Our mission is to enrich lives. Our vision is that all might experience God through discovery and transformation.

WELCOME TO GHOST RANCH Warm days and summer rains bring the lush colors of high

desert flowers that flourish, then turn to autumn golds. As sum-

mer melds into fall in northern New Mexico, the Ghost Ranch landscape is warm and vibrant. Summer and fall are important times to slow down, connect with the power of nature and the rhythm of rest in your life. Immerse yourself in the community of vast, safe space where you can nourish your body, mind and soul. If it’s adventure you are craving, Ghost Ranch’s 21,000 acres lend themselves to hiking and horseback riding. If it’s renewal you’re in need of, we offer massage and meditation in the luminous air of this peaceful high desert retreat center, and many ways to learn and engage with life. Add an extra day to absorb the expansive energy of the Ranch.

Immerse yourself in the mysteries of Chaco Canyon, its ancient astronomical observatories, the Great Kivas of Aztec and Casa Rinconada, the Great Houses of Pueblo Bonito and Kin Kletso and much more. The schedule begins with a day of introductory lectures at Ghost Ranch and the opportunity to explore the Ranch in the afternoon. Then, two days on the road, one day to the ancient observatory of Chimney Rock and Aztec Great House and the next day to Chaco Canyon, with the final night at Ghost Ranch for discussion of the week and closure.

Pilgrimage of Life is for us “modern folks” to rediscover the incredible benefits found in the ancient art and practice of Christian pilgrimage. We will start our time together sharing tales of our storied journey of life. Following this will be an exploration of the characteristics of life as a pilgrimage, focusing on the importance of hospitality, character, the land, strangers, companionship, prayer and contemplation, music and art and the rituals of pilgrimage. A day trip to nearby Santuario de Chimayo is part of the retreat.

Carol Ingells G 16CDS55 1 All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,380 Shared Bath: $1,140 Single Occupancy Hermitage: $1,495

In today’s often troubling world, we can learn to live from a stance of gratitude that results in expanded sensitivity and awareness, more creative energy and heightened compassion. Spend a week in this peaceful space exploring grateful living. Share your story and hear others, celebrate in prayerful ritual and embrace both silence and community.

Educators give. They give of themselves intellectually and emotionally, from early morning to late evening, often with little time for professional reflection or personal rejuvenation. This retreat is an invitation to fill up the tank. Please join us for a vibrant, restorative gathering of educators with a focus on collective inquiry and reflection, individual rejuvenation and reconnection with the larger purposes of our work as educators. This retreat is open to all educators: pre-K through university level; in the classroom or administration; from public, charter or independent schools; working in traditional school settings or educational non-profits.

Group sessions and one-on-one time make this a fun and rich experience for all. All levels are welcome.

EARTH-HONORING FAITH Sunday, June 19-Saturday, June 25

CLIMATE JUSTICE

is NINTH in a

series of a ten-year commitment on the part of Ghost Ranch to Earth-Honoring Faith: A Song of Songs. The goal of the series is to construct justice-centered, Earth-Honoring Christianities that promote interfaith efforts on common earth issues.

Climate Justice G 16S631 All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,385 Shared Bath: $1,145 Communal Bath: $1,055 Camping: $665 (no meals)

The swelling of the human imprint renders planetary social justice more urgent than ever. Race, class, gender, culture and place are all profoundly affected, and those who suffer most from climate change are those who contribute least to it. At the same time, climate injustice reaches farther than most social justice traditions address. The whole community of life, the primal elements of earth, air, fire and water, future generations, even evolutionary paths, are all impacted. How, then, do we intensify social justice while transitioning to creation justice? What crucial roles do religious communities play?

Dr. Jennifer Harvey, Professor of Religion, Drake University, is the author, most recently, of Dear White Christians: For Those Still Longing for Racial Reconciliation (Eerdmans, 2014). Dr. Cynthia Moe-Lobeda, Professor of Christian Ethics at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, has lectured or consulted in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and many parts of North America in theology, ethics and matters of climate justice and environmental racism, public church and eco-feminism. Dr. Melanie L. Harris, Professor of Religion and Ethics, teaches Christian social ethics, womanist ethics, African-American religious and eco-spirituality at Texas Christian University. Dr. Jace Weaver is the Franklin Professor of Religion and Native American Studies and the Director of the Institute of Native American Studies at the University of Georgia. Ray MaKeever and Linda Breitag are songwriters and performers of peace, justice and creation songs. Includes an excursion on Friday, June 24 to Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo for its Feast Day celebration. Senior High Initiative Leaders Franciscan Sr. Joan Brown (Director of New Mexico Interfaith Power and Light) and Todd Wynward (wilderness educator and author of Rewilding the Way: Break Free to Follow an Untamed God) lead the youth experience.

