LITTLE MAXIMUS Houghton will never know his dad but will grow up at the centre of a bitter battle over his late father’s estate. David Houghton died suddenly aged just 40 four years ago. The Costa Blanca businessman left a will but the important document was written before the birth of his son. A larger-than-life character and former owner of Church Kitchens in Benissa, David left everything to a family friend and former secretary – and never changed his will despite meeting girlfriend Tanya Cojocar and starting a family together. Legal experts told RTN the emotional situation underlined exactly why expats should keep their final wishes current and a Spanish will updated. Max was aged one when he lost his father. He holds a British passport and lives with Tanya in Javea but not in David’s former home, the main asset being inherited by Carmen Alesanco. Both women are at loggerheads. Max’s mum said she needed money to provide properly for her son, Carmen maintaining she only wants to insure the best for the boy’s future – either through a monthly income or the sale of the villa on the upmarket urbanisation of Tosalet.

Tanya said Carmen helped organise David’s funeral and it was sometime before the will was discovered. “It was in her name and was written before he met me and before Max was born. TRUST “She said that I should not worry and to trust her because she knew David wanted everything for Max.” She said after David’s death she went back to her family in Moldavia with Max for a time but then returned to Javea. “David would not be happy if we lived in Moldavia and Carmen had the house – that is not normal. “It is very upsetting because she talked to me and asked me to trust her.” Tanya added:”She is not stealing from me but from a four-year-old child who could have a better education and a better future – he has already lost his father as a oneyear-old. “No-one can believe that David did not change his will and make sure Max was properly looked after, everyone says there must be another will.” Friends say negotiations have taken place between solicitors but up to now no solution has been found to the taxing problem. Balance of power by Jack Troughton TWO COUNCILLORS in a troubled Marina Alta town hold crucial votes as allies of the new Partido Popular controlled administration. In behind the scenes wheeling and dealing, Antonia Avargues and Carole Saunders agreed to form a pact with new Mayor Cesar Sanchez to give the PP a working majority in the corridors of power. They were the leading candidates in the Calp Independientes Los Verdes list, a new party standing in May’s elections, although Antonia has been an opposition councillor for eight years. Carole, who narrowly failed to win a seat four years ago, said there were many new faces in the team all hoping to bring fresh ideas to Calpe. “The PP got 10 seats in the election and they needed 11 for a majority, so they need at least one of our votes to put through changes,” she said. Carole is now in charge of Agenda 21 – the process to allow citizens a voice in the development of the community – and liaising with organisations such as Cartitas and EMAUS as they helped people in the town.

Plucky three year old sends sister’s abuser to prison

REWARD Antonia was rewarded with control of the economy, business and employment, as well as Calpe’s fiestas. And Carole said they had turned down the opportunity to share power with a PSOE controlled alliance because it would mean making a coalition with former PP members facing allegations of corruption: “I would rather boil in oil.” For many years an active campaigner for the environment, she added: “This is a very different PP we are supporting and yes, we will be putting forward a project for the salt lake, Las Salinas, and hopefully the Roman remains at the Queen’s Baths. “One big problem is there is no money and the town is very much in debt. However, the mayor has promised he will do his best to get financial support from Valencia.” Carole said they were promised the government would “start afresh” and give the town hall a “complete overhaul.” She added: “Antonia felt we can put our trust in that and obviously being in government we do have a say in what happens to the town.”

THE TESTIMONY of a three-year-old boy has led to evidence that convicted a paedophile for abusing and terrorising the child’s 11year-old sister over June and July of last year. The man worked in a family bar owned by the victim’s family. The little boy discovered indecent pictures of his sister on the offender’s mobile phone and ran to show them to his mother, who confronted the man. The accused fled and deleted the pictures but 117 images were retrieved by the Technological Research department of the Judicial Police, later used in evidence. The man’s defence this week included accusations of the photos being planted by the parents in order to blackmail him but the court refused to uphold his story.

Continued from front page Carmen told RTN that despite a war of words she was determined to take care of Max and make sure he had an income in future years and when the market allowed a share of the proceeds of the sales of the house. SAFE She said: “I would like to make sure Max gets money every month and I want to leave him in a safe financial position. “When it is the right time to sell the house I will make sure Max benefits from the sale. “I have absolutely nothing to hide – my concern (and on my solicitor’s advice) is that I want to make sure that Max gets something – I want to make sure that everyone does the right David and Max thing for his future. It is not an easy Houghton situation for me.”

Clive Webster, of Webster Asesores in Javea, said under Spanish law the bulk of an estate automatically went to the children but a British national was free to choose how to leave assets to whomever they wanted. He said all Spanish wills sworn before a notary in the area were kept for 25 years at the local offices, for a further 75 years at a central archive, and for another 100 years in Madrid. Clive said this allowed the vital documents to be checked to insure they reflected the last wishes of a deceased person and any substitution clauses that often allowed for the birth of additional children. He said it appeared in Max’s case the will might have to be contested in court. “It is so very important to have a will and to update it. These things happen, you cannot plan when you will die,” he added.

Brave new world by Jack Troughton

Women earning lower salaries: less if employed as medical staff

STATISTICS RELEASED on average wages earned in Spain in 2009 were released this week and revealed that the average salaries of workers on fixed term contracts were more than 30% lower than the earnings of permanently contracted staff. Further statistics showed that women earned significantly less than men,

taking home an average of only 78% of the average earnings of men performing the same role and in addition 15.2% of women earned below the minimum wage. Highest earners were in the utilities sector - employees of gas, electric and water companies: skilled and unskilled medical staff earned the lowest salaries.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE victim Jacqueline Burrell is heading back to Blighty and a new life with the best wishes of those who backed her speaking out about an abusive partner. She approached RTN with her story determined to help all those who suffer violence and abuse in relationships and too often pay the ultimate price and lose their lives. And her story was told across two front page articles after she was nearly strangled in front of her mother and father in 2009 – but her former partner went on the run after being found guilty of assault and still faces court action after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Jacqueline took time off packing before heading back to Surrey, said she was touched by the support she had received from across the world and locally cards and flowers. “It just takes one person to stand up and speak out against domestic violence and if that helps other victims it is all worth it,” she said. TERRIBLE “This is a very serious crime and if we do not put these things in the papers, on the radio and on television, how will anyone learn about these terrible things that are happening.” Despite suffering a campaign of physical and verbal abuse, Jacqueline still plans to holiday in the Marina Alta and visit her parents who retired to Spain. “I’m off back to Blighty but it is only two hours away and I will miss the weather, family and friends and the lifestyle,” said the beautician. She said she had a number of job interviews arranged. “It is

all very positive – I have a little guardian angel looking over me and these are exciting times and I know this is the right direction. “One door close and another opens – my life is now very much on a good path.” Jacqueline said she wanted to thank everyone for their support and helping her come to terms with the ordeal she suffered.

Spanish fruit farmers in despair in Callosa d’en Sarriá By Jan Gamm THE DEBACLE caused by inaccurate accusations that Spain was the source of the E-coli outbreak in Germany responsible for 30 deaths and several thousand cases of sickness has prompted a collapse in trade for

farmers whose main source of income relies upon the nispero crop (also known as ‘medlars’) Devastating losses for farmers in Callosa d’en Sarriá representing 70% GDP were instigated by a ban applied by Italian supermarket chains

Thousands of nisperos destroyed

Coop and Esselunga that stubbornly rejected the marketing of nisperos despite irrefutable proof that the infection was not sourced in Spain. Alejandro Galiana, president of the Cooperativa Agrícola de Callosa d’en Sarrià, said: “Even after it was known that Spanish products had nothing to do with the E-coli outbreak, Italian food retailers decided not to sell medlar this year.” Representatives travelled to Italy recently to restore confidence in Spanish produce but achieved little success with large food retail chains. COSTS Farmers fear that with the collapse of the export market for the fruit, it will be difficult to recover even harvesting costs. Much of the crop has been destroyed in order to qualify for meagre subsidies from the European Union. “The crisis struck at the worst possible time,” said Galiana, “…when all the fruit was picked and ready to sell.”

Port protest makes waves by Jack Troughton CRISIS TALKS are to be held in a bid to find a solution to tables and chairs being outlawed along the sea wall of a picturesque Marina Alta port. Hundreds of foreign residents and visitors demonstrated in Javea Port last Saturday calling for bars and restaurants once again to be allowed to offer a Shirley Valentine moment – eating and drinking by the sea wall and just metres from the sea. Madrid ordered the Avenida Marina Espanola to be cleared of illegal occupation by restaurants and bars under the Law of the Coasts, and Javea Town Hall is responsible for the enforcement of the law and protection of the coastline. However, many residents and visitors enjoy the al fresco experience and between 200 and 800 people took part in the peaceful protest last weekend to call for the tables, chairs and umbrellas to be immediately returned. Their stance is not universally supported. Many residents also enjoy the new ‘status

Distressed seagull rescue in Santa Pola LOCAL FIRE fighters and police in Santa Pola are being severely criticised for mobilising to rescue a seagull with its leg caught between metal bars atop a 20 metre disused crane on Wednesday. The regional fire service in Elche attended the incident and also police deployed a squad car and two officers to assist in the operation that entailed two firemen climbing the crane ladder to reach the gull that had been trapped for several hours. Unfortunately the seagull was pronounced dead at the scene.

quo’ and believe the law has been “continually flouted” by private enterprise over many years through “expansion and encroachment” onto the public space. Mayor Jose Chulvi will listen to all sides on Monday morning at the Town Hall and will hear from residents, the Port business association, restaurant and business owners directly affected. It is hoped a legal compromise can be found that is seen to be within the public interest after the outside furniture was removed in April. PETITION

Demo organiser Phil Harding said more than 700 people signed a petition calling for the tables and chairs to once again grace the sea wall. He said an international protest of residents and visitors had shown they “feel very strongly” about the situation and it was a little disappointing no council officials had witnessed the demonstration at first hand. Mayor Chulvi acknowledged protesters were trying to help the town’s fortunes and hoped Monday’s meeting

would be productive and find a legal solution. But he warned the town hall “has no authority to approve or disapprove“ of the occupation of the promenade once it had reached “its optimum usage” under the law. A statement from the local authority also said the placing of tables and chairs were “in some instances excessive and abusive”

Into the blue

by Jack Troughton PRIZED BLUE flags are flying over the beaches of Javea after the important Marina Alta resort was awarded the coveted accolade marking the quality of its waters. Mayor Jose Chulvi and town hall colleagues symbolically raised a flag at the Arenal Beach – the most popular swimming area – and already busy with holidaymakers. The beaches of La Grava and La Granadella also won the coveted Blue Flag status by the environmental body ADEAC as a guarantee of the excellence of the water, accessibility of services, safety and cleanliness over the whole area. Mr Chulvi said the award had a significant impact on the tourist sector and said he was committed to maintaining the distinction for the town’s beaches and offering visitors “good services and helping them fully enjoy the beaches.”

obstructing access to the sea by the general public. The town hall also said: “We must remember that although there is a group of people who are in favour of the occupation of public spaces, there is another large group of citizens who are totally against this and have asked for the strict application of the law.”

Councillors Oscar Anton, Antonio Miragali, Doris Courcelles, and Mayor Jose Chulvi

He said the Red Cross lifeguards were already in place and at the Arenal there was a special bathing point so the sea could be enjoyed by hundreds of disabled people over the season. The flags were officially presented to the town on Saturday by Valencia’s President Francisco Camps at a ceremony in the Hotel Bayren, Gandia.

Alicante’s bridge over troubled water by Jan Gamm THE CITY council in Alicante is facing accusations of discrimination and the violation of the human rights of disabled citizens over the newly constructed ‘Postiguet Gateway’. Despite costing in excess of 385,000€, it is claimed that the walkway is not suitable for use by the disabled. The Postiguet Gateway that affords access to the beach at Postiguet was officially opened by the minister for Infrastructure, Mario Flores, accompanied by Councillor Oti Garcia Pertusa last

Tuesday, although it had been in use for some time. ROBUST

The walkway features a ramp with a translucent skin made of plastic composites of resin and glass fibre with a lightened core cleverly designed by BGStudio. LED lighting at the base changes the colour tone of the structure and the design is applauded for being both contemporary and robust with a strong resistance to climatic erosion. The walkway is undoubtedly aesthetically pleasing. However, disabled

residents have slammed the new facility as being a waste of public funds as it is accessed only via stairs and therefore inaccessible to wheelchair users. Suzana Iñarra Abad, senior architect at BGStudio based in Valencia, spoke exclusively to RTN on the problems encountered by the handicapped when using the bridge: “Our early drawings for the bridge included elevator access and this may be seen clearly on plans which may be viewed on our website at www.bg-studio. com However, the elevator installation would be expensive due to technical complications and it was decided therefore that the bridge and the elevator would be contracted separately. Of course we bid for the work but unfortunately Alicante Council awarded the building project for the elevator to another company. DISAPPOINTED

Views of the bridge

“We were disappointed not to win the contract to build the elevator and also concerned that another contractor might not respect the aesthetic design of the bridge, but unfortunately the matter is now out of our hands. We were also concerned when the bridge was put into use without the elevator access. At election time and at the start of the summer season no doubt the council was anxious to put the bridge to practical use as soon as possible.” Llanos Rodriguez, a wheelchair user with 83% disability, has filed two complaints with the Ombudsman and with the city of Alicante.

