and amateur bouts, with boxers from England,

Spain and Norway taking part.

Apart from Emiliano, there is also an international heavyweight bout featuring the torrevejense ‘Moja’. The latest news is that there may be a change to the main bill as it’s emerged that the main challenger for the flyweight belt, boxer Juan Carlos López ‘King Daluz’, is suffering from tendonitis in his wrist and has withdrawn his challenge. However, stepping into the ring may be an even bigger challenge for Emiliano in the form of 30 yearold Andoni Alonso, who in true Muhammad Ali style has warned Emiliano Casal of a “TKO in the fifth round”. Alonso is in great shape having demolished his opponent in just two rounds last week, so is feeling very confident at giving Emiliano a first notch battle, over the scheduled 10 rounds.

by Keith Nicol IN 2007 Algorfa’s municipal government announced details of the construction of an ambitious Commercial Centre that would have created upwards of 2,000 much needed new jobs.

The project was announced around the same time as the then proposed Zenia Blvd, raising eyebrows in many quarters as to how two huge shopping centres would be able to attract enough consumers to justify their existence. This week Algorfa’s City Council returned one million euros to the developer and the project in its original form, is now

closed but may be offered to other interested parties in the future.

The project was to build one of the largest malls in the country, totalling 563,000 square metres on the outskirts of Algorfa. The PP government team gave approval this week to the request of the developing company, Orishas Trust, to whom they returned the one million euros they deposited as security in 2007. The developer noted that over the last five years, that the City has failed to conclude the administrative process of the partial plan to allow them to start construction on the shopping complex, which had Eroski

as main attraction and anchor store, as announced at the time by Mayor Antonio Lorenzo Paredes (PP).

According to the Spanish press, the Partido Popular government now says it will try again to promote the area future development. The area designed for the commercial centre lies around Montebello II industrial area.

This is a privileged location with excellent connections of the AP-37 motorway exit to Torrevieja , next to the old prefabricated factory and a major hub for traffic for Algorfa, Almoradi, Rojales, Rojales, Los Montesinos, Quesada, San Miguel and Torrevieja.

ON THURSDAY morning at 1.30am, Torrevieja Hospital celebrated its 10,000 birth with the arrival of Ramon.

Ramon’s parents, Maria Bermudez and Ramon Fernandez are both Torrevieja residents and expressed their joy at the birth of their third child and gave their thanks to the team of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Torrevieja Hospital has six labour rooms, for both delivery and individual recovery and are equipped with the latest technology. In addition, the hospital provides the application of epidural anesthesia 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, unless medically contraindicated.

Spain number one in A Place in the Sun

by Keith Nicol SPAIN, AND especially the Costa Blanca region, will be on the mind of thousands of interested property buyers this weekend. ‘A Place in the Sun Live’ is the UK’s largest and best-attended overseas property exhibition and is taking place at Olympia London this weekend, from today 28th March, through to Sunday 30th March 2014.

Exhibiting at the show are such well known local companies as TM, MASA and Marsol Internacional from Torrevieja, of the 160 companies exhibiting, 70 of these are promoting Spain at the show. Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office is represented by Alicante’s British Consul Paul Rodwell, who is a key speaker at the event. He is on stage on five occasions in the Theatre for the featured talk on ‘How, what and where to buy in Spain’ as the only impartial speaker with three other presenters, promoting Spain.

by Jan Gamm SPAIN IS in mourning for the country’s first ‘post-Franco’ Prime Minister, Adolfo Suarez, who died of a respiratory infection this week aged 81, having suffered with Alzheimer’s for the last ten years. A long-standing friend of King Juan Carlos, Suarez was one of Spain’s most respected politicians, charged with uniting the country’s political factions on the death of General Franco in 1975, winning Spain’s first democratic elections in 1977. Suarez’ son, Adolfo Suarez Illana, praised both his father’s and the King’s role in the post-Franco period: “Thanks to the King, he was able to do what was needed at a unique moment in the history of Spain. Together, they changed the course of history.”

COPPER THEFT is now reaching unmanageable levels throughout Spain, forcing police to resort to elaborate alarm systems to alert local constabularies when thefts are taking place. Alarms are not particularly successful as by the time the police arrive the thieves have often made their escape. However, in the absence of any other solution it is all the authorities can do… In the village of El Abdet in the Marina Baixa recently 100 residents were left without telephones for 15 days while Telefonica repaired broken lines due to copper wire theft. So far this month there have been 75 such thefts in the province of Alicante alone. Repairs are prioritised depending on the number of residents left isolated by the interruption in service.

Torrevieja makes history at the European Parliament

by Keith Nicol FOR THE first time in history the music of the world famous Habaneras was heard in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday. The occasion was the presentation of the 60th Anniversary of the International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony of Torrevieja and such is the high standing of the event that the ceremony was also attended by a large number of Spanish MEPs from all political parties, Pilar del Castillo, former Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain from 2000 to 2004 and the director of the Cervantes Institute in Brussels, Maria Gonzalez Encinar. MEP Eva Ortiz said of the event; “Torrevieja and the Habaneras have become the capital of European culture this week, with the celebration of this historic concert.”

The initiative behind the occasion was a special presentation organised to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony, which will be contested this coming July. As also happened last week at the headquarters of the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid, the city offered an intimate concert under the name “In times of Havana” featuring a selection of torrevejenses

vocalists representing Torreieja’s major choirs under the direction of conductor and composer, Aurelio Martínez López.

Oriolana MEP Eva Ortiz, who has been one of the main promoters of this major event, served as host of the Torrevieja delegation led by Mayor Eduardo Dolon and Councillor for Culture and deputy of Habaneras, Luis María Pizana.

