Is Roy on the Road to Rio?

England’s World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign comes to a close over the next few days and all eyes will be on Roy Hodgson’s men, whose tickets to Brazil are currently hanging in the balance. The Three Lions face Montenegro tonight and Poland on Tuesday and only two wins from those two fixtures will guarantee automatic qualification for next summer’s tournament. Both games will be played at Wembley, which is of course an advantage, but I can’t honestly say that I’m particularly confident about how this whole thing will turn out. Yes, England currently top what was never going to be an easy group and they are unbeaten in their previous eight group games, but the four games against their realistic qualification rivals ended in stalemate and the four wins were home and away victories against Moldova and international whipping-boys San Marino – so qualification is far from a certainty! Friday night’s action could go a long way to determining how important Tuesday’s game is though because 2nd place Ukraine take on Poland in 4th at 8pm before England play 3rd place Montenegro at 9pm so, if the early kick-off ends in a draw and England then claim victory, The Three Lions would only need a point from their game against Poland on Tuesday to qualify as group winners. The flip-side of the coin however is that if Ukraine beat Poland in Kiev (likely) and England only manage a draw with Montenegro (also likely), then Hodgson’s men would have to beat Poland in order to just finish second in the group and then negotiate the play-offs in order to reach the finals.....so I wouldn’t book your flights just yet lads! This Week in “The Lions”: Fri 11th Oct: Tue 15th Oct:

Azerbaijan v N. Ireland (6pm) Wales v Macedonia (8.45pm) England v Montenegro (9pm) Rep. Ireland v Kazakhstan (8.45pm) Belgium v Wales (9pm) Scotland v Croatia (9pm) England v Poland (9pm)

Run to the real Sun!

KOREA MAY have played host to the F1 this weekend, but Spain had the stock car racing event of the year dubbed ‘Run to the Real Sun’. It had it all – engines roaring, tyres screeching, t-boning, nudging, spinning and wheel-to-wheel racing. The marshals really had their work cut out for them and did Velocity proud, ensuring that no-one was hurt and that a fantastic night’s racing was had by all. Drivers from across the UK and Germany joined the men and women of Velocity to determine just who would become a European Champion and lift a coveted trophy. The tournament was split into three groups – two each for the rookie rods and one for the lightnings and each group competed in two heats and then a final. This was followed by a winner-takes-all, one-off race consisting of 20 laps around the Circuito Cartagena track -definitely not for the faint hearted! All in all, the crowd were entertained with three full hours of thrill-inducing and heart-stopping racing. Showing the boys how it should be done, Rookie driver Caroline Capel won the first heat, came third in the second and then went on to secure a convincing win in the final and earn herself a trophy. The visitors fared much better in the Rookies second round, with Mark Pope in number 654 proving exactly why he is the former Cornish Champion by winning not only the heat but also the final for this category earning a trophy to take back with him. The lightning rods title was a heavily contested battle between Nick Kelly in No. 48 and Dave Belcher in No.8. Nick had the better drive in the first heat and secured the win whilst Belchie came back with a win in the second. With a trophy up for grabs in the final, these two drivers went wheel-to-wheel for a full 20 laps, ending with Nick in first place and Belchie finishing second. Not content with that, Nick then went on to win the Euro all-comers title as well – is there no stopping him? Directions for the next race night on 19th October may be found at www.velocityracing.eu

Fishing Maggots End by

David Hoare 968 199 279

THIS WEEK was the annual ‘Jolly Boys outing’ down to Arcos de la Frontera for a week’s fishing festival. The fishing this year was not as prolific as last year with the top weight being only 70 kilos. However, everybody had plenty of fish during the week with the total weight caught being 2610 kilos (in round terms 2.5 tonnes). The week was not without its humorous moments, notably anglers having to go for a swim to get their poles back. Never relax for a moment as the fish seem to know! The best of the swimmers had to be Doug Hornblow - as soon as his pole was taken he dived from his box into the water and managed to retrieve it before it had gone a few yards! Other anglers said the water was not that cold but they had swum some 15-20 yards to retrieve their poles. The weather was not that kind to us as we got wet Monday and Tuesday. Winners of the Festival as follows: 1st: Ian Dalzell with 236.2 kilos 2nd: Doug Hornblow with 232.49 kilos 3rd: Lenny Bolton with 211.22 kilos

4th: Stan Roberts with 204.11 kilos 5th: Dave Hoare with 177.97 kilos PLEASE NOTE The club has some vacancies at present: if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 96 672 9293 or 603 535 771. ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS: Supplied by Terry Screen No match this week as the club was on the Jolly Boys outing. Anglers Together THE OBJECTIVE of Anglers Together was to introduce anglers to each other, who otherwise had no one to fish with or didn’t know where to fish. It was successful in bringing together many anglers who established friendships and which continue to this day. No meetings are held now but information is still available through our email address; anglerstogether@hotmail.co.uk.