Outsized bar at Denia Beach cause for complaint

denia Bar

A LARGE area of the beach north of the port at Denia has been sectioned off with excavation commencing to build a large bar complex covering at least 3,000 square meters of prime coastline. Local businesses are complaining to the press that the project is underway against a grant from the Port Authority that constitutes “unfair competition” for other local establishments as the construction is so large, occupying the entire beach area. They claim that a licence to build on such a large scale should never have been granted by the Directorate and demand that the project be reviewed.

Ryanair passengers in emergency slide drama RYANAIR PASSENGERS on a flight from Seville to Pisa in Italy this week were detained on the ground for more than three hours in temperatures reaching almost 50º following an incident on take-off where one of the passengers deployed the emergency evacuation slide. The flight had been delayed due to a technical problem that disabled the air conditioning system but as the aircraft was moved to a different position on the runway to await the attendance of engineers, the emergency door of the aircraft was opened and the evacuation slide deployed. After the delay unruly passengers were removed from the flight and those remaining were transferred to a replacement aircraft for departure to Pisa with Ryanair’s apologies. The police were called to attend to the passenger responsible for opening the emergency exit.

Shoppers fined for Spain’s ‘lost children’ investigation steps up in pace carrying bags in rear seats

DRIVERS HAVE complained to RTN that they have been stopped and spot-fined by the traffic police for carrying bags of shopping on the back seats of their vehicles. In Spain it is illegal to transport items such as shopping bags in passenger seats and drivers have been fined up to 130€ for the offence. Bags may be carried legally on the floor of the vehicle in the rear foot well but police recommend putting them in the boot. One driver, stopped and fined on the N332 on the outskirts of Javea said, “I genuinely didn’t know it was illegal. I think it might have been fairer to warn me and waive the fine but they insisted on an immediate payment of 130€.”

The investigation involves a sea of forged documentation

by Jan Gamm THE CHIEF prosecutor of the Provincial Court of Madrid, Eduardo Esteban, has indicated that doctors and nurses implicated in the disappearance of children from the forties right up until the nineties in Spain, are to be questioned “shortly.” The announcement was made this week prior to a meeting with the prosecutor of the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Madrid, Manuel Moix, with the nine prosecutors receiving statements from families that reported the theft of babies. In most cases the children were said

Arm severed in street brawl A YOUNG Dominican man aged 19 was admitted to La Paz Hospital in Madrid in the early hours of Friday morning having been involved in a street brawl in the Puente de Vallecas that resulted in his arm being amputated by a sword. Police attending the scene retrieved the severed limb and transported it to the hospital in a tray of ice they acquired from a nearby restaurant. The man was conscious on admission but his condition was described as “grave” as he had suffered a serious loss of blood.

Child strangled by mother A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy died in Torrejón de Ardoz on Saturday after allegedly being strangled by his 38-year-old mother at the family home. Emergency services arrived at the scene to find the child in cardiac arrest as a result of suffocation: he died shortly afterward. Later the woman attempted suicide by cutting her wrists and throat with a knife and was taken in a serious condition to the ICU unit at the Hospital Príncipe de Asturias de Alcalá de Henares. According to a police spokesman, the woman is separated from her husband. It is not known whether she suffers from mental illness.

to have “died”, although no satisfactory evidence of death was produced. The investigation probes an alleged baby-trade that lasted for decades throughout Franco’s term of governance and involved hospital staff in collusion with the Roman Catholic Church and Church-run children’s homes, in a programme that removed children from their parents to place them with childless couples, not only in Spain but internationally, some now discovered to be living in other parts of Europe and also in the United States. Some medical staff to be questioned, including many nuns, are employed today in hospitals

and clinics all over Spain. The countrywide conspiracy involved the falsification of documentation such as birth certificates and death certificates and ‘adopters’ indulging in ‘fake’ pregnancies; false registration and covert payment systems to shroud a corrupt and large scale human trafficking ring. All the prosecutors involved find the cases sensitive and difficult to research due to the length of time that has passed and the lack of reliable documentation to constitute evidence of wrong doing. Those proved to be implicated could face charges of abduction, kidnapping, forgery and illegal detention.

Safety issues a priority for rail networks

RAIL COMPANIES have issued a public warning to rail users to exercise care and cross tracks safely wherever possible. Passengers have been involved in a number of recent incidents, some serious, that included crossing while using headphones or mobile phones and without even troubling to check for oncoming trains. Many elderly passengers cross the tracks with shopping trolleys and young mothers with babies in buggies balance pram wheels on a tilt while negotiating the narrow sleepers. Rail network managers pointed out that many train drivers leave their jobs with psychological disorders following fatal incidents.

Fast Track your way to a healthier future! GIVING UP smoking is one of the most important decisions that a smoker has to make and when they commit themselves to staying off they may encounter many difficulties. This is where Fast Track Hypnosis and Laser Therapy can greatly increase the success of the non-smoker to stay away from cigarettes for good. So why don’t more smokers quit on their own? Many can quit, but few stay off cigarettes for long. The average smoker has normally tried different approaches but because of the addiction to nicotine and the habitual part of it as well, a person will start to smoke again. Don’t smokers understand that by smoking they are causing problems to their health? In actual fact they do, since it is highlighted everywhere in the media about the risks of smoking, but the fear of withdrawal keeps them from stopping and are afraid of failing. It’s well known that smoking causes damage to the body, even light smoking can cause lung problems. SOCIAL ATTITUDES TOWARDS SMOKING ARE CHANGING Social attitudes towards smoking have changed quite dramatically in the last few years and smoking is unpopular in today’s society. Even governments

and companies are taking an extremely strong stance about smoking and have banned it in work places and even outside municipal premises. WHICH TREATMENT IS THE RIGHT ONE FOR ME?

There are many ways for a person to stop smoking, ranging from going cold turkey, patches, acupuncture, gum etc. Every person is different and not everyone wants to wait a long time to quit smoking by going for a series of sessions or gradually reducing with the help of gum. With Fast Track Hypnosis and Laser Therapy they will quit without having to go through the long drawn out process of quitting as all this is achieved in ONE 30 minute session. HAS YOUR FAST TRACK WAY BEEN PROVEN TO WORK? The Fast Track Hypnosis and Laser Therapy Stop Smoking in under 30 minutes system was created by me in the early 1990,s. I put my reputation on the line and it was put to the test on two consumer programmes and on both occasions it was proven to be successful. In fact on one of the programmes it was tested against acupuncture, and another medical product and the only one to successfully quit was the candidate who came to me.

“Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little.” (New Scientist, Vol 136 issue 1845 31Oct 92, pg 6) Results included 48 studies of hypnosis covering 6000 smokers, were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology which clearly showed that hypnosis was three times more effective than nicotine replacement therapy The beauty of Fast Track Hypnosis and Laser Therapy put together in this unique combination removes this feeling of deprivation. It removes the need and the urge to smoke and increases the success rate even further. So why opt for one type of therapy to quit smoking when you can now have two highly successful methods in a unique combination at no extra cost! “Alan, I just wanted to thank you. I am amazed by how easy it has been. I have not had one craving, I feel so much happier and healthier. This has completely changed my life. I am a more positive person and everyone is commenting on how much more relaxed I am. I even had someone tell me my eyes look much brighter! I have recommended you to so many people. My director in work went to you last week to stop smoking too and is also finding it easy and my mum went

to see you on Friday for weight loss. My dad, brother and sister in law are all going to make appointments with you to stop smoking so you will be kept busy! Thank you again. I can’t believe how fantastic I feel and am amazed I have not had one single craving even when drinking alcohol. I will be forever grateful to you and will continue my mission on spreading the word on how fantastic you are! ... M” Alan holds his Fast Track Hypnosis sessions in Cabo Roig, Guardamar and Benidorm.

We just want him home On the morning of Thursday 16th June our home in San Miguel was burgled, and while a number of valuable items was taken, our most priceless was our beloved Tetley, our African grey parrot. He is more like a family member than a pet, very loving and talkative: he would shout “Cup of tea for Tetley!” as he enjoyed a cup of tea and toast with us in the morning… He is greatly missed and we just want him home where he belongs. I am writing this in hope that either someone as seen him or knows of him being sold on? If any of your readers have any information, however insignificant, we would appreciate hearing from them. There is a reward offered for Tetley’s safe return. PLEASE help Paul (San Miguel): Telephone 696 908 327 or Chloe 603 101 244

Irish Blarney PLEASE CONTINUE with the reports of the ‘Ryanair Saga’ as the letter from Stephen McNamara, Head of Communications for Ryanair in RTN’s issue of 17th June was the best example of Irish Blarney I have read for a long time! The main problem is that Michael O’Leary, the Chief Executive and owner of Ryanair, is obsessed with maintaining his 25 minutes turnaround time and has no consideration for the ease or comfort of the passengers in boarding his planes anywhere in Europe.

Long may the saga last...! James Wright

poor delivery of mail SOMETHING WILL have to be done about the poor delivery of mail in the Costa Blanca area. In issue 607 a letter was printed from Mr Jack Johnson which had obviously been posted in the late 19th Century. Surely a letter from as close as Finestrat should arrive more quickly? It does however bring a little variety to your letters page. Can we now anticipate letters in the same vein, perhaps complaining of the unhygienic thumbscrews used by dirty Tory landlords on their tenants, or exhortations to vote for Kier Hardy? On second thoughts I withdraw my opening stricture – where can you get a better laugh than by reading of the misguided prejudices of yesteryear? P Henham

Cannot so easily forgive I WOULD like to comment on the article written by Jan Gamm in your edition of 17/6. I know the ‘unfortunate victim’ (I quote) personally and am absolutely appalled at the tone of this article. The author is asking us to feel sympathy for this family and their delinquent son Jamie, currently in prison pending trial. We have to ask what kind of upbringing this lad had to get involved in something like this. What normal youth turns to crime especially something as vicious as this? Even if Jamie did not have actually take part in the vicious beating, he was still part of the gang that broke in with intent to rob an innocent, gentle woman who lived alone. He knew exactly what was going on and it appears did nothing to stop it. We have to ask ourselves that if he was such a good lad, what happened to his conscience, why didn’t he call the police anonymously, later on, to make sure she was found and given emergency treatment and not left to die? Clearly he had no conscience and no morals, he

simply did nothing; it was only by good fortune she was found next morning still alive or he would have been tried for taking part in a murder. Her injuries were so severe that they could not be treated locally, she was taken to hospital in Valencia where she needed many operations and reconstruction surgery to repair the horrific head and body injuries caused by this vicious and uncalled for attack. She may never recover fully and I am sure suffers from the mental trauma as well as physical pain. Let us be clear: this gang of youths left her for dead - it is a miracle she not only survived but typically, fought back to health holding no grudges against her aggressors – quite the opposite, she is totally forgiving. I, among many others, cannot so easily forgive and hope that this youth is found guilty and receives the maximum sentence possible to fit the vicious crime in which he was a willing participant. Couldn’t agree more!

I COULDN’T agree more with W McHaffie (put it down to experience…) I have lived here for over 20 years and have seen the restaurants go downhill. In most the food is worse than I cook at home and the prices have gone over the top.

There are, however, two restaurants that I would recommend: Tres Besos in Grand Alacant, and El Riu on the old road to Guadalest - we (touch wood) never had a bad meal in either and the price is reasonable. As for the Chinese: we have gone right off them

since a Chinese lorry stopped at the border was discovered to be full of dogs - one can only wonder what they were destined for - I hardly think it was for pets! Even pub grub in the UK is now better value for money. JM Moor

Can anyone explain this THE NEW Orihuela Town Hall coalition has promised that: “Every parish will be able to democratically elect their own Mayor.” So why is it then that the day after taking office, Antonia Moreno, the leader of the PSOE (and whose party repeatedly condemned Monica Lorente and her PP party for the manner in which she appointed me) confirmed that the headmen (Mayors) for the districts of El Escorratel and La Aparecida have been named as Patricio Robles and Francisco Illescas and in turn has bypassed any form of promised democratic vote? Is this also an indication of what will happen here at Entre Naranjos? I need someone much cleverer than me to explain how this is more democratic? John Reynolds ex-Alcalde Pedaneo Entre Naranjos

Very concerned for these poor animals I HAVE sent a copy of this letter via email to the Environmental Health Department at the Pilar Town Hall. We have not only been troubled by constant barking from three dogs at El Mojon but are also very concerned about their welfare and as we are not aware of any organisation such as the RSPCA in Spain, we are at a loss to try to improve matters for the dogs. The neighbour is extremely aggressive

both to us, our neighbours; our friend (who speaks good Spanish) and even to the Local Police when we had occasion to call them when the dogs were left without food and water for a protracted period. Your assistance would be appreciated in highlighting the plight of these unfortunate animals. Elizabeth Allen Lyle Abbott

Benidorm lights its fire again by Jan Gamm BENIDORM WAS one of dozens of Costa Blanca towns that returned this week to hosting traditional bonfires on its beaches during one of the favourite fiestas on the Spanish calendar, the Festival of San Juan, where party-goers jump over the fires to bring good fortune and health and to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness. The beach fires, along with residents’ party spirit, were effectively extinguished by bans put in place for the past two years in the interests of ‘beach cleanliness’. Municipal sources announced on Wednesday that controlled fires would be lit at twelve locations but with limitations placed on certain areas. RESTRICTIONS Cautious restrictions were also placed on indis-

criminate camp fires, allowed only when using council-approved containers and within regulations of beach inspectors, from 11pm until 12.30pm and to be extinguished efficiently, with the beach returned to perfect condition. Finally the police, fire service and ambulance services were put on standby for the duration of the festivities. The idea is to embrace the elements of fire, sun and water. Legend has it that the bonfires burned during the San Juan festivities contain special powers to expel diseases of body and soul, ranging from teenage acne to clinical depression, by jumping over the fire three times. Participants usually wade into the sea after their firejumping activities and some of the younger and more skilled contenders display some impressive skills, clearing the fires by several feet.

