Orange Regional Medical Center is the proud recipient of the Healthgrades 2017 Patient Safety Excellence Award™. This designation ranks Orange Regional among the top 10% in the nation for its excellent performance in protecting patients from serious complications during their hospital stays.

Healthgrades, an online resource for comprehensive physician and hospital information, evaluated approximately 4,600 hospitals nationwide. Orange Regional Medical Center was one of only eleven hospitals in New York State to receive this award.

Providing safe, high-quality care to our community is our highest priority. We applaud the efforts of our clinical and professional staff, which meet and exceed expectations each day in ensuring our patients are cared for in a safe, comfortable environment.

As we continue to improve safety for our patients, we are also doing much in the way of improving the health of our community, whether it is providing free healthy heart screenings, sponsoring walks and runs, leading wellness initiatives and/or participating in fitness challenges.

Amanda Langseder, Director of Community Health, has been out in the community building partnerships with local health entities and businesses. In conjunction with the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, Orange Regional has rolled out the Health Means Business Campaign. The Campaign allows business and community leaders to invest in workplace and community wellness while also promoting development of workplace wellness programs.

Orange Regional is committed to supporting the growth of a healthy, thriving workforce within our own organization.

We continue to offer our employees a Live Well, Be Well Program. Led by Orange Regional’s Wellness Coordinator, Rebecca Quicksell and in conjunction with our Employee Health team, we now offer Yoga and Reiki to our employees.

Additionally, an employee walking group has been established and meets on Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. at the first exercise station on our fitness trail. If you are curious about any of these initiatives, contact the employee health department.

Orange Regional Donates AEDs To The Town Of Wallkill Police

Orange Regional Medical Center donated two Physio-Control LIFEPAK 1000 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to the Town of Wallkill Police Department to help first responders potentially save heart attack victims while in the field. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can potentially stop an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest.

An IRONMAN Among Us

A new competition launched earlier this month that will award FREE lunch (pizza/salad) to the medical group care team who achieves the highest improvement in the number of patients who sign up and utilize MyChart! The Best Practice - MyChart Sign Up competition is open to all primary care and specialty locations within the GHVHS outpatient practice sites. (No applications are needed; data will be pulled out of Epic monthly by provider.) An award lunch will be granted to the entire care team who works with a winning provider in a particular location.

Dr. Eric Martin, Orthopedic Surgeon with Orange Regional Medical Group, set a great example for his patients by participating in his first IRONMAN triathlon in Lake Placid last month. The race took Dr. Martin slightly over 13 hours and included a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 marathon run. We are happy to say that he finished in the top 42%!

Welcome New Employees

Congratulations For the second year in a row, Orange Regional Medical Center has been named a Most Wired® Hospital by the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Health Forum. Orange Regional is among only 36 hospitals in New York State to have earned Most Wired® status.

According to results of the 19th Annual Health Care’s Most Wired® survey, released by the AHA Health Forum, new tools are helping patients become more actively involved in their care and maintaining their health.

“At Orange Regional, we are continually evolving our technologies to keep our clinical workflows optimized and maintain fast and secure access to patient information,” said Brian Tew, Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer for the Greater Hudson Valley Health System. “We keep our IT infrastructure on the leading edge so that our clinicians have the access they need to deliver the best possible patient care. Being named a Most Wired® hospital for the second year in a row lends credence to our efforts and establishes us as a leader in applying information technology to enhance the patient experience."

Most Wired® hospitals are transforming care delivery with knowledge gained from data and analytics. These hospitals are investing in analytics to support new delivery models and effective decision-making and training clinicians on how to use analytics to improve quality, provide access and control costs.

Dr. Jeffrey Stewart was recognized by New York State Senator John Bonacic for receiving Orange Regional’s Patient Choice Award.

Employee Of The Month

Our recent Employee of the Month and BEE Award Winner was Orange Regional Medical Group Physician Credentialing Specialist Emily Carwile.

Emily enjoyed a celebration with her peers and members of the management team, as well as a Bee themed cake, balloon, pin, certificate, parking spot of her choice during the month of September and an entry into the running of the Annual Bee of the Year Award.

Good Catches

Yesenia Fernandez, Patrick Callan, Melissa Hart and Brenda Duff of the Laboratory were recipients of the Good Catch Award for their attention to detail while reviewing patient information.

