“Unity”: Annual Gym Show 2014 This year’s Gym Show took us on a tour of world culture, music and sport, celebrating the countries that have hosted the World Cup. Each breath-taking routine represented a different country and explored different cultural influences.

The audience were on the edge of their seats, gasping at the audacious tumbling and in admiration of the energy, vitality, grace, elegance and discipline of the performers. The routines varied from tumbling, trampolining and gymnastics to artistic dance and cheerleading, culminating in a highly creative performance of the highest quality.

The Gym Show is always one of the most enjoyable events on the school calendar and this year was no exception. Featuring nearly 100 pupils in total, it was great to see so many new faces of younger pupils, who will be the future of gymnastics at the school, and the audience showed great appreciation for Natalie Rumbelow, Demi Proud, Jaimie Morris and Danielle Swan, our Year 13 students, who have been involved in every single Gym Show since they joined the school seven years ago and for whom this will be the last.

Congratulations to every single performer for an excellent show and thank you to all the staff involved without whose dedication and hard work the Gym Show would not have been possible: front of house, backstage, technical support and teachers, within and outside the PE department. Particular thanks to Miss Greenidge and Mrs Lewis under whose direction Glenthorne gymnastics goes from strength to strength!

Glenthorne gets into the spirit of World Book Day! This year, Glenthorne High School celebrated World Book Day with an entire week of exciting activities. Pupils voted for their favourite books, participated in literary quizzes and defended their favourite book during an intense round of Book Speed Dating.

They also made their own World Book Day bookmarks, watched popular author Robert Muchamore conduct a live reading via a video stream and at 12:00 o’clock on the 6th of March, the entire school participated in “Drop Everything & Read.”

Of course, no World Book Day would be complete without students and staff dressing up as their favourite literary characters.

This year we saw numerous different costumes, including: Dr. Who, The Cat in the Hat, Captain Hook, The Queen of Hearts, Cruella Deville, Holmes & Watson and many others! It was surreal, bumping into the Mad Hatter in the corridor and having lunch sitting next to Harry Potter!

Pupils with the best costumes attended a judging ceremony in the Library during lunch time where they introduced themselves and explained to the group who they were, what book they were from and why they chose that particular character. Choosing a winner was very difficult.

1st Place went to Katie Jordan – 7L Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland who was awarded an Amazon Kindle in our whole school assembly on Monday. 2nd Place was Evie Tolley – 7R The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe (she managed to be all three!) and finally in 3rd Place, Hania Ahmed – 7S Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland.

Thank you to all the pupils, staff and parents who supported this event, making World Book Day 2014 such a huge success!

Food Technology Club On Friday 7th March, a variety of KS3 pupils attended the Food Technology Club hosted by Mr Harris and Mr Evans from the Technology Department. The pupils involved celebrated Shrove Tuesday by cooking a batch of pancakes and then serving the pancakes alongside different fruits and other sweet toppings.

Food Technology Club takes place every three weeks with Mr Harris and Mr Evans. If any pupils from KS3 would like to attend any future sessions then they need to collect a ticket from either of these Teachers. In the next cookery club the pupils will resume making ‘seasonal dishes’ and we will be making a Spanish Omelette!

France Battlefield Trip- 17th February 2014 The first Monday of half term brought an early start for eighteen Y11s and Y12s. After a 6.30am start at school, we boarded our coach, with our drivers Carl and Mark, and headed to Folkestone to catch the Eurotunnel over to Calais. The long journey to France was soon over and by 12 o’clock (French time) we were on our way to our first destination on the tour of French Battlefields and Memorials. Endless graveyards and memorials were spotted en route as we travelled through France, setting the tone for the rest of the day, which we knew would be full of poignant moments.

Our arrival at Vimy Ridge took us through forests that had been devastated by shells and bombs, the land was full of craters and there were signs dotted everywhere warning us of areas to keep out of as they know of unexploded bombs that still lie dormant in the ground. It was impossible to miss the Canadian memorial. The huge, white stone memorial stood at around 110 metres tall and was absolutely breath-taking. All around the statue are names of 60,000 Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of Vimy Ridge that took place all around the memorial. We then moved onto the Visitors’ Centre and took a walk through the trenches that remained preserved by the Canadian government.