Success is child’s play by Jack Troughton SUCCESS FOR the six-month-old Mums and Tots Club in Jalon has prompted a charity to back more community-based projects. Founded by Jalon Valley HELP, the weekly club has grown quickly and mothers are bringing children from the Val de Pop and further afield – including Calpe, Javea, Benitachell, and Teulada. Meeting every Monday at Jalon Town Hall between 10.15am and noon, the club is a place for mums to meet for a chat and a cuppa while the children play together. And the cost has been deliberately kept low – just 1€ per adult – encouraging not just mums but aunts and grandparents to arrive with their little ones.

Frances Barrett, HELP’s publicity officer, said there was a wide selection of toys to enjoy and musical instruments which were played by everyone when they joined the singing and musical games that closed each session, many provided by the charity. “There are German, Chinese, Spanish, Dutch and British children all playing happily together,” she said. “And our President Rhonda Ryan said on behalf of the HELP committee the charity was keen to encourage the development of new community initiatives within the valley and the Mums and Tots Club should be congratulated for leading the way.” For more information visit Mums and Tots Club www.jalonvalleyhelp.com

EMAUS shopping list THE CHARITY Shop of Calpe donated 2,150€ to the town’s EMAUS children’s home allowing the charity to buy a range of essentials needed to help care for its young residents. The cash has been used to purchase new furniture for each of the bedrooms, kitchen equipment and various other necessities. John Bridge, the charity shop president, is pictured handing a cheque to Patricia, the senior social worked responsible for the Calpe home.

Eric Taylor with two Guardian Angels: Chairman Tricia Barr and ViceChairman Tamsin German

ON MONDAY 6th June, Heat Gold FM Studio in Moraira was visited by two Guardian Angels: Chairman Tricia Barr and Tamsin German (vice chairman), for an interview with Eric Taylor on his Afternoon Show. The Guardian Angels Association, founded in the Costa Blanca last year, helps and supports single parents and their children. One year on, the organisation is flying, with lots of single parent families registered and wonderful helpers such as counsellors, solicitors, therapists, coaches, exercise instructors and many more supporting ‘in the wings’. Tricia said: “Like any new ‘business’ it takes time to grow and become known, but many people are now familiar with the name and what we are achieving.

We always need volunteers to help, so if you would like to join the committee as a minute-taker, or if you can help our single parents with odd jobs please get in touch.” Guardian Angels currently have only female members but would welcome and support any men left ‘holding the baby’. Men can sometimes hide behind their pride, but really need as much help as women do. Now Guardian Angels are established in the Oliva to Calpe areas, they plan to roll out the model to the south. If you would like to run a group in your area, contact Tricia on 622 795 542 or email tricia@guardian-angels.es More information about fun days, events, service providers and workshops visit www.guardian-angels.es

Milk shakes up consumer group OCU by Jan Gamm MANY EX-PATS adjusting to daily life in Spain make an effort to adapt to the Spanish housewife’s choice – UHT milk - initially finding the taste somewhat alien but eventually developing a preference for the UHT version instead of fresh milk that tends to spoil after a day or two. This week, however, Spanish UHT milk is in the firing line, with no less than ten major brands being slammed by consumer group OCU as “without nutrition.” CRITICISM The comments of OCU sparked stern criticism from the Environment Ministry that backed the dairy industry, according to OCU: “…without taking into consideration the depth of rigorous scientific study undertaken.” The OCU pointed out that it had not suggested the brands of UHT milk in question were “unsafe”, merely that they were “…of poor quality.” The consumer group also took issue with the milk producing companies in question, saying they were obviously more concerned with defending

UHT milk criticised

their reputation than with improving the quality of their product… The study undertaken reveals that the standard of UHT milk today is significantly lower than it was ten years ago. For full results on OCU’s research visit www.ocu.org/leche/

The Air Force lands at San Javier AN EMERGENCY landing involving a Spanish Air Force instruction aircraft at San Javier Airport in Murcia on Monday forced three scheduled flights from Madrid, Leeds and Manchester to be diverted to El Altet in Alicante. A C-101 of the General Air Academy veered off the runway with a burst tyre, piloted by a student under the instruction of a third year Lieutenant: both emerged from the aircraft unharmed although shaken. The 50 diverted passengers destined for Murcia were transported by taxi from El Altet. The Air Ministry is to conduct an investigation into the incident.

Las Aventuras de Sid en España

Sid has just arrived in Spain to start his new life. Here he is taking his first taxi ride from the airport and taking in the sights and impressions of that road we all know so well. No doubt some of us had the same imSpanish pressions the first time we travelled along it.

lessons by

Jane Cronin

As Sid’s taxi sped along the road, he felt as though

A weekly ‘cut out and keep’ feature helping you he was in a dream, flying through the air. There were to learn basic Spanish so many different sights and sounds to take in that for everyday needs he could hardly catch his breath. He couldn’t believe

part 3

how the traffic around him seemed to weave in and out from one lane to another without crashing. Back home in Yorkshire Sid only drove his car once a week to visit his sister for Sunday lunch and then take her out for a ride through the dales. He couldn’t really imagine himself driving here in Spain, although he knew it was one of things he would have to do. As the road straightened out and the airport was left behind, they drove through a beautiful area of lakes whose waters almost lapped against the road side. The lakes had a mysterious air with reeds and wild birds and a quaint ruined stone tower. To his surprise Sid noticed a beautiful flock of flamingos standing nonchalantly in full view of the road. There was a small group of people walking along one of the embank-

ments dividing the lakes armed with binoculars and rucksacks and Sid made a mental note to find out more about bird watching activities once he was settled. At the other side of the road Sid’s attention was suddenly caught by a huge fluorescent sign in the shape of a lightly clad female. Sid gaped at it as the taxi drew closer and he saw it was fixed to a low brick building painted in garish colours with a canopied entrance and some rather expen¬sive cars parked nearby. Sid was not sure exactly what this building was, although he noticed that the line of windows at the side each had its own small air-conditioning unit. “It must get very hot in there” he thought.

Coming for a beer, dad? Watts In Britain By

Paul Watts DID YOU remember to get your dad a card and a present for Father’s Day last Sunday? Uh oh, you didn’t? Well, don’t worry too much because as one journalist claims it’s all a big ploy to relive you of money by a certain greeting cards manufacturer. And in any case, Father’s Day is celebrated in Spain on 19th March so you’ve already missed it – by several months. “Father’s Day was invented by Hallmark and blessed by Richard Nixon,” thunders Gill Hornby in the Daily Telegraph. “In the third week of June 1972,” Gill says, “Richard Milhous Nixon [ex-President of the World] committed an injustice with which the Western world is still struggling.” Was it the Watergate break-in Gill? That’s what I was thinking but no, think again. What annoys Gill is that on that day the President brought the American nation together “…by making Father’s Day a public holiday.” She contends, “For this high crime and misdemeanour, his name should live on in the annals of infamy.” Crickey, she is rattled, isn’t she? “It’s just like Halloween,” Gill fumes, “another American import. One year we’re marking it with a quick ghost story before bed, the next it’s a national drama involving all major shops and food outlets.” Well, okay I’d have to agree with her there, especially as it’s elbowing Firework Night away from our affections. But what has clearly gotten Gill’s craw about Father’s Day was that, “The American business press cheerfully predicted that last weekend was ‘recession proof’.” She moans: “$11 billion will be wasted on Father’s Day ‘tat’.” She querulously asks, “So why wouldn’t British retailers want us to do the same?” Hmmm, well I guess they do Gill and judging by the number of pubs that ‘hiked’ their prices for the special day, everyone who can is merrily at it! Even some enterprising kids I saw in Tamworth were advertising ‘a Father’s Day car wash for a tenner’.

But Gill, did you know that the idea for it took off long before Tricky Dickie? Here’s the history: It came to one Sonara Louise Smart Dodd during a church sermon on Mothering Sunday back in 1909. Dodd felt that sons and daughters should do something similar to Mother’s Day for their fathers and originally wanted the date “to coincide with the anniversary of the death of her father.” However, this could not be arranged and organisers chose the 3rd Sunday in June (Sunday 19th June 1910) instead. The event took off locally. It was helped a few years later, in 1916, when “this Father’s Day celebration” met with the approval of US President Woodrow Wilson. Fast forward to 1966 and President Lyndon Johnson (aka LBJ) signed a presidential proclamation marking the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day in America (Britain and Canada have it then too). A law was signed in 1972 by President Richard Tricky-boy Nixon that cemented Father’s Day forever as a permanent celebration. Didn’t he have shares in Hallmark Gill, or was that just an ugly rumour? Father’s Days have of course, and much to the delight of worldwide retailers, caught on everywhere else. Australia and New Zealand celebrate it on the first Sunday of September whilst, as noted above, you folks down there on the Costa Blanca celebrate it on 19th March - along, funny enough, with your Belgium cousins. Sweden celebrates Father’s Day every second Sunday in November. And I’m sure most other countries slot it into the calendar somewhere. Now I don’t know about you but I’m quite game for a bit of Father’s Day ‘tat’; what’s the harm in it, Gill? I reckon Gill Hornby is probably an inveterate sour-puss anyway. And generally speaking, we dads are not that demanding. If you can’t afford tat – no worries, most of us would opt for being taken for a beer any day! I suppose the sensible thing to do, is celebrate your dad, and your mum, all the time you possibly can - every single day of the year. And that would at least stop Gill Hornby from carping on about spending money on tat! Watts in Britain; thanks for the ta... treats kids xxx

Cat possible cause of ringworm in school A VIRULENT outbreak of ringworm has spread through a school in Madrid affecting 11 children and two teachers, according to the city health service. The school has not been evacuated and parents are advised to send their children to school as usual but each day more children are found to be afflicted with the fungal infection that presents as ringed patches of red hives that can itch and weep when scratched. Authorities are investing allegations that the infection is being carried by a cat, a pet of one of the students.

Peris Exhibition at the Market Tram Station Valencia THE MINISTER for Infrastructure, Mario Flores, opened an exhibition of works by renowned Valencian artist Vicente Peris this week at the Market Tram Station in Valencia. The exhibition, entitled ‘Transparent Shadow’ features the artist’s unique ‘blast technique’ where dancers pose in shadow over a canvas, allowing the artist to capture their form with special paint before coating the images with gunpowder and igniting the shadows without burning the canvas: the result is a rare combination of colour and texture.

Sahrawi children’s holiday programme in danger of collapse

Sahrawi children arriving at El Altet last summer

by Jan Gamm THE HIGHLY regarded Commitment Sahara NGO programme that arranges annual holidays for Sahrawi children that stay with host families during the summer is under threat with many participants withdrawing their support due to financial difficulties in the economic crisis. Some have lost their jobs and on a limited income feel they are no longer able to support an extra child through the summer months. Conditions at home for Sahrawi children are harsh during the summer months when temperatures reach a blistering 50ºC. The

Commitment Sahara NGO (Non-Government Organisation) pioneered the holiday placement programme to allow the children some respite from hardship for a two month period over the hottest part of the summer. The organisers of the holiday programme are therefore appealing through the press and social networks for new host families to come forward. Anyone interested in volunteering to accommodate a Sahrawi child aged between 8 and 12 years from 5th July through to 4th September should contact the Commitment Sahara programme at vacancesenpau@yahoo.es or visit www.sahara-libre.es/

Burning scrub escalates to large scale blaze A FIRE swept through fields and orchards in Benimira Callosa de Segura on Saturday when a scrub-burning exercise spread to nearby lemon trees and quickly became out of control. 45 people were evacuated from their homes as a cautionary measure and as the wind changed direction throughout the afternoon Orihuela fire fighters assisted by a helicopter worked for more than five hours to put out the flames. Nobody was injured in the incident.

