TRANSITION TO IN-PERSON LEARNING

During the 2021-2022 academic year, Girard College continued implementing its hybrid re-opening plan with almost 100 students returning to campus for in-person instruction in September 2021. Thanks to the perseverance of our staff and the courage of our families, all students were welcomed back for in-person academic and residential programs during the school year

While life at Girard returned to normal with extracurricular activities and school traditions resuming, our students experienced academic learning loss and emotional trauma due to the two years of hybrid learning during the pandemic The Achievement Team offered specialized programs and support to ensure that scholars received the individualized attention they needed.

CAMPUS LIFE RESUMES WITHOUT RESTRICTIONS

As concerns about the COVID pandemic continued to dissipate, all students returned to campus for the 2022-2023 school year with classes, extracurricular activities, and sports programs resuming without any restrictions. A highlight of the school year was the induction of seven students into the National Honor Society during a Chapel service. Students participating in the premiere of Be Holding were rehearsing in preparation for performances in the spring of 2023.

Rowing was introduced as a new sport at Girard, with Coach Brannon Johnson training students on the Schuylkill River. Derek Green, a member of the Board of Directors of City Trusts, was honored with the unveiling of a boat named after him.

In January 2023, Girard College began commemorating its 175 anniversary, and the school community looked forward to the reopening of Founder’s Hall which had undergone a $12 millio renovation project that began in 2022. The Advancement Offi began preparations for hosting the Reach for the Stars 175th Anniversary Celebration Gala in Founder’s Hall in December

GIRARDSECURES$1MILLIONGRANT FORFOUNDER’SHALLRENOVATION

In November 2022, Girard College was awarded a $1 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RAC-P) grant to support the revitalization of Founder’s Hall, the iconic heart of Girard’s campus. Senator Sharif Street and Representative Donna Bullock were instrumental in helping the school secure the RAC-P grant This project received a $500,000 grant in a previous round of RAC-P grants. (continued on next page)

Funding for the Founder’s Hall revitalization project will preserve the National Historic Landmark and allow year-round access and programming for Girard students as well as neighbors and community partners throughout the city.

The project included interior work to create a single, large, multi-purpose room for events, conferences, or lecture-style seminars. Adjacent rooms will be repurposed for support spaces, a catering kitchen, and breakout conference spaces Infrastructure upgrades were needed for accessibility, HVAC, electrical, lighting and life safety systems

The museum exhibits on the second floor, featuring Stephen Girard’s personal collection and a Girard College historical archive, underwent a refresh, and they will benefit from the new climatecontrolled environment. Due to the building’s historical significance and designations, each proposed change was vetted by the Philadelphia Historical Commission and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission

Construction began in April 2022, and Founder’s Hall reopened in December 2023 to coincide with the school’s Reach for the Stars 175th Anniversary Celebration Gala.

BE HOLDING PREMIERE PRESENTED AT GIRARD

In the spring of 2023, Girard College hosted a world premiere of Be Holding, an original performance created by celebrated artists in collaboration with Girard students.

ensemble Yarn/Wire, and director Brook O’Harra were key members of the Be Holding creative team.

Be Holding was commissioned and produced by Girard College, with support from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, and in partnership with CDS Creative Productions

Be Holding, based on Ross Gay’s award-winning poem of the same name, focuses on America’s history of racial violence in search of Black genius, justice, and joy. Composer Tyshawn Sorey, new music

Girard students worked with this team of professional artists for nearly two years during several residencies on campus to bring the project to life.

Be Holding was a signature project of the College’s Campus for the City initiative, which seeks to engage the wider community and lead conversations on issues of equity and social justice, particularly through the arts.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

MALACHI ROSE CLASS OF 2026

Student Council

Class Representative and Admissions Ambassador

Malachi Rose ‘26, has already learned the importance of perseverance, and that trait helped him become a student at Girard College Malachi applied to Girard three times before his persistence paid off and he was accepted as a ninth grader in 2022. Although Malachi’s entrance test scores were initially a few points below what he needed to be accepted, he remained focused on improving his scores and becoming a Girardian.

Getting accepted to Girard was important to Malachi because he wanted to attend a school with a stronger academic curriculum and more opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities.

“My mother knew that getting me into Girard would help set me up for future success,” Malachi added “She wanted me to come here because she knew the school would offer me a better education than the previous schools I attended.”

During his first year at Girard, Malachi didn’t waste any time getting involved in extracurricular activities. He joined the football, basketball, baseball and track teams, and became a student admissions ambassador and student council class representative

Malachi has been doing well academically, and one of his favorite subjects is history. He has enjoyed learning about the medical techniques the Egyptians developed during the Golden Age of Egypt as well as Abraham Lincoln’s presidency.

Going to a boarding school appealed to Malachi because he wanted the opportunity to interact with other students more while living on campus.

“I see myself in a lot of my peers, so it’s good that I get to spend time with people I get along with in a safe environment,” Malachi said. “At a regular high school, you’re there for eight hours, but at Girard I get to be connected with my classmates all day and all week That builds a stronger bond too. I feel like that's a plus with being at Girard.”
