Welcome to our family, and to the Royal College of General Practitioners New Members' and Fellows‘ Ceremony in Edinburgh. We are delighted to welcome you and your guests to this very special occasion. Congratulations.

Sometimes you might think, 'What does the College do for me?' I encourage you to come and find out. The College has a lot to offer. Having professional networks is a key means of career development and personal well-being.

What a wonderful profession you are entering, one you have all worked so hard to reach. Despite the difficulties we hear about in general practice, it continues to be the most exciting, fulfilling, flexible, and, best of all the medical specialities (if not the most challenging). It is a profession which has sustained me for more than 30 years.

One in which I have loved and not just survived but thrived, as you will throughout your career. Thank you for choosing general practice and thank you to all those who have supported you during your journey towards today.

We are here for you, whether to help with your continuing professional development, provide peer support, guidance from others at different career stages, clinical interest groups, or new professional opportunities.

The RCGP also advocates for our profession and wants to hear your views and ideas.

I would like to say a special thank you to those here today who undertook your primary medical qualification overseas.

Not only have you had to make so many sacrifices along the way, leaving your family, friends, communities and country to come and work with us here, but you have also had to learn the complexities of our health system, something that still confuses me after nearly 40 years of working in it. You are the backbone of the NHS, thank you. But all of you.

Thank you for all your hard work and dedication and the sacrifices you have made during your training.

I hope today that you will all leave feeling proud of what you have achieved and will want to get involved with the College going forward. There are many opportunities for you. The College is here for you and will provide you with your professional home throughout your career.

As your President, I am elected to represent you, our members. I am delighted to meet many of you in person today finally. You deserve your award! As the College motto says, 'Cum Scientia Caritas' – compassion with knowledge. Being a GP is a vocation – I know that can be an oldfashioned concept today, but I believe it is.

You interact with the patient as a human being. You make them your first concern and enter the swampy lowlands with them, where there are no technical solutions, just your compassion and communication skills.

You deserve to be cared for in exchange, and this is what the College will do for you.

It will care, support, and help you and be there as you do this vital work. Well done!

This will be one of my last engagements as President of this wonderful College. Thank you for making it so special.

New Members’ and Fellows' Ceremony

The College Coat of Arms The elements of the College coat of arms are explained below: the owl is a symbol of wisdom. the shield, separated by a chevron, symbolises the roof of the house in which most general practice takes place. One side is white to represent day and the other black to represent night.

The three spaces are occupied by a white poppy, signifying relief of pain and suffering; a gentian flower indicating medicine and the restorative and rehabilitative role of the GP; and, finally, the Greek lamp indicates the importance of study and research in the work of the College and links with the lamp of nursing.

the unicorn is adopted from the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. the lynx is adopted from the arms of the Royal College of Surgeons. the gavel symbolises authority. the serpent is the ancient symbol of medicine.

The College arms were granted in 1961 by the College of Arms in England (a separate but almost identical coat of arms was approved by the Lord Lyon in Scotland).

The President’s chain was gifted to the College in 1958.

The College motto Cum Scientia Caritas – compassion with knowledge.

Robes and insignia The current President’s gown was instigated in 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of the College. It has incorporated the College arms and reflects the College blue of our modern logo.

It is cast in 9-carat yellow and white gold and consists of a medallion of a white-gold poppy, entwined with a yellow-gold foxglove and serpents in white gold.

The medallion of the College coat of arms was added in 1963.

The Members’ gown is black with white facing.

The Chair of Council wears a badge that incorporates the College arms with the names of all previous College Chairs on the ribbon in gold.

The Royal Charter

An organisation or other body can only be recognised as an independent legal entity if it has been granted either a Royal Charter or a Memorandum and Articles of Association by the Board of Trade.

It would be fair to say that there was more than a little resistance to the formation of an independent College of General Practitioners in the early 1950s – not least by the three London based medical royal colleges then in existence. In view of this, the College’s founders were advised to seek a Memorandum and Articles rather than a Royal Charter – as this was a process that was less likely to be challenged by others.

Such Articles of Association were granted in 1952.

The plan had always been to apply for a Royal Charter and this was duly granted in 1967. It was formally presented to the College in 1972 when HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, became the College’s first royal president.

In common with other Royal Charters, the charter is a vellum document with a large wax seal attached to it. It is a valuable document and is currently kept in the climate controlled College archives. It is only displayed on very special occasions.

There are a vast array of opportunities for you to grow and develop over the coming years.

We are Dr David Shackles and Dr Chris Williams, Joint Chairs of RCGP Scottish Council. As some of you may be aware, we will demit from office tomorrow, and so this will be our last event as Joint Chairs. We both agree that there is no better way to end our term than by welcoming so many new members and Fellows of the College. It really is a privilege to be with you and your families today to celebrate your success.