The vice president of the Generalitat Valenciana, José Císcar, endorsed the torrevejense delegation who had travelled to Brussels expressly for the occasion and highlighted the importance of the annual event; “as one of the main cultural and musical references of the

Valencian Community.” José Císcar met with the mayor, Eduardo Dolon and MEP, Eva Ortiz, who welcomed the delegation; “who shared the most precious element of Torrevieja’s musical culture, the Habaneras, which attracted the interest of so many people who have recognised the importance of this cultural event in the heart of Europe.”

Eduardo Dolon thanked Ciscar for his great efforts to promote Torrevieja and Contest of Habanera and the chance to be able to present such an important aspect of Torrevieja culture at the European Parliament, for such an important event is its 60th anniversary.

THE APPOINTMENT of a Spanish nanny to look after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s baby son, Prince George, is attracting considerable comment in the UK. Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo has been given a fulltime appointment at Kensington Palace where she is to have her own accommodation. Ms Borrallo, who began her new appointment as royal nanny at the end of February, will accompany the Duke and Duchess on their tour of Australia and New Zealand next month, in charge of Prince George while his parents attend public engagements. She is a dedicated Norland College ‘career nanny’, although unlike the average ‘Mary Poppins’ prefers to wear casual clothes rather than the distinctive Norland brown uniform. Ms Borrallo is thought to be the first foreign nanny to look after a future British monarch.

Since Ms Borallo began working for the Cambridges it has come to light that she allegedly is still on the Town Hall’s ‘black list’ in her home town of Palencia, despite clearing an IBI bill left in arrears in 2007/8. Palencia council declined to comment.

AVE to Alicante: the dead link DATA PROVIDED by hoteliers has revealed that 60% of passengers travelling into Alicante via the AVE train service are going on from the city to other tourist destinations, the most popular being Benidorm, Denia, Calpe, Torrevieja and Santa Pola.

by Jan Gamm Of every 100 people going into Alicante by train, more than 30 do not stay in the capital but travel to other parts of the province via car, taxi, etc., making uncomfortable connections instead of enjoying the convenience of smooth shuttle links to major tourist hubs on the Costa Blanca such as Benidorm and Torrevieja. Benidorm Hotel association Hosbec has always strongly criticised the decision of Alicante mayor Sonia Castedo to block Passengers shuttle connections from the Alicante terminal at the design stage. Hosbec boss Antonio tackle Mayor, upholding that it is vital to provide passengers with reliable links to tourist centres uncomfortable of their choice, said on Tuesday: “It is madness. Something must be done urgently to reclinks out of Alicante tify this situation that is a direct result of Castedo’s crazy decision-making.”

An internet disgrace!

ACCORDING TO a study published today by the European Commission, internet users in Spain in 2013 paid between 40€ and 60€ for monthly broadband services, the second highest in Europe. Cyprus hit the top spot between 46€ and 90€. Lithuania and Romania offers the most competitive prices, between 10€ and 11€. Speaking in Brussels on Tuesday the Vice President of the EC, Neelie Kroes, said: “There is no single ‘internet market’, and that has to change. Nothing justifies that one European has to pay more than four times what another

pays for the same broadband usage.” Other studies showed that in broadband markets in the EU there are virtually no guidelines or coherence. It was noted that 66% of citizens do not know what internet speed they have contracted and that consumers get on average only 75% of the broadband they have hired.

The European Parliament is to vote next week on a series of measures proposed by the Commission aimed at rectifying the problem and regulating rights and services for consumers across Europe.

POLLEN LEVELS this year are assessed to be the worst in a decade, with Cypress pollen (ornamental hedges) in late January registering almost 2,000 grains per cubic metre: 25 – 30 grains produce symptoms. Experts are also concerned that pollution levels in built up areas aggravate the effects of pollen proteins in chronic sufferers, causing damage to the mucosa. Heavily polluted areas have a higher incidence of asthma and allergic diseases.

Lib Dems back expat votes

by Jack Troughton CAMPAIGNERS FIGHTING for expats to be represented and have a voice in the House of Commons have found an ally in the Liberal Democrats.

The party has adopted as policy recognising the right of all British citizens living in Europe to be represented in UK Government.

Following the party’s York conference, the Lib Dems will “explore the viability” of having overseas constituencies as already used in other European countries.

And MPs and MEPs are to seek an EUwide reciprocal agreement to insure all EU citizens who exercise their right of freedom of movement will not find themselves disenfranchised.

The party believes this could be achieved through existing models – Austria uses an ‘opt-in’ scheme where citizens wishing to vote in their home country make a declaration they wish to do so every 10 years.

In addition those who choose not to have a vote back at home could ‘opt out’ to have a voice in their country of residence. In Spain, for example, expats can only vote in local and European elections.

Margaret Hales, MBE, of the Votes for Expat Brits pressure group, said she was “delighted” the Liberal Democrats recognised at Britons abroad “not only have a right to take

part in the democratic processes of Britain but very many of us want to take part.”

DIFFICULTY She said “unfortunately” there were many difficulties stacked up against expats – such as the problems of registration, postal delays and disenfranchisement under the 15 years rule – although some were being addressed.

Margaret, who lives in Benitachell, added: “but if one part of the establishment is now going to support us, that’s wonderful. Now we have the difficult task of working on Mr Milliband’s merry men!

“I fear that the Conservatives are more consumed with immigration and referenda than looking after the rights of their British citizens.

But that should not stop us, I beg everyone to write to their MP and tell them we want our vote...email them at the Houses of Parliament!

All that can should register to vote.”

