Hello PBS Michiana Supporters! I feel spring in the air! Or, is it wishful thinking? WNIT continues to make progress to bring the PBS Kids Channel to Michiana. It will be our third broadcast service. We’ve been at a technological “dead end” and need to purchase a considerable amount of equipment to go beyond our current 2-channel capability. Our goal is $750,000 and we’re almost there. If you are passionate about early childhood learning, consider being part of launching this channel. Another of Michiana PBS’s Legends of Michiana documentaries is coming in March. We will premiere the story of Joe Kernan on Thursday, March 21st at 8pm. Joe is a Vietnam war hero, former Indiana governor, South Bend mayor, minor league baseball team owner, and all around terrific guy. It’s a story you will want to watch. March brings our largest membership drive of the year. We will have special programming from March 1st through March 17th. Several programs will have ticket offers for local performances by Brit Floyd, Daniel O’Donnell, Joe Bonamassa, and Ethan Bortnick. Watch your email for a special offer from Joe Bonamassa! Season 8 of Call the Midwife premieres on Sunday, March 31st at 8pm. We pick up the story in the spring of 1964 and everyone is excited for the Queen’s royal birth. I know this series is a favorite of many! April brings a couple of programs that caught my eye. WNIT will feature Breakthrough – the Ideas that Changed the World on Wednesday, April17th at 10pm, and Boss: The Black Experience in Business on Tuesday, April 23rd at 8pm. Our Michiana PBS management team recently had a presentation of all the special programs in the PBS pipeline for 2019. We were all excited with the many, many great shows coming up, including a new Ken Burns special in September. There’s a lot to look forward to on WNIT these next two months and all of 2019. It is all possible because your support. Thank you. Please pass the word to friends, we can always use more viewers and donors! Best wishes,

Greg Giczi President & General Manager

DANIEL O’DONNELL BACK HOME AGAIN

Wednesday, June 5, 2019 Blue Gate Theatre / Shipshewana Event Center, Shipshewana, IN Daniel burst into super-stardom in the USA back in 2002 with his first ever PBS special - The Daniel O'Donnell Show. That began a special relationship between Daniel and PBS that has endured for 15 years. Now Daniel returns to Michiana performing everything from traditional Irish folk songs, a little honky-tonk flavor, songs of faith to songs of love, a little bit country and a little bit of rock and roll. He always does it with boundless enthusiasm and an open heart. WNIT has tickets in rows 11 and 12 at Blue Gate Theatre’s Shipshewana Event Center. Tickets available during Daniel O’Donnell: Back Home Again on Monday, March 4 at 8pm and Saturday, March 9 at 5:30pm

JOE BONAMASSA

Tuesday, November 5, 2019 Morris Performing Arts Center, South Bend, IN Hailed worldwide as one of the greatest guitar players of his generation, Joe Bonamassa has almost single-handedly redefined the blues-rock genre and brought it mainstream. As he enters his 29th year as a professional musician, Joe continues to blaze a remarkable artistic trail, and amass an authentic and soulful body of work. A limited number of ticket packages will be available during the broadcast of Joe Bonamassa British Blues Explosion on Monday, March 11 at 8pm and Saturday, March 16 at 10pm. "They're calling him the future of blues, but they're wrong—Joe Bonamassa is the present; so fresh and of his time that he almost defines it." —Classic Rock Magazine