The next stop on our journey was the Musée Somme 1916 - an underground museum that is in a tunnel that was used as protection during WW1 and WW2. It was there that we read translated letters from French citizens and soldiers of the town that were caught up in the Battle of Somme. These were incredibly moving as we realised people of the small town we were in had an incredibly tough time keeping safe.

Lochnager Crater was the next stop on the tour and the size of the mine crater is incomprehensible. Many men died across the fields that surrounded the crater and, as the sun was setting by now, it made the moment very moving. As we circled the crater we came across graves and countless numbers of poppies that made it dawn on us just how close war was.

The final destinations on our trip were in the form of Newfoundland’s Memorial, again for Canadian soldiers. It was here that we walked through endless trenches, which would have been very confusing to navigate through when it was crowed and dirty, until we reached a tiny cemetery full of never-ending pure white graves. At the next memorial, Thiepval, the sun had almost set and the sky was full of dark blues and oranges as we caught the last glimpse of the sun. It shone through the immense structure and illuminated another graveyard at the back of it - this time for French and British soldiers that had been “laid side by side […] in eternal comradeship”. This summed up the day nicely and left us in a reflective mood as we made our way home.

Science Week!! - 17th - 21st March 2014 Science week at Glenthorne went off with a bang – literally!

Miss Bains launched the week with an inspirational assembly, explaining that science is all around us and impacts on every one of us from the moment we are born. Miss Bains’ inspiration was Charles Darwin because he followed the evidence wherever it took him, even though his theory of natural selection made him very unpopular with his friends and family and especially with the church at the time.

Every lunchtime of Science Week was packed with activities! 

Monday’s ‘Hair Raising’ activities were electrifying as pupils got to grips with the Van der Graaf generator and also saw a vacuum-powered rocket.



“Making a mess” on Wednesday went from the freezing dry ice demonstrations to the explosive hydrogen balloons and icing sugar fireball. The ‘Screaming Jelly Baby’ was another highlight which delighted the KS3 audience!



On Thursday it was “Body Parts” and the 6th Form Biologists demonstrated a range of dissections, including eyeballs, brains, frogs and lungs which captivated many and made a few feel queasy.

The week finished with the Big Science Quiz where KS4 & KS5 pupils battled it out for the prizes. It was a great learning experience and great fun, of course!

DISTRICT LEAGUE WINNERS: The Y7 boys came together after a couple of trials and a pre-season tournament at Wilson’s school on a Saturday morning in early September. I have been incredibly impressed with the determination, team spirit and willingness to learn from all the squad members. Some highlights for me have been an excellent 5-4 win early on in the season with four quite brilliant goals from Jayden Morri-Obey against Wilsons, a tremendous team performance vs. Greenshaw with Alex Roach, Darius Navidi, Alfie Foster and again Jayden on the score sheet (Seamus Clifford with a heroic MOTM performance) and my favourite was our demolition of Wimbledon College 6-3 in the Surrey Cup with a fantastic hatrick from Darius, sterling work at the back from Jamie Todd, Daniel Laight and the MOTM and captain Bradley Williams with his great leadership so far this season.

2014 has brought two more league matches and two more wins and a narrow defeat on penalties to Richard Challoner in Round 3 of the Surrey Cup. Our league match on the 11th March was always going to be a challenging one with their reputation proceeding them. The game was very even with chances coming from both teams, but we opened the scoring with a brilliantly finished goal by our top scorer Jayden Morri-Obey.

They answered back with a well constructed team goal giving them the momentum for the rest of the half.

The boys fought valiantly and held the visitors to 1-1 at halftime. The boys came out of the blocks at the start of the second half and were eventual winners 4-1. After our 3-1 league win vs. Overton with new comers Evan Mathis and Harry Yellen on the score sheet. The season has come to a FANTASTIC conclusion with a 6-0 win vs. Stanley Park, securing first place in the league and yet more trophies in the Glenthorne cabinet.

Year 7 Floor, Vault and Tumble Gymnastics competition We had our first year 7 Floor, Vault and Tumble gymnastics competition at Glenthorne on Tuesday 18th March 2014. Glenthorne were against four other schools; Carshalton girls, Cheam, Blenheim and St. Philomena’s. Each team consisted of six competitors. Glenthorne competitors included Elisha Sewitt, who performed at the intermediate level, Naomi Katiyo, Ellie Fullalove, Evie Tooley, Savannah Quain and Ruby Martin, who all performed at the novice level.

