Heth’s Page M6HNS We are now in 2022, and this is the start of ‘new beginnings’ for Gilmore Radio Club. There is a saying ‘the grass isn't always greener on the other side’, well from where I am standing, we are currently a light green, and hopefully by the next Gilmore Gazette, we will have gone a slightly darker shade , heading towards that lush green grass colour.

We have now started our meetings at St Marys Church Hall. The room is small, holding about 15-20 members, plenty of seating, and a constant supply of tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water.

We are so grateful for all those members that have joined GRC, and we hope you will enjoy what we have to offer. A full list of our members is in the gazette.

On the pages that follow, you will find another ‘team profile’, a members profile page, useful information about all things radio related.

We must also say a big thank you to David M0WDD for taking on the very big task of running the CW nets on various frequencies through January.

I am sure David will be putting all the information into his report which will in this gazette. There will also be news from David about his training sessions which he will be undertaking.

I would also like to thank everyone for this kind wishes to myself, Nigel 2E0CKA and Ed 2E0CFM and my family, on the loss of my Mum on January 16. Everyone’s condolences meant a lot to myself and other half Nigel (CKA), my brother in law Ed (CFM), and of course my sisterMargaret and Rachael (Marg and Ed’s daughter).

I would also like to say a big thank you to Keith M0JYP and Alan G0ROW for their continued support, even attending the funeral.

This is what true friendship is, supporting each other through the good times and the bad times.

I know I have thanked everyone above, but a very special thank you goes to Alan M6KOY, who contacted me a couple of days after the passing. With everything still very raw and numb, Alan put me at ease with only a few tears, and was saying a prayer for mum each night. For those of you that do not know - Alan was a Vicar before he retired Anyway enough from me. I hope you enjoy your second issue, and please let me know if there is anything particular you would like us to put in the gazette.

Gilmore Management Team Member Nigel Stanley 2E0CKA I moved to Manchester in 1998 to start a new job, and met and married my other half, Heth M6HNS, in early 2000's. I got chatting to Ed 2E0CFM, on a night out, and he invited me to go with him to a radio club based in Stockport (Stockport Radio Society), where they did Amateur Radio. I went along with Ed 2E0CFM, and eventually joined the club and took my foundation in 2010 (M6BBL) and my intermediate in 2012 (2E0CKA). I have also taken my full licence, missing by a few points. I will retake my full licence, but at the time work commitments stopped me from retaking it.

My XYL joined the club – sick of waiting for me to come home I think, and we both became regular members, assisting at the rallies at SRS and also becoming regulars at NARSA. In fact the three years prior to the pandemic, my XYL took all the photos for the NARSA website. I became a Committee Member of SRS as Membership Secretary, a position that I really enjoyed. Keeping in contact with all the members, and knowing their name and callsign, bringing new members into the club. Due to private reasons, I decided in late 2021 to step down from my role with SRS and also from the club. SRS has a fantastic history, and I can say I was proud to be part of that.

I had no intention of joining another club, let alone being part of a management team of a new club, but in late November 2021, along with Keith M0JYP, Alan G0ROW and my XYL Heth M6HNS we set up Gilmore Radio Club. We have been good friends for a long time, aswell as having a love of radio.

Personally I think that nets are the building blocks of any club, especially for those members who cannot get to club meetings or are unable to leave their homes. At SRS I was a Net Controller for many years, running 70cm, 2m, 6m and C4FM nets. Now as part of the team at Gilmore Radio Club, I assist with the nets when I am not on shift.

Gilmore Radio Club – the second CW Corner News with David M0WDD

Welcome to the second CW Corner News in the friendly Gilmore Radio Club. Hope members enjoyed the first CW Corner News and feedback is always welcome by GRC Group email posts. What will you find in this second CW Corner News? Here’s the agenda.

The first steps in the CW learning process

How do you get started in CW? Licensed amateurs and non-amateurs ask this question quite often.

Of course, for non-amateurs the first suggestion is that they first look on the RSGB website for licence guidance.

For a licensed amateur, then the suggestion for a complete beginner might be to get hold of a low cost morse key to use as a single switch with an audio oscillator, and try out practice CW eying. Straight “Up and Down” keys and oscillators are advertised on sites such as eBay relatively cheaply.