Our on-air Membership Campaigns remain the most effective way of encouraging viewers to join the WNIT family of supporters. While these drives represent less than two percent of our annual broadcast hours, they do provide WNIT with the majority of revenue required to purchase and produce the regular and local programming enjoyed by everyone throughout northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. Remember to check out the diverse line-up of new pledge programming. There’s something for everyone! Production News MASTERPIECE and BBC Team Up for Epic New Event Drama Les Misérables Multi award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies will go back to the original novel and delve deep into the many layers of Hugo’s story, revelling in Jean Valjean and Javert’s cat-and-mouse relationship, against the epic backdrop of France at a time of civil unrest. With a striking intensity and relevance to us today, the novel is testimony to the struggles of France’s underclass and how far they must go to survive. The six-part television adaptation of the renowned book will vividly and faithfully bring to life the vibrant and engaging characters, the spectacular and authentic imagery and, above all, the incredible yet accessible story that was Hugo’s lifework. Dominic West (The Affair, The Hour, Appropriate Adult) will star as Jean Valjean, and David Oyelowo (Selma, A United Kingdom, Spooks) as Javert, in BBC One’s landmark drama adaptation of Les Misérables. They are joined in the epic new event drama by Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply, Love, Rosie, Tolkien), in the role of Fantine. The distinguished British cast also includes Adeel Akhtar (The Night Manager, Murdered By My Father, Utopia) and Olivia Colman (Murder On The Orient Express, The Night Manager, Broadchurch) as Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals, Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, The Nutcracker And The Four Realms) as Cosette, Josh O’Connor (The Durrells, God’s Own Country, Ripper Street) as Marius and Erin Kellyman (Raised By Wolves, Uncle, The Coopers Vs The Rest) as Éponine. Les Misérables premieres Sunday, April 14 at 9pm and runs every Sunday through May 19 on WNIT Public Television.

Legends of Michiana: Joe Kernan to Air on WNIT Public Television The Legends of Michiana documentary series focuses on people and organizations that have been influential to the growth and development of the Michiana area. Throw out the name Joe Kernan to anyone that has lived in Indiana for quite some time and they’ll immediately think of Indiana’s 48th Governor. Those in the Michiana area will remember Joe as the former Mayor of South Bend. Few know the entire background story of this amazing individual who dedicated his life to being a public servant. Joe Kernan is the oldest of nine children who grew up in South Bend, IN and graduated from St. Joseph High School (SB). He went on to become a catcher for the baseball team at the University of Notre Dame where he would graduate with a degree in Government in 1968. Following graduation, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy in 1969 and served as a Naval Flight Officer. During his service, Joe was shot down in 1972 by the enemy over North Vietnam and was confined as a prisoner of war for almost 11 months. He was returned to the US in 1973 and continued to serve in the Navy until 1974. He was given numerous awards for his courageous efforts including the Navy Commendation Medal, two Purple Hearts and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon his service completion, Joe worked for several companies before becoming South Bend’s city controller, and ultimately, winning the mayoral election of South Bend in 1987, 1991 and 1995. In 1996 and 2000, Joe and Frank O’Bannon were elected to the top two positions in Indiana government with Joe serving as Lieutenant Governor. Upon the passing of Frank O’Bannon in 2003, Joe assumed the position of Governor of Indiana. Joe and his wife, Maggie, have given so much to this community and the state of Indiana through their generosity, leadership and love for the people they have served. Join WNIT as we give viewers an inside look into the life of a true visionary and community leader. WNIT is proud to present its newest installment of the Legends of Michiana series, featuring Joe Kernan, on Thursday, March 21 at 8pm, and again, Sunday, March 24 at 6pm and Monday, April 1 at 10pm on 34.1 and Tuesday, March 26 at 9pm & Wednesday, March 27 at 10pm on 34.2

Supporter

Spotlight

Jim and Sherry Smith

WNIT is thrilled to recognize long time Director Circle members and supporters, Jim and Sherry Smith. Jim and Sherry have taken to heart that much of the support for PBS comes from “Viewers Like You”. They are happy to be a part of keeping PBS healthy and vibrant in our community. When their daughters were small, like many other children, they enjoyed Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers and The Electric Company. Now their grandchildren are enjoying many of the new shows like Sid the Science Kid and Dinosaur Train. You can find Jim and Sherry enjoying Mr. Selfridge, Downton Abbey and currently Victoria. Jim served three years as an officer in the US Air Force during the Vietnam era and retired from a long career in the medical device industry. Sherry was an elementary school teacher and also stayed at home to raise their daughters. Along with their careers, they have both been involved with supporting the efforts of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail and the New Perspectives on Faith in Goshen. When they both discovered the game of Pickleball in Tucson one winter several years ago, they helped introduce the sport to the Goshen area! WNIT is grateful for Jim and Sherry’s efforts in support of great programming and our community.
