HOMECOMING: A TIMELESS TRADITION OF UNITY AND PRAISE
By GHMBC Deacon James L. Sanders Chairman, Deacons Ministry
It is in the spirit of thanksgiving that we come together once again on this Grant Hill Missionary Baptist Church Annual Homecoming Service. Since our humble beginning in 1863 our church has served as a beacon of light for generations of our members and the surrounding community. We are grateful for the work God has done through our forefathers and now through us to carry out the mission of bringing others to Christ. And it is with that same spirit that Pastor Clifton N. Witherspoon and our congregation welcome each of you as we celebrate this, our 2024 Homecoming Service.
Homecoming is a time when we remember the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future. My early recollection of Homecoming was that of being filled with excitement and anticipation as plans were made for the grand celebration. A committee would lay out a program guide that meticulously outlined the service. Traditionally, a former member who was then pastoring would be invited as guest speaker and other churches and their choirs were invited to provide music.

Former members and the community were also encouraged to attend. As the major fund-raising event of the year, fund raising captains worked hard to raise the most money, thereby earning the distinction of being crowned as Homecoming Queen. And of course, it would not be a true Homecoming without a hefty serving of food which was served out of car trunks and tailgates. Each Homecoming event reignited and strengthened the spiritual bond that held us together. And it allowed us the opportunity to build upon the spiritual legacy of our forefathers.
As it is in a relay race, the baton has been passed to us and it is now up to us to maintain the enthusiastic sense of fellowship set by prior generations. We celebrate the present with unwavering faith and focus in supporting Grant Hill’s mission both in and outside the walls of our church. Homecoming therefore reminds us that it is up to us to be purposeful in our efforts to maintain the legacy that we now stand upon for the work that is before us.
As we continue to look to the future, we are reminded that it takes an ever-evolving body, a collection of souls, young and old, to carry out God’s plan of redemption. In this race we may not know exactly where or how God will position us. However He uses us, we must not give up or drop the baton. We may not be the fastest runners, but the race must go on.

The fact that Grant Hill is still here after 161 years is a testimony of the grace of God, the faith, love and dedication of our members past and present that has stood the test of time. We thank you and we celebrate you for your passion to help carry out this great work. With joy and excitement, we now continue to celebrate on the “back side of the mountain” our 2024 Homecoming Service Celebration here at Grant Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

If you have attended a worship service at Grant HIll, then you have undoubtedly heard the soul stirring music being played by the members of our GHMBC Music Ministry. Every Sunday, the sounds of their instruments fill the sanctuary with praise and songs.
Frankie Davis has been a member of the GHMBC Music Ministry for years, using his gift of playing the organ. His contagious smile and gifted performances are a trademark of his talent. But Frankie’s talent and gifts emerged long before his time at Grant Hill.
Psalms 33:3
Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
Frankie Davis, Sr. began playing the piano at his father’s church at the age of 6. Being a natural and gifted talent at such a tender age, he quickly blossomed and assumed the role as Minister of Music for The Greater Highway Churches of Christ. In his growing up and coming into his own, Frankie has had the distinct pleasure of sitting and learning under the tutelage of Mr. Steven Ford, the great organ player and producer.
Throughout his growing up, Frankie has kept church music in his heart and has continued to play in the church, being mindful to appreciate the gift of music and staying focused, remembering to guard the anointing as related to being a minstrel in the house of the Lord
Though Frankie has ventured in other areas such as being a talented hair stylist and a doting father to his two sons, he has always kept his focus on his love for music. He has taken on the philosophy to take the role that he has played in many churches as Minister of Music as a growing apparatus and a stepping stone to build a solid musical foundation and to make all experiences as one of growth and development.
Frankie has been blessed and favored to work with various artists such as Hezekiah Walker, The Williams Sisters, The Canton Spirituals, Donnie McClurkin, Shirley Caesar and many other wonderful artists. He has also traveled playing at festivals and weddings.
As he makes his way to leaving his mark, he looks forward to walking in the destiny that is awaiting him, and he is living every day and moment to walk in the blessing of God that maketh rich and addeth no sorrow.

“I had to go into a major back surgery which I thought...would stop my whole dancing career, but God pushed me through, and I’m back up dancing again - that is my testimony.”
~Kalia Jackson
We became interested in praise dancing when Kalia was around 4 years old. She saw the other girls in Grant Hill worshipping through dance and she was ready to dance. I inquired about it and I was encouraged to bring her to practice. At first it was a little scary but after that, she took off Kalia loves to be able to express herself through dance. Kalia listens and studies songs. She relates them to certain situations and ministers through music. The Lord uses Kalia in many different ways through dance.
My experience with her journey has been nothing short of amazing. She has traveled and danced in many competitions
For a year, she was a part of a traveling praise dance group out of Augusta, GA. Every weekend we would be traveling. At times, I did get tired but I knew this was her heart and passion, so I kept on until I couldn't.
An obstacle that she overcame was her back surgery We found out in July 2023 that she had scoliosis and she had to have back surgery in order to fix the curve. That was the scariest thing ever. Thinking about my 11-year old having full back surgery did not sit right with us. She had to stop dancing for 3 months, she missed school. Thank GOD He kept her
When asked how she feels about praise dancing, Kalia replied, ”How I feel when I praise dance is happy, excited and energized. When I dance, I want to feel the spirit interacting in the room with everyone and not just me. While ministering through dance I feel peace, love, comfort.”

