Autumn|Winter New and fresh voices for Southampton Welcome back to The Nuffield for a fabulous and extraordinarily diverse season! We are delighted to be opening the Autumn with a UK premiere of one-act COMEDIES BY WOODY ALLEN, directed by Patrick Sandford. Later in the season, the magical, the mystical and the miserly are brought to life on The Nuffield stage, in our Christmas show, Dickens’ family favourite A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Other Nuffield shows include our two studio shows (touring nationally), both set in World War II. SHELTER tells the story of three strangers taking refuge in a climate of hatred and fear, and BLITZ is a unique participation experience for children aged 5 - 11, who are placed in role as evacuees. Alongside our own shows, we are thrilled to present some of the most exciting companies in the UK. Highlights include: • The welcome return of English Touring Theatre, soaking up the Trinidadian sunshine in RUM AND COCA COLA • The first visit to Southampton by the award-winning Gecko with their visually stunning retelling of THE OVERCOAT • Out of Joint’s boisterous and witty THE BIG FELLAH, uniting award-winning writer Richard Bean with leading director Max Stafford-Clark • The return of Look Left Look Right, who enthralled audiences last season with The Caravan, with COUNTED? - set in Southampton’s Bargate Monument • A site-specific performance from The Clod Ensemble - UNDER GLASS -which is a truly unforgettable, startling and rare experience - don’t miss it! • Outrageous fun in Penny Dreadful’s THE MISSIONARY’S POSITION For theatre with a difference, why not try one of our studio productions? Turn to pages 20 - 22 to find out more. Plus, there’s stand-up comedy (including JULIAN CLARY - book early to avoid disappointment), children’s theatre, workshops and youth theatre. Ellen MacArthur Live! Full Circle 13 September A special event to mark the publication of Ellen’s book, Full Circle, which tells the amazing story of her last ten years. For the first time Ellen reflects on her spectacular, record-breaking, non-stop solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2005. She will share her memories of this incredible human feat, from the 100ft high waves and unimaginable storms to the final nail-biting race against the clock. But she will also explain her decision to retire from competitive sailing at the end of last year. She will tell us about a fateful trip to South Georgia and how it uncovered a new all-consuming passion that has changed her life. Could there be an even tougher challenge for Ellen than racing solo round the globe? Ellen- who has strong links with Southampton and The Solent - will be signing copies of Full Circle after the performance.

“David, try and understand - apart from the sex it was platonic” Jenny defends her illicit affair with Woody Allen logic. Short plays all about wicked relationships, in and out of marriage… A twilight encounter on the Manhattan riverside and surprise arrivals at a summer barbeque show us men and women grappling comically, frantically, and with glorious imagination in the spiky search for happiness. The plays share a second subject: Story telling. How does a writer turn life to fiction? The predicaments are hazardously funny and the plotting unexpected and ingenious. Just as in his films, Woody Allen brilliantly balances irony, savagery, and laughter.

They survive on their ‘refreshment capital’, living at the end of the beach amongst driftwood, fallen coconut trees and empty rum bottles. In a futile government department reminiscent of Chaplin’s Modern Times - Akakki falls in love with the beautiful Natalia. His feelings for her are not returned; this drives him to be the best and win the ultimate office prize - The Overcoat - revered by all as a symbol of success. But how far is Akakki willing to go? And at what cost? Get the coat, get the girl, change the world! Gecko has used Gogol’s story as a germ to infect and inspire this piece which has evolved and cultured over two years whilst touring to Brazil, Colombia, South Korea, Israel and China. What you’ll love… How do the Civil Rights leaders’ experiences relate to modern-day British struggles for equality and inclusion? A passionate subject for the thinking person… 12

Behind the icons, are the men. Behind the myths, are the human struggles that change the course of history. It’s Valentine’s Day in Harlem, 1965. Malcolm X has returned from the UK to an America seething with violence and hatred. His house has been fire-bombed and in one week’s time, he will be assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom. But tonight, separated from his family and with a death warrant on his head, he will risk the scorn of his followers to meet with the iconic leader whose philosophy he has so fiercely opposed: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Taking place just days after Malcolm X’s electrifying visit to England, this highly imagined encounter captures the individual humanity, political maturity and enduring integrity of two men who would ultimately give their lives for freedom. More than a play, this dramatic event takes audiences to the heart of the civil rights movement and to the centre of the debate that still rages today.

