New Medical Records Department Formed

Recognizing the increasingly important role medical records plays in our operations, we recently created a formal Medical Records Department. The change will streamline medical record reviews and administration and make the Quality Assurance process for organ and tissue charts more efficient. Here’s a look at what’s new:

New Call Schedule for Organ Recovery Department The Organ Recovery Department has instituted a new call schedule designed to address safety concerns and position us to better manage donor referrals. Starting in early March, Organ Recovery Coordinators will begin taking call on 12-hour rather than 24-hour shifts, a move that will allow us to more effectively use the skills of our highly trained ORC staff. Moreover, with organ donation cases growing in complexity and duration — often 30 hours or more — this new staffing model addresses the safety concerns that come with long hours in the field. And it allows us to take a more aggressive approach to managing referrals around the clock.

SafetySnippet Lifesaving AEDs Installed Cabinets for automated external defibrillators have been installed at two spots in the Itasca office — outside the copy room by the Administration area and in the Histocompatibility Laboratory break room. Studies have shown that using an AED in the first minutes after sudden cardiac arrest can boost the survival rates to as much as 90 percent. If there’s any medical or other reason you don’t want an AED used on you during cardiac arrest, notify Marianne Steimle, Director of Human Resources, immediately. A link to a training video on how to use the new AEDs was sent to staff on March 4. You can view the video here.