Fellow campaigner Brian Cave said Britain was just one of five European countries from 28 which prevented its citizens from having a full democratic voice in their respective national elections. He added: “The only other group of British citizens to be deprived of the vote are prisoners!”

Beware of ladies with flowers

I FEEL that I must write to warn others.

My experience left me weak at the knees thinking about ‘what nearly was’. Tuesday March 4th: a beautiful day and some family members including my young grandson and I decided to have walk along the sea front. I momentarily forgot the common sense rules about safely carrying credit cards and cash.

Literally two minutes after arriving at the sea front I was aware of two short, middleaged women carrying flowers behind me. Foolishly, I had my shoulder bag round my back and not in front. Talking as one does and totally distracted I noticed an almost imperceptible movement on my bag. I pulled my bag immediately round to the front of me and noticed that the zip was open!

I was rooted to the spot and my stomach fell to my shoes and for a few seconds I did not dare to look in my unzipped bag for fear of what I may find or not find.

When I summoned up the courage to check on my purse I did find it intact - but my nerves were totally shattered. Of course like an idiot I had everything in it cash, credit cards, driving license, medical card etc.

When I turned around to look for the two women with the flowers they were drifting off into the crowd going the other way.

So please be aware of smiling ladies carrying flowers!

Nothing more to do than complain

I MUST reply to Frank Colet’s letter RTN 21-27th march concerning motor homes.

As a Spanish property owner and motor home owner often parking in the car park beside Mercadona (it is not owned

by Mercadona) the toilet cassettes are emptied into a cesspit (the same place Franks No 2 goes). Water we get from a garage where we buy fuel. Groceries and water come from Mercadona or playa Flamenca market, thus putting money into Spanish bank accounts.

We own a house on Montegolf and pay

all due charges but prefer to visit other parts of Spain and Europe. France especially is ‘motor home friendly’, often costing nothing or a few euros to park and do other necessities. We have tried campsites but find the rules too restricted. We parked at Florentillies, San Miguel with friends. After 5 days were told people had complained (expats with nothing to do but complain) that we did not have our very small dog tied up (she never wandered off our pitch). We had to pay 1.75€ a day for a dog and she was not al-

lowed to be walked around the campsite but had to be exercised off site on a very busy road. We left immediately at a cost off 85€. As for an eyesore most motor homes cost more than Frank’s house. ‘An eyesore’ is the builders rubbish left at our community green bin; the dog poop not picked up by irresponsible owners; and abandoned buildings left unfinished.

He would have something to complain about if he lived in UK near a gypsy site.

Instead of moving on motor homes the police should be checking UK-registered cars running around with no tax or MOT. Shirley Snook

“Vete”!

ALTHOUGH MOST people are aware of pickpockets in crowded areas on the Costa Blanca I would like to draw your readers’ attention to another crime which targets vulnerable and disabled people.

I am wheelchair bound due to an amputation of my leg and rely on my wife to assist me in and out of the car and lift the wheelchair into and out of the boot.

On occasions passers-by have offered help to get my leg into the car and have assisted my wife to fold and lift the wheelchair. This has been much appreciated and we have both expressed surprise at how helpful people are in Spain.

But now we are very wary and suspicious as on two recent occasions rather than helping us, thieves have helped themselves to my wife’s purse, taking it from a small bag which she wears across her body.

These thefts were not noticed until sometime later when we needed cash or a credit card.

We are now sadly going to say “Vete!” (Go away!) to any offer of help. So be aware - if you are vulnerable due to a disability, you could be an easy target for the unscrupulous.

In an in-vernal spin over my equinoxes WELL, I hadn’t heard from him in nearly four years so I thought I was safe - but after last week’s WIB I’ve once again stirred the Brigadier (somewhere in Javea) to put pen to paper; or more accurately keystroke to email. What had I done wrong? What inaccuracies had I let through this time? Apparently, the cause of his current ire was my declaration of spring being March 21st. “This is completely inaccurate Watts,” he groans.

Okay, the longest day is always June 21 and the shortest day is always December 21, is this not so?

Therefore, I’ve always reckoned the spring equinox to be March 21 and this is what I declared last week. But this wasn’t the case. Oh no I was a day late because this year the equinox was March 20. “And,” bemoans the Brig, “I wish you popularizing hacks would use the correct name: it’s the vernal equinox.” Hmmm, like many things Brig, sometimes there’s more than one name for an action, object or person. But whichever term you use: spring, vernal or March the fact is the equinox does move about a bit.

My astronomy teaching chum Dave Feintuck told me, “Your correspondent is correct Paul, this year’s equinox was indeed the twentieth but it can occur on any of three days in March.” Dave gave me a brief les-

son on when this is: “The equinox occurs the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator. That is the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator [Dave waves his hand in some middle distant point] from south to north. This happens either on March 19, 20 or 21 every year. And this year it was last Thursday.”

All of which means the Brigadier was right. Over the years I guess I’ve just tied it in with my parent’s wedding anniversary on March 21 – and that event, dear Brig, is a fixed point! Oh well, you learn something everyday.

With that in mind and for the delectation of pedants in Javea and beyond here are some salient equinoxal factoids: “The Earth’s axis is always tilted at an angle of about 23.5° in relation to the ecliptic, the imaginary plane created by the Earth’s path around the Sun. However, the tilt’s orientation changes throughout the year.

