The mission of Gilda’s Club Westchester is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

Leadership Message

Dear Friends of Gilda’s Club,

Over the last two years, Gilda’s Club Westchester has adapted to our ever-changing world and has reached more underserviced and vulnerable populations by successfully transitioning to a hybrid model of delivering social and emotional support for those impacted by cancer. We are proud to have expanded our reach through virtual sessions and to serve almost 5000 active members

Your generosity and commitment to our mission to support, educate and empower cancer patients and their families has been vital for our continued growth in all areas our program offerings, our diversity, the increased number of new members served, and the incredible response we receive from our members. Over the past two years, your support has allowed us to offer over 2600 programs, conduct over 1000 support group sessions and to provide over 1600 counselling sessions, representing significant growth over the offerings from the previous twoyear period

We believe that no one should face cancer alone – whether they are diagnosed with cancer, a caregiver, a family member, or have lost a loved one to cancer Our welcoming community has always been available to everyone impacted by cancer – 100% free of charge

THE NEW GILDA'S CLUB TEEN CENTER & NOOGIELAND

In 2019, Gilda’s Club Westchester generously received a $100,000 Transformational Project Grant from Impact100 to create a safe space to help teens/tweens manage their cancer journey. Louis Cappelli generously matched this grant with an additional $100,000 which gave GCW the opportunity to also transform our space for children under 12 years old, known as Noogieland.

GCW then secured the services of the incredible design team, Project Playroom, to bring the spaces to life with their creative and innovative playroom designs. Next to join our mission and elevate the entire process, was the NBC TV show, George to the Rescue, where host George Oliphant completes surprise renovations for deserving families and organizations facing unique challenges.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, renovations were placed on hold, however the longawaited transformation was finally completed in March of 2022. Both spaces underwent amazing transformations, each showcasing their own unique and creative style appealing to the children and teens who will receive support in these spaces. In Noogieland, the bright and colorful space is complete with a functioning rock wall, a “happy place” for imaginative play, a lounge area, a Lego wall, and art tables. The teen center has a happy and inviting feel with a comfortable lounge room, a fully stocked art room, and an outdoor space with seating and activities like foosball and a toss game All spaces are also equipped with smart TVs with Zoom that provide the functionality to provide hybrid programming, allowing GCW to reach more children and teens from home. GCW is excited to use these newly renovated spaces and offer free in-person and virtual programming to children and teens impacted by cancer

IMPACT: outreach and under-resourced communities

Gilda’s Club Westchester is committed to offering culturally appropriate, trauma-informed programming that is sensitive to the needs of the communities we serve. We are particularly focused on expanding programming to under-resourced communities, including Black, Indigenous, People of Color; the LGBTQIA community; and the Latinx community, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

During the past two years, connecting with Hispanic communities, particularly in the River Towns, has been a key focus of our outreach efforts Our collaborations with local organizations and medical groups serving the Spanish-speaking community inspire us to design and deliver relevant programs to address unique challenges and reduce barriers to care, including such topics as “Cancer 101”, locating financial resources, the importance of cancer screenings, communicating with your medical team, making treatment decisions, and living with uncertainty after a cancer diagnosis

Our clinical program has also evolved to meet the identified needs of the Latinx community A dedicated Spanish support line, answered by a bilingual social worker, connects callers to resources and supportive services within both the Gilda’s Club/Cancer Support Community network and the local community

Our bilingual social workers are able to offer our full complement of clinical offerings in Spanish, including individual, couples and family counseling and a well-attended weekly support group, Cafecito y Conexión, for our members who are living with cancer. Our Spanish-speaking members may also join an online support community called My Lifeline, offered through the Cancer Support Community, which offers online discussion boards and private websites in Spanish where cancer patients and caregivers can connect with their community and others like them to reduce stress, anxiety, and isolation As part of the larger Cancer Support Community network, we meet regularly with other CSC affiliates to share programming ideas and best practices to meet the needs of the Spanishspeaking communities we serve Notably, as a unique benefit of our affiliation with the Cancer Support Community, we are also able to share virtual Spanish programming from other CSC affiliate locations with the local Latinx community.

Hello, my name is Irma C and in 2016 I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and received radiation and chemotherapy I joined a Gilda's Club support group in Spanish at the Clubhouse, and it was a great help in those difficult moments.

OUR MEMBERS SAY IT BEST

It has been difficult losing a loved one during the pandemic. There have been overwhelming feelings of anxiety and loneliness, and the connections I have made at Gilda's have been a lifeline for me.

When I came to Gilda's, it helped mesomuch.Icould talk about my feelingsandwhenI saw other kids like me,IrealizedIwas notalone.

Gilda’s has programs for caregivers as well as those living with cancer that focus on self-care, and the group I was fortunate enough to join helped me to learn to spend some part of the day de-stressing and gave me a place to learn how to navigate the role of caregiver. It’s nice to listen to other women share their fears and worries which are often the same as mine It reminds me that I AM NOT ALONE

After being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Cancer, I was able to feel much less alone once I found the much-needed support and connection at Gilda's Club.

"I joined the Young Women with Breast Cancer group after my mastectomy It was comforting to see other members at different stages of their cancer diagnosis, going through chemo and hair loss They were able to show me the light at the end of the tunnel "

"Gilda's Club was there for my mom when she was undergoing treatment. They offered the help and resources that I couldn't and connected my mom to other people living with cancer to show her she was not alone."

Gilda’s Club Westchester is proud to be a member of a vibrant local community of institutions and organizations providing services and support to cancer patients and their families

Our valued partnerships with area hospitals and medical groups are key to our ability to reach and support cancer patients and their families throughout the area. In addition to maintaining strong patient referral relationships, we also collaborate with our clinical partners to deliver valuable community programming, featuring esteemed medical professionals, on the topics of cancer prevention, treatment, and the psychosocial impact of a cancer diagnosis through educational workshops, lectures, and panel discussions

Recent educational programs have included Advances in the Detection and Treatment of Blood Cancers, Managing Your Lung Health, Taking Charge of Your Life After Cancer, Living with Uncertainty, and Stretch, Strength & Nutrition for Cancer Survivors.

The Cancer Coalition of Westchester, of which Gilda's Club is a member, consists of a group of organizations that offer an array of services to support individuals living with cancer, their families and friends. Member organizations collaborate in an effort to raise awareness about the wide range of cancer-related resources available throughout Westchester County and host a variety of educational initiatives
