Bukit Nanas

which is a 2-storey height infill building that dlemonstrates the thematic concept and

The site is located opposite the green lung of Kuala Lumpur, which is Bukit Nanas. It has provided a good air quality to the area. While behind of the site is the main river of Kuala Lumpur - Klang River.

Memories

The river bed always hold the memory that are forgotten and were rarely discovered by people. Small sweet memories are often forgotten by us especially when we start to grew older.

However those are the little memories that holds the soul of each of us. Therefore Klang River definitely holds the memories of Kuala Lumpur from the big flood to the glory of Kuala Lumpur.

Through the concept ‘memories’ it is for people and the community to remember the happiness they once used to have. By doing that, we need to appreciate and find back the memories that were forgotten or lost. Just like the river, our memories are there, it just need to be rediscovered once more.

The site is located at Jalan Ampang and also the city centre of Kuala Lumpur. This building serve as a relaxing hub for students and also workers around that area.

From there they are able to slowly find back their childhood memories where it is their most happiest time

Pulau Duyong, Terengganu

INSPIRATION

“ Pasak ” - The internal connection Pasak is known as the connectors between each wood plank in boat making. It is a very strong element which holds and supports the boat together. As each boat makers would say ‘Pasak’ is the core of boat making in Pulau Duyong. Without ‘Pasak’, boat making culture in Pulau Duyong would not exist.

CONCEPTUAL

Boat Making Culture was known around the island but it is somehow not exposed to the community in Pulau Duyong. They did not know the importance of this culture, nevertheless understand it. The existance of “Pasak” was also known to very few people as “Pasak” is always hidden inside the boat structure. Throughout this project, “Pasak” will be revealed, thus bring it into the light.

The key purpose to this project is to go back to the origin - The locals.

THE STRENGTH OF “PASAK

Boat making culture not exposed to the local community especially the younger generations

Outsiders were brought to the island to learned about traditional Pulau Duyong boat making but it failed due to unable to adapt to the environment

Through the academy, the locals must be prioritize while tourists will be

the secondary targeted users.

G E N I U S L O C I / / “C alm and Str ong C ommunity” The genius loci of Pulau Duyong is boat making as boat making is the event and culture that holds Pulau Duyong together and creates the bond between the villagers on Pulau Duyong.

The overall idea of this Boat Making Academy is to bring the environment of Pulau Duyong and the community into the building. This is the main element of the building. Usage of mechanical ventilation is minimize. The boat making yard has maximum air ventilation that runs through it to ensure that the boat making yard has good air ventilation and air quality.

The community is a very important factor in this project. As we know, boat making tradition is not very well exposed to the younger generation due to some constrain. This project will start to bring in the community especially the youngster and it will be highly accessible to the local community.

Lobby Entrance The lobby entrance is an open air area. A double volume is provided to improve the ventilation in the lobby. The lobby connect straight to the boat making yard. The workshops are located opposite the lobby so that it would not effect the circulation flow in the building

In the infomation age, the concept of habitation has been transformed from “simple” dwelling to “life style” living . The traditional communication by the communal halls has been defeated by digital communication devices. In short, the conventional perception of dwelling has been slowly merged into a single entity environment. In this ‘site specific’ and ‘specific design requirement exercise’ that requires specific solution to the problem, our trill on design will begin with our first step on the given site.

1. Provide a space for children to have intergeneration interaction.

2. Provide a space for chilidren to relax and distress after a tiring and stressful day in school 3.

Juxtaposition between circular and linear to emphasize that with the entertainment element, it breaks the formality of formal education.

Minimize boudaries between space to create an interdependant relationship between space and breck the boundaries between formal and informal education.

DESIGN INTENTION

Malaya’s wealth is heavily reliable to the Klang river. Moreover, before Klang river was transformed into a concrete monsoon river, the local people lives was always been connected to Klang river. However as the development of Kuala Lumpur increases people has slowly grow away from the river and slowly, the river was forgotten by the people.

Existing pedestrian pathway facing Klang river that has the potential to be design into a pedestrain friendly pathway.

East side - 2 primary schools // West side - busy Jalan Damai.

It has the potential to connect this 3 places together through a good connection of pedestrian walkway

Splitting the site into 2 zones. 2 zones are then connected by the link bridge and a central plaza on the ground floor that opens towards Klang river.

Zoning of the building reflects to the stages of river rehabilitation

LANDSCAPE

A threshold is created between 2 zones so to create a path where the noise pollution from the busy akleh highway can pass through in between

Building can be access by pedestrian pathway from all sides into the ground floor to create a good connectivity between the proposed site and site surroundings.

To minimize the pressure brought by the 6-storey building towards surrounding site, landscape plazza are design on both sides to create a buffer zone between the existing building.

There are a total of 3 entrance to the building so to create a good connectivity with the pedestrian pathway.

To add in the sustainable feature of the building, rain water harvesting pond is designed where this collected rain water will be used to irrigate the landscapes

Concept Development Our half pavilion is carefully manifested in response to the contradicting and constrast qualities of Nansha Bird Park, through 3 key equilibrium aspects : 1. The site (Solid vs Fluid) - an instersection of solid platform and fluid lake.

2. The Skin (Eternal vs Ephemaral) - a balance between the skin’s eternal silhouette; and its ephemeral responses to the natural phenomena such as rain and sunlight.

3. The structure (Naturak vs Experimental) - a mixture of original beauty of bamboo; and experimental bamboo features.

Together, these 3 aspects forms a series of palyful & flexible spaces, from fully open to fully enclosed, connecting the users of the half pavilion to heaven, earth, inhabutants and their inner self.

In conclusion, The Vice Versa is the confluence point that seek to unfold, to integrate, to harmonize and to complete as The Other half of the beautiful Nansha Bird Park.
