The theme of this year’s Glasgow International is Attention, which amongst other things

invites us to think about how we pay attention to things and people around us, and the place of art in this. In light of world events and the decision to postpone the festival from its earlier slot in 2020, it may also be apt to think about ‘shifting attention’. The festival is a special moment, a crescendo in the creative rhythm of the city, and GI2021 seeks to step outside the everyday and open up a new space for looking, thinking and spending time with artists’ work, and to see afresh the intent behind it. Visitors may encounter exhibitions and artworks which explore attention in its many different meanings, but also as an approach taken both in making and looking at art. Artworks may show a deep and ongoing investment in a single concern or set of concerns, or a finely honed craft involved in its making. Some will involve a close examination of the self. Many will reflect on political or social inequalities, upheavals or injustices. Taken collectively after a year like no other, the exhibitions show how expression permeates and gives perception and intention to our lives.

Plan your Gi Glasgow International takes place every two years in traditional and alternative art venues across the city. Established in 2005, we both commission artists based in Scotland and internationally through the Commissioned Programme and select proposals from artists, curators and organisations in Glasgow through the Across the City programme. All exhibitions in the GI programme are free to attend. The majority of exhibitions are open from 11 to 27 June. Some events require advance booking, indicated by , but check online for the latest information. This year, alongside our in-person exhibitions spread across Glasgow, we present a Digital Programme. Digital Programme The Digital Programme features artists from Across the City and the Commissioned Programmes representing their in-person exhibitions online as well as work made for the easily accessible Digital Programme. Artists who have made work specifically for the Digital Programme include Catalina BarrosoLuque, Megan Lucille Boettcher, Christian Noelle Charles, Adam Christensen, Annie Crabtree, Liv Fontaine, Ilana Halperin, Mio Harada and Shoko Imai, Ashanti Harris, William Joys, Nile Koetting, Tomoko Konoike, Zephyr Liddell, SAGG Napoli, Patricia Panther, Mathew Wayne Parkin, Rosie’s Disobedient Press, Jessica Ramm, Leontios Toumpouris, Jeanne Tullen, Nora Turato, Hanna Tuulikki, Daniella Valz Gen, Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich, Wassili Widmer and Shizuka Yokomizo.

It also features a commissioned film from Anne-Marie Copestake in which artists from across the GI2021 programme converse, whether filmed in person around Glasgow or electronically over long distances, bringing together a prismed lens on the city’s visual art scene and its associated protagonists at a time like no other.

Covid Safe This year the festival is a little bit different. We are operating in a Covid safe way and have introduced free ticketing to some exhibitions to ensure there is plenty space for everyone and managing capacity in person at others. You can expect reduced numbers of visitors at any one time, signage to guide you safely, changes to how you access toilets, lifts and stairs to ensure social distancing, hand sanitiser at entrances, regular and thorough cleaning of handles, rails, toilets and other areas, and that staff and visitors are wearing face coverings while in public indoor spaces. We are taking part in the NHS Track and Trace programme so if you have not already secured an advance ticket you may be asked to scan in using a QR code or share the necessary information on arrival at a venue. By Bike Glasgow is an easy city to navigate on foot or bike. We encourage you to cycle around the festival. There are dedicated bike lanes on many of Glasgow’s roads. By Train Travelling by train is one of the quickest, easiest and most cost-effective ways to get around Glasgow, with many stations near to key festival venues. Stations are marked on this map to help you plan your journey. By Subway Many venues and projects are close to local network stations. The SPT ‘Roundabout’ ticket gives one-day unlimited travel by rail and subway to over 110 stations in the Greater Glasgow area. These tickets can be purchased through ScotRail or SPT Travel Centres. By Bus First Bus Glasgow operates over 100 routes across the city. Discounts for travel are available, with a number of tickets allowing hop on/hop off travel. For bus timetables and route information you can download the First Bus App for both Android/iPhone. You can also purchase tickets by contactless payment, or through the First Bus app.

The GI Events Programme How has attention shifted in the light of the global pandemic? What does it mean to be constantly connected digitally, but physically isolated? Who should we be listening to now? Newly conceived for Glasgow International 2021 is a programme of conversations and workshops, panel discussions, performances and a range of other online and offline events produced in collaboration with Art Fund. Titled Shifting Attention, the GI events programme builds upon the 2020 curatorial theme of Attention in order to open up dialogues and share ideas that might help to shape new forms of togetherness and connectivity.