New family member at the Easy Horse Care Centre AFTER THE happy birth of Harry Trotter, the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre family now has another new arrival. Tommy the two-and-a-half-year-old miniature horse is the centre’s newest arrival, saved by Patricia Lea in Sempere in Gandia. However, this happy story was not without its perils - in saving little Tommy, Patricia herself, a pensioner, paid 250€ to save the horses life. Patricia thought that this horse would be on her daughter’s patio for one or two days, but because of problems due to Tommy’s micro chip being traced to the Murcia region, this caused a complication in Tommy, the taking the miniature horse to the Rescue Centre. newest After a lot of hard work and persistence, Sue and Rod Weeding addition took the four hour drive to collect little Tommy and he is now a to the happy resident at the centre with many girlfriends. family

Japanese Style Siestas JAPANESE WORKERS encouraged to adopt Spanish-style siestas; Spanish banks offering high rates; free iPads and TVs; 50,000 protest againt spending cuts in Barcelona; 15-M Movement protests peacefully across Spain; Spain’s road deaths drop a record rate; passenger volume at Málaga Airport expected to reach 13 million this year; Government’s Royal Decree moves wage legislation closer to the employers wishes; BBC iPlayer to be launched in western Europe and Romanian migrants send home £500,000 each day from the UK. A somewhat mixed bag headline-wise this week, although pride of place has to go the fact that Civil servants in Japan are being ‘taught’ how to take a siesta, in a bid to cut down on electricity consumption following the nuclear disaster in March. In addition business dress will no longer be compulsory during the summer months, since wearing light clothing means less use of air-conditioning. I would like to say something witty or sarcastic but I can’t …it makes total sense to me, even the bit about being ‘taught’ to take a siesta as trust me it can take some adapting to and getting used to when you first start living in Spain. You would have thought that the Spanish government had bigger issues on its mind at the moment than to worry about the ‘competition war’ that has broken out amongst the Spanish banks who are offering an array of gifts to lure customers to transfer their accounts: an iPad at Banesto, a flat-screen TV at Caixa, a video game console at Santander and a Blu-ray player at Caja Madrid. Seems that they are concerned about the damage it may cause to the bottom line of the banks in Spain, adding to their already fragile state. There is some logic to their concerns, but I am sure they have bigger issues to deal with! If they are stuck for ideas, though, maybe they could look at the 50,000 people in Barcelona that joined the nationwide protest against spending cuts, unemployment and government corruption; or the 200,000 marching against the so-called ‘Euro Pact’ and the handling of the economic crisis. When a Spaniard gives up their Sunday Paella to go on a protest march you know they are serious! More evidence that we can expect the 110kph speed limit to remain in force as between January and May, 561 people died in accidents on Spanish roads, which compares to 620 last year. The decrease in fatal accidents at 9.5 per cent was even bigger than in

2010, which saw an overall drop of 9.1 per cent on the previous year and for the first time on record, the Easter period saw road deaths fall below 40. Remember I mentioned the other week that Málaga Airport was re-branding to Málaga – Costa del Sol, and what a waste of time and money it was? Well check out this headline: passenger volume at Málaga Airport is expected to reach 13 million this year: one million more than in 2010. Note: Málaga Airport NOT Málaga – Costa del Sol, which begs the obvious question that if it is growing so well with its current name why change it? I rest my case My Lord! The Government has approved the Royal Decree on collective negotiation of the wage round in cabinet with the main item of note being that companies in financial difficulties will be able to impose their wishes in the wage round over provincial agreements. Companies will be able to reduce their workforce if they think they face temporary or permanent losses. What makes this interesting is that for a Socialist government to move away from the side of the Unions and to the side of the employers is going to be a huge debating point in the next general election. AND TO CLOSE THIS WEEK, TWO QUICK STORIES FROM THE UK: I suspect that many an expat living in Spain will be excited to hear that an international version of the BBC’s iPlayer service is set to be launched later this year. Initially though it will be for the iPad and will focus on older archived material not the latest soaps that you miss so much! Did you know that Romanians living in Britain send home nearly £500,000 every day! Last year alone, the Romanian economy was boosted by £2.5billion sent from abroad. Good on them I say - chances are they are doing jobs the Brits don’t want to do, saving their money, and putting their family ahead of personal gratification. Spanish farmers back in business with Russia THE EUROPEAN Commission has announced that the veto imposed by Russia on vegetables produced within the European Union since the beginning of the outbreak of ‘E-coli’ has now been lifted after assurances and certificates on food safety were issued by Brussels. Paperwork issued includes guarantees that there are no traces of the O104 strain of E-coli in exports to Russia. Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and Spain resume trading with Russia this week. The E-coli outbreak was responsible for 29 deaths in Germany and one is Sweden.

Publishack fulfills Google page 1 promise… and more: A case study MANY READERS will have seen design and print agency Publishack’s latest ad – their boldest yet: they claim they’ll put your website on page one of Google or give you your money back! We asked Publishack’s SEO expert Simon Tebbenham why being on Google Page one is a big deal: “Many businesses in Spain face the same story. The market is relatively small so it’s not feasible to spend thousands competing for keywords. It is necessary to focus on niche keyword targets.” He explained: “For example, the term ‘car rental’ is competitive, but if you knew that the exact search ‘car rental Spain’ was searched 6,000 times a month (which it is), and the top spot claimed at least half of those visitors (it does), with the other 3,000 shared amongst the rest of the first page, wouldn’t you want to ensure you’re up there? “Google Page one still sees a share of hundreds of targeted visitors EVERY month. The more specific your search, the easier it is

to rank page one for search engines. If you don’t make it to page one, you simply don’t get a look in. But it makes no sense to be ‘Google number one’ for a search term that nobody uses - this is where Publishack’s free report will show you the search terms most relevant and the ones most likely to result in new business.” One of RTN’s longest standing advertisers, Woodtech Spain, decided to put his page in the hands of Publishack to see what they could do. The results were impressive. A few weeks ago Woodtech’s website didn’t rank in the first ten pages of Google for any of the recommended keywords. Currently, 68 of the 70 recommended keyword combinations rank in Google.es top ten, 47 currently at position one! “I am very impressed with the results achieved,” said Woodtech owner Charlie Caffarena. “They even made a 30-second promotional video for YouTube which also comes up in the search engines as well as my site. Google.es ‘woodworm treatment costa blanca’ and the results speak for themselves! Then Google keywords for your own business - see if the results are what you’d like them to be!” A pleased-looking Simon said: “It works and

we can prove it does, that’s why we offer the free analysis report in which we can SHOW businesses what we can do before we do it. Businesses in Spain are actually in a great position because it’s so much easier to get their business to show in the search engines in such a small community. Many businesses can’t expect thousands of visitors because there simply aren’t thousands of people every

month searching but even a few hundred visitors per month that are extremely targeted is an incredibly significant amount of potential for enquiries and sales.” For your free analysis report email Publishack at info@publishack.com for an interesting and in-depth report with no obligation – once you see the report they’re confident you’ll want in on the Google action!

Debt Collection: Incomes that cannot be seized by

Carlos Baos

of White & Baos Abogados English & Spanish Solicitors

DEAR Sirs, I live on a small retirement pension in a rented apartment. I have a debt that I am not able to pay at this time and my creditor has warned me that he will take from me everything I own including my pension. Is this true? Can he actually do this? Dear reader, thank you for your question. In reference to your situation you should know that in accordance with the Civil Procedure Law (LEC) in Spain not all properties, pensions or wages can be seized or charged. Firstly this Law (LEC) states that some assets / goods are absolutely indefeasible or unattachable, such as those that have been declared nonforfeitable which tend to be those assets / goods that have no ‘patrimonial value’. This Law also sets out some of the assets / goods belonging to a judgement debtor (respondent in the execution of a Court Order process) that cannot be seized or charged, e.g. 1. Furniture and household utensils (which are a necessity) food, fuel and other essentials. 2. Books and any other tools needed by the

debtor in order for him to be able to develop his profession, occupation etc. In relation to your PENSION this Law provides in its Article No. 607 that the PENSION cannot be seized as long as it does not exceed the Guaranteed Minimum Wage (Salario Minimo Interprofesional or SMI) set by the Spanish authorities yearly. For this year (2011) it has been set at 641.40€ per month. If the pension that you receive is higher than the Guaranteed Minimum Wages (SMI) then it could be progressively seized as follows: 1. The share of your income between the basic SMI amount and the double (2SMI): it would be charged up to 30% 2. The share between 2SMI and 3SMI would be charged up to 50%. 3. The share between 3SMI and 4SMI would be charged up to 60%. 4. The share between 4SMI and 5SMI would be charged up to 75%. 5. Any share exceeding 5 times the Guaranteed Minimum Wages will be charged at 90%. These amounts could also be increased in certain cases provided by Law. It must also be taken into consideration that the limits on pension and salary seizure are not applicable when the debt is a consequence of the breach of a Maintenance Court Order, as in that case the wages or pension could be charged regardless of the amount of the pension, as long

as the debt is due to an unpaid maintenance to children, spouse, etc. The information provided on this article is not intended to be legal advice, but merely conveys general information related to legal issues. Read the small print by

Suzanne O’Connell Customer Care at Ábaco

HOW MANY times have you signed a document without reading the small print? Once, twice, ten times a hundred? I have to confess that I definitely come into the hundred bracket and suspect I’m not alone. We know how important small print is and yet blithely go ahead and sign our lives away without a second thought. Why? Well, it’s usually a mixture of laziness, embarrassment and the need for speed. Laziness, because who wants to read through thousands of words and clauses about what’s covered/ not covered and what will happen if… Embarrassment when you are standing in a shop and the smiling sales person offers you the pen – you don’t want to hesitate do you? After all, hesitation might just imply that you don’t trust this lovely lady/ charming man. Speed – if there’s a queue behind you, you can hear the ‘tuts’ emanating from all those people who are obviously skimming and

scanning experts and have only five minutes left until the end of their lunch break. There are other reasons too. Size of print for one and not understanding the language the other. Language barriers are a very understandable reason for not reading the small print. The will might be there, even the time, but you are hardly likely to persevere through pages and pages of font 8 translations with your Letts Spanish dictionary. Particularly if the content is to do with tax, for example. The resident tax declaration may not be small print exactly but it is just as undecipherable to the majority of people who have one submitted in their name. Anything from 15 pages upwards, the Modelo 100 goes on and on and on… So why bother trying to understand it? The fact remains that most people don’t. They are quite happy to sign and submit without having a clue what it says or why they’ve more or less to pay.

In many circumstances that might not be a problem, but it can cause confusion and misunderstanding and, of course, mistakes. For example, many people were baffled this year as they had to pay more tax following the removal of the additional government allowance of €400. The confusion came from not really understanding their tax form in the first place. As part of your fiscal representation service you should receive a full explanation of your tax declaration. Many people haven’t a clue what they’ve signed and are anxious about its accuracy. Because of this Ábaco are offering a free consultation to anyone who would like their resident tax return explained. So, if you can’t read the small print, there’s no excuse – we’ll do it for you. Stephen Ward & Robert Burns OVER THE last couple of years we and others have written numerous articles about the ability of non-UK residents in particular to transfer their UK pension rights to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS), and of the benefits of so doing. Over that period we have now arranged over 2,000 pension transfers. The purpose of this short series of articles is to give you a brief overview of the main QROPS jurisdictions, how they work and which particular type of client or pension transfer they seem to suit best. We must also not overlook the alternative of the UK based Self Invested Personal Pension Scheme. It would not be right to consider a SIPP as just being a poor relation to a QROPS as there are numerous instances where a SIPP solution is more appropriate, for example, where an individual has only just moved overseas and if there is a considerable degree of uncertainty as to whether or not they will remain overseas or move back to the United Kingdom. In this article we will consider Guernsey as a jurisdiction for QROPS: There is no doubt that Guernsey with its plethora of businesses well used to arranging offshore trusts gave itself a huge and early advantage in the overseas pension market by allowing non-Guernsey residents to participate in Guernsey pension arrangements. These are generally known as Retirement Annuity Trusts (RATs). Guernsey as a jurisdiction has marketed its QROPS offerings well, and in terms of the type of QROPS that is designed for the long term remains the market leader, warts and all. Guernsey QROPS prices have tumbled

24 - 30 june 2011

33

QROPS jurisdictions in focus - Part 1 dramatically, halving over the last 6 months alone. It is of course generally the case that until the individual who transfers to a QROPS has been outside the UK for five complete tax years that a QROPS offer little or no advantages as the benefit structures and certain taxation elements remain the same as they are for UK residents. It is only after that period of time that UK rules become more or less irrelevant and the QROPS operates more in line with the legislation associated with the jurisdiction holding the pension fund, in this case Guernsey. However for Spanish residents there can be an immediate benefit: Guernsey RATs are unusual in that when income is taken from one although it is drawn from the fund under Guernsey law it is regarded as being an ‘annuity’. There has been considerable success in people having the Spanish authorities accept this and therefore benefiting from the concessionary tax treatment in Spain associated with annuities. Other benefits of a Guernsey QROPS: The other key benefits associated with Guernsey QROPS for the long-term non-UK resident are: 1. A lump sum from age 55 onwards of up to 30% of the fund - at least when legislation to this effect is finally implemented 2. For those under age 55 the ability to take a loan from the fund 3. Complete freedom from UK tax on death (UK tax is typically 55% of the fund)