On any other day of the year, the Earth’s axis tilts a little away from or towards the Sun. But on the two equinoxes, the Earth’s axis tilts neither away from nor towards the Sun and is perpendicular to the Sun’s rays…”

Gosh, that’s a lot to take in; I think I prefer to view it with this marvellous new photo that NASA has released. It shows the Earth on the day of the vernal equinox as captured by the GOES-13 satellite operated

It is a tad America-centric, which may upset the Brigadier as Javea is not yet in sight, but nonthe-less is a glorious view of our world. And for the further delectation of pedants in Javea and beyond a NASA official reported in the image description: “This full-disk image from NOAA’s GOES-13 satellite was captured at 11:45 UTC (7:45 a.m. EDT) and shows the Americas on March 20, 2014. This date marks the start of astronomical spring in the northern hemisphere.”

Gastronomic delights with ‘Desayun-Arte Breakfast-Art’

by Keith Nicol ALONG WITH sand, sea, sports, sun and sangria, one of Torrevieja’s newest tourism promotions is a new range of gastronomic events, building on such events as the successful Tapas Route. Their newest initiative was something of a mystery when it came to an explanation as to what was exactly going to happen, but was promoted as a sort of breakfast picnic, that is intended to become a monthly event in different parts around the city.

On Sunday, the first Breakfast Art event was organised around the Plaza de Oriente, where more than fifty people from various groups and associations, gathered at the side

of the Church of the Sacred Heart, for the first such breakfast picnic, on this occasion organised by the Departments of Citizenship, Foreigners and Youth.

The activity invites all of Torrevieja’s groups and Associations to take the opportunity to share any type of gastronomic initiative on a monthly basis.

In essence the idea is to ‘share’ your picnic, to possibly arrange a Sunday morning event highlighting typical local choices of food, that one might find if out for brunch in any of Torrevieja’s more than one hundred countries that make up Torrevieja’s diverse population. On Sunday, there was certainly something for everyone: all kinds of meats,

The planned concert set lasted almost an hour and a half and was primarily a tribute to the legendary Nat King Cole, featuring a repertoire of some of the biggest hits of his long career including ‘I can’t give you anything but love’, ‘This can’t be love’, ‘Mood Indigo’, ‘Straighten up and fly right’, ‘Sunny Side of the Street’ and ‘Route 66’. The success of the first such festival bodes well for a second and longer cycle in 2015.

Charity Cricket Match NEXT SATURDAY 5th April, a charity cricket match between Torrevieja CC and La Marina Mean Machine will take place at the Dani Plaza Athletics Track in the Torrevieja sports centre. The Mean Machine is a team of volunteers who raise money for the AECC, and one of their members, Paul (Doc) Docherty initiated a trophy to be contested annually. Torrevieja CC won it last year so the Mean Machine is out for revenge. Sadly, Paul passed away in 2013 but requested that further money raised should go to ‘wish upon a star’, a charity that gives terminally ill children a holiday. The match starts at 10.30am and they hope as many people as possible turn up to support this worthy cause.

by Keith Nicol NICOLA KUHN made headlines again last weekend, losing out in a closely fought final against newly crowned Valencian Champion Marcos Sanz. Although obviously disappointed, the Torrevieja Tennis Club player showed his ever-increasing maturity as a future professional player, as although he finished runner up, he was playing two years above his age category, at Under 16 level.

Nicola is currently training at the Academia Equelite de Juan Carlos Ferrero, under the guidance of former World Number One Juan Carlos himself. Nicola did not a drop a single set on his way to the final with only a couple of points separating the two, as Marcos Sanz won the final only 7:6, 6:4.

dies were also receiving some attention with torrevejense tennis player Eva Guerrero winning the qualifying tournament for the Mutual Madrid Open U-16 tournament, which was held in the RCT Barcelona. The confident Guerrero winning the final against Marina Olalla seeded number one, by a clear 6:1, 6:1.

The win qualifies Eva to play in the Mutua Madrid Open Under -16 category, which is played at the same time as the 1000 Mutua Madrid professional competition in Madrid next May, 2014. Torrevieja ranks second overall, after Valencia, in the Provincial Tennis rankings, with at least three or four other junior players also climbing the Spanish national rankings in their age categories and looking to possible professional careers, including Joshua Merino, JesĂşs Quesada, David Caprotta, Andrei Devyatkin and Carlos Guerrero.

Calling all trekkers!

ON SUNDAY 6th April 2014, the third ‘Vuelta a Rojales’ trekking day will be held: 7 hours over 30km – medium/low difficulty - part of the Rojales Sports Department’s signposted noncompetitive trekking routes within the Municipality. Around 400 trekkers are expected to take part. The route starts on the weekly market grounds, continuing to the Segura River, Cabezo Soler Hill and the ‘El Recorral’ Park towards La Mata Natural Park, the first stop for fruit and water. Trekkers will continue through Ciudad Quesda to ‘Hoyo Serrano’, the second refreshment spot, on through Heredades, the Segura River towards Rojales to end by the weekly market grounds, where they will enjoy a snack.

Local Police officers as well as Protección Civil volunteers will accompany the hikers for the whole route (organisers have civil liability insurance and accident insurance).

The band had everyone on their feet dancing to the sounds of Motown and soul, helping to raise 730€ for the AECC through the raffle and donations. Maria and The Pink Ladies wanted to thank all the staff at Breakaways and Soul Power for providing them with an excellent evening of music, dance and entertainment, all in aid of a very worthwhile cause.

SO, HERE we are in Spring! If you live on the Costa Blanca or have spent much of the past by few months out here, you will perhaps feel that winter passed us by this year. We could Suzanne probably count on one hand the number of times we’ve had to reach for the brolly.

NOW, WE have the promise of all the spring and summer to come but aren’t yet wilting under the intense July and August heat. It’s a time to make decisions and, without putting a damper on it, it’s time to take a fresh look at your paperwork too.

