Passion makes history

BE AWARE OF YOUR SHIP POSITION: KNOW WHERE YOU ARE TO KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING.

Founded in 1973, in a country, Italy, that was still experiencing the tail end of the economic boom of the 1960s, a period that saw the construction of the first shopping mall, Gibam initially became involved in the food retail sector, and stars producing and selling scales and shelving. Those years marked the transition from small individual shops, to the consumer products sale inside more structured and modern spaces, the forerunners of today’s supermarkets. The 1980s were characterised by a wave of huge materialism and consumerism, an opportunity that the company seized by focusing on the development of modular furniture systems for the fashion and electronics sectors. During this period, Italy is very much involved with a well structured and capillary sales network. In the 90s, our attention turns towards international markets: the Middle East, Central and South America, and Eastern Europe were the areas in which, starting in 1994, the company concentrates its efforts, by specialising in the mass high street fashion sector. Around 2010, the opportunity to return to food retail : in the Middle East region, we start designing and building big, high-level hypermarkets and supermarket. We are still successfully involved in the last activity today. The end of the first decade of the 2000s sees the arising, in conjunction with a global economic crisis, of what has been called the ‘Retail Apocalypse’, i.e. the crisis of physical shops and the development of online sales. In 2015, my insight was therefore to turn my attention elsewhere, towards another sector, Hospitality, which, on the contrary, was profiting from this social transformation: consumers were preferring, to the purchase consumer goods from previous years, to invest in activities such as travelling, restaurants and social life to express their status. Hospitality was, at that time, a ‘train not to be missed’. A few years passed between the insight and the first results, years in which we designed and produced the first modular furniture lines for the hotellerie, until, in 2017, the first concrete opportunities opened up in a new geographic market: the United States. The acceleration of certain styles relating to the purchasing digitalisation habits, the spread of ecommerce, agile working and smart working, all trends already existing before the pandemic, led us, in 2017, to conceive and launch Gibam Composit program. A b2b online platform, connected by a project configurator, allows our sales manager and dealers network to design and buy our modular fittings systems while having the advantages of a precise online follow-up of the different stages from quotation to installation and assistance. One of the many projects on which we are keen to focus our energies in the very near future is the sales relaunch on the online platform with the introduction of furniture products also for the Hospitality and Food Retail sectors. The 2019 pandemic occurred by catching the company at a time of restructuring certain internal dynamics. This period was overcome, with the company’s efforts and willingness, in the only possible way: ”turn need into a virtue”. In fact, the pandemic has speeded up some processes: we have corrected and accelerated some internal restyling operations, better defined procedures and processes. On the other hand, that particular historical moment forced us to rationalize our strengths and deciding more clearly in which areas we wanted to invest or not. Decisions, at the moment, successfully confirmed by the results. Today, 50 years later, the company is experiencing a sort of ‘back to the roots’ and with regard to Retail identifies the food and pharmacy sectors, as the areas in which it plans to invest in terms of product

development and customisation, and the positioning of future commercial investments. On the other end, the Hospitality sector involves us not only strictly in hotel furnishings, but also in a range of areas that we could define as non-residential living (student residences, military, etc.).

During this period our belief which has always been with us, and will continue to be, is unchanged: the passion for what we do. This passion translates the four essential values that define the day-to-day life of this company: perseverance, as the internal attitude of our technical departments always looking for the best solution with the aim of blending quality and beauty; quality in what we design and produce, thinking about aesthetics, durability, functionality; the ongoing research into beauty, in the sense of the aesthetics of what we design or the ability to technically translate what has been designed by others; honesty in supporting the customer and thanks to which we try to find, together, the ideal solution that combines his functional and aesthetic requirements with the business investment he has planned. I think that the passion for what we do has been a burning flame over these fifty years and I am confident that this feeling has made, and is continuing to make, this ”film”, the history. This publication is intended to be aware of the position on what has happened until now and, above all, to share my vision on the future and the direction we would like to undertake, a sharing addressed to all stakeholders and those who work in this business on a daily basis. My thanks to all of them.

Two market sectors

RETAIL AND HOSPITALITY: A POSSIBLE RAIL?

