Work for life

TALENTED DENTIST Dr Thomas Anton would love to give up the day job and follow his “vocation”, creating colourful sculpture out of stone. By Jack Troughton He followed in his father’s footsteps to become an artist and 16 of his pieces can be seen at a new exhibition of his work at the Klein-Schreuder Foundation sculpture garden at Alfaz del Pi. Thomas, whose has a dental practice in Benidorm, is a fine arts student in Altea has created a series of tactile – sometimes explicit but always sexy - works in alabaster, marble, and soapstone for the show he calls “Sensuality”. “My father was a sculptor, I am a dentist,” he told RTN at the exhibition’s press preview. “He had to go without money while all my brothers and sisters and I did things you could live from. “Three years ago my father died and I started to study fine arts. Now it has become more than a hobby, it is my vocation. I still work as a dentist but would like to do this as my full time job.” DISCOVER Thomas has lived in Spain for 20 years said his work was available for sale. “I have still to be discovered! I would very much like to work full time as an artist and not be a dentist.” And while he also works in wood and iron, his favourite medium remains stone and he carefully picks samples for their colours. As an example he points to an embryo shaped from a pinktinged alabaster – held against the light and it appears to have its internal blood vessels and organs in place. “Colour is very important to me,” he added. Thomas’ exhibition opens this Sunday (30th September) at 11am, when visitors can enjoy a glass of wine and music. It runs until 4th October. The Sculpture Gardens has a fascinating permanent exhibition and is open between 10am and 2pm every Sunday or during the week by appointment.