All six girls worked really hard in preparation, made a real effort and performed brilliantly on the day. For the individual medals, in the novice competition, Ellie Fullalove came 3rd out of 21 competitors and at intermediate level Elisha Sewitt also took 3rd place out of 9 competitors. Overall, the team came 3rd out of the five schools. A fantastic result girls and well done to you all!

The next gymnastics competition will be for year 8 on Tuesday 22nd April 2014.

Sports News It has been a fantastic season this year; the boys have given many admirable performances with exceptional levels of quality and team work throughout. On Thursday 27th the year 8 team prepared themselves to play against Stanley Park in the District Cup Final held at Northey Avenue.

The game started at a high tempo with some good passing and possession play from Glenthorne, however Stanley Park were not without their chances and proved that size and strength in the middle of their park would be a real strength. After a number of chances coming from both teams, Scott Walker opened the account for Glenthorne scoring a majestic rightfooted shot into the top right corner beating a very talented Stanley Park keeper. Stanley Park increased the pressure and in reply scored with a driven shot into the bottom left-corner narrowly beating Charlie Summers. Ben Drake, Jordan Batt, Liam Harvey and Robert Lynch continued to absorb the pressure from the opposition and with some good link up play between Sid Dack and Nathan Ross. After beating a player with some clever footwork, Nathan delivered a timed ball down the line to Scott Walker who released an accurate pass into the box, allowing Josh Tully to score with a first time strike.

Glenthorne were 2 – 1 up and now had momentum, they continued to apply pressure with a series of fantastic Charlie Kift Set pieces, causing difficulties to the opposition’s defence. Kift delivered an in-swinging corner late in the first half that found the head of Robert Lynch who directed it skilfully into the roof of the net making the score 3 – 1 at half time.

A change at half time saw John Amuah enter the game on the right wing where he instantly impacted on the game in both supporting the defence and moving the ball into attacking areas. Glenthorne had a bright start to the second half with George Walker scoring the fourth goal with a well taken left-footed shot following a Scott Walker through-ball which was the beginning of the end for Stanley Park. Glenthorne continued to apply pressure to the opposition with some chances coming however, after a number of changes, fresh legs for Stanley Park led to a second goal, at 4 – 2 were they back in the cup tie? After soaking up some of the pressure, a goal kick from Charlie Summers found its way to Josh Tully who shrugged off the left back and unselfishly drew the keeper out and gave a pass across goal to Nathan who made no mistake finding the back of the net. At 5 – 2 Glenthorne continued to dominate possession with Kieran Wenman coming on in the midfield and Nathan Ross pushing higher up the pitch. The boys continued to pass the ball around and a tired Stanley Park could not cope with the continued pressure with a clumsy challenge on Scott leading to a Glenthorne penalty right before the final whistle. The boys decided that Charlie Summers was to take the penalty and he calmly side-footed the ball into the right hand corner and the game was won 6 – 2. A fantastic achievement, well done!

This season: Again the boys were keen and excited about the forthcoming season. The squad has grown with new recruits Ben Allen and Zac Aiken-Simon being integral part of the team. The team had a tough start to the season with a national cup loss vs. Oasis Academy, but positives were taken out of the game and shown in a fantastic 5-4 win vs. Matthew Arnold in the Surrey Cup. Billy Carney scored a tremendous hat-trick with Manni cashing in with a brace. At the beginning of November, the boys were involved in a thriller vs. Stanley Park which was a typical Sutton derby. As it was a double header, the boys drew 0-0, then had to go straight to penalties due to the light (literally the boys couldn’t see one another on the pitch). The result of the shoot-out was 3-1 and a place in the next round of the Surrey Cup! More league games followed with a couple of victories, a draw and a defeat, culminating in a DING-DONG battle vs. Overton, coming back from 3-0 down at half-time to secure a well fought draw at full time. A real squad performance shown here!

And most importantly the squad helping to find Mr Puddy’s mobile phone at the end of a match!!