Many of you are doing just that. We were delighted to play host to so many British residents who attended our recent event, ‘Tax, Tea and Travel’ at La Zenia Hotel last week. Their questions were a timely reminder about just how much confusion there still is surrounding tax and legal issues in Spain and also just how keen the majority of people are to do it right.

Not everyone is interested in or able to come to one of our events, so here are a selection of questions that we have found that expats are asking:

IF I HAVE NO TAX TO PAY WHAT’S THE POINT IN MAKING AN ANNUAL DECLARATION? We do recommend that all residents make an annual tax declaration whether or not they have to pay taxes.

Doing so makes it easier to show that you are a fiscal resident which is particularly beneficial when it comes to either selling or bequeathing your home. It means that usually, a much lower rate of inheritance tax applies and that you won’t have 3% retained on the sale of your house.

I LIVE IN SPAIN FOR SEVEN MONTHS OF THE YEAR – AM I A RESIDENT? Yes, you are, if you live in Spain for more than 183 days a year.

WHEN, WHERE AND HOW SHOULD I MAKE A DECLARATION AND IS IT COMPLICATED? The resident annual tax declaration must be made before 30th June every year to take into account the previous year’s income. A good fiscal representative will help you through the process and ensure that it is kept as simple as possible with explanations delivered in your native tongue.

The declaration is simple, useful and required in the vast majority of cases. The spring is a good time of year for clearing out the winter woollies (if you needed them in the first place) and clearing up your pending paperwork too.

I ONLY DRAW A SMALL PENSION: DO I REALLY NEED TO MAKE A RESIDENT TAX DECLARATION? People are often surprised at the threshold above which residents are required to make an annual resident tax declaration. For example, if you receive one or more pensions from abroad that total more than 11,200€ a year then you are required to make one (other conditions also apply). Pre nuptial agreements

MARRIAGE BETWEEN expatriates with different nationalities in Spain I INTEND to marry my current partner. We are both expatriates (non Spanish) living in Spain, I am British, whilst my partner is not. Could we sign a prenuptial agreement? If so would it be possible to do so now, before getting married? How would we do it?

Though both of you are of different nationality, if you both reside in Spain at the time of the marriage, the law applicable to your marriage should be Spanish Law. Regarding which law would apply, it could be the common and general Spanish Law, ie the Spanish Civil Code and national regulations for marriages, family law, etc., or the foral law, which is the special law of some areas of Spain, which have their own family law, like Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana ( Alicante, Valencia and Castellon), etc.

If in your case the common law applied, (national

common regulation for the whole of Spain less the communities with their own law), then it is possible to grant a prenuptial agreement, ( capitulaciones matrimoniales. These are regulated in the Spanish Civil Code, articles from 1325 to 1355.

From these articles and regulations, it must be highlighted that: The prenuptial agreements could be granted and signed before or after the marriage.

To be legally valid, the prenuptial agreements must be on a public deed, granted in front of a notary, and these agreements could not be against the law, customary practice or limit the spouse’s right to equality.

It must be noted on the marriage registration in the Civil Registry that the prenuptial agreement has been granted if it modifies the marriage’s economic regime.

In your question you say you want to grant and sign a prenuptial agreement now, before the marriage.

As per the article 1334 of the Civil Code, you may grant it, but for it to have effect you must be married within 1 year.

Each individual has an allowance of ÂŁ325,000 before IHT is payable in the UK and a couple would therefore have a combined allowance of ÂŁ650,000.

For those of you with private pensions with effect from 27th March the following rules change: An increase in the maximum amount from a drawdown pension in UK to 150% of GAD: this increases the amount available (as of March 2014) for a 65 year old from 7.08% p.a. to 8.85% p.a.

Reduction in the amount of guaranteed income needed to take advantage of Flexible Drawdown to £12,000.

The trivial commutation limit increased from £18,000 to £30,000.

Smaller pension funds can be taken as a lump sum, regardless of triviality limit: now three funds up to a maximum £10,000 each.

A number of the remaining changes are still subject to consultation and indeed legislation in the Finance Act 2015, immediately ahead of the UK General Election – this in itself creates further uncertainty.

But the main announcement was that from April 2015 you will be allowed the cash in all of your UK private pension: please note this does not and will not include final salary or government pension and at the moment QROPS. However, what has been glossed over is that if you cash in your pension you will be taxed and this could be as high as 45%.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: In section 2.67 of the 2014 UK Budget Report, the intention is stated to remove the personal allowance from non-residents – unless they can prove close ties with the UK. If only some of the fund is taken from a UK Defined Contribution Scheme (e.g. a SIPP), the balance will be charged at 55% on death – potentially being reduced, subject to consultation, but unlikely to be below 40% even after this.

Final salary and Government pensions will not be able to be cashed in and they will no longer be allowed to be transferred i.e. to a QROPS. As an expatriate in Spain you have another route. Many of you will have read about QROPS and their benefits. Benidorm Casino taking shape

By Irena Bodnarec THE NEW ´Casino Mediterraneo´ in Benidorm, due to open in July have started the process of recruiting staff. Over 400 applicants applied for 70 jobs and interviews have been taking place this week.

The successful candidates will attend a casino training school which will take place at the Palau dÉsports L´llla in Benidorm, starting on 1st April and ending at the end of June.

A mock casino has been specially set up and classes will be taught in American Roulette, Black Jack, Poker, Texas Hold´em and Punto Banco as well as the use of gaming and sports betting machines.

Staff will also be trained for other positions such as customer service agents, receptionists, waiters and hospitality services.

Refreshing rains and a change of plan AFTER A day of shopping and investigating gazeboes yesterday I had planned a long session in the garden this morning but during two long early Skype calls it started to pour and continued for a couple of hours. So it has been a catching-up computer day instead.

