Gems LivesExceptionalHere. Promoting Wellness and Education to the Communities We Serve COMMUNITY HEALTH AUGUST 2022

Poliovirus has been found in wastewater in Rockland and Orange counties. Due to the recent findings, the New York State Department of Health has issued guidance for the care of patients suspected of having polio:

• Ideally, only vaccinated staff should care for these patients.

• Use Standard and Contact Precautions while evaluating a patient.

QUALITY CORNER Culture of Safety: A Closer Look

• Identify strengths as well as areas for patient safety culture improvement

• Teamwork—a multidisciplinary approach to achieving patient care goals

• Patient-centered care, delivered with compassion, empathy and engagement of families We encourage everyone to take the survey so we can identify our strengths and build on them, and also learn about our opportunities to improve. Our goal is a culture in which people make safety their highest priority before any other consideration. Questions? Contact the Patient Safety Officer at mcrittenden@garnethealth.org

This fall, we will be administering the Culture of Safety Survey to all Garnet Health staff and providers. The Culture of Safety survey provides units and the organization with critical information about attitudes and perspectives on safety culture. The results can help teams understand ways to improve patient safety and processes locally and throughout the organization. The survey, developed by the Agency for Healthcare and Research Quality, is intended to:

• Organizational commitment of resources to address safety concerns

• A just culture and a blame-free environment of accountability for safe practice

• Diagnose and assess the status of our patient safety culture

Never access the record of a patient who is not in your care!

2

Masks and Protective Eyewear Are Mandatory Due to the uptick in COVID cases, New York State still requires masks to be worn in its healthcare facilities. Additionally, Garnet Health mandates eye protection in clinical areas within six feet of patients. Department and unit leadership will be monitoring and enforcing PPE compliance.

Polio Precautions

• Raise staff awareness about patient safety

• Evaluate the cultural impact of patient safety initiatives and interventions

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PRIVACY SECURITY OF OUR PATIENT INFORMATION!

HIPAA Privacy and HIPAA Security rules prohibit users from accessing any patient’s Protected Health Information (PHI) if it is not directly related to performing his or her job responsibilities. Staff should only access the minimum amount of information necessary to care for their patients. All user access is monitored and audited to protect our patients. Every action that a user takes within EPIC and other systems that maintain PHI is tracked and is discoverable.

• Evidence-based clinical care—delivering care based on current evidence and clinical expertise

What are the important features needed for a culture of safety?

HIPAA REMINDER:

• Collaboration across areas to seek solutions to patient safety issues

AND

Reminder:

• Examine trends in patient safety culture change over time

About the DAISY Foundation: The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and their families. Honorees receive a certificate of commemoration and a hand-carved sculpture known as A Healer’s Touch—plus Cinnabon ® cinnamon rolls, one of Patrick’s favorites.

Thank you for all you do for our patients!

• Thursday, September 15, between 11:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M.

• Surround your space (work and home) with items that make you laugh—funny jokes and funny quotes (that don’t violate work policy) that help make you and others laugh.

Let’s try our best to laugh through difficult times and not worry or speculate about the unknown. When you try to laugh or smile, you radiate positive energy—a beautiful gift to give to others. Anjana Poonthota, MD, MPH, FAAP, is Medical Director, Garnet Health Women’s and Children’s Services Program and Pediatrics, and Director of Wellness, Garnet Health. She is enthusiastic about sharing tips about our health and wellness.

• Plan to make funny videos or playlists with your children and loved ones.

Here are some tips:

• Visit a comedy club. Watch funny videos and movies during your free time.

hu·mor /ˈ(h)yo͞omər/ The quality of being amusing or comic, especially as expressed in literature or speech. A mood or state of mind. “There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”

• At work, try to converse with colleagues about funny topics, over lunch or coffee or during breaktime.

— Charles Dickens

Many of us are faced with more stress than ever before. Stress can negatively affect our mental, emotional and physical health. As healthcare providers, it is important for us to take care of ourselves so we can be the best for our family, patients and colleagues.

• Start your day by reading a funny quote or watching a funny video.

September: “HUMOR”

• As an adult, you still can enjoy funny animated movies, cartoons and funny books.

• Plan a social hour once a week with your friends who make you laugh and with whom you can laugh.

There are many ways to care for yourself. One way is to laugh. Laughter relieves stress, stimulates organs, boosts the immune system and improves mood. It is an excellent way to cope when you’re going through stressful times.

Wellness Word of the Month

• Listen to funny podcasts and TV shows.

• Appropriate humor is important. Avoid laughing at the expense of others. Use your judgment to distinguish a good joke from a bad joke.

• Plan your time off with activities that make you laugh.

MAN UP!

Did you know that prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the United States? One in every nine men will get prostate cancer during his lifetime. But, when detected and treated early, it is curable.

Tournament winners were Mark and David Bazcewski, Rolly Peacock, and Tom Fiumarello. Evelyn Gennodie, Garnet Health Manager of Healing Environment, won for highest-scoring woman.

Garnet Health Foundation held its first Sporting Clays Tournament on August 5 at Mid-Hudson Sporting Clays in New Paltz. What exactly is Sporting Clays? It is a shotgun activity where participants move from one post to another and are challenged by machines that launch clay disks at a variety of angles, distances and heights. Participants score points when they break the clay.