This practice introduces them to the idea of sending audio tone Dahs and a Dits, with the Dahs about three times as long as the Dits. If still interested, I encourage them to get a low cost paddle to start on the CW learning road. I explain that the paddle has two switches, one used to create dits and the other to create dahs, with the paddle wired to a 3.5mm jack plug, to be plugged into a rig with an electronic keyer, or into a practice electronic keyer with an audio tone sounder.

Today most rigs do have a built in electronic keyer, with a key socket for either a paddle or a straight key. The Op selects the key type in rig settings, and can key the rig to practice CW by ensuring the Break (BK) setting is off.

The great benefit of using a paddle is that the rig keyer automatically sets the dahs at 3 times longer than dits, leaving the user to concentrate on keying. The rig can be set for required CW keying speed.

Learning CW is not easy for most people and it takes practice – lots and lots of practice. Most people CAN learn CW with commitment practice and a positive attitude.

Using free online CW learning recourses can help in this process be a very effective way to learn CW. Here are some tips on useful websites.

Suggested CW training websites If you are looking to learn or relearn CW, all these websites offer beginners and more advanced CW learning, all free, but you will also need to do lots of practice as you progress. All offer a free CW learning account, have nothing to install, and are accessible on most devices with internet access.

1. Learn CW Online at https://lcwo.net/ Long established, 40 beginners lessons, lots of exercises, choice of Koch or Farnsworth learning methods, graphical progress tracking.

2. Morsecode World at https://morsecode.world/ Recently established, follows CW Ops Beginners course of 13 sessions, can customise exercises, good progress tracking, head copy focus.

3. Morse Code Ninja at https://morsecode.ninja/ Recently established, very unique, lots of practice exercises online and downloadable, variable speeds, links to Youtube videos of practice sessions, listening and head copy focus.

There are also many other excellent CW learning websites such as Lockdown Morse, which is a Youtube based series of 18 learning videos. Head Copy focus.

The first steps in the CW learning process Starting to learn CW is all about learning the CW sound pattern for each character. We do this by listening to the CW pattern of individual characters, many times. We start with letters of the alphabet, and add the numbers, and add the prosigns (special symbols such as ? and /). There are around 46 such sound patterns to learn in total. This is the HARD SLOG – but it is worth it!

Most CW learning programmes start with the characters with the shortest code, such as one Dit for “e” and one Dah for “t”, and then a DitDah for “a” and a DahDit for “n” and so on.

Listening to the CW sound pattern for a character, repeatedly, helps you memorise and embed the character’s sound pattern in your brain’s subconscious. Once there, when you hear the CW sound pattern, you can recall the character instantly – hence the term “Instant Character Recognition” or ICR. 14

The key to learning CW is lots of regular practice listening to CW characters, and the aim is ICR. A little practice every day when you are not tired is far better than missing several days and then doing a lengthy practice all at once to catch up.

If you find you cannot recall a character instantly when you hear the CW for that character– you need to practice that character more. Everyone learning CW goes through this experience!

Doing this, you gradually reduce the characters you miss.

For example listening to the letter “D”, we should hear DahDitDit and the aim is to recognise this single sound pattern as “D”. This will only happen with lots of CW listening practice, but it will happen.

If we hear the CW too slowly, for example as Dah then Dit then Dit, the brain hears each Dah or Dit separately, and checks its memory for the Dah and Dit combination, to figure out that this means “D”.

We refer to this extra figuring out by the brain, as using a lookup table to find the correct character. Learning CW this way can cause an upper speed limit in your ability to copy CW, as the brain can only do this figuring out up to a certain speed.

Learning CW by first memorising each character CW sound pattern at a relatively fast CW speed has no such recall limitations.

This is why most CW learning programmes start you listening to CW at a relatively fast character speed but with longer gaps between characters and words. Then as the learning progresses, the gaps reduce.

In my experience this does work!

The process requires every licence holder to confirm or update the details on the Ofcom licence database.

It is important to be registered with and be able to access the Ofcom Online Licensing System. This enables revalidation, amendments and other functions including Exam-pass and Special Event callsign applications.

If you are not registered, once you become invalid and exceed a cooling-off period, your call sign becomes potentially available for reassignment to others.

Don’t let that happen! Keep your details up-to-date and make a diary reminder to renew each year.

