CIVIC RENEWAL JAA+A was commisioned to renew the existing civic grounds in front of San Francisco’s Municipal hall which is directly accesible from the national highway at Caraga. Currently, the site configuration is mostly taken up by vehicular parking slots with minimal vegetation and landscaping. The proposed layout takes inspiration from the region’s Mt. Magdiwata, seen by the locals as a pregnant woman lying down.

Central to the design are public seating spaces with organic curves in varying heights. This allows users to sit, stand, and play on varying heights using the new seating spaces.

To encourage interactivity with users and site, a fluid and organic approach was taken for the circulation. Local species of varied vegetative covers are used to provide natural shading and cooling.

MANOBO The local natives.

Design inspiration was taken from their basket weaving, the “Anahiwan”.

CONTEXT

Site with a continuously eroding cliff.

A creek is located 10 meters below.

The site is facing the community’s park reserve.

Cascading development to minimize environmental impact on site.

Setbacks observed for maximum building area.

Means of traversing through the staggered site.

Proposed scheme with a deck above the cliff to utilize the available lot space and site views. Cliff face is reinforced with gabions for support.

The challenge presented by the sloping site provided an opportunity to create a multilevel plan from which the hierarchy and organization of the spaces are attributed to. The family rooms are located at the top floor while all the public spaces - with a direct and open view to the reserve park in front of the site, are located at the lower levels.

CAMBOO FESTIVAL 2017 INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION PERSONAL ENTRY DEMOCRACY PARK, PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA

FESTIVE SEASON Building Trust International aims to host a yearly competition to celebrate and promote the use of bamboo in architecture as part of the local tradition; as such, 2017 marks the first year of the CAMBOO Festival competition at the Democracy Park in Phnom Pehn.

The design is influenced by the multi-layered, stacked roofing of the local traditional architecture such as the Chan Chhaya Pavilion. As part of the competition brief, the pavilion needs to be easily built with bamboo which also offers a degree of flexibility and portability so that it can be reused for a different purpose on a different site after the festival. The proposed scheme divides the structure into three parts to allow multiple configurations depending on the site it will be situated in.

MORPHOLOGY

Old and unoccupied low to midrise building chosen as context.

Existing skin is stripped.

Initial Tower Phase Closed modular pods are put into position by electromagnetic cranes and suspended mid-air by opposing magnetic forces.

An electromagnetic crane is put in place to convey parts on and off the structure. New facade system to be placed.

Intermediate Tower Phase Expansion of pods to create private and public spaces.

Photovoltaic balloons generate power for the pods.

An electromagnetic set of base and cap is installed on the roof deck. The lower half of the base houses the elevators.

Complete Tower Phase A stack of modular pods reach maximum height between the magnetic fields of the electromagnetic base and cap.

INTROSPECTION Ephemera is an examination of the concept of impermanence and its application to the design and assembly of a human habitat, particularly in the form of a skyscraper. It offers the idea of a temporal vertical settlement that exists and move along the shifting patterns of human migration, creating a community for global nomads while also preventing the building from crumbling away after being empty for various reasons.

COMMONS

International migration has intensified over the years as a result of globalization. The exodus of people from city to city has caused population shifts that wildly affects urban areas. Work and living spaces are either lacking in migrant hotspots or excessive in cities that that have experienced or are currently facing depopulation.

The latter is often evidenced by buildings that are in various stages of neglect and disrepair.

Subsequent decline for the need of skyscrapers cause them to become unnececesary in the aftermath.

SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE

01 ELECTROMAGNETS A set of electromagnetic coils are arranged between a number of concentric cylindrical insulators. The electromagnets are placed in strategic areas inside the pod, base and cap.

The electromagnets are designed to repel one another by emitting powerful magnetic forces of the same polarity as the adjacent member.

01 MODULAR POD

02 POLYMERIC FOAM The pod is supported by a polymeric foam structure that stiffens and hardens under electrostatic effect. The foam goes back to its original soft state once power supply is shut off during transport.

03 PHOTOCHROMIC MEMBRANE Exterior and interior partitions of the pod are made of photochromic membranes that change opaqueness when exposed to intense light, effectively and efficiently protecting the pod interiors from excessive heat and light coming from the sun.

04 CENTRAL CORE The core serves as the elevator shaft. The walls are fitted with a series of electromagnets of altering poles to drive the elevator car up and down the shaft - a mechanism derived from the MagLev track. Utility lines also run along the length of the core.

01 05 ELEVATOR PIT The elevator pit is installed with an electromagnetic spring to cushion the impact of the elevator car.