At least the plants have been refreshed and the soil will now be easier to work when planting a few extra summer lilies; planting potatoes and giving the veggie plot a rotovate; sowing alfalfa for the rabbits and extra nutritious leaf for salads; sowing squashes and courgettes plus some summer beans. I have wandered around the garden to collect salad leaves - the only damage from the rain are some bashed down dwarf irises and about-to-open freesias.

BRUSSELS ABOUT TO LEGISLATE ON GARDEN PLANTS One of the problems with the administration of the European Union is that the tone of most of its initiatives are restrictive rather than giving strategic leadership for resident peoples and individuals. Also as more and more countries have joined the mix of nationalities to be given appointments in each Directorate the selection process becomes more complex, taking into account experiences interests and language abilities up and down the corporate ladders.

Regulations on food growing are soon likely to be influenced by crop energy balances and gaseous pollutants. Attempts have recently been made to control seed swaps and according to The Sunday Express, controls on the varieties of flowering plants we are allowed to have in our gardens from the Arctic Circle of Finland to the Northern shores of the Straits of Gibraltar.

UK could be seriously affected by the ban on the sale and planting of some varieties of rhododendron and in Spain on lantanas. I asked a university botanist why? The answer was ‘climate change due to global warming they could become evasive and encroach on the habitats of plants that have been naturalised in Spain for a longer time’.

Every year I dig up a good number of invasive plants such as olive pine privet and palm saplings, bay and carob bonsais, and wild asparagus and blackberry bushes. But very rarely does a self-seeded lantana bush appear and when they have they have generally been interesting natural crosses of colours.

I will keep track of the development of this legislation and update you when I can. It would be interesting to know the percentage of plants in today’s garden centres and gardens that were not in Spain before the exploration and raping of the Caribbean and South America and of the last mini ice age that finished in Spain in the mid 1800’s. What a good Neighbour Kylie has turned out to be!

KYLIE MINOGUE was born in Melbourne in 1968, and at an almighty 5 feet tall had to have her chair on The Voice specially modified to make her a similar height to the other judges, but when it comes to stature, Kylie is head and shoulders above the other three guys.

She was interviewed by online newspaper Metro last week and revealed quite a bit about both her professional and private life. It all started for her way back in 1986 when she was cast as Charlene Mitchell, a schoolgirl come garage mechanic in Neighbours, and although it was all a bit tame, it kick-started her singing career. She sadly recorded all sorts of sugar coated pop, but there was always something about her that kept her in the limelight. Then her singing career took a massive nosedive at the tail end of the 90´s, but back she came with 3 x No1´s in the early 2000´s.

She started her interview with Metro talking about wanting to

resurrect her life in front of the camera saying “I love being on set, it was my first job, and I love the opportunity to not be ´Kylie, to be someone else,” adding, “at the moment it’s parked, but it’s something I’ll always have a little pilot light for,’ aah bless. She also admitted to having a quiet social life and said how Scissor Sisters singer Jake Spears used to buy two tickets to a movie and hustle her into going with him, calling him her ´naughty brother.´ All of that said, it’s her final revelation that I found the most amazing. Bringing in her time on ´The Voice´ Kylie admitted “I’m normally more reactive, or I go with the flow, I don’t like decisions!” and topping off that rather bizarre statement by adding “which is quite odd now I’m on The Voice which is decisions all day long, but I like to kind of feel my way.”Don’t you go worrying Kylie … you’re doing just fine hun!

Velocity Racing SATURDAY 22ND March saw the eagerly awaited return of stock car racing at the circuit in Cartagena. An expectant crowd settled in on the surrounding banks.

Velocity Racing provided 2 formulas on the night, Rookie and Lightning rods. Having had the winter months to prepare there was a range of new cars. With fresh tyres and throttles hard to the floor the 1st race for the rookies got off to a flying start. Proceedings were brought to a halt when last year’s champion Caroline Capel’s race came to an early with a spectacular crash through the tyre wall. With the race reset, debutant Jaz Lawrence went on to win.

The lighting rods first race also lacked nothing in excitement as the team from La Marina Services lost control in the home straight causing mayhem for the chasing pack as they took efforts to avoid the spinning car. Nick Kelly, current Lightning Rod Champion went on to win. With a total of 11 races, all went home thoroughly satisfied.

Next meeting on Saturday 12th April.

Pirate Party at Habaneras WOULD BE Peter Pan’s, Captain Hook’s or Errol Flynn’s can enjoy three weekends filed with pirate themed fun and games at Habaneras Commercial Centre. Starting tomorrow, Saturday 29th March, followed by the 5th and 12th April, there will be a ‘family gymkhana’ and treasure hunt with gifts for all participants and inflatable castles for visitors to the mall.

Very supersticious OLD WIVES’ tales and superstitions have some foundation and can circumnavigate both the truth and the reality that we are experiencing today. I cringe when two bad things happen and people bring on the third by saying that bad things come in threes. I quickly get in a, “bless you” whenever somebody sneezes, because it was a blessing that comes from the Great Plague. I love black cats and I often fly on Friday the 13th and walk under ladders. I am maybe a contradiction, but some things we do believe in, and our suspicions may be the solution to doing anything that just doesn’t feel right.

Luck comes our way when it can, but I can never understand those who buy a lottery ticket and then say that they are not going to win. Or those who give up on something that they really haven’t really tried, or given much attention or effort to. Magic can happen, but you have to allow for it, and it demands an open positive energy if it

is to work for us. When all seems to be going well we say that we are on a lucky streak, but maybe too we see how long that luck can last, and this could put the mockers on the whole she boodle! Have faith, ask for what you deserve and wait and see what happens. You can plan tomorrow and everything goes wrong…fail to plan a thing and just everything fits into place. The bread and jam slice will always hit the floor jam down too…but only if you believe it will.

