Charity pedal power PLUCKY CYCLIST Paul Renshaw is pedalling the 1,400 miles from Liverpool to Benidorm to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research in memory of his younger sister Joanne. by Jack Troughton Currently midway through France, Paul hopes to arrive in the Costa Blanca next Thursday (19th December) where he will be greeted by parents Frank and Ann. He has been on the road since Wednesday 4th December and is cycling 120 and 150 kilometres a day as he heads for Spain. Speaking yesterday morning from La Rochelle, he said he was enjoying a rare rest day on his marathon journey after a dose of food poisoning “put a spanner in the works.” And he told RTN: “I am having a great time. It is hard work but very fulfilling and I am really enjoying it. I love cycling anyway. “I cannot bring our Jo back but I hope to be able to help a few people by raising some money for this

worthwhile charity.” On his ‘JustGiving’ page, he said Jo passed away in January 2007 after losing a two-year-battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. “Jo was my little sister, the bravest little sister ever.” And he said he was cycling to Benidorm “because she’ll know I’m riding for her” and it would be nice to make some money for the charity. He said along the route he had encountered some frosty mornings. “The roads are a bit slippery first thing but I am geared up for the cold and the weather hasn’t slowed me down. “However, I am looking forward to getting to the Med and enjoying some Spanish sunshine.” If you would like to support Paul you can donate via the Just Giving website www.justgiving.com/paulrenshaw1

Speeding growth for AVE

THE NEW Madrid to Alicante high-speed AVE train has experienced passenger growth of almost 50% since launching in June 2013. The official data verifies the commitment and positive uptake by the public and especially the business community to the newest high-speed route operated by the Valencian department of Renfe. The increase is related in part to new tariffs that came into effect in February 2013, involving an average 11% reduction in the price of all tickets, plus discounts that could be as high as 70% when a booking was made well in advance.