A Good Catch occurs when corrective action and/ or timely intervention prevents an incident or medical error from happening. Nominations are accepted throughout the year and are judged by the Patient Safety Subcommittee. Employee Health And Wellness As part of our Live Well, Be Well Employee Health Program, which includes Wellness Wednesdays and the Yoga and Reiki for Employee Wellness programs, all employees are encouraged to walk the fitness trail on Tuesdays. Meeting time is 4:30 p.m. at the first exercise station. The group explores the fitness trail and will teach others how to utilize the fitness stations. Come see how far it takes to walk one mile or just come out to meet new people and decompress with laugher and exercise. As always, if you are curious about any of these initiatives, contact the Employee Health Department.

Reiki Therapy

Delicious Summer Shish Kabobs

Your choice of • Marinades or seasonings • Meats like chicken and beef • Veggies like peppers, onions, mushrooms, zucchini, yellow squash, and grape or cherry tomatoes Instructions 1. Cut your meat and vegetables to uniform sizes and marinate ahead of time, if desired.

2. Clean your grill if needed. Oil the grates (preferably using a canola-soaked, wadded paper towel).

3. Preheat the grill on medium to medium-high.

4. Meanwhile, season meat and vegetables as desired and thread them onto skewers, making sure to leave a little room between each item and not crowd them too closely together. Remember to thread all the same type of ingredient onto each skewer, keeping ingredients separate so you can control their cooking.

5. Add kabobs to the grill and turn them or move them to cooler/hotter parts of the grill as needed until each item reaches the desired doneness. Remember that tomatoes need just a brief couple of minutes, so you'll want to reserve them until the end of cooking.

6. If any kabobs are done before others, keep them warm on a plate, covered with foil, until all skewers are done cooking.

7. To serve, take finished kabobs to the table and let everyone un-skewer the food they would like. Alternately, for a nice presentation, un-skewer all of the cooked items onto a large serving platter and present that at the table for guests to pass and serve themselves as desired.

The Big Latch On On August 4, Orange Regional participated in the Global Big Latch On event to kick off National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. The event was part of an international effort to raise awareness of the benefits of nursing a child. Thank you to all who participated.

Twice The View, Twice The Charm As a community healthcare provider, we have made it our obligation to create a healing environment, using the arts as inspiration. Over the last two decades, research on the ability of the arts to enhance health has increased. There are trends demonstrating that patients’ participation in the arts can reduce the use of pain medication, increase compliance with treatments and shorten the length of stay in hospitals.

The arts are also being used to create safer hospital environments, introduce nature into clinical settings, and enhance aesthetics. Data indicates that, as a result of this infusion of art, both patient and caregiver stress is measurably reduced, quality of care is increased and costs of treatment go down.

Our latest endeavor has been the reconstruction of our viewing garden, outside of the infusion center. The garden can be viewed from both inside and outside of the hospital. Its purpose is for patients, their families and visitors to experience the beauty of nature and its calming effects. Hand-picked grasses, plants and flowers will give patients something to focus on for the duration of their treatments. Family and visitors can breathe in a variety of scents throughout the garden, see butterflies or hear its water features.

Art Exhibit At Orange Regional Medical Center The latest art exhibition now on display at the gallery on the ground floor at Orange Regional showcases the work of two accomplished Hudson Valley artists, Sarah Fortner Pierson and Ellen Joyce Trayer.

Sarah Fortner Pierson grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and received a Bachelor’s degree in Art Practice from UC Berkeley. She moved to New York City in 2001 to join Hunter College’s Master of Fine Art program. She currently lives in Orange County, NY with her husband and son.

Encounter by Ellen Joyce Trayer

When describing the evolution of her Flower Series, Sarah said when she chooses a composition she tried to find the most unique and distinctive view of the flower.

“I love the drama of a huge canvas and how it fills my field of vision and I am submerged in the details of the forms.”

Ellen Joyce Trayer, jealous of her children’s artwork, tried her hand at painting in her mid-thirties and immediately fell in love with oils. Self-taught, she has received awards from The South Shore Art Association, The Winter Arts Festival and The East Islip Art Council.

Retiring to the Hudson Valley from Long Island, she pursued her art education with The Wallkill River School of Art. She has studied pastel with Dennis Fanton and oils with William Noonan and Susan Hope Fogel. Ellen’s new passion is Experimental Watercolors which she is studying with Susan Hope Fogel. Ellen finds her inspiration from the beautiful scenery of the Hudson Valley and from her many travels.