A safe haven for your pension

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS The ‘warts’ referred to above are associated with a lack of investor protection, and no financial ombudsman service to fall back on. It is also the case with Guernsey to look well beyond pricing, and to consider the flexibility and attitude of the provider if circumstances change on, for example, a return to the UK. Some providers, despite the recent introduction of a code of practice, can be less than helpful in relation to transfer out requests. In our next article we will have a look at the Isle of Man as a QROPS jurisdiction. Embargos by

Michael Olmer

Solicitor, Link Point Legal and Business Services

THIS IS the first of two articles on the subject of ‘Embargos’, a term you may have heard in connection with debt collection, either to enforce payment of a court judgement, or to collect a debt due to the Spanish government, such as taxes and social security payments, or due to local authorities. In this article I shall set out what an Embargo is; who can obtain one and how it works. The next article will deal with what to do if you are notified of an Embargo and how to contest it. An Embargo is an order freezing money or property so as to collect a debt. It is regulated by articles 584 onwards of the Civil Procedure Law No 1 of 2000. An Embargo to enforce a Court Order becomes effective immediately it is issued by the Judicial Secretary, or in Anglo-Saxon terms, the Chief Clerk, for the Court where the judgement was awarded, on the request of the successful party or ‘Judgement Creditor’ in Court proceedings. A Judgement Creditor can ask their agent responsible for dealing with the procedure of their case, or ‘Procurador’ to request the Court to search for bank accounts and other assets which may be embargoed to pay money due. The system of NIF, NIE, and CIF numbers enables the Judgement Creditor to quickly find bank accounts, ‘registrable’ property such as land, cars, boats,

and also regular amounts payable under salaries, pensions, insurance policies, share dividends etc. All the official registries, and other organisations such as banks and insurance companies must advise the Court if they have any records of any assets belonging to the debtor, or if they owe any money to him, under penalty of being fined if they do not cooperate. An Embargo must be for a fixed sum, to which can be added a sum for legal costs and interest due to the Judgement Creditor. There is a specific order in which its property is made subject to the Embargo. The more liquid the asset the higher it comes in the priority of property that can be attached to satisfy the Embargo. So - first is cash and money in current bank accounts. Second - financial instruments that can be realised within a short time. Third - jewellery, valuables and works of art, followed by interest on investments; then movable property such as cars, plant and equipment and furniture, followed by land and buildings. Salaries, pensions, and income from self employment come next, and lastly, money due to the debtor in the medium or long term. For debts due from a business it is also possible for the Court to impose an Embargo on the business as a whole rather than on specific elements of its assets. Certain property is exempt from being subject to

an Embargo such as essential household goods, furniture and clothing. Also professional books and essential tools of one’s trade provided that the value is negligible in relation to the debt, and religious articles. If a salary or pension is embargoed the debtor is allowed to retain a basic income equivalent to the official ‘inter-professional salary’ before any money is taken to satisfy the debt. However this is a minimal figure to prevent the debtor becoming destitute; the current interprofessional income for 2011 is €641.40 per month, plus allowances depending on the number of dependants that you may have. Incidentally the official inter-professional salary in the UK for 2011 is €1,148 per month. If your salary is between the minimum interprofessional salary and double this sum, the amount that can be taken is 30%. The amount that can be taken then rises in stages, until for high earners 90% of their income can be taken. In the second article in this series I shall look at how you would be notified of an Embargo and what you can do to try and contest it. If you are involved in Court proceedings of any kind in England or Spain don’t hesitate to contact us at Link Point where our English and Spanish lawyers will be able to help.

GARDENS LOOK splendid. The weather is finally warming up and although there was a storm last week some recently planted plants need a watering. Last weekend there were signs that expatriate and Spanish permanent and summer residents were giving fruit and bay trees summer fungicide and insecticide sprays and barbecues and paella stands were being used for the first time. After first uses of swimming pools, back washes will start soon and in some cases wash local roads or unfortunately water neighbours’ hedges and plants that don’t welcome chlorinated water. Some visitors use pools noisily at all hours with no hotel controls during their yearly holiday, while residents perhaps have a quiet dip twice a day. But as much as holiday makers and residents deserve to let their hair down they and others also deserve a relaxing summer especially early morning, during siesta times and from mid evening onwards for al fresco eating. So the following guidelines are suggested for summer garden activities. 1. Cut lawns between 10am and 1pm and 3pm to 7pm. 2. If you need to spray trees near or in the bound-

Social responsibility in the garden ary hedge row, warn your neighbour in advance, use ecological sprays and do it late evening on a day neighbours don’t plan to eat outside. 3. Don’t light charcoal or wood barbecues on windy days or evening. During daytime solar cookers are a good alternative as they create no smoke. 4. Play water polo during day time not night time hours. 5. If you plan a large lunch or dinner party, invite the neighbours. 6. Minimise garden-to-garden noise. Hedges are not sound proof! 7. Ensure that pool back wash water does not dampen neighbours hedges or adjacent flower beds. 8. We enjoy background music played by our Spanish neighbours but the occasional nightclub-level blasts from even two streets away are less welcome. 9. Don’t adopt feral cats so that grandchildren have kittens to play with. There are health risks as well as neighbours having to contend with a tribe of growing cats during the summer and Autumn. 10. Control playful use of hoses - neighbours

At last you can have a Chlorine-free pool! UV-C SySTEM: This revolutionary combination of UV-C and copper electrolysis means that you can have a chlorine-free pool! With this UV-C unit as part of your pool system you can keep your pool water fresh, crystal-clear and above all hygienically clean, without having to put chlorine or other chemicals into the water. Chlorine ensures that harmful bacteria cannot develop in your pool. Unfortunately Chlorine also has unpleasant side-effects on the people who swim in the chlorinated water. Examples are irritated skin; stinging, blood-shot eyes; irritation of the bronchial tubes and of course the penetrating smell. Children in particular do not realise that they must not get chlorinated water in their eyes because it will irritate them after swimming. Children with asthma also suffer greatly from chlorinated water, so that swimming can be less enjoyable for them. With the UV-C this is completely a thing of the past. Is the maintenance of your pool water time-consuming? With a UV-C in your pool you will no longer have to add chlorine or other chemicals every day. The UV-C means you can test your pool water once every two weeks. You then need only test your

water’s value with the simple test strip supplied. And if necessary adjust the device to the correct level. ADVANTAGES OF THE UV-C: - Fresh, clean and crystal-clear water - More pleasure and less maintenance with your pool - UV-C demolish bonded chlorine - Chemicals no longer necessary - User-friendly and safe disinfection - 100% effective and continuous action - No pathogenic organisms or formation of algae or bacteria - No storing or handling of dangerous chemicals - No chlorine smell, irritated skin or red eyes - 316L stainless-steel housing, up to 35% more UV-C yield due to reflection - Earthed The lamp and copper set will last for two pool seasons if used for 12 hours a day and 6 months per year. WATCH OUT for a very authentic looking and frightfully devious piece of spyware/virus doing the rounds that reports itself to be from the ‘policía español’ and goes on (in Spanish) to inform you that you have been caught downloading child and animal porn and that you must pay 100€ to such and such a bank account etc. It buries itself into Windows and nothing you try will let you get to your normal desktop icons to try and clean your machine. The guys at www.enetcomputers.net have managed to remove it but inform me it is pretty difficult and needs a considerable amount of technical know-how. It goes without saying that you must not make any kind of contact with the bandits that devised this scam, as once they have your email address or bank details you will no doubt be opening a can of particularly nasty worms. If you do happen upon this then email me and I will arrange to have it removed.

Aunty Says: Thanks for that info Alex, no doubt this tip will solve a lot of recent website problems you folk are having.

unsecured wireless network What are George from Benidorm asks: MY WIRELESS network has been unsecured since it was installed by Telefonica a number of years ago. How do I security enable it? Aunty Says: This can be reasonably straight forward George, but like all things to do with computers it’s simple until you run into problems. I will explain the basics and see how you get on. To setup the wifi security you need to login to the router either using the CD and ‘wizard’ that came with your router or directly via your browser (Internet Explorer of Firefox etc.) If you have the CD then it should be as straight forward as following the installation wizard that runs when you start the CD. You need to be connected to the router with an Ethernet cable (looks like a phone connector but bigger) and it will be in Spanish. Most of the settings are preset and you are looking for the ‘inalambrico’ option. If you

connect via your browser then you need to type ‘192.168.1.1’ in the address bar (where you would normally type www.) and enter ‘admin’ and ‘admin’ as the user name/ password when the login box appears. From here you can browse around for the section called something like ‘wifi security’ where you will be able to activate and set the WEP passcode. This is a very simplified version of events and if you get a bit stuck most computer shops should be able to set this up for a small fee. Take your router and its power supply in and it should only take 2 minutes and cost around €10.

Who or what is Cyberlink? Meri from Torrevieja asks: WHO OR what is Cyberlink? I have Corel Paintshop Pro photo on my computer. When I downloaded from my camera all pictures went into this Corel program but how can I get them into pictures on Microsoft as I don’t like this system. Thank you for being such a good friend to so many of us…

Aunty Says: Hi Meri, good to hear from you. Cyberlink make CD and DVD writing and editing software. You may have had one of their programs bundled with your computer or installed when you loaded a CD that came with a digital

camera. To change the way your photos (or music) files are managed you can right click on a photo and choose ‘open with’ ‘choose program’ and scroll down to the program of your choice. Remember to tick the box ‘always use the selected program’ and you should be okay. You can then uninstall the Cyberlink and Corel programs from ‘add/remove programs’ in control panel.

Alan of Benidorm asks: I OFTEN use CNET downloads but I cannot find out what the different coloured stars for ‘Editor’s Ratings’ mean. Can you help, please? It would make sense to me if there was a key to the different colours on their page.

Aunty Says: I’ve written a few reviews for cnet.com myself Alan (or download.com as it is also known) and the 5 stars are simply a sliding scale of ‘absolute rubbish’ to ‘totally fantastic’. The editor’s review is a bit of a mystery as it often conflicts with what the general public has decided, so I tend to ignore that one. I also click on the user reviews and read the detailed descriptions as this often highlights issues and hints that have saved me a lot of hassle.

That’s all for this week, email me on auntyvirus@roundtownnews.com and I will do my best to sort you out

GADGET INSPECTOR

Gadget Inspector investigates the case of: the Nintendo WiiU THIS WEEK the Inspector takes a look at the next generation games console from Nintendo the WiiU. Pronounced ´wee-you´, the WiiU will be the replacement for the ubiquitous Wii games console. Nintendo has announced the new system as sales of the current Wii have been gradually declining in the face of tough competition from PlayStation, XBox 360 and mobile gaming platforms. At this time the exact final specification has not been released, but what is known – and can be guessed at, certainly is likely to raise the bar in gaming consoles. There will be a new high-tech touchscreen controller with a 6.2 inch screen which works in tandem with a traditional Wii-style remote control. The touchscreen will be in addition to the normal television display and will add a new dimension to game play. The new controller also incorporates two circle pads, a control pad, a camera, an accelerometer, a gyroscope and finally a microphone It will be possible to switch from gaming

on the TV to the controller making game play possible anywhere within the home (or range of the main gaming console…) The new controller will also be able to video call and browse the internet; useful if you don’t have a tablet PC handy. Nintendo have already showed some incredible examples of how the system makes use of the new controller setup - such as a weapon and viewfinder for games, and Artificial Reality capability. It is also possible to use the TV for one game, whilst playing another on the touchscreen controller. It is expected that high definition graphics will be introduced with the WiiU – for the first time in Nintendo´s history. Existing peripherals such as the Wiimote will still be supported, so as not to discourage those upgrading from existing Wii systems. The Inspector´s Verdict: The question is will the WiiU return Nintendo to the top of the gaming pile? Or will the Playstation and Xbox continue to out-sell it? Only time will tell: Nintendo has a strong and loyal user base – but will they be prepared to be Apple-

esque and upgrade, or switch manufacturer? After all, the likely Nintendo WiiU launch date is still some time away, so let us hope it´s not going to be renamed the ‘Woe’.

The Nintendo WiiU will launch in 2012, an exact date or price has not been set by the manufacturer yet – though it is likely to be comparable in cost to the existing Wii.

