TABLE OF CONTENTS

IN 1958, SIX VILLAGES, THREE HAMLETS, AND ONE ISLAND IN RURAL ONTARIO WERE DELIBERATELY FLOODED TO MAKE WAY FOR INCREASED NAVAL TRAFFIC ON THE SAINT LAWRENCE SEAWAY IN THE NAME OF PROGRESS. 6,500 PEOPLE LIVING IN THE FLOODED LOCATIONS MOVED TO NEARBY TOWNS. IN THE MONTHS LEADING UP TO INUNDATION DAY, ONTARIO BOUGHT OUT HOMES AND BUILDINGS FROM THEIR OWNERS. 530 BUILDINGS WERE MOVED ON TRUCK BEDS TO THEIR NEW HOMES, A SPECTACULAR AND CUTTING EDGE EVENT THAT MANY PEOPLE STILL REMEMBER.

THE HISTORICAL BUILDINGS ARE RAISED ON A PODIUM FORMED OF THEIR AGGREGATED FOOTPRINTS. ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE COURTYARD, THE FOOTPRINT FACES OUTWARD TO INVITE THE VISITOR, AND ON THE EAST SIDE, THE CONDITION IS INVERTED TO CREATE INTIMATE GARDEN SPACES THAT MIRROR THE SMALL SCALE OF THE HISTORICAL BUILDINGS. BUILDING MOVEMENT IS MEMORIALIZED USING DIFFERENTIATED LANDSCAPING TEXTURE, CREATING PATHWAYS FOR THE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE TO ACCESS THEIR STUDIO SPACES. THE INITIAL POSITIONS OF THE HISTORICAL BUILDINGS ON THE SITE ARE MARKED BY SHALLOW POOLS, REMINDING THE VISITOR OF THE FLOODING THAT TOOK PLACE.

These fraternal twin retreat houses cut into the hillside, which iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve imagined is rocky and near the ocean in a hot climate. The houses overlook the ocean.

Their cavernous nature, low surface area-volume ratio, and their shared wall with the rock hillside protect them from the heat.

The outdoors is brought inside as a natural pool that transitions from an outdoor beach with dune grasses to a more typical pool indoors, and feeds a trickling waterfall in the courtyard between the houses. Windows like portals peek into and through the volumes.

‘Unbottle’ responds to an industrial site contaminated by metals and petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater.

The master plan, a team effort, introduces strategic tree plantings to stabilize the contaminants and create negative hydrostatic pressure to draw in groundwater contaminants.

Within the master plan, I designed a monitoring station on a budget for the 10m x 10m plot between five test plots of trees we planted on Earth Day 2018.

In keeping with the ecological spirit of remediation, I proposed using plants and all reclaimed materials. Tall grass walls wrap the plot and create interior corridors, with four distinct spaces: a work and storage building made of reclaimed pallets and recycled plastic bottles, an open ‘green’ room planted with red fescue grass, a more private green room, and a greenhouse nursery for pussy willows, constructed similarly to the first building. I used plastic bottles to draw attention to the amount of plastic waste we use and create daily, and to propose a use for ones already in circulation.

WE DIVIDED UP THE BROWNFIELD SITE AROUND NEWTOWN CREEK INTO 10,000M2 PARCELS. WE EACH DESIGNED A 200- UNIT MIXED HOUSING PROJECT TO REMEDIATE AN ASPECT OF THE POLLUTION. THE BIGGEST ISSUE ON THE SITE IS SEWAGE OVERFLOW DURING RAIN EVENTS. MY PROJECT USES REED FILTRATION TO CLEAN THE SEWAGE FROM THE BUILDING AFTER IT PASSES THROUGH PRIMARY TREATMENT. USING GRAVITY, THE WATER TRICKLES THROUGH THE PLATFORMS, FINALLY OUTFLOWING TO A RENATURALIZED WETLAND EDGE WITH PHYTOREMEDIATING SPECIES. THE SITE IS ON THE BORDER BETWEEN BROOKLYN AND QUEENS, AND GIVEN THE ECOLOGICAL INTENTIONS OF THE PROJECT AND THE NEIGHBOURHOOD, I’M IMAGINING RESOURCEFUL, CREATIVE, AND INDEPENDENT-MINDED FOLKS WILL GRAVITATE HERE. AS SUCH, I’VE PROPOSED SOME ALTERNATIVE LIVING SITUATIONS. I IMAGINED SIX OCCUPANTS’ DWELLINGS, WHICH COULD DEVELOP FURTHER IN THE FUTURE INTO THE CATALOGUE OF OPTIONS MENTIONED ABOVE.

THE KEYHOLE PAVILION EXPANDED FROM A FOLDING/CURVING EXERCISE AND RESPONDED TO A SITE WITH ROMAN RUINS IN PLOVDIV, BULGARIA. THE PAVILION CONTAINS GALLERY AND CAFE SPACES, MAKING A VISIBLE LANDMARK OUT OF THE RUINS TO DRAW VISITORS FROM A BUSY HIGHWAY, AND FACILITATES ACCESS TO THE ROMAN RUINS BELOW GRADE.