Gibam today operates in two sectors: Retail, a market in which it has always been active and has developed a high technical know-how that has made it stand out today, and the Hospitality sector started operating in 2015, but developing very quickly expertise and competitiveness. Retail and Hospitality are now declining into a “constellation“ of different areas: stores and hotels are moving to far-away territories from their original ones, creating a new generation of distribution areas and a new phenomenon known as hybridisation. It is precisely these “micro-environments“ that see these two sectors, seemingly unconnected, converging in hybrid environments (originating fashion with restaurant, florists with cafeteria, beauty centres with bars, bakeries with cafeteria-restaurant, etc.). But there is more, because today, after almost 10 years of running on this rail (a rare case on the market a company dealing, at the same time, with these two sectors) we can state with certainty that other advantages have been reached. Hospitality furniture involves technical content, design and product manufacturing methods, which requires a streamlined and rationalised management process (the translation of each project element into “shop drawings“ it’s an example). Getting involved in this process we realised that we could also apply this to the Retail sector. Some internal technical/sales processes have been reviewed, finalised and made more efficient, with benefits not only for the company but also for the customer. On the other hand, the Hospitality sector has immediately profited from the wide know-how developed by the company in the management of sophisticated projects in the Retail sector, allowing us to make a difference today from our competitors, who are often artisan companies, due to our high skills in ruling and dealing with project “complexity”.

ROLES AND DEPARTMENTS WITHIN THE PROCESS.

The company corporate structure is the reflection of the process that begins with a business opportunity, corresponding to a project idea, to the development of a range of manufactured items, as well as the setting up of a designed space. Our company organisation finds the first phase of this process handled by the Technical/Sales Dept., divided into Retail and Hospitality: these two sectors manage first the commercial proposal, from the design (if it is required) to the technical drawings development that enable us to submit an offer. This division’s work is carried out with high technical skills and perfect knowledge of our production facilities, helping us to better focus on the aesthetic, functional and budget requirements.

The next step concerns the huge ‘container’ that we have called Operation: a combination of several departments, Technical/Engineering, Orders/BOM and Planning Production, which schedule, by implementing the working drawings and the semi-finished products supply, the following Production phase, advanced, in some cases, by the Prototyping and Mock-up development step.

This sector is joined by the food retail sector, for which the company has in the past few years developed furniture systems dedicated to the checkout market and specific sections (fruit and vegetables, wine and spirits, etc.), and the fittings for no-food sectors, such as fashion. Gibam India enjoys the benefits from the know-how acquired from the Gibam Italia technical experience and from the Italian identity that the brand represents as a distinguishing factor from its competitors. Today there is a growing cooperation between the two companies, both on the commercial side in co-supply operations in certain geographic areas located mainly in the GCC, and on the operating side about the work carried out by the two teams, the Italian and the Indian, in the technical and implementation phases.

FOCUS ON DIVISIONS

02

The Retail sector, today

THE STORE AS A PLACE OF EXPERIENCE AND RELATIONSHIP.

The Retail world is today experiencing a moment of evolution: the store, emptied of its original meaning as a physical place, is searching for new meanings and functionalities. The Pandemic has led to a radical change in personal and working life over the last three years and has drastically influenced the sociology of consumption, with corresponding effects on the marketing strategies of brands and retailers. In addition, the spread of online sales has brought, on one hand, a progressive reduction of shop dimensions and, on the other hand, raising aesthetic level, in terms of store design and layout, often conceived as mixed forms between offline and online status, and in any case increasingly integrated with digital. No more simple shopping locations, stores now become places of mutual relationship with customers, where services are being offered in addition to products. This concept involves a new approach to the customer experience, and our position as a products and services supplier for both the Retail and Hospitality sectors makes us a winner. The Retailer expects,

now more than ever, new projects working from a new sales/functional perspective (layout, flows, display mode), aesthetically attractive and in compliace with the investment budget. In these 50 years of activity in the Retail sector, we have earned a high level technical expertise, which has enabled our designers to employ their know-how in the search for that quality combining aesthetics, functionality and budget.

Our offer today consists of 18 modular furniture lines, to which we will include a wide range of additional products coming in the next period, and, at the same time, the possibility of developing custom-made projects. Our decision is to concentrate the new modular product line development on the pharmacy and food retail sectors. ”Olympia”, the first checkout counter signed Gibam and marketed by 2021, belongs exactly to the food world.

