Preface

Meine Stücke „Der Wolf“ und „Struct“ entstanden auf Flügen zwischen New York, Los Angeles und München. Inspiriert durch eine Autofahrt, die mich auf dem Weg von New York nach Ithaca durch scheinbar endlose Waldstücke führte, komponierte ich das Stück „Der Wolf“ für Kontrabass und Klavier.

My pieces The Wolf and Struct were created on flights between New York, Los Angeles and Munich. Inspired by a car ride that took me through seemingly endless woodland on the way from New York to Ithaca, I composed the piece The Wolf for double bass and piano.

„Der Wolf, der mit seinen gelb funkelnden Augen durch die dichten Wälder streift… sich an seine Beute schleicht… um dann in voller Größe in der Lichtung des Waldes aufzutauchen… das aufgeregte Beutetier, das flink durch das Unterholz huscht… Eine Verfolgungsjagd im Wald!“ Der Klavierpart in drei Fassungen wurde von dem Pianisten Thomas Hartmann, der mich auf der Fahrt nach Ithaca begleitete, komponiert. Eine Fassung, passend zum Kontrabass in Orchesterstimmung, eine Fassung für den Kontrabass in Solostimmung und eine „Easy Version“ für noch weniger erfahrene Pianisten. „Der Wolf“ kann auch als Solostück sowohl am Kontrabass als auch am E-Bass gespielt werden. „Struct“ steht als Kurzform des Wortes „Construction“, also einer Konstruktion. Ein Stück für junge und jung gebliebene Kontrabassisten, konstruiert auf dem Rhythmus des Songs „Smoke on the Water“, dem legendären Hit der Band „Deep Purple“. Gewidmet ist es meinem Schüler Felix, dem ich eine Komposition versprochen hatte. Auch der Klavierpart zu „Struct“ stammt von Thomas Hartmann. Beide Werke sind so komponiert, dass sie die Voraussetzungen für die Duo-Wertung im Wettbewerb „Jugend Musiziert“ erfüllen. Im Januar 2018 wurden „Der Wolf“ und „Struct“ bereits erfolgreich im Rahmen dieses Wettbewerbs aufgeführt. Claus Freudenstein

“The wolf gliding through the dense woods with its yellow sparkling eyes ... sneaking up on its prey ... and then appearing full size in the clearing of the forest ... the nervous prey itting swiftly through the undergrowth ... a chase in the woods!” The piano part in three versions was composed by the pianist Thomas Hartmann, who accompanied me on the trip to Ithaca: a version suitable for the double bass in orchestral tuning, a version for the double bass in solo tuning, and an “easy version“ for less experienced pianists. The Wolf can be played as a solo piece both on the double bass and the electric bass. „Struct“ stands as a short form of the word “construction.” A piece for young and young-at-heart double bass players, it’s based on the rhythm of the song Smoke on the Water, the legendary hit from the band Deep Purple . It is dedicated to my pupil Felix, to whom I had promised a composition. Also, the piano part to Struct comes from Thomas Hartmann. Both works are composed in such a way that they meet the requirements for the duo rating in the German competition Jugend Musiziert . In January 2018, The Wolf and Struct were successfully listed in the competition. Claus Freudenstein