Here in the College, we want to nurture your enthusiasm and provide you with a professional home which encourages your continual professional development throughout your career. We currently support around 54,000 members across the UK and beyond, including Fellows, Associates and Associates-in-Training.

5,000 of these are based here in Scotland.

We immensely enjoy engaging with members through a diverse range of events the College hosts throughout the year. We maintain networks and aim to provide plenty of opportunities for education, networking and professional development. We support a range of events from small local gatherings to national meetings with remote participation. To keep up to date, make sure to read our fortnightly members bulletin for information on events happening across the College.

Please take this day as an opportunity to celebrate your well-earned accomplishments with family and friends. For our new members, your attendance means you have reached your goal of becoming a fully qualified GP. I hope during the course of the proceedings today you are able to take a moment to reflect upon the breadth of this achievement and the significance of reaching this milestone in your career. Similarly, for those of you here today receiving a Fellowship from the College, your excellence in general practice and your many contributions are today being recognised. Your College is a group of likeminded professionals, many of whom have already used their generalist skills to pursue interesting and diverse medical careers. As new members of our College, these are now your colleagues too, and they are here to support and guide you to achieve your goals. Welcome to First5 As you embark on your journey as a newly qualified GP, you’re entering a dynamic and rewarding field of healthcare. My humble aim is to guide you through some essential principles that will help you make the most of your membership and professional experience.

Keep connected with your peers One of the most significant advantages of being part of this community is the opportunity to connect with fellow professionals. In Scotland, we host regular "Meet and Connect" events, where you'll have the chance to forge valuable connections, share experiences, and learn from others. Building a network within your profession can offer support, open doors to collaboration, and provide a sense of belonging. So, don't miss these events – they are not just social gatherings but opportunities for personal and professional growth. Believe me, there are plenty of events happening out there. If you can’t find one, then organise one; I will be the first to sign up.

Don't be afraid to test your limits Your journey as a GP is a continuous process of learning and growth. Never shy away from pushing your limits and embracing new challenges. Each patient you encounter, each case you handle, is a chance to expand your skills and knowledge. Remember that it's okay to face uncertainty, but it's through these experiences that you'll develop into a more resilient and confident practitioner.

We encourage you to seek opportunities to learn and adapt in this ever-evolving field.

Know your representatives and get in touch with them Understanding the structure and support system of the College is essential.

We have representatives who are here to assist and advocate for you.

If you ever have questions, concerns, or ideas, don't hesitate to reach out. Knowing your reps and engaging in open dialogue can help you make the most of your membership, as we’re here to represent your interests.

Represent the region you work in Consider taking an active role in representing your region. Your perspective as a young GP is invaluable, and your input can shape the future of our profession. By getting involved, you can influence policies, initiatives, and improvements that directly impact your practice and your patients.

Dr Abdul Samad is a family physician, practicing in Abu Dhabi. He has special interests in diabetes and health education. He would like to thank his parents and wife for their love and support and a special thanks to his son.

Miriam Duncumb Dr Duncumb is currently on maternity leave from work as a GP at Lothian Unscheduled Care Service. Her special interests are women's health and medical education. She would like to thank her husband for his support.

Tony Edet Dr Edet’s story is one of trials and triumphs, of God’s faithfulness and glory, and this adds to the list. He sends his love to family, friends and teachers, including the College.

Shihani Marika Elayakumar Dr Elayakumar works as a salaried GP in Cumbria. She would like to thank her partner and her parents who are her biggest support system.

Dr Brooks works as a GP Partner in Thurso and also works as a Forensic Physician in Highland. She would like to thank her husband and family for their endless support.

Dr McAuley works as Training Programme Director for NHS Education for Scotland and as a GP Partner in Kirkintilloch. He is grateful for all the help and support from his wife over the last 30 years, and to be able to continue this work in practice and medical education.

Helen Jervis Dr Jervis is a GP Partner in a rural practice in Cumbria. She has been instrumental in the wider locality and PCN Clinical Management and was awarded Cumbria GP of the year 2023.

Dr MacLeod has been a GP for 40 years, and in Carluke for almost 25. She would like to thank her parents, husband and four children for all their support and encouragement throughout her career.

Dr Rhodes works as a GP in Hull and is a GP Trainer, Training Programme Director, Appraiser and Mentor. She is grateful for the support of her husband and children over her years as a GP.

Lloyd Thompson

Dr Rose is a GP in Livingston with an interest in chronic disease management and multi-disciplinary team mentoring.

Her Fellowship recognises her role as an Appraiser and Undergraduate Medical Educator. She is grateful for wonderful mentors throughout her career.

Dr Thompson is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Dundee.

He is passionate about medical education and has various responsibilities within the MBChB degree. He would like to thank his wife and two lovely, but energetic, boys for all their love and support.
