• Desert Sands, the Marching Chargers’ competition program, features works by Duke Ellington and Sting and earns three 1st Place finishes. • Oh! The Thinks You Can Think!, the NHS Fall Concert, features choral & instrumental ensembles. • McDonald’s hosts the Marching Band for their Community Music Day fundraiser. • Renowned jazz artist Stanley Baird and his band opens the PASPort Artist Series with a free performance and discussion. • Choral students visit the ECU Invitational Choral Festival. • Choral students present Holiday Concerts at Galloway Ridge. • Band & choral ensembles present Under the Mistletoe, the holiday benefit concert for CORA Food Pantry. • Winterguard participates in four contests and the AIA Championships with their competition program, Black Swan. • Walker Harnden, senior oboist, is selected as a musician for the NC Central District All-District Band. • Gaby Mehringer, Dionna Bright, Nicole Croutwater, and Doug Horton represent NHS at the NC High School All-State Choir Festival. • Concert Band earns a Superior at the Central District Band Festival. • Six-time Grammy nominee, jazz artist Nnenna Freelon presents an evening of song and stories for the PASPort Artist Series.
DESERT SANDS 2011 NHS MARCHING CHARGERS
• 40 NHS choral students participate in the 3rd Annual Chatham All-County Choral Festival at Jordan Matthews High School. • The NHS Jazz Ensemble and NHS Voices perform at Briar Chapel’s Music in May celebration. • Other spring music includes a concert the Choral & Guitar Ensembles and the Tri-M Spring Recital. • The Concert for Memorial Day, American Spectacular, by the Concert Band & Jazz Ensemble, features premiere of Aural Essay, by music director Eugene Cottrell. Guest conductors include senior Daniel Ball and student teacher Paul Ingram. • Jazz Ensemble performs at the 2nd Annual Motors for Music Car Show & CCCC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. • Band Boosters present the Richardson Service Award to Victoria Castor. • UNCG Summer Music campers include Cailin Everson, Jeremiah Hartsock & Chelsea Koryta (chorus); Walker Harnden & Emma Reinberg (Senior Orchestra); and Madison Ponder, Kelsey O’Daniel, Josh Lyman, Emily Huneycutt, Allory Bors, & Joseph Mann (Senior Band). Anne Barone, Daniel Ball, Nick Dean, Seth Clark & Will Maag attend Matt Savage Percussion Camp. • NHS Band Camp prepares students for 2012 Fall competitions.

• Dance students attend master classes and debut new work at Meredith College’s High School Day of Dance. • Winter Dance Concerts feature performances by Leah Smith’s 78 students and a class piece choreographed by Olivia Griffin. • World-renowned Lula Washington Dance Theatre presents a master class for Chatham dancers as part of the PASPort Artist Series. • Spring Dance features works by Leah Smith and eight student choreographers. • Julia Sloane, a member of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, wins an Honorable Mention in the National Dance Education Organization’s 2012 Awards—one of seven winners from across the nation. She also receives the 2012 Bynum Front Porch Arts Grant. • Jesse C. Mathias attends NC Governor’s School to study Dance.

• Drama students attend Playmakers Repertory Company’s (PRC) performance of Shakespeare’s Henry V. David McClutchey from PRC leads master classes at NHS. • Lori Carlin attends a professional development residency at NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT). • The Acting Ensemble premieres Mirrors, written by director Lori Carlin. • Thespians and the Tri-M International Music Honor Society induct new members. • Celebrating Read Across America Month, NHS presents two previews and three performances the Annual Spring Musical, Seussical. • Carlin directs Summer Drama Camp for Chatham middle schoolers. • Senior Olivia Griffin has a lead in Playmaker’s Summer Youth Conservatory production of Urinetown. • Carlin attends the Broadway Teachers Workshop in NYC with grants from Chatham Education Foundation & NHSAEF.

• Ninety art students travel to NC Museum of Art for Rembrandt Exhibit. • PTSA grant funds new gallery space on Arts hallway. • Leslie Burwell attends three NCCAT sessions (Sept., Feb., & July) for One Amazing Year program. • Students design, produce shirts for Chorus, Relay for Life, NAHS & Art Club. • Student artists display new works at the Opening of the 19th Annual Studio Tour at Central Carolina Community College. • Winter Art Show features work from first semester visual art classes. • Scholastic Art Awards present a Gold Key to Kristen Hutchinson for photography. Asha Gowan and Rebecca Moore receive Silver Keys. Lydia Staub, Allison Stokely, Hutchinson and Moore receive Honorable Mentions. • National Art Honor Society members attend art enrichment week in Greensboro working on glass fusion and pottery. • Kristen Hutchinson is awarded 2nd place in the Congressional Art Awards Competition. Her photograph will hang in Rep. David Price’s office next year. • Leslie Burwell leads a Brush Painting Workshop for the PASPort Artist Series. • The Spring Art Show features 2nd semester work and Senior Exhibits. • National Art Honor Society inducts new members each semsester. • Arts faculty attends 30 hours curriculum training and aligns curriculum to the Essential Standards in Arts Education for Chatham County.