was motivated at an incredibly early age t come a teacher from having many caring teachers that I had in Elementary and High School. I have always admired the way my teachers would present lessons to us, and how much they enjoyed seeing the sparkles in our eyes when we learned the skills I dreamed that one day I would become a teacher, but I did not know how I was going to make it happen. As I think about all the trials of my growing up years, God had a plan for me. I embraced all the opportunities with a
positive attitude and listened to My grandma when she told me, “You are going to make something out of your life.” I am an only child who dreamed a lot about all kinds of things. It was during these seasons that I would study more. I wrote a lot of made-up stories while my cousins were outside playing As I grew older, things did not come easy for me or any of us doing my growing years. We lived on a farm, picked cotton and other chores that are so different now, but my mom kept me in school with a lot of encouragement.
FIVE DECADES OF DEDICATION
HOW I BEGAN IN EDUCATION
After graduating high school, the late Pastor Williams asked me what my college plans were and encourage me to apply at Morris College. I told him that I did not have the funds to go to college, but I applied and was accepted. I was on work study programs and got student loans along with my mother’s support. I studied hard and majored in Elementary Education. This is my 53rd-year teaching. I am presently at Manchester Elementary School in Pinewood, SC working with Special Education students. I have taught in Lee County, Columbia Richland one, and Sumter County schools. I have had the honor of representing Oakland Elementary as Teacher of the Year in 1995-96 school year. I have taught at numerous schools in Sumter County, Lee County and Columbia Richland one. I have a master’s Degree + 30 hours above in Elementary and Special Education. I am an achievement-oriented person, and I like to see projects begin and completed and I often have more than one going at the same time. I enjoy moving forward.
THE CHANGES IN EDUCATION
I have seen so many changes in our schools of today. The most significant changes in education that I have seen during my teaching career are… students using more technology in education and relying on modern technology to get their assignments completed.
We are having more school funding concerns, getting students to class, learning losses in our students, and teacher shortage. Some of our students are showing less interest in getting themselves prepared for their future. Our students are showing differences in their learning styles, which is a good thing because all of us have different learning styles from the ways we process information, their approaches, and attitudes toward learning.
THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION
To recruit more teachers in the field of education, I think some of the biggest issues in education are teacher’s salary, and more support within the classroom setting from parents. The areas of teaching that keep me coming back into the classroom every year are my passion for teaching, making a difference in a child’s life, and making a positive impact on every life I touch. I believe that the wisdom one shares is priceless. Teachers are a guiding light in a child’s life We help to nurture their curiosity and ambitions. I have had many trials along the way, but I see all of them as learning experiences that I had to go through to get where I am today. I thank our Heavenly Father for helping me to endure the journey I have traveled. He has never left me or forsake me. He let me know that He was always by my side. I give God all the glory and praise.
Success Through Active Faith
TAKING A DEEPER LOOK AT HOW THE BIBLE OUTLINES PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESS
BY GHMBC MEMBER ANTONI JENKINS
Since 2O2O I have been fascinated with the subject of personal development. PersonaI Development or Self Development consists of activities that develop a person's capability and potential, by means of building human capital, facilitating employability, enhancing the quality of life, and facilitating the realization of dreams and aspirations. When I was introduced to the 17 Principles of Success of The Napoleon Hill Foundation by one of my mentors, Lefford Fate, l was excited and curious about the new voyage towards learning, understanding, and applying these principles of success. Napoleon Hill was an American self-help author. He is known for his book, "Think and Grow Rich," which is among the best-selling self-help books of all time.
One of my favorite self-help books happens to be the Holy Bible, which I have been a student of since the age of twelve when I received Jesus Christ as my Savior. ln studying Napoleon Hill's best-seller, "Think and Grow Rich," I quickly realized that the 17 Principles of Success were uniquely like the instructions, stories, and principles l had learned in my earlier exposure to the Holy Bible.
Mr. Hill's work dug deep into how and why these principles are indispensable and accurate, just like the teaching and principles of the Bible I have been inspired by a fellow Napoleon Hill

Faith-Inspired Decorating Ideas to Elevate Your Outdoor Space
By GHMBC Trustee Dorothy B. Nixon
In warmer months, a well decorated outdoor space can open up your home and extend the square footage, giving you more living and entertaining space. Read on for more tips on elevating your outdoor spaces.
When decorating a porch or deck, think of style and comfort. Focus on inviting front porch seating, and decorate the steps of the porch with beautiful plants with blooms. Red is a very catching color. Think style and comfort with seat covers for your porchchairs.
Be sure to consider space while decorating youroutdoorlivingareas.Whenitcomesto porches and decks, space may be limited, so think about how you want the space to function You may not have enough space for a dining and conversation area, so select a space large enough for furniture andaccessories.
It’s best to select compatible, easy to maintain furniture. Choose furniture for your porch or deck that is made from weather resistant materials, like wood, metal or wicker. Trending decks are decks with privacy walls and deck railing.
The material that most people are choosing now is composite decking, which is a manufactured product that
combines plastic and wood fibers. By keeping these tips in mind, you will be on your way to elevating your outdoor spaces.
A scripture that I love to read from the Bible is Proverbs 14:1: The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands, the foolish one tears it down. Proverbs 14:1 tells us wise women build their homes with care. They use wisdom from God to fill their homes with love, peace and happiness. It’s not just about the physical house. Smart choices and living a good life are the keys. Take care, and God Bless!
