maria kelly giles | interior design Design Philosophy

Design should complement the fluidity of our daily lives. We need spaces to stimulate well-being, provoke liveliness and provide comfort for varying lifestyles. As designers, we can accomplish these goals by understanding client needs and striving to deliver above and beyond their expectations.

office design|mental health america Objective In partners of two, the team was assigned to a client and a building space. Our location was the Pantorium located in the heart of the historic downtown area of Ames, IA. The main focus of this project was to design an adequate office interior and also earning LEED points for certification. The building design was to be as sustainable as possible. The scope of sustainablity was from green roofs to post-consumer recycled materials.

Client

Mental Health America is a non-profit company that offers a scope of services. They are advocates for the mentally disabled, have prevention, detection and treatment for substance dependentusers, educational outreach to the community, and promote social justice for those with mental or substance disabilities.

Color, material, and pattern will create harmonious chi that enhances personal light with creative and supportive energy. We used the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui as a guide throughout the project. We designed the space by taking aspects from feng shui and abstracting concepts, shapes and color theory to help stimulate the interior enviornemnt. We used the shape of the bagua for space configuration and then we used the bagua color association to color code the space accordingly.

The team’s inital presentation consisted of images that reflected aspects of fire, wind, water, earth and wood. We then generated a few inspiration sketches that helped depict what was in our minds about the general outcome of our design concept.