Whatever you do please be careful in what you ask for.

When I first came to Spain in the 1980s it was hard to get a telephone installed and there were no mobiles. My dear Father always liked to be able to call me and in his frustration one day said I would never have a telephone in my house while he was alive! How right he was. It was a neighbour who took the call and told me of his demise one day. Later that morning Telefonica sent an installation engineer and by midday my two year wait was over and a telephone was in pride of place. Sorry Dad!

How we hear THE EAR consists of three main parts and performs a vital function in receiving and interpreting sound.

A Outer ear B Middle ear C Inner ear The Outer Ear collects sound vibrations in the concha (5) and passes them along the ear canal (6). The sound vibrates the ear drum (22) which in turn moves the tiny bones (14, 10 and18) in the Middle ear. This movement transmits vibration to the cochlea (4) in the Inner Ear where they are received by fragile microscopic hair cells that covert vibration into nerve impulses for onward transmission by auditory nerve to the brain for recognition.

It is very important as human beings to use our sense of hearing. Losing the sense of hearing can completely change a person’s way of living. We should be properly educated in how to care for our sense of hearing by knowing how it works and preventing common causes of hearing loss.

The ear consists of three main parts and each performs

a vital function in receiving and interpreting sound and it is very important that they function together perfectly.

Permanent hearing loss can occur once any of these parts encounters a problem.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Adjectival agreement LAST WEEK we talked about the gender of nouns and how the articles (“a” and “the”) and adjectives (describing words) change their endings to match the gender of the nouns.

Now we’ve got those basic principles established we can start looking a bit more closely at adjectives and how they change. This is really very simple. Last lesson we looked at the word for “small”, that is pequeño and we saw how it changes in four ways – pequeño, pequeña, pequeños, pequeñas, equivalent to masculine and feminine singular, masculine and feminine plural. The root form which you will find in a dictionary is the masculine singular pequeño.

All adjectives that end in “o” in their masculine singular form change in exactly the same way. There are thousand of them. Here are a few that we can use to describe people: alto “tall”, bajo “short”, gordo “fat”, delgado “thin”, tímido “shy”, simpático “nice”, guapo “handsome”, feo “ugly”, viejo “old”. In each case they will have the four changes I have mentioned, so for example: El hombre guapo - the handsome man Los hombres guapos - the handsome men La mujer guapa – the pretty woman Las mujeres guapas – the pretty women Notice that in the case of the word guapo we have a different translation in English for male and female: male - handsome (or as my daughters would say - cute), and female - pretty. For most of the other words however the translations would be the same – “nice man” “nice woman” etc.

Exactly the same principle works for adjectives that

describe things (remember, things are the same as people in Spanish, with either masculine or feminine gender). So, for example, we could have the word “long” which is largo used to describe an object.

Un palo largo - a long stick Una cortina larga – a long curtain Now as I have said, in each of these cases, the basic adjective ends in the letter “o”. However, adjectives can end in almost any letter – so what do we do with all the others? (I hear you ask). Well, let’s look at a few random examples: Azul - blue, grande – big, joven – young, feliz – happy Adjectives such as those above that do not end in “o” can only change from singular to plural: they cannot make any change to differentiate them between masculine and feminine. Therefore we have: El libro azul - the blue book La mesa azul – the blue table El zapato grande – the big shoe La camisa grande – the big shirt El hombre joven – the young man La mujer joven – the young woman El niño feliz - the happy boy La niña feliz – the happy girl However, in the plural, these adjectives add “s” or “es”

in exactly the same way as nouns do. Here are the same phrases again in the plural.

Los libros azules - the blue books Las mesas azules – the blue tables Los zapatos grandes – the big shoes Las camisas grandes – the big shirts Los hombres jóvenes – the young men Las mujeres jóvenes – the young women Los niños felices - the happy boys Las niñas felices – the happy girls We can notice two different things here. Firstly look at the adjectives in both sets of phrases and you will see that in each case there are only two possible forms - singular and plural.

Secondly, if you compare the two languages in all of these examples, you will see that every single word changes in Spanish (article, noun, adjective), whereas in English we only change one word - the noun – which changes into a plural word.

In real life, when we are speaking Spanish in real situations, it is very difficult to get these right, but in the words of Corporal Jones, “Whatever you do – don’t panic!” The Spanish are used to foreigners getting these endings mixed up. For our AngloSaxon brains it’s just too much to remember changing all those fiddly endings all the time. Our learning goes in stages, understanding first before we can speak correctly, so your only task at this stage is simply to pay attention to these differences – understand what is going on and notice it as you listen to the Spanish around you, on the radio and television, on “Youtube”, or anywhere else you get the chance to hear it.

As you suggested I used to download books from Amazon.com or co.uk but now I only use Amazon.es as there are thousands of books listed in English on the Amazon.es site. If you know the Author or book title that you are looking for you can ‘search’ either the Author’s name or the book title: you do not need to enter both into the ‘search’.

The book that you are looking for may be listed in several languages, including English, but it is usually there. Alternatively, look on the Amazon. es website under ‘books’, then ‘libros en idiomas extranjeros’ and you will find thousands of books in English. If you search using your Kindle itself, all the books listed will be e-books. If you search the Amazon site on your PC or laptop you will find hard copy books and e-books sometimes together.

In the past I have twice emailed Amazon about listing particular books that I could not find on the site. They are more than happy to ask the author if they wish to list it as an e-book and on one occasion the author did list the book, it only took a few days, and on the other occasion the author already had an agreement in place that did not include listing it in the Amazon.es site and would not have it added. DEAR AUNTY VIRUS: I have a laptop running on Vista business and use Yahoo Mail.

