2017

ANNUAL REPORT

WELCOME LETTER Dearest Friends, Few places in the world have indescribable power and intrigue. Few give a greater sense of meaning and purpose to masters of their field. Few spaces are able to inspire profoundly. Few places leave all who visit with a sense of renewed serenity and connectedness to the greater spirit of the earth. This is Ghost Ranch. These impacts have left deep impressions on scores of people for generations. 2017 marked our first year, since 1955, as a non-profit organization. While still owned by the Presbyterian Church, (USA), daily operations are guided by the National Ghost Ranch Foundation. This allows for our diverse programs and educational opportunities to flourish in the Southwest tradition of our land which has been inhabited for more than 250,000,000 years. As we begin our new future as an independent organization, we are proud to build upon this strong and independent spirit. We are so grateful for your continued support, visits and flavor that you bring to Ghost Ranch. In gratitude,

Debra Hepler Executive Director

THANK YOU PRESBYTERY OF SANTA FE The past year has seen a large increase in interest and potential for group revenue and bookings. Stephen Picha, our Ghost Ranch Event Recruiter has been working harder than ever with each individual group to assure Ghost Ranch will meet their needs and to learn how we can best accomodate them. With the addition of Ben Ahern-Wild (Youth Service Corp Coordinator, 2016 & 2017) to handle the influx of interest, they have been extended an office and meeting space in Albuquerque where Stephen and Ben are based. We are grateful to the Presbytery of Santa Fe for this. To help facilitate strategies for event development a new sales tool was adopted in 2017. Digideck presentations are made to create custom web-based sales packets that allow the user to see the outline of lodging, facilities and meeting spaces as well as highlighting the amenities and the Ghost Ranch landscape.

Why We Give “We are passionate about the future of Ghost Ranch and thankful for the donors who share their time, talent, and resources for the viability of the Ranch.” ~ Tom Arenberg Diane Arenberg, a fine artist, mother of three daughters, and grandmother of two, is also a long term supporter, instructor and guest of Ghost Ranch. The story of how Ghost Ranch changed the trajectory of her family’s life is worth sharing. Her introduction to Ghost Ranch was subtle. In 1988, she served as a chaperone for the Presbyterian Youth Triennium. A Presbyterian minister told Diane about an incredible place of beauty in New Mexico: Ghost Ranch. “That’s all I’m going to tell you,” she said. “You’ll have to find out more on your own. You’d love it.” That fall, she took the bait and embarked on a painting trip to the Ranch with two artist friends. Diane will never forget the visceral reaction she had when she pulled into Ghost Ranch for the first time, greeted by a double rainbow over Kitchen Mesa. She claims she left her heart in Box Canyon that year and has to return to

painting companions. As each of her three daughters grew older, she began to bring the whole family along and spend two to three weeks at the Ranch each summer. Her husband, Tom, is an advocate of rest and relaxation and hikes at the Ranch. There is a prominent rock on the Box Canyon hike he and their youngest daughter Sally have named “Sally’s Rock.” The summer after their middle daughter lost her best friend to a car accident, the Ghost Ranch family was instrumental in her healing. Their oldest, Liz, tells people, “I grew up on Ghost Ranch.” She served on College Staff as the wrangler for two years and in 2011 married the love of her life at the Log Cabin in front of family, friends and Pedernal. Liz returns each summer to teach photography for Family Week and the Senior High Youth Initiative, fulfilling a lifelong dream to share her love for photography and Ghost Ranch with a new generation. By far her biggest joys have been bringing her son Dash and daughter Maisie to the Ranch for the first time.

classes. It’s a pleasure for us to give back and support the Ranch,”

Both Diane and Tom have served on the National Ghost Ranch Foundation board as members and board chairs. They ran the NGRF Auction for the first four years and currently serve on the newly-restructured NGRF board, which covers both operations and development. In addition to annual gifts, they celebrated Diane’s parents’ 60th wedding anniversary with the establishment of the Kramer Development Fund to help grow the Ghost Ranch donor base.

NOTES TO 2017 FINANCIALS Note 1 – Nature of the Organization Incorporated in 1972, the National Ghost Ranch Foundation, Inc. (NGRF) (a 501(c) 3 organization) is today “organized exclusively for the purpose of operating and providing financial aid and assistance to the religious and educational program known as, the Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center (Ghost Ranch) facilities in New Mexico. The Board of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), a New York non-profit corporation, and the Board of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation, which are constituent corporations of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Foundation (collectively referred to as “BCE”), are the legal owner of Ghost Ranch. As of January 1, 2017, NGRF is the operator of Ghost Ranch, meaning they are the sole employer of the staff of Ghost Ranch, and will engage volunteers to serve Ghost Ranch. Therefore, NGRF have responsibilities as operator and employer to manage and run the facilities at Ghost Ranch. (Notes continued on next page)

Note 1 – Nature of the Organization (continued) Prior to January 1, 2017, Ghost Ranch was operated by the Presbyterian Church (USA), A Corporation (PCUSA). Pursuant to an Operations Transfer Agreement between PCUSA and NGRF, effective at the close of business on December 31, 2016, the administrative and operational responsibilities of Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center (“Ghost Ranch”) were transferred from PCUSA to NGRF. In connection therewith, certain assets, liabilities and monies related to Ghost Ranch operations were transferred to the Presbyterian Foundation (USA) and then to NGRF, as summarized below. In addition, the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board of Directors approved two grants to NGRF/Ghost Ranch in the amounts of $125,000 and $150,000, which were paid in January and July 2017, respectively. In addition, NGRF entered into a lease agreement with BCE where BCE leases to NGRF Ghost Ranch, including the land, improvements and any operational items not otherwise transferred to NGRF. The term of the lease is from January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2019 (See Note 2). Without Donor Restrictions
