Poison Ivy “Watch out”! Written by Kate Michalak, L.Ac., PA-C, What is Poison Ivy? Poison Ivy is a rash comes from urushiol, an oil present in certain plants. The rash is itchy and can spread. It tends to be a patchy or linear rash that is raised and fluid-filled, and very itchy.

Is it contagious? The rash is not contagious, however, if the oil is present on an object and that object then touches skin, a rash can break out. For example, if the oil gets on a pair of gardening gloves, any skin that those gloves touch may break out. How do I avoid getting it? The best way to avoid getting the rash is to know what the plant looks like, and remember the rhyme, “Leaves of three, let them be.” If you see these plants in your yard, garden, or play area, avoid them. If possible, cover all skin with clothing and gloves and remove the plants, then wash your clothes in hot water to dissolve the oils. If you think your skin came into contact with the plants or oils, shower in hot/warm water with soap, and wash all clothing hot water. There are also commercial cleansers that are available over the counter, such as Technu. Is it serious? The poison ivy rash is generally not serious, just uncomfortable. It typically lasts two to three weeks. It can be more serious if it is on the face, around the mouth and eyes. Some individuals who are highly allergic may experience swelling. In such cases, it is import to seek medical care immediately. It is also possible to develop an infection due to breaks in the skin. If you experience redness, pain, or warmth, seek medical attention. How is it treated? How the rash is treated is based on severity and location. Treatments range from topical steroid creams to oral antihistamines and steroids. The treatments don’t lessen the duration of the rash, but they do help to reduce itching and discomfort. If you are concerned, please contact your doctor or visit our Urgent Care Department.