The Hospitality sector, today

HYBRIDISATION SPACES DEDICATED TO WELCOMING .

Hospitality is a word that does not only represent for us the concept of “hotellerie”, a sector in which we have been operating in the rooms and common areas furniture since 2015, but rather the wider concept of “non-civil residence”: a broad range of different microsectors in various geographical areas, in which we are engaged, with their own housing typologies and furnishing features (from short renting apartments in the United States, to residences in military camps in Kuwait, to student colleges in large European cities). Also the Hospitality sector, like the Retail, is today experiencing a period of transformation, which shows the ‘hybridisation’ of spaces

dedicated to welcoming (pubs that become hotels, bakeries that turn into residences, farms that become classrooms). Accommodation facilities are becoming increasingly chameleon-like, and here again, our position as a products and services supplier for both, Retail and Hospitality sectors, makes us a winner.

The company has decided to focus on the Hospitality sector in the coming future, with new investments in those countries with a promising business potential and an ambitious product development plan, which already finds us working on the design of modular furniture lines dedicated to this market segment.

Gibam Composit

NEW FUNCTIONS TO ENABLE YOU BEING ALWAYS PRODUCTIVE ANYTIME, ANYWHERE.

The Gibam Composit program was born in 2017 with the purpose of responding to the strong digitalisation wave that opened up at that historical moment and still ongoing today, accompanying other phenomena related to the online issue and to the workplace, such as the so-called “digital nomadism”.

Thanks to this customised b2b platform, which includes a project configurator, “Gibam Composit Configurator”, our professional customers (architects, store designers, contractors, store and hotel project manager, sales managers, agents etc.) can log in all our standard product ranges, set up a project, generate a quotation and, finally, if confirmed, convert this quotation into an order. Office area

The production process starts before the materials are processed by the machines: during the quotation phase, the Retail and Hospitality Technical/ Sales depts. design the elements with the aim of optimising the next production phase. In a second step, when the opportunity becomes a project, the area called “Operation”, including the Technical/Engineering, Order/BOM and Production Planning depts. manages, in detail, drawings and information for the production process.

Woodworking

PANEL SIZING AND EDGE-BANDING

The components production starts in our factories with the loading onto the machine, done by an operator or through robotic arms, of the “semifinished” panel. At first the panel is cut and shaped in the required sizes and shapes. It is then edge-banded (the edges see the application of a plastic or wooden edge strip) and then stored. The components are now ready, squared and shaped to the correctly finished dimensions, to move on to the next stage.

Woodworking

MACHINING CENTERS

In this phase, the components, previously processed by the sizing and edge-banding machine, are loaded and bored according to the final features of the component (holes for hinges, opening of grooves, etc.). The same machine can also, in this phase, make the edge-banding on curved and shaped edges.

Metalworking Manufacturing

The processing of metal components is carried out on a dedicated area of 9,000sqm. This phase involves the manufacturing of sheet metal elements, aluminium profiles and stainless steel, which, in a second step, are assembled with the wooden components previously processed in the joinery, and finally packaged and delivered.

Delivery

Through barcode readers, every single barcode printed on the labels placed on palllets, is read and dimensions and weight checked. The goods are then loaded on trucks and delivered. From now, the shpping iter from the company to ther final customer starts. Thanks to the work done previously, the goods are traceable. The client receives the goods and every pallet or single packaging unit is listed in an organised packing list.

06

Packaging

During this phase the items are organised by categories as size and kind of element, by using bar codes. Then are packed, labelled and placed on pallet or handled in crates, and brought to the to the right “loading bay” (where the items are loaded on trucks then forward to transport). The machinery that constitute the packaging line work with items whose maximum size is l110xd220xh45 cm, larger ones are handled manually.

05

Assembling

This phase is dedicated only to pieces that are shipped fully assembled. Assembly can be done in two ways: elements whose size and shape allow (i.e. kitchen main structure, cabinets) are assembled by using a machine called “electromechanical clamp”. All the elements that, unlike the previous ones, cannot be handled by machine because of their size and shape (i.e. a supermarket checkout, the mockup for a hotel), are manually assembled by four operators.

