Via an EU Regional Development Fund project, “Investing in our shared future”, Provice (Danish process consultants) analysed GH Form’s products.
“In our analysis, we compared GH Form products and products from a European competitor to quantify the impact of using 100 % recycled iron produced at the Ferrofoss foundry (owned by GH Form). We conclude that using 100 % reclaimed iron is indeed significant to the foundry’s total environmental impact. The production of one GH Form linear drainage grate emits 3.58 kg CO2, whereas the carbon footprint of a comparable product produced by a European competitor is 14.59 kg CO2” A comparable European competitor uses 35 % reclaimed iron and 65 % iron ore and has also higher transport costs. The calculations were made in the SimaPro LCA calculation tool.
Our carbon footprint is calculated in a cradle-to- grave perspective. It is based on one GH Form Aquaform® linear drainage grate weighing 5.5 kg compared to a corresponding European competitor product.

GH Form and the UN Global Environment Goals We strive to comply with the UN Global Environment Goals. We focus on certain goals: 7, 8, 11 and 12:
No. 7 Affordable and Clean Energy
No. 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth
The most sustainable energy is energy that we don’t use. We strive consistently to minimise our energy consumption by investing in energy-efficient technology and optimising the amount of energy we use for heating and melting iron.
We are proud to say that we are a great place to work. We respect our employees and believe it is important to meet their needs. We create economic growth via good design and sustainable production.
No. 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities
No. 12 Responsible Consumption and Production
Via sustainable production processes, we make a positive contribution to tomorrow’s urban spaces. Good design is only sustainable if it is appreciated. By diverting rainwater into stylish and attractive linear drainage grates, Aquaform® helps making society sustainable.
Aquaform® maintains an especially sustainable consumption of materials. We use only recycled materials from other production sites on Zealand (a Danish island). We deploy the most eco-friendly method of melting steel when we make cast iron in electric ovens.
Linear drainage with concealed frames
About Aquaform®
Linear drainage All standard Aquaform® grates were originally developed to order for projects and designed in collaboration with Danish and Swedish architects for:
Købmagergade, Copenhagen Kalvebod Brygge, Copenhagen Sluseholmen, Copenhagen Vadstena, Sweden Frederiksberg town centre Aarhus harbour and river Pedestrian street, Aarhus Mora, Sweden Pedestrian street, Hørsholm Pedestrian street, Horsens Pedestrian street, Sønderborg Skovbakken residential housing, Frederiksværk Valby Have residential and commercial district Täby Torv urban space, Sweden Aquaform® linear drainage systems are high quality drainage products. The underlying channel and frame are always concealed. The frame is therefore adequately protected from knocks and damage. Only the grate, encased in surfacing on both sides, is visible in the urban space.
Aquaform® produces attractive linear drainage grates encased in surfacing on both sides — with no concealed frames

The combination of the sturdy dimensions of the grate with the optimised, profiled design of the channel makes the system a very useful and well-thought-out product. The channel can be seated without a moulded concrete encasement and still withstand 90 tons pressure from all sides. Danish Technical Institute has tested this product in accordance with DS/EN 1433:2002, clause 7.15. Special projects Designs to order We can design a linear drainage system to order. You may require a design for use in a unique environment, e.g. specially designed to reflect the topography or animal life in or history of the site, or to make a creative design expression. The linear drainage grate must be 500 mm long and may be 140, 190 or 240 mm wide. Examples of customised designs and features: Tile with cast bird motif — patinated for Fuglsangsø (lake) in Herning, Denmark
· Radius · Pattern · Fountain · Water mist · Lighting Radius GH Form can produce a linear drainage system radius to order. The design ensures that the grates flush lengthways along a curved linear drainage band. Pattern GH Form can produce a grate with a customised pattern. We can also produce cast iron paving slabs or tiles with the same pattern and formats as grates.
Tile with cast bird motif for Fuglsangsø (lake) in Herning, Denmark. Designed by landscape architect Birte Østerbye
Fountain and water mist GH Form can supply grates with nozzles for a fountain and/or water mist system. We can produce a linear drainage system where the fountain gradually increases in response e.g. to the sound of a passing bus, to shift focus away from the noisy bus and enhance the energising sound of the water in the fountain. Lighting GH Form can also fit light sources to grates so that they function as path lighting at night. At best, illuminated grates add visual impact to streets, avenues and squares. GH Form develops customised grates, paving slabs and tiles in collaboration with Aquaform®. The latter is responsible for labelling the grate/ paving element(s) to coordinate with the channel.