When I receive an email with a .doc attachment when I click on this it generates a preview showing the document but will either not print at all or just print the first page on top of the background of the email. If I try to download it comes up with ‘The screen view and track your downloads’ screen and this gives the document title and says ‘open’ or ‘save’. When I click either of these nothing happens. I have looked in my Documents file but nothing has actually saved. I know it may sound very strange but can you help? Regards, Joyce.

Aunty says: A ‘.doc’ is a Microsoft Word document. If you do not have MS Word installed on your PC it may not open.

Some internet browsers will support ‘.doc’ files, but you have not said which internet browser you are using. DEAR AUNTY: Further to your advice to Mary regarding Kindle downloads, perhaps this information might prove useful. At Christmas I bought my partner a new Kindle Fire HD as a replacement for her original Kindle. It was bought from Amazon.es using a Spanish Amazon account, though a British debit card domiciled in the UK. The unit was subsequently delivered from Germany, (not important) though set up in Spanish.

What we have found is that after we added the term ‘en Ingles’ after any book that we were specifically looking for, Amazon seems to have got ‘the drop’ on the fact that we are only interested in books published in English and any advertising they choose to send by email is purely concerned with this. Thus far we have bought many books including authors like Ken Follet, James Thurber and 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup... all English versions. Hope this assists, Steve.

FOR MANY amateur golfers the first bit of exercise they get before a round of golf is when they bend down to place a tee in the ground. This is frequently accompanied by a groan and a slow rise whilst holding the lower back.

by Tony Myles I HAVE discovered, as many of you will have, that the correct start to a good game of golf is not necessarily the opening shot down the first fairway.

It actually starts several minutes before your backswing and it can mean the difference between a memorable round and one that you would prefer to forget.

WARM UP We are all aware that professionals will spend hours each day on the practice ground and we have seen them in advance of each major round spending a significant amount of time just warming up each part of their anatomy. Most of them employ professional masseurs to ensure that there are no torn muscles and sprains following the first drive. So having a quick swish with your driver may not be sufficient.

Whilst the chance of winning two Euros is marginally less important than winning a Major the risk of injury is probably greater. And so what can we do about it?

KEEP IT SIMPLE! Every golf magazine has at sometime produced a guide to effective warming-up exercises and like most golfers I have taken heed of some of their advice and employed some of the exercises some of the times. What I need is a simple routine that takes less than ten minutes and can be done whilst waiting for my turn to tee-off. Not much to ask for is it?

The problem with many such routines is that they are best employed whilst lying down on an exercise mat and it is a fair bet that rolling your mat out and squatting in front of the club house will probably do your reputation no good whatsoever and the chances of finding people to play with you will equally diminish.

So what I need is probably something midway between a

quick swish with my driver and a full yoga routine. I think I may have found it!

EASY AND BENEFICIAL Campbell Lamont plays off a very low handicap and hits the ball an unreasonable distance and so I am prepared to give credibility to what he has to say on this subject.

The good news is that it is very easy. Needs no special equipment. And you won’t get funny looks from your colleagues - well no more than usual.

Campbell employs a ball retriever. Most of us have one in our bags, and if not we can probably borrow one.

Extend this to about six feet and place it across your shoulder blades. Then extend your arms underneath and grasp the pole from behind. Now swing fully right and left. Taking each swing to a comfortable distance. If you repeat this for five or ten minutes you will feel the added flexibility in your hips. You will also retain a muscle memory that is rhythmic and smooth and as a result your initial tee shot will stand a much better chance of staying on course.

Volvo V40 D3 R-Design LASER RADAR: It sounds like something from a scifi thriller but we’re actually talking about technology fitted to Volvo cars, those traditionally staid and dull vehicles, favoured by the ‘flat cap brigade’.

Today’s hip and trendy Volvos are anything but and are packed with sophisticated technology that keeps the brand at the forefront of car design and manufacture. Its laser radar systems are a key ingredient.

I’m testing the V40 D3 R-Design, a performance five door hatchback. And it’s fitted with an intelligent yet simple to operate cruise control. As you might expect this keeps the car travelling at the desired speed but unlike most systems it also measures the distance of the car in front.

This ensures that it keeps the Volvo at a safe distance behind. It does this by automatically braking and accelerating thanks to the information relayed by its clever laser radar. This distance can be changed from reasonably close to quite far away depending on driving conditions.

In theory this is a valuable tool that should mean that the driver can relax. Not so though. My test takes place in torrential downpours and high winds and I discover that the radar is not infallible.

This becomes particularly noticeable while at 70mph round a bend on a dual carriageway. The Volvo is in the outside lane but on approaching the bend there is a car on the inside and the radar picks this up and brakes abruptly despite there being no cars in front of me. This annoys me and I cancel the function.

On another occasion we are on a straight road and high winds cause a

flashing red warning bar on the driver’s side of the dashboard to light up – accompanied by a really loud beep - for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

My sleeping children wake up. High side winds seem to completely throw the radar and despite there being no traffic in front the Volvo brakes sharply from 70mph to 50mph.

That said this cruise control is quite impressive when you bear in mind that it can be set at say 50mph and if a sharp incline appears the resulting gear change does not cancel out the cruise control. Often this is the case in many other vehicles.

Another safety feature is the Blind Spot Information System. There’s a little light on the inside of the wing mirror that glows red whenever a vehicle appears in the blind spot. This is useful because the design is prone to blind spots especially at the rear making it a little awkward to reverse but there are helpful sensors fitted that bleep to alert the driver of nearby obstacles.