Featuring choreography by 2006 Place Prize winner Nina Rajarani MBE, and magnetic live music created by composer and vocalist Y Yadavan, LOVE IS IN THE AIR is a collaboration with aerial specialists from Scarabeus. The piece tackles the sensitive issue of gangs in the UK while celebrating the loyalty and solidarity shared by friendship groups.

What you’ll love… Terrific story, award-winning choreographer, aerial dance, and live music!

This theatrical experience begins at 7.30pm with a 15 minute pre-show exhibition, and the performance is followed by a post-show discussion. 13

Don’t Shoot The Clowns by Paul Hodson Inspired by Jo Wilding’s book The Future is Unwritten and Fuel How do we really know what goes on in the world? Whose stories do we believe? In 1999 J smacks Tony Blair in the back with a well aimed tangerine - she’s protesting about the horrors in Iraq caused by UN sanctions. ‘How do you really know?’ challenges a journalist. J goes to Iraq to find out. Three years later she goes back… with a circus. Under Glass

Counted?

Clod Ensemble produced by Fuel

The votes are in, but do the people of Britain really feel counted? In spite of pre-election hype in Britain, this year’s voter turn out remained low. As we review our democratic policy, COUNTED? tells the timely story of how democracy isn’t just about what we do at the ballot box. This verbatim documentary play takes us to the heart of what democracy really means by sharing the voices and experiences of real people from all walks of life. Revealing, humorous and entertaining, it dramatises interviews and academic research, to look at the concept of choice and the factors that influence us. What gets a rise from us and what makes us feel like we don’t matter? An engrossing and arresting production, whoever you voted for, whether you voted or not, it asks the ultimate question, ‘What does it mean to be Counted?’

UNDER GLASS is an enthralling site specific performance in which a collection of extraordinary human beings are contained in a series of glass jars and cabinets. Blending visual imagery, choreography, an original score by Paul Clark and text by TS Eliot Awardwinning poet Alice Oswald. Each character exists within their own delicate environment: a woman in a jam jar, a shy ‘wallflower’ pinned behind a glass panel, a man clockwatching in his office. Under Glass is an animated exhibition of human life. At once medical laboratory, museum exhibit and gallery, UNDER GLASS lifts characters out of the hurly burly of everyday life and frames their moments of solitude; examining human beings attempting, with varying success, to live within their limits. Commissioned by Sadler’s Wells, UNDER GLASS won the Total Theatre Award: Visual & Physical Theatre, 2009. Supported by a Wellcome Trust People Award.

Black Bread and Cucumber Written and performed by Caroline Blakiston

As lightening flashes across the sky, the rugged silhouette of an old dark house looms into view. Lost in a storm, this seems like the only possible refuge - but what happens when you hear mysterious moaning in the middle of the night? Behind every door lurks unimaginable horror…. Compared to Peepolykus and Spymonkey, Gonzo Moose consist three fearless and daring actors who play over 20 roles in a gripping and fast paced comedy with horrific experiments, mind-boggling love, and a sensational death-defying finale.

ETIQUETTE is a half-hour experience for two people in a public space. There is no-one watching - other people in the café or bar are not aware of it. You wear headphones which tell you what to say to each other, or to use one of the objects positioned to the side. There is a kind of magic involved - for it to work you just need to listen and respond accordingly. ETIQUETTE is theatre at its most raw; it is live, insightful, philosophical and incredibly unique. The participants are both the actors and the audience, and the show offers the fantasy of being able to speak without having to think what to say.

“ Etiquette explores the gap between language and meaning. In creating an entirely private space in a public setting, something extraordinary happens.” The Guardian

The 10th anniversary presentation of Caroline Blakiston’s acclaimed one-woman show about how she made history as the first British actress to play Chekhov in Russia, in Russian. BLACK BREAD AND CUCUMBER was written during 1992-1993, following Caroline’s unique experience playing Charlotta in The Cherry Orchard in Russian. First in 1991 at the Dramatichesky Teatr in Taganrog - the town on the Sea of Azov in southern Russia where Anton Chekov was born. Then, in 1992 at the Moscow Art Theatre in the longrunning production by Oleg Yefremov.

Jeremy’s perhaps best remembered as a much younger man, but there is nothing he can do about that now. Still alive and able to speak unaided for lengthy periods, this show will be not so much be a one-man show as an under-staffed cavalcade.

