3 IDEAS FOR EXPLORING THE SAN SEBASTIAN REGION Intense. Dynamic. Authentic. Enticing. Unusual. Magnificent. Unique.

T

he San Sebastian region is all about culture, scenery, food, people, festivals and the art of good living. It’s a paradise to lose yourself in and discover the joys of real Basque culture.

ENJOY A MEAL OUT AT A CIDER-HOUSE Any time of the year is a good time to experience eating out at one of the seventy cider-houses in the Gipuzkoa area. Cider has been made for centuries in the region using traditional artisan methods to obtain the fermented apple juice. Following a tradition known as txotx – a Basque word which refers to the bung in the cider barrels – many Basques visit the cider-houses to have lunch or dinner and sample the season’s new cider directly from the barrel, before it is bottled. The typical cider-house menu consists of a salt-cod omelette as a starter, chargrilled steak for the main course, followed by cheese, walnuts and quince jelly for dessert. A trip to the cider-house is a great way of tasting authentic Basque cuisine and learning about the history of Basque cider. Set menus start at €38 www.sansebastianreservas.com

TAKE A BOAT TRIP AND DISCOVER THE BREATHTAKING FLYSCH The dreamlike quality of this spectacular natural rock formation earned the area the status of UNESCO Global Geopark. The Basque Coast Geopark covers a narrow stretch of coastline between the towns of Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku. The mesmerizingly beautiful cliffs and outstanding million-year-old flysch makes the Geopark a must. The one-day return boat trip from Zumaia to Sakoneta takes visitors through the protected Deba-Zumaia biotope. Boat trips start at €17 www.sansebastianreservas.com

VISIT TOLOSA MARKET AND ENJOY A TYPICAL BEAN-STEW MENU The market in Tolosa is considered one of the most traditional markets in the Basque Country. The market is spread over three separate venues: the riverside market, known as the Tinglado or Zerkausia, where traditional local food produce is sold; Plaza Verdura, where flowers and plants are sold, and Plaza Euskal Herria where shoppers will find imported goods and textiles.

Why not take an informative, fun guided tour of the market with a traditional Tolosa red-bean stew afterwards at Restaurante Botarri? The bean stew comes with local pickled green peppers from Ibarra, and other traditional accompaniments. Set menus start at €30 www.sansebastianreservas.com
