PODIUM DESIGN

For the rooftop terraces on the market rate apartments I created a planting design and developed details for the cast in place concrete planters. The four distinct terraces have different plantings that reflect their specific uses. On the pool podium tropicalesque plants were used to add an exotic flare. For the terraces devoted to passive uses pollinator plants were added to create a more contemplative diversity of color. Finally podiums located on the Northern side of the building were planted with shade growing woodland species to add a serene effect.

PROJECT BRIEF

The I-280/Wolfe Road Interchange is a key junction in Cupertino that connects people to important destinations. The improvements were funded by VTA and approved by Caltrans. The project goals were the following;

• Provide better access to the nearby Apple Park Campus and Vallco Shopping Center

• Implement complete streets elements and enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety

• Improve the area with enhanced landscaping and aesthetic elements.

I took responsibility for the projects landscaping and architectural details. The design incorporates a fully native plant palette and an aesthetic theme inspired by the surrounding landscape and history of Cupertino.

Custom Tree Grate Design

ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS

Caltrans has historically emphasized the importance of integrating aesthetic considerations into its infrastructure projects, including retaining walls and bridges. Recognizing that such structures have a profound impact on the visual character of California’s diverse landscapes, Caltrans often incorporates design elements that either blend naturally with the surrounding environment or resonate with local cultural and historical contexts. For this project I created concepts and details for designs of aesthetic treatments on MSE panels, retaining walls, bridge abutments, fencing, and concrete barriers. The designs were inspired by the surrounding rolling hillsides. This project also included custom scoring for trail head connections and a custom design for steel tree grates.

PLANTING AND IRRIGATION DESIGN

With this project I took it upon myself to create an entire planting scheme with purely native plants. Caltrans projects are often only irrigated for a certain amount of time before the system is permanently disabled. Plants need to be able to survive with almost no maintenance and supplemental irrigation. For that reason native plants are the best ones for the job. I created a planting design that utilizes a high diversity of species planted in large intermingled swatches. Planting rows conform to topography to compliment the landscape and to irrigation more efficiently. Species are arranged in a way that they knit together organically.

The irrigation design for this project was complex and highly detailed. Every valve was meticulously calculated for design flow and pressure loss. Emitters range from point source bubblers, drip line, and overhead spray depended on species, location and topography.

PROJECT BRIEF

The 101/Blossom Hill Road Interchange Improvement was a massive upgrade to this South San Jose neighborhood. It brought huge improvements to Bike and Pedestrian safety with the addition of a Class 1 Bikeway, an Undercrossing beneath the 101 on and off ramps, and a pedestrian bridge. Landscape improvements also came in the form of new plantings, decorative elements, and a 3form visual screen with a custom bike themed graphic.

I was project manager for Landscape and responsible for the delivery of all planting, irrigation, and construction detail sheets. I also created graphics for coordination and public outreach. The construction details I designed helped create a concrete pattern for a large Soil Nail Wall, custom formliners on barriers, precast slope paving concrete elements, and an aforementioned

PLANTING AND IRRIGATION

PLANTING DESIGN

One of the challenges I faced in creating a planting and irrigation plan was conforming to the rigorous Caltrans standards for drafting. All sheets had to be drafted in Microstation and follow the outline of the CAD user manual created by Caltrans. This was a especially challenging for me because it was my first Caltrans project and I was entirely new to this process. Despite that I was able to teach myself the standards and guide the design through PS&E and construction.

CONSTRUCTION ADMIN

Throughout the construction process I was also responsive to RFI and submittals provided by the contractor, and had many field inspections. I prepared exhibits to coordinate between VTA and the General Contractor when we ran into issues in the field. Many unforeseen issue came about, but I was able to help the team resolve all of them. Being so involved in the construction gave me a renewed appreciation for the built process and creating buildable designs.