Full Licence note: Any 5MHz/60m usage has an explicit licence requirement for a current (preferably mobile) phone number to be stored on the database as well.

If you need further assistance in the process, Ofcom staff are available to help, but please be patient during times of heavy workload.

Members Page Paul (Paddy) Roche - 2E0TWD After the first Club Meeting where we discussed being an open, helpful and friendly club I thought it might be a good idea to introduce ourselves and maybe outline our current interests in the Hobby and anything we may wish to learn about going forward.

Obviously, this would be a voluntary exercise. With that in mind here is my intro.

I became interested in Radio generally in late 2015 after a friend had shown me a handheld scanner, the Uniden UBC125XLT. Impressed I bought one and played around with it and listened in on Conversations, Taxi companies and Aircraft etc. Within a few months I was starting to think that the conversations I was hearing were quite interesting and I’d like to join in. I set about searching the internet for all things radio and immersed myself in it. It wasn’t long before I ‘googled’ some letters a chap kept saying and the result was QRZ.com. Armed with the information I set about finding a club to get my licence, in the mean time I bought a CB and had a play with that on the high ground and was talking to people in Europe, I was hooked. I bought a Yaesu FT450D with a view to getting a licence.

In mid 2016 I passed my Foundation and my intermediate in 2018. I quickly became interested in Yaesu system fusion so traded up for a Yaesu 991A and an FTM100D for my car, until my Stepson bought me an FTM400XD which I still have. I am mentioning the radio’s in case any one has any of these models and needs any help with them. As time passed and I learnt more and Spent even more!!! I bought an Icom IC7300 and sold the 991A. I also bought and IC9700 second hand but then traded that for an IC705. I also had a DVMega but it wasn’t my thing so I sold it. I am happy to help anyone who has one though.

My main interest in the hobby currently is Raspberry pi, Zero and Pico and learning to program them etc. I have recently built a “DigiPi” a little project by KM6LYW which runs Digital modes in a web browser APRS, Winlink, FT8 and more. It’s quite a simple thing but works well and inspired me to look further into it all.

When operating I love HF and DX’ing SSB and I enjoy 2m nets etc…. I haven’t been active for some time but I am moving soon and hope to change that. I also Admin the Charlie Tango DX Group Forum and Facebook Page. Charlie Tango is a group open to all facets of Radio, CB, Amateur, SWL etc.. (although primarily CB to be honest, so don’t shoot the messenger) For the future I look forward to getting to grips with CW (I hope, lol) and then who knows…. There is so much to do/learn in this hobby.

GRC Club Log Just seven weeks into cub log and Keith M0JYP is top of the all mode and phone contacts with 83 slots and 44 countries worked, close behind myself AL G0ROW with 72 slots and 40 countries followed by mainly CW contacts David M0WDD 30 slots and 17 countries and nice to see Nigel 2E0CKA doing well with his new radio FTDX10 with 13 slots and 9 countries on data Steve 2E0WIT with 1 slot and 1 country.

The main two bands 20m and 40m are producing some very good DX. There have been a few nice openings on 15m 12m and 10m Keith has done well on 15m with 22 contacts on this band we have noticed that some of the stations are not too strong but are workable l manage on 15m a new country for me the Seychelles S79VU, also have a look on 6m there should be some openings late afternoons as we move into the spring 50.075 to 50.270MHz USB. #Talk #Dontbelonely When the pandemic started, and I was sending information out to my members at the other club, I used the above hashtags on everything. For those of you who know me, I can talk, but sometimes felt that things were getting on top of me, especially towards the end of 2021.

As you will know, I recently lost my dear mum, and although I am normally the one that will be in floods of tears at a three legged cat with one eye, I felt on the night of the passing, that I was quite strong, and roles were reverse with my sister.

Through the close friends I have with Keith M0JYP and Alan G0ROW, and other members of the club, Paddy 2E0TWD, Alan M6KOY and many others, I have found that #talking has been a great help. Just after mums passing, I didn't want to go on the nets, but I did, and everyone made me feel better, and with the help of Nigel 2E0CKA my other half, Ed 2E0CFM, my sister and neice, I will get through it.

The reason for this little article is to ask people to #talk and #dontbelonely. Your team is always on the end of the phone, or on a net for you to chat to. Just give us a call or shout (normally on 145.375) and someone will be around.