The Comedy Bar BIG GIG

Held in the intimate space of The Nuffield Studio, The Comedy Bar plays host to a mix of the best established and up and coming acts on the comedy circuit. This month’s headliner is AVA VIDAL - star of Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Channel 4’s Alternative Election Night, The News Quiz, Kings of Comedy (E4) and performer at the biggest comedy clubs all over the world.

Back for the fifth year, after sell out shows 2007-2010, don’t miss this year’s BIG GIG with four of our favourite acts from the comedy circuit.

A Man With No More Rolls “Sheffield’s finest synthesizer player and twaddle talker” (The Telegraph) decides it’s time to instruct the Nation in moral matters, but next door neighbour and sole agent Ken Worthington’s sloppily typed email to the printers has caused an error in the title of this show turning “morals” into “more rolls”. But John’s quite happy about that as it will allow him to also discuss the vast range of new breads available like Panini, Ciabatta, and the Peshwari Nan (John recently enjoyed a bite of Ken’s - “It absolutely blew me away”).

A comic love letter, and a preamble through the Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner’s brilliantly insane mind, this show has a giant twist in its tail…as always, nothing is as it seems… Hilarious, heartbreaking…don’t miss it.

“ Absolutely the smartest thing I have ever seen in the comedy section” The Scotsman “ Nothing short of remarkable” The Stage Time 7.30pm

Malina’s Dream -

The Nuffield studio is transformed into the blitzravaged Britain of 1942, in this unique participation experience for 5 - 11 year olds. The children are placed in role as evacuees fleeing enemy bombs, as they board a train bound for the countryside. Immersed in this world they must navigate their new life - a life of rations, gas masks, strange new sights (Cows! Fields!) and a very different experience of school. Making difficult decisions and learning to adapt to the changes that confront them, the choices the children make will affect the story that they tell - no two performances will be the same.

THE BACCHAE explores the battle between the wild and the tame that rages in every human heart and lies at the core of every choice we make. By putting music, movement and poetry at its anarchic heart, this production reconnects with the elemental nature of a story that has captured imaginations both ancient and modern.

Don’t just watch, respond. Come and see a selection of our shows and let us know what you think. Produce writing (creative or analytical) about what you’ve seen. Attend sessions lead by Nuffield staff and guest artists to discuss the productions you’ve seen. Suitable for those interested in directing, reviewing, dramaturgy or anyone who just wants to talk about theatre.

How The Other Half Loves

by Anton Chekhov Directed by Ken Hann Arguably the first modernist drama, Anton Chekhov’s depiction of the breakdown of a dysfunctional and loosely structured family full of “might-have-been” characters is a closely observed tragi-comedy set in the dying days of Tsarist Russia. It is a story full of unrequited love and idle intrigues where all the protagonists are locked in a system of illusions in order to protect themselves not only from others but from themselves. Considered by many to be Chekhov’s best loved and best composed play. A delicate balance of the tragic and absurd the play is, at its core, a beautifully moving love story which still resonates with today’s audiences.

Times 7.30pm

by Georges Bizet Let yourself be transported to Spain, a colourful land of gypsies, smugglers, soldiers and bullfighters as Southampton Operatic Society presents the world’s favourite opera - Bizet’s CARMEN. Carmen, a beautiful gypsy - wild with a fiery temper - tempts and taunts Don Jose, the inexperienced soldier, into mutiny, smuggling and finally murder. A rollercoaster of love, passion, jealousy and violence all encompassed in this beautiful work of sentimentality mixed with stark realism. The fantastic musical score guarantees to provide the perfect evening’s entertainment, including famous pieces such as “Habanera” and the Duet, Gypsy, Flower and Toreador songs. Translated into English by the society, this is a night of passion not to be missed!

by Alan Ayckbourn Directed by Bridget Wilkinson

Three couples, two dinner parties and one furtive affair form the basis of Ayckbourn’s deliciously fast paced, thought provoking comedy exploring marriage, infidelity and social class. Bob has been having an affair with Fiona, the Boss’s wife, but now they are about to be found out! Anxious to hide their deceit, and with no time to think, the guilty pair invent bogus alibis in the unsuspecting Mary and William Featherstone. When the Featherstones are then inadvertently invited to dinner, a catalogue of misunderstandings and lies lead to highly comical and sometimes startling consequences.
