"User Experience Design is everywhere in our daily lives, it doesn't always need to result in digital or tangible product outputs. It starts from empathising with the users and understanding their way of life, digging into what exactly that unmet need is before thinking about the solution"

1. Be original with your portfolio

From the recruiters' perspective, they want to understand the underlying motivation and purpose behind your projects instead of only providing a list of UX projects Hence, it is important to know what and why you want to build something It is also good practice to diversify your portfolio to differentiate yourself against competitors.

2. Find good mentors

Experienced mentors are essential in helping your prepare for the interview stage of the selection process They can provide you with industry insights and best practices that will show your interviewer that you ' re really interested about the field You can seek good mentors from your university alumni network, from professionals on LinkedIn or from career events organized by different companies You should be confident in reaching out to these professionals and keeping in touch with them as it will helping your career growth in the short and long term

3. Research on job requirements

The product design sector is continuously evolving and demanding new skill sets. When you look for a job, note down the position requirements carefully, highlighting the keywords that they use to describe the role Use these keywords in your cover letter and interview stage to make yourself stand out from other candidates.

1. Do freehand drawing or graphic design skills are required for those who would like to study UI or UX?

Answer: In my personal experience they are very valuable skills to have that will help you accelerate quicker, but it’s not a must as you can learn these on the job. It depends on the specifics of your role, the culture of the company, perhaps even the industry you ’ re in. For example, I’ve heard from colleagues who work in agencies/startups that at times, their projects have very tight timelines and so the process is sped up, hence UX professionals tend to build mockups straight in sketch or Figma. Whereas in other projects/ industries where it’s more research/discovery heavy, there could be multiple ideation workshops or initial user testing sessions where low fidelity pen and paper sketches would be valuable. At the end of the day, freehand drawing or graphic illustration are your tools in communicating your idea. So if you can communicate in some other ways to get your ideas across, I don’t see why not

2. Do you have any advice for someone who has had some experience in UX Design but is actually majoring in a different sector in Design and would like to break further into the User Experience industry?

Answer: I would say hone your skills and strengthen your design thinking foundation by attending in-person and online UX workshops/courses where you get to meet other UX professionals who are already in the industry. This way you get to learn more about the different approaches/ processes people take and at the same time network! There’s loads of groups on meetup that organize such events. Also if you want a more structured break into the space, I would say a brief UX course would be sufficient , doesn’t even have to be a formal degree/masters in UX/HCI. Checkout Design Lab and General Assembly as they will teach you the foundational basics and guide you through several case study projects which you can include for your portfolio to apply for jobs right after! Saves you the time from having to come up with your own projects in your free time.

3. Do you think having a different major in Design is a negative deal breaker for recruiters even though you ’ ve had experience working in the UX industry?

Answer: Not at all, at the end of the day recruiters look at your portfolio and the process you take into solving a design problem, what your design intent is, how have you ‘humanize’ the solution through your user-centered design approach, and finally of course they’ll take into consideration your hard skills in being able to communicate your idea/solution (e.g can you sketch/prototype, do you understand design system, have you used it before, your experience in designing with accessibility in mind , have you collaborated with horizontal UX partners, etc) So, don’t doubt yourself just because you studied a different design course, fundamentally the overarching design process is very similar in interior design or industrial design or UX. We always have clients/ users regardless of the major, and it’s within our scope to work with them to find out what their goals/ needs/ pain points are.

4. What are some must-reads you’d recommend that have been useful within your careers?

Answer: Atomic Habits, The Culture Map, Power Talk

5. If I am a second year management student, Is it too early for me to get international experience first if I want to enter an international career?

Answer: It’s never too early. If you find opportunities, I’d recommend you do it. Germany has a lot of easy visa options for working students and trainees. If feasible, I’d recommend starting there since there’s also a lot of international, English speaking companies.

6.What is the most important value to have if I'm working in a multicultural environment?

Answer: Open-mindedness and patience