Knee replacement by

Joan McLellan

M.C.S.P S.R.P Grad Dip

MY NAME is Joan McLellan and I am a Physiotherapist. You may have read that The King of Spain has just recently had a knee replacement and I was so pleased when they said during the report that he was going to spend 3 one hour sessions daily for his rehabilitation. I have always advocated exercises before an operation in preparation, to be as strong as the damaged knee will allow, and then after the op it makes rehab much quicker. I will cover exercises later in the article. WHY AND WHEN The most common reason is to relieve severe arthritis. Having an operation is obviously the last resort taken after all conservative measures have been tried. Physio helps in early stages of arthritis by reducing inflammation and strengthening muscles. There are multitudes of medications and creams, and natural methods using supplements like glucosamine and essential omegas, which by the way I recommend taking in general for all your joints. And now there are available some expensive injections of hyalauron which help with the articulation. The decision to have a knee operation is usually taken when the pain becomes too much to bear, and normal activities such as every day housework, using stairs, or walking any distance have become very limited. THE IMPLANT One of the most important aspects of replacement is determining the type of implant to be used, because often people disagree on what criteria are most important to select the best implant. For example, do you use the newest design or the implant with the

longest track record? Does the surgeon use many different implants depending on each particular patient or is he most comfortable using one type for all? The truth is no-one knows what is the best - the ideal knee implant will allow normal activities, normal motion and last the patient’s lifetime. The only way to know is following and tracking the records for decades because recent designs have no long term results to prove their longevity. The bottom line is to look at a reasonable track record of 5-10 yrs and where the surgeon has used the implant type before and is happy with the results. THE OPERATION The diseased bones are replaced with a metal cap over the femur (thigh bone) and this will sit on top of the tibia replaced with a plastic platform. There are several types of metal used depending on which type of prosthesis is favoured by your surgeon .The plastic is a strong durable polyethylene. The implants may or may not be cemented in. This again depends on the technique used by the surgeon, and the state of the bones, the patient’s age and general health etc all have to be taken into consideration. REHABILITATION This is basically all down to you. I always tell my patients that I can show you what to do but at the end of the day it is how much effort you put into it and how disciplined you are to follow the exercise regime. It is so very important, especially with knees, to begin movement immediately. Some hospitals have machines which give continuous passive movement. The leg is gently bent and

straightened without any effort by the patient. If this is not available it is so important to do it by your own volition. Bend and straighten by sliding the heel on the bed. Scar tissue forms really quickly; it is your body repairing itself. However, when in the knee this can cause restriction of movement. If left too long it can become a major problem. It is normal to feel apprehensive about movement but believe me it is extremely important, and I can’t stress this enough. RECOVERY Again, this entirely depends on how quickly YOU want to recover. Many factors must be taken into account including the patient’s age, the state of their other joints, their occupation - to name but a few. Unfortunately many people come out of hospital without any guidance and cope the best they can. Results would be far better if they had professional advice. Seeing a physio even once to get you on the right path is invaluable. Typically 3 to 6 weeks is the normal time to begin everyday activities. Being able to drive again depends on your ability to bend the knee enough to be able to cope with an emergency stop. Advice and guidance from a good physiotherapist will advance your recovery considerably.

This article has been written by Joan McLellan a physiotherapist since 1974. Joan has surgeries at the L’Ancora Tennis Club in Javea, at the Clinica Britannia in Calpe, and at The English Medical Clinic in Albir. And she will do home visits whenever necessary. Get to know your moles

24 - 30 june 2011

MOLES ARE very common and most people have at least a few. Usually, they are harmless, but - very occasionally - they can be deadly; so it is well worth getting to know your moles. Moles, or ‘nevi’, are simply clusters of pigmented cells, darker than the surrounding skin. They vary in size, colour and shape. Moles can be flat or raised. Sometimes they sprout hair, sometimes they don’t. The reason we need to be careful of moles is that melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer, can develop in or near moles. SO WHEN SHOULD YOU WORRY ABOUT YOUR MOLES? If moles change in appearance you should immediately seek medical advice. Arrange to see your doctor if you have a mole that gets darker, develops uneven colour, or increases in size. If you have a mole that is painful, bleeds, itches or reddens, you should also get it checked out. Your doctor will probably be able to reassure you that there is nothing to worry about. However, if the mole does look suspicious, your doctor will remove it and send it for analysis. Mole removal is a very simple procedure. If the mole is close to the surface, it may be removed by laser. If it is a deeper mole, it might need to be burnt or cut away. This can be done in the doctor’s office under local anaesthetic. If the mole

A quick and easy mole check

proves not to be suspicious you are unlikely to need any follow up, and simple aftercare can be carried out at home. Of course, the biggest risk factor for all types of skin cancer is sun exposure – which is why it is so important to stay safe in the sun. You can still enjoy the beautiful Spanish weather, but be sensible and always take basic precautions. Never go out in the sun without applying a high factor sunscreen, and keep covered up as much as possible, particularly when the sun is at its strongest in the middle of the day. Be extra careful near to water or snow, as the sun’s

rays will reflect and may burn you without you realising. And avoid tanning beds. Check your moles every three months and if you notice any changes don’t hesitate to see your GP for a mole check - it’s quick and easy, and it could save your life. And right now, because Medcare British medical practice, in Benijofar and Alfaz del Pi, believes mole awareness is so important, their surgeries are offering a free mole check. Travelling on I have recently had some inspired questions from readers, and the answer to this particular one became so long it ended up becoming an article instead. A client asked me whether my specific spiritual gifts travelled with me, and the answer because of the amount of travelling that I do, is a resounding yes! Whenever I move house I am always conscious that I have to upsticks and take my spiritual energies with me too, and I do so. Those spirits that are attracted to where I previously lived may choose to stay behind, but those, and for sure they are the greater majority, are connected utterly to me and so they travel with me and go where I go. Certain Spirits always travel with me. This may sound very uncomfortable and possible intrusive, but it is reality. They do not connect with me all at once, and they are not concerned very often with the pleasantries of being such a silent companion of mine, but they are generally there when they know that they can play their part, and they are there to assist me, and they do. Whether I am on stage or in front of a camera or doing a radio interview my guardian helpers are there when I need them and ready and willing to assist in whatever comes up! This is never more obvious then when I am on stage. On these occasions they know that I get by with a wing and a prayer because I am totally reliant on the audience to send me the energy that I need to perform in front of them, and every little detail counts. It is vital to my successful performance in connecting the audience through to their loved ones in the Spirit World. When faced with levels of energy that vary from row to row I have to pick up on those departed souls who wish to bring attention to those in the audience who are waiting, or in need, or both, of a message from the Other Side. Here my guide and my helpers and those who come along just sometimes for the ride are there for something very specific. I could not work without them and their inspiring commitment to me as a Psychic Medium. I never stop thanking them for the years of devoted service that they have given me. This year I have already packed my bags to visit: Bergen, Oslo, London, Surrey, Brighton, and Bournemouth. On each of these trips I

postbag Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com My little boy keeps telling me that he has people who talk to him in his bedroom at night. I do not know whether this is spiritual ability coming through, or a fantasy of his creation, and I try to find out what is going on but do not get very far. He is seven. What can I do? P.O’Brian Well, you should start by asking your son if he can draw what he sees in his bedroom at night for you. Monitor if there is any fear, and check the drawings for anything untoward. Scan them and send them to me, if you like. If you keep asking him and take a stand with this it will disappear if it is a fantasy, and remain if there is something more spiritual going on. Above all keep an open mind and keep the dialogue about it going on. If there is any distress caused by this contact whatsoever seek help and advice with your paediatrician. Spirit if they are responsible will not want to harm your son in anyway, and they won´t! Keep in touch please.

have been attended and supported by those who work with me in Spirit. They have been the impetus to help me to face large audiences and they are too the whisperings in my ear during a one to one consultation with an individual client. So they are happy to entertain too when there are significant needs and larger numbers, but like me, they are happy when they can assist one client to get the spiritual message they have been waiting for, and truly deserve. I would be lost without them, I know, and I never take what they do for granted. In future weeks when I return to Norway, Brussels, The North of England and the Ukraine, I know that they will be making each their own travel plans to be there for me, without reservation, if you will allow the pun! Each and everyone of us has guardians, guardian angels, guides and helpers. Often they are not called upon until they are needed, but they are there. Magic happens if you let it, and we all so have the safety and protection of a host that are there to help us on a day to day basis. Mostly selected from the Spirit World these wonderful guiding souls are assigned to us, or not, and they are committed to protection and the continuity of Spirit. There is never need to fear. Like you and me they are composed of teachers, secretaries, bus drivers, milkmen, flight attendants, farmers, nurses and doctors. They are everyday people who have made their transition into the Spirit World, and they have experienced at least one life on this Earth, so they know the pressures, the need to work to pay bills and the failings of our society in general. They have also chosen to come back to help, and are mindful that the secrets of the Other Side have been fully revealed to them, and they wish to inspire us, support us, and to gently help us understand what we can expect. Alone on a stage and without a script, with no song to sing or dance to show I am grateful that I get the guidance I need to do my work, and hopefully to make a difference. Wherever that finds me, thanks to Spirit and the guiding energies of those who open to me, I both can, and will!

horoscopes by Kenny Corris The influence of Mars means that a sextile is experienced as resident Uranus rocks the boat. Make sure what you are about to do is for all the right reasons, since you have to get it right first time and this brings about a pressure that you do not need right now. As alternatives appear on the distant horizon just remember any compromise wouldn’t go down very well, and be true to yourself. Saturn is working wonders in your sister planet of Libra, and could well be doing you a great favour in the process. Above all negative issues have to be tossed aside and your dogged and sometimes stubborn energies have to work for you for once. With open doors beckoning you forward this is a great time for you to finally know, and realise, that you are far more than you think that you are! With highly communitive Mercury in Cancer, and stoic Mars greatly affecting your every move right now, there is a clash of energies and you have to start to call a truce on that which is bugging you. Keeping anger locked within is your way of dealing with things, but there is a current need to confront someone, and the time will shortly be right. They’ll get their comeuppance and you can offload, hopefully. Heading towards a Partial Solar Eclipse combined with a New Moon, Cancer is the place to be right now, and you have come out of that shell to pause and smile on. There have been times just lately when a nasty nip was on the cards for someone, but sparing the pincers just now has finally told you, in no certain terms, that what has happened actually will work very well for you, wait and see. With a resilient Mercury on the way you will finally get the chance to spread the word and get that message well and truly out. You are happy to have the spotlight, and this week is your chance to show what you can do when you are given the opportunity to just be yourself. Planetary influences of an inspiring Pluto and a highly organised Chiron combine to show you just where to tread and what to do. With Mercury wheeling and dealing all across the horoscope this week there comes a great need for clarification, simplification and continuity. Though you have your plan B, there will be nothing to keep you back from the main event and you will not need your safety net if you play your cards right and stick to you guns. There are many twists and turns this week, and it’s full speed that’s needed. A week in which many changes to routine show you just how hard you have worked to have what you have. When all is said and done it hasn’t been easy to be you, but you have been determined and your survival has kept you lean and keen in the process. Enjoy the surprises that a special week will bring you, and know that you deserve some time to yourself to celebrate in style, your way. With the sting poised and ready you have finished what you have started, and now it is time to assert your power once and for all. Heads will roll, and you will have your say and hopefully all will be sorted once and for all. With a injunction involving Pluto, and a resourceful Neptune close by you have the right back up you need, and the stage is set for your command performance. The show must go on. An emotional week in which there is a blessing in disguise. You have opted out of that which you did not want to involve yourself in, but this has only led to taking something else on. As you turn the pages this week, it is obvious that this is the very best of solutions all round, and you have made everyone happy, even yourself. Resting on your laurels, walk away now, contented and complete. With Pluto there is always more than at first meets the eye, and this week is certainly not an exception. Why waste time looking back right now when you could be looking forward to the fate and the destiny you so richly deserve? Plutonian energies may have reminiscently brushed over the negativities that at first did hold you back, but there is no way of stopping you now, from here onwards. Close as you may be to banging two heads together resist the temptation to lose your temper this week, even if others seem to be losing theirs on a daily basis. Resilient and strong you have a job to do and those that make it difficult should be brought to their senses because you have more than enough on your plate! Time to make plans for some rest and relaxation in the weeks ahead if only to recuperate! Chiron directs, lifts spirits and advises, and with time on your hands and a feeling that something is missing currently in your life it is time to take on something new. Whilst there have been other priorities and you were right to devote your time to them, now a project beckons and you are thankfully free to get your teeth into it, every which way. Others will now gladly follow your innovations and instructions.

If it’s your birthday this week... It isn’t selfish to think of yourself, and your self confidence really needs a boost. This astrological year promises changes all around, but certainly for the better, as a static period ends and there is work to be done.

Word Ladders The key rule is that you must only change one letter at a time as you move from one rung to another, and the word you make must be a proper word! Therefore you may move from BATH --> BATS but not from BATH --> CASH because that changes two letters in one go which is not allowed.

Breaking-up is hard to do by Jack Troughton

T

EENAGE ANGST is central to the comedy of the Careline Kids’ entry to the Costa Blanca Drama Festival when they present ‘It’s Not You, It’s Me’. Penned by Don Zolidis, the play shows how the path of true love is an emotional minefield for youngsters – while the audience will find breaking-up very funny. In all there are 13 couples splitting up in the piece so the audience is likely to feel the odd tug on the heartstrings – and certainly find some sympathy for the young buck dumped by his girlfriend after having her rather long name tattooed across his back. Director Lee Walker had such a hard task choosing his actors for the festival he cast the play twice and each had to perform the play at a Club Night at Careline’s theatre in Alcalali

before he made his choice for the final 21. And as well as the Careline Kids, there are entries from Javea Players, Monte Pego Theatre Company, Laude Lady Elizabeth School, and Big Fish Entertainment. The programme features the work of talents such as Alan Bennett, Willy Russell, Jim Cartwright and Michael Morley. The drama festival is playing Monday 27th June to Wednesday 29th June from 8pm each evening at the outdoor Amphitheatre, Monte Pego. Tickets are 10€ per night or 25€ when booking all three nights. Laude Lady Elizabeth Junior School musical morning

IN FRONT of an enthusiastic audience the children of Laude Lady Elizabeth Junior School were able to show off their musical talents on Tuesday as the Junior Choir of fifty plus pupils sang a selection of well-known rounds and the Training Choir performed for the first time. Pupils presented pieces on the piano, violin, guitar and woodwind instruments. The Recorder group had also practised hard for the event. Everyone agreed that it was a very successful morning of music.