Senior High Earth Initiative: Climate Justice G 16S632 All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Communal Bath: $395

JOHN PHILIP & ALI NEWELL Monday, July 4 - Sunday, July 10, 2016 Sunday, July 17 - Saturday, July 23, 2016 MONDAY–SUNDAY, JULY 4-10 I & Thou John Philip Newell, Nahum Ward-Lev G 16C DS7 1 1 All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,435 Shared Bath: $1,195 Camping: $715 (no meals)

One of the most important spiritual texts of the 20th century was I and Thou by the Austrian-born Israeli Jewish philosopher, Martin Buber (required reading). It distinguishes between the personal encounter with the Sacred at the heart of all life and the tendency to treat others as mere objects to be used for one’s own ends. Ask what this Jewish text has to offer today and consider how each spiritual tradition has a distinct offering for blessing in our lives and world. Days consist of prayer at sunrise, teaching and sharing in the intimacy of Casa del Sol in the mornings and evenings and afternoon rest and silence. Register early. Space is limited.

SUNDAY–SATURDAY, JULY 17-23 Celtic Treasures: Native Wisdom John Philip & Ali Newell, David & Winona Poole G1 6 S 7 3 1 All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,445 Shared Bath: $1,205 Communal Bath: $1,115 Camping: $725 (no meals)

One of the most cherished images in the early Celtic Christian world is the memory of John the Beloved leaning against Jesus at the last supper. It was said of him that he thus heard the heartbeat of God. He became a symbol of the practice of listening, listening for the beat of the Sacred deep within ourselves, within one another and within the body of the earth. This spiritual tradition has many resonances

with Native American spirituality and the wisdom of indigenous peoples throughout the world. In our signature week at Ghost Ranch, we will honor this wisdom and look to the treasure of Celtic spirituality as a rich resource for transformation in our lives and world today. Our days will consist of prayer at the rising of the sun in Ghost Ranch’s Agape Center courtyard, teaching and sharing in the mornings and evenings, and rest and silence in the afternoons. John Philip Newell (Author) and Ali Newell (University Chaplain) will lead this week along with David Poole (Musician) and Winona Poole (Teacher). They are all long-time friends of Ghost Ranch and have worked together creatively through word and song over many summers.

She is a sweetheart and she is very wise. I liked seeing her previous work. It was inspiring.” Retreat guest, 2014

WANDER OFF THE BEATEN PATH

“Belden’s course exceeded my expectations. I have loved his writing for years. Spending time with him was amazing.” Retreat guest, 2014

60

| GHOSTRANCH.ORG

In the summer of 1991, Presbyterian minister Belden Lane first visited Ghost Ranch. Like many who come and spend time in the sacred and mystical desert landscape, he had a profound, spiritual experience. This encounter left him awed, opened and changed. Belden would later write about this significant moment in his book, The Solace of Fierce Landscapes: Desert and Mountain Spirituality. Through the years, Belden has returned, finding respite and inspiration from the land, people and deep mystery of Ghost Ranch. In the late summer-early fall of 2016, Ghost Ranch is honored to have Belden (with his wife Patricia) as our Theologian-in-Residence. While doing some writing and adjusting to retirement from teaching at St. Louis University, Belden will share his wisdom and teachings in Backpacking with the Saints in August (see page 59) and The Desert Fathers, Men’s Spirituality & Shadow Work in September (see page 64). Patricia will also offer a course, Handwork as Prayer: Sewing & the Contemplative Tradition (see page 64).

Can You Say “Ekphrastic”? Writing Poems in Response to Art Jane Taylor G1 6 W1 0 1 1 B All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,360 Shared Bath: $1,120 Communal Bath: $1,030 Camping: $640 (no meals)

Just to say “ekphrastic” makes me feel I have traveled to Greece and joined an esoteric secret society. Indeed, the word ekphrasis is related to the notion of writing in a trance, but in today’s world it simply describes the art of writing creatively in response to a work of art. A poet connecting deeply with art often wants to write about the experience. But how? It must be composed in such a way as to invite the reader into that moment of awareness. It must become its own work of art. This class will look at modern and contemporary poet’s poems in dialog with art. Look at and engage with art. Talk to artists. Write all kinds of poems, ekphrastically, making a language bridge between poetry and another work of art.

