EU Summit: More solutions for recession
PRIME MINISTER Mariano Rajoy has attended an EU Summit targeted at seeking more effective solutions to the economic recession and including discussions on how to promote employment for young people. Talks that began at 2pm were preceded by a separate discussion between French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti. The redistribution of 82,000 million Euros of EU funds is earmarked to stimulate job creation with emphasis on young job seekers. There is also the possibility of a proposal to relax the deficit target for countries like Spain. As to the Greek crisis, Merkel has proposed that Athens cede control of its budget to a Eurogroup commissioner with powers to veto government decisions and monitor implementation although the European Commission confirmed that Greece would retain full responsibility for the implementation of austerity measures and control the national budget. The summit coincided with a general protest strike in Brussels, making it necessary for heads of government to arrive at the summit via helicopter.