The art of creation by Jack Troughton ARTIST TONY Creasey entertained members of the Benidoleig and District Branch of the Royal British Legion with a few tricks of the trade. The local painter – who won second prize in the RTN Art Competition in association with Anneke – showed off canvasses in various stages of completion. And he demonstrated how from a basic charcoal outline, he used layers of acrylic paint to create texture, generate colour and finalise detail. Tony paints in the style of a number of renowned artists and his work is creating increasing levels of interest, selling both originals and hand-finished prints. He concluded by quoting: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” The branch is staging two fundraising

Tony at work

events with a car rally and treasure hunt on 29th June and an evening of ten-pin bowling on 20th July. For details call 96 558 4422 or visit www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/ benidoleig

Summer adventure project for kids LOOKING FOR something to entertain the kids that’s exciting and will get them working on something completely different? Then take them on a ‘Rain Forest Adventure’ - and the good news is that it’s free! It’s being arranged by the International Christian Assembly Church in Torrevieja, as part of its outreach programme. It is open to all, from Tuesday, 28th June to Thursday, 30th June, from 11am to 12.30pm for children aged from five to 12, at the church at Calle Urbano Arregui 23, Torrevieja, on the western side of the city. There will be games, Bible stories, songs, crafts, skits, refreshments and more. The church will be decorated for the occasion and there will be English and Spanish speaking people there - so it really is for all-comers. Just bring the children along - let them enjoy themselves while you have a break!

“Who ordered the Flying Fish?” AS I am fully aware of the important and yet sadly declining relationship between the kitchen and front of house I will tell a true story in memory of Bertie who worked as a sometimes drunken, even at lunchtimes, head waiter, who wore the ubiquitous nylon white shirt, seven sizes too big, black bowtie and Barathea trousers who never-the-less was, in my view, one of the best waiters I have ever met. At a posh hotel restaurant in Norwich, as a regular high spending customer arrived for lunch, one was immediately greeted, if not overwhelmed, by ‘attention to detail Bertie’. The perfectly laid table was again adjusted in front of the customer to show that only Bertie could demonstrate the correct way it should be done. Order for food taken and ½ bottle of wine served together with fresh bread and butter curls just in time to serve the first course; so smooth and efficient it was a pleasure to watch the master at work. During the brief break between starter and main course Bertie still could not resist the temptation to have yet another quick sherry in the bar just across the alleyway, before gliding back into the kitchen just in time to pick up the main course before once again gliding back into the restaurant together with the Whole Dover Sole main course to be filleted at the table.

However, such was the schooner glide from the kitchen into the restaurant that even Bertie misjudged the height of one of the chair backs which caught his exposed shirt cuff and halted his arm together with the silver flat, turning Bertie around 180 degrees in the process. Unfortunately, the Dover Sole was not halted and continued in the direction of the customer unaware of the need to be attached in some way to the silver flat it was previously attached to. As the Sole dived and hit the floor but a few inches from the customers’ foot, Bertie was already in unflappable and graceful Bertie mode and was already apologising for the mishap and would replace the errant Sole immediately. As Bertie began to approach the sole with the customary spoon and fork for its removal, the customer put his foot on the fish on the floor with a calm and yet commanding voice said “Bertie, whilst I applaud your efforts and professionalism to find another Sole as soon as possible to replace this errant one, I would prefer it if you left that one there on the floor whilst you go and get it.” Call it cheeky, call it old fashioned but Bertie was a waiter by name and yet a manager by nature. His ability to make every customer feel as if they were the only customer in the restaurant as well as the

most important was a gift. He welcomed every new customer as if he had known them for years and any nervous hesitation shown by young customers perhaps on a first date were immediately put at ease by Bertie. These, after all, would be customers of the future. Over enthusiastic or raised voices were soon quieted by the mere look in the direction and perhaps just a raised eyebrow; it truly was a sight to behold.

The TV Round Up by

Alex Trelinski

Broadcaster and freelance journalist

Clueless Losing its sparkle Kennedys

As a massive champion of it, I have to sadly say that the BBC2 panel show, ‘Mock the Week’ has lost a lot of its sparkle. You can only have as a good show as the calibre of guests allows, and with Russell Howard sadly away doing other things, the pace has slackened badly, despite surviving Frankie Boyle’s departure last year. With the acid-tongued Scotsman out of favour after his dreadful Channel Four series, can I suggest that the producers make contact with him to give ‘Mock the Week’ a much needed kick up the proverbial… I’m sure you can see steam rising from Dara O’Briain’s head as he’s working overtime to keep the whole thing together!

B

BC 2 IS looking for a quick and easy way of filling some air-time, and they’ve done so big-time last weekend with a double-helping of the new miniseries about ‘The Kennedys’ on Friday, followed by an encore performance 24 hours later! I presume the controller believes that nobody has any recording equipment, or is having to justify the purchase of this rubbish which aired earlier this year on the History Channel. There was a lot of controversy in the States when this series struggled to find a channel to transmit it, presumably because the script was so poor. The cast like Tom Wilkinson look great in their roles, but they resorted to mouthing lines that must have been scrawled by a comatose Kerry Katona once she had drunk the contents of her fridge. If you want a decent bio-pic about one of America’s greatest political families, then try and find a DVD of Central TV’s vastly superior series made nearly 30 years ago starring Martin Sheen as JFK.

Wimbledon in full swing

The non-stop of orgy of tennis that is Wimbledon is now in full swing on the BBC and Digital+. I am puzzled though with the

BBC coverage as to why Tim Henman is once again wheeled in on an annual basis at the expense of people like John Lloyd who cover the major events all year round and who know what they are talking about. It’s not as if Henman has anything interesting to say (as opposed to the wonderful John McEnroe), and he must have a rather sore posterior, having spent the last three years permanently sitting on a verbal fence of his own soporific making.

Stateside talent The recent season of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ has been put into context with ITV2 starting to run last year’s American version over four nights a week at an almost breakneck pace. The Stateside talent is vastly better and the rubbish acts are more entertaining, plus the vicious honesty of the judges and some hysterical audiences at the auditions make for an infectious cocktail of fun. It’s a shame though that as a media-junkie I know the results from nearly 12 months ago. Surely ITV2 could do a similar 24 hour turnround like they do with ‘American Idol’ to increase the interest and the excitement?

Portrait of a killer – Jack the Ripper case closed SOME YEARS ago I read a book by

Book the short-lived author Stephen Knight Review by entitled Jack the Ripper: the Final

Danny Collins

Solution. Knight, who died in 1985 aged 34, attributed the Whitechapel murders of November 1988 to the copy@dannyjpcollins.com eccentric British impressionist painter, Walter Sickert. Knight based most of his story on the alleged confessions by Sickert to his ‘son’ Joseph, although whether Joseph was Sickert’s son has always remained in question. If he was, he was rightly due the HRH endorsed on his cheques by the Royal Bank of Scotland, for Jospeh would have been one of two brothers born to Sickert out of his relationship with Alice Margaret Crook, the illegitimate daughter of HRH Victor Albert, the Duke of Clarence and Avondale and a shop girl named Annie Elizabeth Crook – not a prostitute as legend Author: Patricia would have us believe. Cornwell Joseph Sickert, formerly known as Publisher: Sphere Joseph Gorman, may have invented Price: €11.20 the tale – he was an artist and may ISBN: 978 0 7515 have been familiar with Walter Sickert’s 3359 0 eccentric lifestyle – or perhaps it was all true. If it was, and Knight believed every word, then the Whitechapel murders were unleashed on the community to cover up Victor Albert’s (aka Prince Eddie’s) dalliance and marriage with a Catholic shop girl and were perpetrated by Queen Victoria’s physician Sir William Gull, aided by Sickert Sr who was into a bit of sadism and gore. The royal theory has been around for years but now enters ace novelist and forensic whizz kid Patricia Cornwell, famous for her fictional chief medical examiner Kay Scarpetta. Miss Cornwell, who is no slouch

herself in forensic matters – she’s actually Director of Applied Forensic Science at the National Forensic Academy – weighs in with DNA, contemporary witness statements, and autopsy reports. Its gruesome reading and Cornwell doesn’t even consider the royal theory but she does fix on Walter Sickert. She matches mitochondrial DNA on stamps on envelopes containing taunting letters written to the police by ‘Saucy Jack’ to letters written by Sickert and she points to the artist’s paintings as containing hidden clues to the murders. It’s all very plausible and I enjoyed the detective work but as should be expected some of the reporting is gory. However, that doesn’t outweigh the unique experience for the reader to follow Ms Cornwell at work as she matches modern forensics and DNA technology to a 19th century case that baffled the best of Scotland Yard. A truly historic milestone in true crime reporting that should have pride of place on any amateur sleuth’s bookshelf – and it wouldn’t go amiss on the reading list of a few professionals as well. REVIEWER’S RETRACTION In my recent review of Nik Morton’s excellent pyscho thriller Pain Wears No Mask, I mentioned Nik’s publisher Libros International and inferred that the company is a contributory publisher, ie one that charges authors a fee to publish. I was apparently in error. My apologies to Nik and to Libros International. Aspiring authors can check out the publisher for themselves on www.librosinternational.com

The Alicante Sun Festival T

HE ALICANTE Sun Festival returns this summer with 120 hours of non-stop music, beach parties and celebrations over 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th July; one of the biggest festivals of its kind in Spain. For the third consecutive year the trend relates to fun in the sun, sunset beach activities, fashion and music. A total of 49 DJs and artistes have been confirmed so far to perform in locations all over the city of Alicante. The first day of The Alicante Sun Festival Week will be Wednesday 13th July when activities will start with a sightseeing tour - the IWE Pub Crawl night (sponsored by White Ibiza Experience) very typical of other European capitals such as Paris, Madrid, London and Stockholm. The flavours of Ibiza will merge with the best house music of the moment with Javier Palmero, Sergio Gallegos, Villa Gombao Inc, Martin Viana and Pablo Melgar... On Thursday 14th at midnight the event will start with Motorcycle ASF –11, featuring motorcycle rider Fonsi Nieto of poster art fame with popular DJ Nano and JP Candela. The fun can be enjoyed simultaneously in clubs such as Zklub Alicante, Cool 37 and Byblos and attendees can use the same access bracelet. From 12 noon on Friday 15th (until you drop) is the Fashion VIP White Party, one of the finest festivals in Spain where the performance of Wally Lopez, a Spanish DJ with international impact with warm-up by Boni and Jose Luis Diaz de Factomanía will undoubtedly be the highlight of the day. The White Party takes place with fashion shows, performers and musical performances in the most exclusive club and terrace in Alicante: The HALL. On 16th July Alicante will be host to a sea of electronic sounds with more than 18 hours of festivities. As is customary the festival doors will open at twelve noon, with World famous paella offered to the first thousand! Two areas will be

Beware of the Bogey - Man! by

Brian Deller

Author of Motoring in Spain

WELL, NOT exactly the ‘Bogey-Man’ - referring to the police. This is another report from a concerned RTN reader who wishes to keep us all safe as much as possible from motoring-related stresses and costs. The gentleman concerned (name withheld) phoned to say a friend of his, a Swedish visitor recently in the Costa Blanca area, parked on a chequered ‘No Waiting/Parking’ area and consequently was given a parking ticket for a relatively small amount. Whether or not he knew how to pay it is not apparent but anyway he went back to Sweden without paying the fine - he thought that’ that was that’ when he left Spain. He was amazed and shocked to receive a summons in Sweden to attend the local Court to answer the charge. Apparently the Spanish authorities are getting tired of those who ignore the laws including Spanish nationals of course so they are pursuing offenders as much as possible even if the European country is not in the EU. Anyway he could not ignore this summons so he attended Court and was made to pay the fine plus in-

terest and the local Court costs plus the equivalent of 500€ administration/costs and charges for the Spanish authority: altogether, an expensive piece of illegal parking. Remember that in Spain he would have lost two points off his licence as well. Another reminder: as I see so many driving around here, if you have a foreign-plated vehicle, as applicable e.g. the UK, you must have a current tax disc receipt on the windscreen as well as a current MOT certificate, etc. Plus the other legal original legal documents for the vehicle. It is being discussed by the Spanish authorities that any vehicle that is not legal to be on the roads faces the possibility soon of being seized and crushed, and having a UK-DVLA SORN means that the vehicle must not be driven anywhere within the EU on public roads. Hola Brian, Hope you can help us. We own a Spanish registered car, which we have had since new. It is now nearly 10 years old. My husband is

terminally ill, and I don’t drive, so we are selling it to a friend. We want everything to be done legally. Can you tell us the correct procedure, what forms both parties have to complete and where we can get these forms from? Also do both parties have to go to the Suma Office at the same time to cancel our Suma Tax and to change Suma details into the friend’s name? We read an article you wrote last year about problems with the Suma Bill where the buyer hadn’t transferred the vehicle documents into his name, and want to avoid the same pitfalls. Hope you can help. Brian says: Be very careful when selling as it is important to see that you will no longer be the owner. The recent ‘sale’ near Torrevieja to which I think you are referring, resulted in the original, still registered owner being fined a reported 20,000€ after the new driver had serious accidents. The fines were to be chased to the UK for payment through the UK courts.