Woodworking - panel sizing and edge-banding

These views introduce us into the wood panel sizing and edge-banding plant, where the production process begins. It is an Edge-banding machine (ref.1) characterised by automatic feeding and does not require human intervention to turn the elements and change side. This machine applies the edge one side at a time through four steps and can hold up to 36 different edges at the same time of the same thickness. It is a

Woodworking - machining centers

These views introduce us into the second phase of the woodworking panel: in this phase the elements are loaded and bored according to the final features of the component (holes for hinges, opening of grooves, etc.). very performing machine, very used for flexyble lots. On the other side, the Double-side edge-banding machine (ref. 2) applies the edge on two opposite sides, then the human operator will turn and re-load the piece for the other two sides to be edged. machine, it’s a boring machine that open holes on items kept vertically, through automatic conveyors. High-productivity machine that can handle lots of different elements. Finally, Morbidelli FM 400 boring machine has a high productivity, which is approximately 250 pieces/hour. Used for large lots of same items.

Manual assembly and electromechanical clamp

The assembling phase is dedicated to those elements first assembled and delivered. The Electromechanical Clamp machine (ref. 1) used to assemble items that are sold already assembled and whose geometry and sizes (kitchen basic units, cabinets) allow an automatic assembly. In the first part, the various elements of a piece of furniture are placed in the machine with glue and joining parts. The clamps of the machine press the elements together and keep them for the desired time tightening and gripping them.

Packaging department

As the pictures show, the Packaging Department is constituted by a main “conveyor belt” (ref. 1), on which the items move towards a packaging robotic unit, and various “loading platforms”. Every loading platform is specific for item typology or for size (i.e. electric components are handled by one platform only). The human operator does a basic preparation of the items on tray, and applies a temporary barcode. The item is placed on the

When the item is ready, in the last phase is then completed with parts such as drawers, doors etc. After this the product is ready to be packed, labelled and prepared for delivery. All elements that, due to size or shape, cannot be assembled by a machine (the supermarket check-out counters, or the hotel mock-up room) are instead manuallyassembled by four operators (ref. 2).

conveyor and reaches the robotic packaging unit, where the barcode is read, the correct packaging is choosen and the item duly packaged and labelled with the final label, then moved automatically to the loading bay to which belongs in accordance to the order of which is part. All the elements that are part of the same order are unloaded in the same loading bay.

Sharing social proximity

OUR SUPPORT FOR PROJECTS “I BAMBINI DELLE FATE”.

Michele Silvestroni, responsible for the central Italy area for “IBambinidelle Fate”, visited us for the first time in 2017. The story of Franco and Andrea Antonello (authors of the bestseller “Se ti abbraccio non avere paura”), sometimes heard on TV or read on social media pages, became a reality through a passionate story that, since 2005, has been concretely ensuring economic support to social inclusion projects for children and families with autism and other disabilities.

We therefore decided to join the Fare Impresa nel Sociale® campaign, supporting the organisation with regular sponsorship. What excited us

was the possibility of supporting, through “I Bambini delle Fate”, the implementation of projects in our area, including, in this particular case, the activities of the Omphalos “autism & families” OdV Association. This organisation, founded in 2008 was based on the the idea of a group of parents of children and, at the Autism Centre for the Evolving Age of Fano took care of them. This centre is devoted to offering services, such as assistance in teaching and sporting activities, employment opportunities in both public and private companies, and much more, to children, young people and parents in the city of Fano and surrounding areas.

FRANCO E ANDREA ANTONELLO I BAMBINI DELLE FATE

«When serious disability hits a family, it is like an earthquake. But it’s an earthquake that lasts a lifetime. You don’t know what to do and nobody helps you», this is how dad Franco introduces the everyday life experienced with Andrea, an unexpected and challenging earthquake, but made of Love. When he became aware of the world of disability, of the lack of assistance that families have to deal with, he decided that he had to do something: to offer his experience as a businessman to the social community in a concrete and well-organised way......and something special he really did, he founded “I BAMBINI DELLE FATE”.

A social company that, since 2005, has been providing economic support to social inclusion projects and pathways run by associations and third sector area, addressing children and families with autism and other disabilities. For this purpose, we are exclusively involved in regular fundraising activities through the building up of supporters groups all across Italy. Through a widespread network of collaborators, we actively involve businessmen and citizens so that they “adopt in close proximity”and sustain an inclusion project over time.