When is a Story Not a Story? When it is a Poem? Anita Skeen G 16W 1011C All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,360 Shared Bath: $1,120 Communal Bath: $1,030 Camping: $640 (no meals)

All of us have stories to tell, probably a hundred every day. And what if we want to write those stories down? Do we think about whether we should write that story as autobiography, as fiction, as poetry, as a play? What determines the form in which we cast our stories? How do we make such choices? In this workshop we will look at the narrative poem and what choices we make when deciding upon what genre our writing will take. From Beowulf to the ballad, from the epic to Anne Carson, the narrative poem has been with us from the oral tradition through the contemporary poetry slam. We’ll look at some wonderful examples of narrative poems and consider them as models for the stories we would like to tell.

What is it that you really want and maybe even need to write about? Are you stuck in your comfortable style or is your writing voice beginning to stutter or sound boring, even to you? This class is a hodgepodge of kinds of writing: narrative; memoir; poetry; essay; fiction; nonfiction. Writing assignments encourage class members to explore new ways to say what they have always wanted to say, but didn’t know how, or maybe didn’t even know they wanted to say. Come. It’s a little bit lion taming, a little bit high wire work and some days we’ll unload the clown car. Road Stories: Driving the Story Highway Constance Squires G 16W10 1 1 E All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,360 Shared Bath: $1,120 Communal Bath: $1,030 Camping: $640 (no meals)

Describing the writing process, E. L. Doctorow once said, “It’s like driving on a highway at night. You can’t see any further than the end of your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.” From quiet country lanes to eight lane super highways, roads and the life that is lived on them are part of everyone’s experience. This class will read great examples of road stories from short story masters like Richard Ford, Flannery O’Connor and Richard Bausch and do daily writing exercises for practice with the tools and techniques of writing the story of a trip worth taking. Writing the Body Electric: A Class in Embodied Generative Writing Elizabeth Jacobson Catherine Bowman G1 6 W1 0 1 1 F All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,395 Shared Bath: $1,150 Communal Bath: $1,060 Camping: $670 (no meals)

How do we celebrate and sing ourselves through the body, mystery and nature in a way that turns the rawness of human trauma–personal trauma from our individual lives and the trauma we all feel collectively living on this

ecologically vulnerable planet, into love and healing? This is a class in embodied generative writing, open to all writers and forms of writing with daily writing exercises that will include writing strategies that push us past our censoring minds into the subconscious. Writing for Healing Laura Apol G 16W 1011G All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,360 Shared Bath: $1,120 Communal Bath: $1,030 Camping: $640 (no meals)

Writers often claim (and research supports) that writing can have healing properties as we seek to make sense of and give voice to experiences and events of our lives. Talk about how writing for healing works and what role it can play in our lives; we will work through exercises and prompts that allow writers to move more deeply into the writing-for-healing process. This workshop is intended for anyone who wishes to explore their own healing through writing, as well as those who wish to facilitate the process in others.

You are invited to come away to the high desert of Ghost Ranch at Casa del Sol to begin your Advent journey. Winter in the desert lends itself to living in sacred space as we explore the four themes of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love, which culminate in the Incarnation. Get ready for the birth of the Christ child by preparing our hearts and souls for his coming. We will sweep them clean as we read, discuss, journal and pray, making room for the Savior, born in Bethlehem.

Winter Solstice in the seasonal cycle is the time for the seeds to rest, when the shortest days pass into the longer, when thanks are given for the change of dark into light. It is a revered time for the Rio Grande pueblos. During this week, you will see the animal dances of the pueblos. Among the possibilities of dances are the Buffalo dance at Jemez Pueblo, the Deer dance at Taos Pueblo, Comanche dance at Tesuque or the Matachines on Christmas Eve at Ohkay-Owinge Pueblo.

NEW YEAR RETREATS In the silence of winter during the darkest days of the year, under a bowl of stars and a waning moon, we invite you to Ghost Ranch to recalibrate your personal compass point. Here is the perfect setting for your soul to be nourished. Here is where you honor the wisdom of dormancy and connect to the rhythm of your true nature. This is the intention of our New Year Retreats.

It is not just the values of each of these separate aspects of Ghost Ranch, but rather the synergy of its beauty, its scientific value, its cultural and historical traditions and its spirituality that make it like no other place in the world.