Polymer concrete water channels Straight channels Aquaform® provides polymer concrete water channels in the following widths: 140, 190, 240, 400 and 500 mm. The channels are seated 30-35 mm from the top of the top course (measured from the profile). The precise measurement depends on the choice of grate. The channel is then seated 4 mm under the level of the top course. When using stainless steel profiles in connection with laying asphalt, the channel must be seated 2 mm below the level of the top course.

Sealed joints If sealed joints are required, e.g. in decks between floors or special environments, use the sealing grooves at channel element ends. Sealing is simple: Use a sealant gun and seal the elements as you work. NB: Use a suitable adhesive or sealant product. When this work is complete, the sealant is concealed and protected from mechanical overload.

The steel frame is suitable for use with asphalt. It is made of stainless steel and has an additional flange that extends up around the grate, so asphalt can be laid right up to the frame edge. The grate is therefore loose and can be removed without damaging the asphalt. See fig. 02. It is possible to fit a plastic frame to one side of the channel and a steel frame to the other, if asphalt will be laid only on one side of the grate. A cast iron frame can be used if there is a need for additional reinforcement at the top of the channel. The frame has transverse supports — across the channel — for especially robust reinforcement. The cast iron frame can also be used with asphalt top course. Available in widths 140 mm and 240 mm.

Aquaform®
Laying instructions How to lay polymer concrete channels and grates Aquaform® recommends that the finished channel with grate lies 3-4 mm under the level of the adjoining surface to ensure that surface water flows freely into the grate. Seat the channel elements a further 6 mm under the level of the adjoining surface to compensate for the lock-down mechanism on the grate.
Aquaform® channel elements are designed to transfer traffic forces to the concrete encasement. See fig. 06.
Seat the top edge of the drainage channel 30 mm lower than the adjoining surface. See fig. 04.
fig. 06
30
Seat 30 mm under adjoining surface
When laying tiles and paving stones right up to the channel, it is important that there is no sand against the channel. This is firstly because sand does not transfer traffic load forces applied to the channel walls and secondly because vertical forces on paving laid in sand discharge horizontal forces on the channel wall that can cause overload. See fig. 07.
fig. 04
GH Form drain channels are cast in concrete to meet load class (fig. 03). See overview in section. How to determine load class Seat and adjust the elements on a concrete bed. Always begin at the outlet. Slide each element vertically into the groove in the previous element. Before laying, saw off any superfluous grooves on the two elements using an angle grinder. When the channels are laid and adjusted, encase on both sides. Ensure that the grates or planks are in place (22 x 128 mm, fig. 05) during moulding and laying. General recommendation: Always use planks – especially when laying tiles and rubber surfaces. During levelling, planks protect the grate profiles from horizontal forces that can cause grates to jam. Planks also save you much subsequent cleaning of grates and channels. NB: Seat the top edge of the drainage channel 30 mm lower than the adjoining surface. For long-lasting, professional results, use suitable materials, optimal drain design and, last but not least, lay carefully.

Practical advice NB: Always lay the channel and then mould an encasement around it in accordance with load class before laying the adjoining surface. If you lay paving stones right up to the channel, always set one row of stones against the channel in the concrete encasement. Never lay more than 30 mm asphalt right up against the channel. Lay sufficient asphalt to compensate for levelling and subsequent rutting (due to heavy traffic). When laying a large area of concrete, configure expansion joints: parallel with and 1.5–2.0 metres from the channel, and at right angles to the channel opposite a channel joint (maximum 8 meters between expansion joints).