There is much more detailed information on all motoring subjects in my book. Brian Juan (John) Deller, Malaga, author, ‘Motoring in Spain’ www.spainvia.com. Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars JUNE HAS been a busy month for the Club Torrevieja Classics & Specialists Car Club. Ten cars were invited to the Biblotec in Los Alcazares on Sunday 12th June to support the MABS’ ‘picnic in the park’, a great success attended by more than 500 people, well supported by local artists, including popular Showaddywaddy. The following Sunday the 19th saw 13 cars at Manolo’s on

the Crevillente road at 2.30pm for a drive through the country roads towards. On Wednesday 15th we found time for an afternoon curry at The Punjabi Palace in Los Montesinos, where we sampled the delights of the afternoon special: hot, hot! ‘Cool runs’ in the evenings are planned for the next couple

of months to avoid the afternoon heat. If you would like to join us more information is available at www.ClubTorrevieja.com or contact Ron Blackwell on 96 679 1212 or come along to one of our monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Cafeteria Marina Club in the International Marina.

The final whistle With Andy Kay

RTN Golf Club update

www.andykayevents.com

Under 21’s are under par Dennis Jordan NORTH REGION

Mike Probert SOUTH REGION Stuart Pearce

GOLF ON the Costa Blanca has been excellent this year with many golfers, whether living here or on holiday, booking green fees and trying more courses in this area. It is a shame that with all the unused land around that we haven’t had any movement on the development of more golf courses with permission being granted to build. About five years ago there were a lot of applications of request for more courses, but it seems nothing has actually been granted. Maybe in 2012 we might be lucky and add to the already great courses on the Costa Blanca. Keep a look out here in the RTN for updates of offers for green fees. You can contact us at rtngolfnorth@gmail.com or telephone 630 714 373. Have a great week in our glorious sunshine playing and enjoying a great round of golf. THIS WEEK I experienced the delight of playing the Alhama Signature course which is a genuine ‘golfers’ course and plays like a seaside links course with rolling fairways, fast undulating greens and knee-high rough. Though the RTN Golf Club you can play this course from as little as €45 including a buggy during the summer months. As reported last week Altorreal have now extended their superb price of only €55 for 2 players and buggy until 15th September 2011 and represents the cheapest golf in the region. It is an opportunity not to be missed if you want value for money. Deals of the week are at La Finca, where for only €164 you can have four players and 2 buggies and at Lo Romero where the same package is only €160. You can see the current deals available to RTN Golf Club members in the price table.

HERE’S A damning statistic for you: in their three group matches at the European Under -21 Championships in Denmark, England misplaced a total of 61 long-ball passes. Yep, that’s right, 61 aimless punts down-field ended up with the opposition, the highest number by any team in the tournament. Coach Stuart Pearce is an admirable man and a patriotic one too but what on earth is he teaching his young charges? England played it tight against Spain and got away with a draw but they then stuck to largely the same tactics in a goal-less, stinker of a game against Ukraine and needing to win their last match, they were caught out at the end and done over by the Czech Republic. Apart from being technically deficient when compared to the European rivals, former England defender Danny Mills has another theory on why England’s Under-21’s failed so miserably. England’s base for the duration of their stay in Denmark was the opulent Kellers Park Spa resort. It was the last word in luxury but the players were effectively living in a bubble. Spain meanwhile stayed in a regular hotel and came and went as they pleased as well as mixing with the locals. And Mills has got it spot on saying “These boys should be getting out and seeing some of the countries they are staying in. It might teach them a thing or two and make them appreciate what they have. By being holed up in a posh hotel, the gap between them and reality is widening. That can’t be a good thing.”

Murcia Golf Hound Murcia Region

THE MURCIA Golf team continued its quest to find the best courses in the Murcia, Alicante and Almeria regions by playing at the Las Ramblas course, in the coastal resort of Campoamor. The team started the afternoon with lunch in the impressive clubhouse, where we were treated to a seat on the balcony with stunning views overlooking the course. Once again we were very impressed by the professional approach of all the staff with a special mention to the course marshal who was only too happy to provide us with advice on playing the course. The name of the course is a very good indicator of the design of this golf course, as ‘Rambla’ is the Spanish word for ‘ravine’, these ramblas being well place around the course, coupled with narrow fairways. The strategy for this course is without doubt accuracy and keeping the ball in play rather than length. While all aspects of the course were in superb condition, the greens particularly stood out and their speed provided a good examination of one’s distance control. Make sure you do not miss out on playing at Las Ramblas.

SOMERSET STRAUSS The England cricket captain Andrew Strauss is badly out of form and needs to spend some time at the crease before the Test series begins against India. You’d think that with nearly one month to go before the first encounter at Lords that this wouldn’t be a problem. But due to the woeful state of the County game in England, Strauss has to go on loan to Somerset from Middlesex to get a game. The reason being that in the next month, Middlesex have only one first class fixture. Just one in a month! And that’s because they have to play nine T20 games and a 40 over match as well. County cricket is supposed to be the breeding ground for future Test stars. At the moment, it is merely a breeding ground for a very dodgy loan system. WARNER WAVES BYE-BYE A leaked report from Fifa’s ethics committee (an oxymoron if ever there was one) has revealed that there was ‘comprehensive, convincing and overwhelming evidence’ that both executive committee members Jack Warner and Mohamed Bin Hammam were guilty of the cash-for-votes allegations. And yet, because Warner has resigned, Fifa has thanked him for his service and laughably says he leaves with the ‘presumption of innocence maintained.’ In other words, as they have done so many times before, they are sweeping the matter under the carpet. Oh, and by the way, Fifa will also pay Warner a pension of £23,000 per year for life. Honestly, you couldn’t make it up!

How low can it go? Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891

OUR PART of Spain nearly always follows trends a little slower than many would like: the trend for dropping the price of golf is slower than very many would like. On the Costa Del Sol golf courses have reduced the price of eighteen holes including a buggy to just 25€ in some cases! Are we going to see that here? Probably is my best guess. The demand for lower priced golf will continue for some time as we all struggle with the lack of disposable income in our pockets. We have overpaid for many years now and golfers seem determined to see tremendous value for money return to our sport before they will consider returning to our golf courses in some places. There are still some golf courses that are trying hard to hang onto the old ways but these are diminishing fast, thankfully. When RTN Golf Club started I approached a club to ask them to enter the scheme and was invited to meet the management. At that meeting I was explaining my beliefs regarding price and why golfers were turning away from the game. I was asked what I thought the correct price was for this particular course and thought that when I said 45€ including buggy I was going to be lynched! I was promptly informed that nobody would play that course for less than 55€ plus buggy. I am extremely pleased to say that now see you can play that particular course through RTN Golf Club for less than the price I first tried to negotiate. The last few blocks are finally falling into place and will be welcomed by all that play the game. The warning I feel I must issue now though is that unless we use these courses and they receive a regular flow of income I fear we will lose one or more of them. We must try to play fair if we

24 - 30 june 2011

can - the golf clubs have in the main changed their attitudes and we need to encourage golfers to play the game if they can afford to. By seeing the golfers return we all can hope that the course owners will see that the only way they are going to get their facilities used is by keeping them affordable to the masses. Fingers crossed that lessons have been learned! WIN A ROUND OF GOLF FOR 2 INCLUDING BUGGY AT THE BEAUTIFUL EL PLANTIO RESORT IN ALICANTE To enter this competition, simply answer the question below correctly. Every correct answer will be entered into a draw at the end of the month and the winner of this fantastic prize worth over 180€ will be picked at random at the end of each month. Send your entries by email to golf@roundtownnews.com. The decision of the editor of RTN will be final in making the winning selection. Question for 24th June 2011: What is the standard size of a golf ball? A. 1.68 Inches B. 1.62 Inches C. 1.80 Inches All answers must be received no later than 5pm on 30th June 2011 to be entered into June’s draw, to be made on 1st July. The winner will be announced in RTN on 8th July 2011. NOEL EASTWELL GOLF ACADEMY AT EL PLANTIO For the very best in golf coaching, contact Noel on 639 730 891.

RTN Golf Club Newsflash: The RTN Summer Greensomes League WE ARE now just over one week away from the start of The RTN Summer Greensomes league. When we first thought of providing competition golf for our members during summer we anticipated an entry of around 12 players. We have more than doubled this number of entries and now find ourselves with a very pleasant problem that we can resolve in only one way - to change tee times to an earlier start. For the duration of the RTN Summer Greensomes league we will now have a first tee time of 15.28 each week starting on 5th July. Your new tee times for the first game on 5th July are below: please arrive and pay your entry at least half an hour before your start time. Noel Eastwell will collect the 3€ per player contribution to prizes after golf has finished on 5th July. Prizes will be purchased from Levante & Lebeche and given to the winners after the final game along with a trophy that the winners will keep for one year. Start Time

2nd Race 1st Laser 13: Tug Wilson, Vernon O’Byrne 2nd Gamba: Brian Blackburn, Robert Nicholls 3rd Sea Hopper: Mick Burgess 4th Laser 2000: Peter Cadwell, Terry Wedick 5th Weta 14: Edd Penning, Janice Penning At the beginning of the first race the winds were north easterly between 17 and 20 knots. The Weta 15 retired due to collision dam-

age just before the start. The Lasers and the Gamba reefed in before the start and six boats crossed the start line. It was a fast three lap race, no capsizes, but the Catamaran ran into difficulties at the fifth buoy and didn’t finish. The Sea Hopper did extremely well in the strong wind conditions and finished 3rd. The wind speed dropped to between 15 and 16 knots for the second race of two laps. Five boats crossed the start and five finished. The Sea Hopper helmed by Mick Burgess came 3rd for the second time that day. In spite of all the mishaps a good time was had by all. The next race will be the SAMM race for MABS in September. The date will be published in July. If you would like to join us contact John at john.down@sailingmarmenor.com or look on the SAMM website www.sailingmarmenor.com for the entry form.

For further details ring Alan Roscoe 968 570 876 or email: anglerstogether@gonuts4free.com THE VENUE for this week’s match was again the Embalse de Argos at Calasparra. This match was the annual charity match. The water level is still very high, and could still be rising, not allowing us to use all the old pegs. The fishing, as last week, was poor, in terms of the amount of anglers catching decent weights. Still, at this time of the year the pegs that are producing are the deep water pegs at the far end, close to the point. Also the water is very clear with no algae colouring the water! The weather had vastly improved with the sun out most of the day. 1st Ian (Irish Wizard) Dalzell fishing the pole using tares with 23.58 kilos 2nd Lenny (Ex Cultural Attache) Bolton fishing the pole using paste with 23.48 kilos 3rd Mick (The Arsenal) Hill fishing the pole using paste with 22.48 kilos ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS supplied by Terry Screen This week’s 10th round of the Spring Series was fished on the river Segura on the 14th June 2011. The water still has this ‘grey clay’ colour and was pushing through very fast with all types of debris: reeds, bottles etc. I am not sure where all the extra water is coming from at present, it is a possibility they are running excess water off the Reservoirs to get the levels down before the winters rain as at present all the Reservoirs are brim full. Fishing was again patchy with the top three anglers as follows: 1st Stan (The Man) Roberts with 11.640kg on the pole,

pellet and maggot 2nd Lenny (Ex Cultural Attache) Bolton with 10.460kg on the pole and maggot 3rd Mike (The Arsenal) Hill with 8.460kg on pole, feeder and corn Mike at the moment has found his form and is making the best of it. All details are available from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368. Anglers Together ANGLERS TOGETHER was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters. Meetings are held in two locations on the second Friday and Saturday of each month. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about. The next meeting at Mary’s Bar, Campoverde (near Pilar de la Horadada) will be held on Friday 8th of July at 12pm. On Saturday 9th July at 12pm the meeting will be held at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo, opposite the seafront between Isla Plana and the Port. NOTE The subs are now due at these meetings: €5 for renewal and €10 for new members. Refreshments and lunch are available at each location. Come along to a meeting nearest to you.

A SPECIAL clinic at El Plantio for RTN Golf Club Members will run throughout July and August on Mondays starting at 10am for two hours. The clinic will show how golfers can improve the most important part of their games, the scoring zone, to produce better scores on the golf course. We will cover chipping, putting and bunker play all for the cost of just 20€ per person. Places are limited and will be allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis.
